I was in the mood for light-hearted escapism, after some heavy reads, and this fit the bill! It's a witchy rom-com with sweet, likeable characters, like Erin Sterling's the Ex-Hex 🧙

Unfortunately it didn't work for me as I was expecting.

I liked the premise and the story got better as it progressed, but I didn't like Kay that much. She was quite immature, sometimes. As for Harry, well... I didn't hate him. But I'm not a fan of miscommunication and thought that there was a great deal of that from his side.

Then there was the beginning which was kind of slow and didn't help as well.

It's a shame I didn't enjoyed these latest witchy rom-coms that much.

*opens book*

🎵 I put a spell on you
And now you’re mine… 🎶

*slaps book shut*

What the…?

*shakes head and re-opens book*

🎶 You can’t stop the things I do… 🎵

*slaps book shut (again!)*

*closes eyes* It’s just your imagination; Winnie Sanderson is not singing every time you open the booOok! *snorts*

This romantasy romcom is packed full of all your favourite romance tropes; older brother’s best friend, once-friends-to-almost-childhood-sweethearts-now-enemies-to-lovers-ish, second chance romance, forced proximity, misbehaving magic, and the pièce de résistance *cue drum 🥁 roll*… only one bed (hallelujah! 🙌🏻).

I was belly laughing thanks to Kay and her misbehaving magic. Pesky emotions have a lot to answer for, eh?! Rather than embracing her gift she views it as a curse, which is a tad understandable given her history.

I think a lot of us can identify with Kay’s inner struggles. We all need to learn to love ourselves for who we are… magic gifts and all *snorts*. I was rooting for Kay to love herself in all her witchy awesomeness and open her heart to all the possibilities including her own HEA thanks to a well-aimed lop-sided grin as Harry had her spellbound years ago.

*whispers* Can I tell you a secret? Harry had me swooning and sighing all over the place. *sighs* See?! *palms face* He is your quintessential golden retriever hero who wears his heart on his sleeve and makes no apologies for it… oh, he’ll apologise when he needs to, but not when it comes to feelings.

He left me breathless during a certain seggsy scene thanks to his gift *winks*. I messaged a friend and said it was one of the hottest scenes I’ve ever read… *stares into space muttering* that tongue! *sighs longingly*

Peeps! I hexing loved everything about Kay and Harry’s story, and I’m witching for more stories about the Biddicote Boo Crew (and beyond!).

Witches, road trips and romance.
What a fun mix to create a fantastic read!
Kay is a witch, born to a witching family from the heart of an established witching town.
However, she isn't feeling the witchiness. Unable to control her magic, she takes the opportunity to visit a specialist in these magic malfunctions in Prague while on a work trip there.
She didn't expect to be held up there in a huge storm threatening all of Europe while trying to get back to England ASAP to attend her brother's wedding.
Oh, and then there's the matter of her unexpected companion for the journey back, an old friend and childhood crush, Harry, a fellow witch.
The story is set over a couple of days, as they battle all manner of obstacles to reach the wedding.
What can I say? I truly loved this whole story. I bet we all wish for a little magic in our lives. Oh, to cast a little spell to make the weather more favourable, get certain chores done, or even get that person to like you... But reading about Kay and Harry's difficulties, despite having these powers, made me think that nothing is ever that simple.
Their momentous journey back to the UK is evidence that no amount of magic can solve every problem!
The evolving relationship of Kay and Harry that is set over a couple of days actually spans years, dating back to their youth, when Kay had a bit of an unrequited crush on her brother's mate... and certain situations left her feeling rather raw, and a bit of a failure. This unexpected meeting brings all manner of feelings back to the surface, spiced with faulty magic!
And that's only from Kay's side! Who knows if Harry is even interested?
A thoroughly enjoyable witchy read!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Orion Publishing for an ARC.

What a beautiful story! Funny, witty & creative. Loved Kay, wish we had a dual POV from Harry’s perspective but it worked out well just from Kay’s.

I adored both of their magical gifts. I had a lump in my throat when Kay discovered she was not fooled by Harry’s influence magic and she has seen him for exactly who he is all along 🥺 made my heart happy. Just a lovely, wholesome & comforting read 🫶🏻

Utter drivel. I really wanted to read something light and easy to warm up for the spooky season but bloody hell this was painful to read. I DNF at 60% but I’m counting this as read because I went through that much suffering.

Romantasy is a newish genre in general and fairly new to me, and I know this is Emma’s first foray into it so we are all coming at this story fresh. But what better time to read a book about sexual tension between witches than in the run up to Halloween?

This book is entertaining, clever, sexy and full of fun and imagination. I think it always comes through in a novel when an author is excited by what they are writing and this really comes through in this book. You can feel the joy and creativity flowing from every page of this novel. The pure pleasure Emma had creating this book buzzes through the storyline like her own magical gift (you’ll have to read the book if you want to understand the reference) and that thrill translates easily to the reader and fairly whips you through the story like a surfer on a wave of pure reading pleasure.

The two main characters here are attractive, complex and thoroughly charming, all you need to fully invest in their complicated relationship. Kay is a woman at odds with herself, a situation many of us will recognise, but to add to the normal angst of individual uncertainty is the effect this is having on her ability to control her magic. And you thought you had problems! Add to this the reappearance of her childhood crush who broke her heart, make him the last person she wants to see and the one person whose help she needs and you have the recipe for the perfect romance with a spicy, magical twist. I fell completely in love with Harry over the course of this book, probably more than Kay ever did!

This book is a dose of pure escapist pleasure that makes for perfect seasonal reading. There was not a missed step or a dull moment throughout the whole story, it flows wonderfully and delivers conflict, romance, sexiness and real emotion all the way through. I had a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat by the end (although I am in a highly emotional state at the moment,) it was everything I could possibly be looking for in a book in this genre and I absolutely loved it. Add it to your TBR immediately.

This was cute. Maybe more like 2.5 stars. So close to a three. I had a hard time getting through it and having it keep my attention. I’m not sure why exactly so I’m chalking this up to a me problem.

I enjoyed the emotion of the story and the family dynamics. I thought their magical gifts were unique.

I think I wish they would have just had more open conversations but who’s kidding who….we all do that for a great number of reasons. Also I thought it was really strange that the man she's had a crush on for basically her whole life had a three year relationship with a man. I mean there's no mention of him being bi-sexual before that and when she learns this she's just more stunned he was in a serious relationship. I am not intending to be judgemental, but seems like that would be pretty shocking and warrant some more inner dialogue and questioning? Or maybe I'm just a fuddy duddy and it's just common place now-a-days for people to engage in relationships with both sexes.

I really thought the beginning and ending were engaging. I would recommend if you like sweet, light witchy reads. I’m not sure I’d read it again but maybe.

I love a book that has magic sprinkled throughout it so this charming book was a lovely read for me.
A few of my favourite romance tropes are covered in here, including forced contact, second chance of love and friends to lovers so I was very entertained throughout this riveting story.
Kay was an interesting character and I was intrigued to see if she would overcome her magical issues and become happy with her gifts.
Harry was super sweet and I loved his caring nature and the support he gives Kay.
A delightfully fun and quirky story that was adorable to read and had a few magical steamy moments too!
A perfect pre Halloween read and I loved the use of magical words/festivals when they were surprised or thankful! A nice (magical) touch!

3.5*

This was very cute!

A lot of cliches within the romance genre, but I liked it nonetheless. Loved the way even though magic was a big part of the book, most of it served more as a metaphor for life itself, mostly because in this story magic is very tied to emotions and individual personalities. The main romantic relationship was portrayed in a lovely way and was very complexed! Would like to have seen even more depth within the family dynamics.

The only ick was the exaggerated use of the same expressions each time the couple looked at each other or touched or something. It’s always the stomach rising to the heart or something similar! Change it up girl 🤣

This was a different one for me. Combining romance, fantasy and a little bit of magic. The witch elements made the story it made the story come alive. So did Kay and Harry childhood friends and want to be lovers. Harry broke Kay's heart and in end the end it came down to needing to know why. Kay discovers in time she may have done the same to him. I love their relationship and how it grows when they are adults. Thanks to being stuck in Prague and many other locations. Interesting read 4.5 stars

A really lovely and sweet book. I couldn’t put it down.

This was so boring. Kay was soooooo annoying and so unlikeable. I had to slog through this book. I wish more of the story was about the end plot because the first 90% of the book was so slow and was just Kay being immature and her teenage crush. Also their whole relationship was pure miscommunication and it sucked that towards the end they didn’t even really spend time together. The whole road trip kind of seemed pointless and just a lame plot device to keep them together and isolated. ALSO WHY THE FUCK IS HER NAME KAYLA BUT SHE ONLY GOES BY KAY. That genuinely was the most shocking thing of the book. I hated that her name was Kay. I wish it was only used as a nickname or if the author wanted her to only go by a nickname pick something cuter.

I’m not convinced they had any chemistry. And things would’ve gone so much quicker if he just explained what happened. Then there wouldn’t have been as much stewing in the misinterpretation by Kay. Also I’m a little confused as how she never knew that her brother and Harry were still friends. I get that her mother told him to never speak of the Ashworths but I don’t really get it. Also I was fully convinced that her brother, out of spite, also influenced her when he gave her that napkin note from Harry when they were younger. I swear the author was implying that her brother was also part of her teenage heartbreak. I wish that there was more relationship between the siblings because we’re only ever told about how they eventually made up but never shown it.

So technically this book is a standalone and is marketed as a standalone, but it seems stupid to not make it obviously part of a series if you’re gonna introduce a whole new and bigger plot line at the end of the book??? As a standalone book, it feels soooo unfinished because all this lore about the Ashworth family is not explored in any capacity. Also the cave??? I really thought something magical was gonna happen in the cave but then it wouldn’t have been the last scene. But still!! However, seeing as there is a sequel that focuses on this new plot line it makes sense but then I feel like Harry was a bit misused as he will be the new patriarch of the family eventually and so shouldn’t he be more important and have a larger role in this unfolding plot? It just makes me feel like Harry and Kay were lowly NPCs and this was simply a prequel to the real mystery.

I think also it would’ve been nice to be more involved in the witchy world because it seemed really interesting and the world building was sort of there but no time is really spent in it so you’re left kinda bored. But I get it because the book was about Kay and from her point of view, where she basically lives outside of the witchy world and is struggling with her magic. So it makes sense that we’re not involved. Anyway I will be reading the sequel that I just saw has come out and see if it improves on this book.

The other thing I will say is that the cover is so cute and uses the cartoon cover trend well.

Characters: Charming enough, if a bit overly explained. Quite a bit of telling rather than showing with Kay. That said, this is how you write a bi MC in a straight romance. There's history, there's backstory, there's an actual ex who's still on friendly terms, no faffing about with oh maybe they're bi or maybe they could be or even yes they are but there's no evidence at all to demonstrate that fact. Just casually integrated Harry's ex-boyfriend into the plot and moved on. Extra points just for that. 3/5

Plot: Kinda torn, tbh. On the one hand, I'm glad this isn't another book where someone interfered to ruin the FMC's life and then got handwave forgiven at the end. On the other, it does feel like there's a fair amount of dismissing Kay's mum in a way that veers awfully close to an allegory for mental illness and/or people who've been in abusive relationships. Kay's 'revelations' as the story progresses for the most part aren't really backed up by the narrative in the way they need to be for this type of story. 2/5

Setting: Loved this magic system. It's a great combination of intriguing enough to catch attention without being so technical that it detracts from what's otherwise a contemporary romance. Could have done without the 'holy grimoire' silliness when it came to exclamatory phrases. Always reads a bit too much like Harry Potter fanfic. 3/5

Writing: Hard to tell given the terrible editing. There were several points at which I couldn't be sure whether or not something was intentional because it certainly looked like something that slipped through multiple rounds of editing. For a published book, that's not acceptable. 2/5

Overall: A bit more complex than the usual fluffy, witchy romance read, but still fun. Just a bit lacking in the qualities needed to move it from 'fine enough' to 'oh I quite enjoyed that'.

Kay's magic is acting all funky and she's worried that she'll wreck her brothers wedding. She decides to mix magic and business and visit a magical "fixer" which in Prague for work. She doesn't exactly get the answer she was looking for but she does bump into Harry. The same Harry who broke her teenage heart.

Harry's magic is influencing through imagery but his secondary talent is being a "magical compass". He doesn't always know why he has to be in certain places but he goes where his magic tells him to. Bumping into Kay in Prague seems to be fate's way of getting him to apologise for the way he treated her. However, they both have to get home in time for her brothers wedding. Pity the weather seems to be as wonky as Kay's magic!

I love a good road trip book! These two have to traverse Europe on their way home to Surrey. I think they use just about every mode of transport to get home except helicopter and hovercraft! The weather is certainly giving them enough time to hash out all their problems and a freak accident with the fold out bed from he{{ puts them in some close proximity.

This relationship has been evolving for years, even when Kay and Harry weren't in contact, so the quicker route to a HEA is to be expected. Magical intervention is also putting them on fast forward! I loved the way that there was no big splash or shock over Harry's past and sexual orientation. It's just his past, we all have them. Thoroughly enjoyable witchy, spooky season romantic read!

What an interesting world that was build here - complete with witches, magic, mayhem, and mystery!

Kay has been struggling with her magic lately. She took an alternative route in life, not choosing to lean into her magical abilities and instead went into IT. There are oodles of regrets and drama in her hometown that she’d like to avoid, but on a work trip out of the country, she somehow ends up running right into her childhood crush. Said crush ended up stomping on her heart pretty badly, so she doesn’t open right up to him about her own magical troubles. Instead they end up reluctant travel companions, both racing against cancelled flights and huge storms.

At first, I admit, I was anti-Harry (the childhood crush). We slowly peel back the layers that led to their terrible heart-stomping encounter, but with enough time, magic, and good vibes, we eek our way to a HEA. There’s even a big mystery to solve, and a wedding to manage, all rolled into this seemingly “normal” romance (with witches, though). I really enjoyed the introduction to this world and hope we swing back to visit again.

Anyone who knows my reading habits of late knows that I’m drawn to witchy books and so I was thrilled to hear Emma Jackson, author of gorgeous, bright rom coms, had branched into witchy books.

The beginning of the book had me intrigued- a skip back to the mc’s childhood where we learned of her being from a witchy family, and her interactions with a more powerful family. I loved the ya feel to it and it transported me back to my younger reading years, when I was absolutely mesmerised by new worlds. The book then jumps to a more contemporary feel, and I almost clapped my hands together at Kay’s issues with her magic!

We find Kay and Harry forced together as they try to get to the Uk for Kay’s brother’s wedding but are hampered by a storm. Forced is of course the operative word as there may be feelings…

The settings were brilliant, as were the characters, who were at times surprising. I’ll be honest, I wanted even more magic, because it was exquisitely and perfectly done and yet where needed had comic value too!!

This was a fab book with fantastic romance and chemistry that just had you absolutely absorbed. So recommended!

This is such a sweet, fun, magic-inflected rom-com! It has the feeling of British chicklit (in a very good way!) but with loads of magic that's not only fun to read about but also works so well on various metaphorical levels - and the second-chance romance feels really, really swoony by the end.

I spent the first third of the novel feeling a little frustrated with the heroine's rigidity and refusal to examine long-held assumptions, but I had plenty of fun during that part anyway, as she and the hero raced around vivid and lovingly-depicted European cities in their quest to get home in time for a wedding - and the emotional growth she undergoes across the novel is SO good, so convincing and so very satisfying, it was well worth that early frustration. By the end, I also completely understood why she'd been so rigid in the beginning and didn't blame her for it anymore.

I loved the ending, and I can't wait for Book 2 in the series of standalone-but-connected rom-coms. Because I'm very lucky, I already have an e-ARC (the reason I was prompted to read this first book, in preparation!), so I'm going to dive into that IMMEDIATELY. This was so much fun!

Witch You Weren't Here by Emma Jackson - 4.5/5 ⭐

What a beautiful written romance with a hint of magic! I absolutely adored this story, it's well worth the read and completely worth the 4.5 ⭐ if you enjoy a well thought out plot with a hint of witchy magic, then it's definitely for you.

Kay and Harry are the best characters! The description of both of them set them amazingly in my mind and they were so easy to visualise. Jackson done a phenomenal job in their descriptions and with the whole demeanor. I absolutely adored both of their characters and the development was spot on.

As for the plot - it's such a typical romance story line but better! The romance mixed in with magic made the story pop. It was usual but not boring by any means. I actually couldn't put it down until I finished it. I found myself smiling like a Cheshire cat on various occasions. It was so refreshing!

Thank you to NetGalley and Orion Publishing Group for allowing me to read this ARC - this is an HONEST review from my own personal opinion.

If you’ve been loving the current trend of modernised witchy romances like I have, you’ll definitely enjoy this. Witch You Weren’t Here is a textbook romantasy — it’s sweet, a little sexy and a bit silly. It takes your favourite tropes (enemies to lovers, hot ex-boyfriend, stranded together) and gives them a playful, magical twist that made something so fun to read.

The romance was so exciting, with a darcy-esque brooding love interest and a simmering tension that was palpable and would’ve definitely made you uncomfortable if you were in the room with them. Kay and Harry were both great leading characters, bringing some great comedic wit and humour but also some real tender and heartfelt moments of emotion and growth which were just heartwarming.

A light, fun and cosy story perfect for the autumn months coming up.

Kay is having problems with her magic and travels to mainland Europe to see someone to help. While there, she runs into Harry who did her family wrong while she was in high school. Kay needs to hurry home for her brother's wedding but the weather has different plans. Harry suggests they team up to make it back to England. Somewhere along the way, Kay realizes that what she thought was true may not be.
Opinion
I'm a sucker for supernatural books and witch books top my list of "need to read." This book was a fun time reading about the problems between Kay and Harry and the situations they ended up in. I read it during a particularly stressful time in my life and it certainly made me relax and laugh.
Many thanks to Net Galley and to Orion Publishing Group for providing me with an ARC of this book.

I had the pleasure of meeting Emma and her co-pod-host Jess at MeetCute festival this summer where I picked up a copy of this book. After chatting about our favourite tropes I naturally gravitated towards this story as it ticked my favourite boxes. Witches? Legacy? There was only 1 bed? Sign me up! Delighted now i've finally gotten to read that the story lives up to everything on the cover. The burdens of travel fails, a personal block infusing magic, and a past rife with miscommunication that Kay and Harry undergo was utterly charming. The tidbits of family trauma seeping in as guideposts were well done and did not overtake the light-hearted message of the book overall. Ready to take my husband on a European tour of discovery after falling into the spell of this story. You won't regret reading this one and I can't wait for the next one!

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an e-ARC in exchange for my honest review

3.5 rounded up to 4

This was a fun and easy witchy romance read, which I finished pretty quickly. It felt familiar to a lot of the witchy romcom books that have come out in recent years, so if you loved books like Not The Witch You Wed, The Ex Hex and A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating a Demon then this should be right up your street.

It fell short just a little for me as I think I'm burned out by all these witchy romcoms which end up blending into each other at times, and the writing didn't wow me. That being said, it was a fun and enjoyable read, easy to digest with likeable characters and a cute romance.

This witchy romance was a delight to read.
In its universe, every witch has, in addition to the general magic all of them can learn to use, a special ability that can be a gift or a curse depending on your luck... or just the way you look at it. I enjoyed finding out what every witch in the story could do, as well as following Kay and Harry on an eventful journey from Prague to the English village they grew up in when dreadful weather conditions threatened to stop them from attending Kay's brother's wedding. I also particularly liked the arguments about the use of influencial magic, and seeing both the good and bad sides of some gifts.
But I think the best part is... the news that there's more to come. Can't wait to read about the witches of Biddicote again!

My second Romantasy of the season and once again, it did not disappoint! Witches, Road Trips and Romance. What more could you need? It’s a book full of beautiful magical moments, frustrations and the odd steamy chapter or two.

Underneath all of the magical realism are underlying messages that can apply to just about anyone. Struggling to fit in? Trapped on a road trip from hell with your first crush? Wondering what on earth life has in store for you next?

The tension in this book was beautifully written, Emma Jackson had it spot on. Pages of pure, uncomplicated, escapist pleasure reading. A gentle romance and a gently storyline, delivered with emotion, humour and a good dose of complex family dynamics!

Loved this story of 2 witches, Harry [yes a man can be a witch] and Kay, through their tempestuous childhood, then an absence of ten years when, by chance so Kay believes, they meet up again in Prague of all places where she has been working but now has to return home in time for her older brother's wedding. After all those childhood dreams and sorrows, she meets Harry, her childhood love, and the two have to battle against the most violent of storms to return to England, where Harry has also been invited to his best friend's wedding.
Hatred, tears, distrust and every other fear invade Kay at the very sight of Harry. Should she put her trust in him again, so they can overcome the battles of the raging storm she feels inside and that which is raging outside and try to get home.
