Christopher Denise spent much of his childhood in Shannon, Ireland, exploring castles and dreaming of great adventures. He is the illustrator of many critically acclaimed books for young readers, including Anika Denise’s Bunny in the Middle, Alison McGhee’s Firefly Hollow, and Rosemary Wells’s Following Grandfather, as well as several in Brian Jacques’s award-winning Redwall series. His books have appeared on the Indie Next List and the New York Times bestseller list. Knight Owl (march 2022) marks his author-illustrator debut. Christopher’s current adventures include exploring coastal Rhode Island, where he lives with his family.
This book is a follow-up to the successful Knight Owl, by the same author. Like the first book, it is about relationships and the discovery of worth. Illustrated by the author, the book is a jewel to behold and will be loved by children and adults alike. It will be donated to St. Joseph’s School, in Chehalis, WA.
I loved the first one and I loved this one. Just delightful. And the art is beautiful. This is an all ages book. He could write 15 books in this series and I’d read every single one. Do I have kids? Nope. There just is something so wholesome and comforting in kids’ books and middle grade . Adults can have a sort of sense of peace for a while. If I’m going through a stressful time, sometimes letting my inner child picking what to read is exactly what’s needed. I think a lot more people would be a lot more happy if they remembered that feeling - before bills and work and all the other adulting - it was you and your imagination. There’s a purity in that. An excellent palate cleanser before your next Brandon Sanderson tome or hard-hitting literary fiction. Just a book about a little bird who wants to be a knight.
The eager new recruit for the Knight Night Watch is a little bird that talks too much and prefers to be awake during the day. Early Bird is annoying and creates a dangerous situation for Owl, but still manages to become something tolerable by the end.
It's not as cute as the first book, but a fine follow-up all the same.
The reoccurring themes in the Knight Owl series thus far have mostly to do with appreciation of differences between people (such as they are), friendship, and compromise, all of which are valuable to teach to children.
As with the first book, the artwork is gorgeous and inspiring. I found myself pausing to examine cute background details several times. The use of differing font sizes also helped characterize Early Bird, who is adorable and likable despite how she annoys Knight Owl initially.
My only note might be that poor wolves have once again gotten a bit of a bad rep in fairy tales. Here's hoping there's a chance to make friends with them in the threequel.
An oh-so-adorable follow-up to Knight Owl, this one follows our owl friend as he meets a new bird, Early Bird! Early Bird wants to be a knight too. She thinks if she asks enough questions, Knight Owl will teach her to be a knight. But, at the end of the night, Knight Owl just wants to sleep. Will Early Bird get to learn how to be a proper knight? Will she learn how to be a good friend to Knight Owl? And will Knight Owl learn the patience that a friendship with Early Bird will take? Find out!
