This is a fun overview of Stephen King’s life and work in chronological order. As a dedicated King fan, I enjoyed learning more about the inspiration behind books of his I’ve loved, and getting a glimpse at books still on my TBR. Some of the factoids are repeated and some of the book descriptions have spoilers but overall, quick and fun read for the King curious.

Fans of Stephen King or those who simply want to learn more about him, will find a treasure chest of information and insights in these pages and that in an engaging way.

This book starts at the beginning of Stephen King's career and follows each work he's released. Along the way, his life at the time the book was written or published comes to light...as well as interesting information surrounding each book. It takes a peek not only at his personal life, to a certain extent, but some of his thoughts, influences, struggles, and experiences. It hits the emotional and practical side of writing. This isn't a writing guide, but rather, recounts the experiences he had during the release of all of these works...both the good and the bad.

I did appreciate that the timeline flows with the release of his various tales. It keeps a close bond to him as a writer, without feeling like a personal life story or like a writer's how-to, either. Instead, it keeps the attention on his stories while exposing everything that went into them...or the things happening around that time which added influence. And it's entertaining. The writing doesn't over-exaggerate, nor does it fall into the danger of becoming dry. This makes it very engaging for the intended age group (and adults as well).

I do recommend this not only for Stephen King fans but also for class themes surrounding his works. Plus, it works great for usual, curious readers. It's simply well done.

This fantastic visual companion and literary guide by Bev Vincent (The Road to the Dark Tower) has been written with a young adult audience in mind, but whether you’re new to the world of Stephen King or a hardcore fan, a wide range of readers will enjoy this well-researched book. Biographical in nature and chronological in presentation, it’s a revealing look at one of the world’s most prolific authors, with a detailed focus on King’s writing process and influences.
In this compact full-color volume, author Vincent has compiled never-before-seen photos, memorabilia, and writings. It covers the full list of King’s books, short stories, movies, and other adaptations—from Carrie (1974) to You Like It Darker (2024)—and shows how expansive his influence is. Although Stephen King’s name is synonymous with horror, he has explored drama, mystery, thriller, crime, and fantasy. The popularity of his novels and their constancy on the bestseller list have helped his novels become a mainstay of popular culture. But success like his didn’t come easily to the “King of Horror.”
Readers and writers will be encouraged by King’s success despite his early financial struggles and addiction problems, and a horrific car accident that nearly derailed his career. Understanding the story behind each novel and adaptation makes this both an insightful look at a creative’s life, as well as a handy guidebook to all of King’s writing.

My Review
: Author Vincent's a King superfan, and believe you me, it shows. This compendium of anecdotes and overviews of his career, and the stories he's offered us, is exactly what a young fan will love.

Plenty of not-so-young fans too, I'll wager.

I'm not a Constant Reader, as he addresses his immense and well-earned audience online, more of a dibble-dabbler. I enjoy many of his massive tomes—my own favorite being 11/22/63—because I'm very old and that date means so very much to me. (Rob asked me once why that date was important...ouch.) The manner in which Author Vincent hits the life and career high points will make this a deeply welcome gift to your King-stan teen or tween. (Officially. We won't discuss what you do with it before wrapping it up.)

The design and visuals are very much up to the job, as one would expect from a Quarto Group imprint.

Clear, concise, not too busy to fail in its primary duty of informing as well as keeping one's interest.

I enjoyed the glimpse into King's early methods and processes.

It's safe to say we do not share a taste in companion animals. *shudder*

The stuff of literal nightmares for decades now!

...speaking of which...Tim Curry does Pennywise the best, in my never-remotely humble opinion. Skarsgard's got a different take, not worse not better...but give me Curry every time.

Here are a couple text-only spreads to round out your visual impression of the book. I'll stress that, even on my tablet, the design's readable and very appealing.

Solid design, appealing to a recipient fan, very intentionally a gift book. It's a terrific value at this price!

Although written for young readers, Stephen King fans of all ages will find much to enjoy about this book. It takes you back to King's early childhood, a time when he first realized he enjoyed being frightened, and takes us through his life and career with an interesting look at his books and adaptations of them at the end. While I'm not a regular reader of King, I mean, I don't like being scared, I know I was astonished to see it all in one place, in order, of his writings. Heck, the author even mentions some of King's college aged, more or less, poetry, as well as his various collaborations throughout the years. There are lots and lots of photos, too, not just of King but of his book covers and some of the memorable movie scenes adapted from his work, including two of my favorites, "Stand By Me" (from "The Body") and "The Green Miles" with Tom Hanks. I'm not sure I even knew he was responsible for "Shawshank Redemption" so, well, make that three of my favorites.

In any case, if you want to know where King was in both his life and, so to speak, his head at the time of his multitude of writings, you'll find this book fascinating. I know I did. It was all quite fascinating. I'll also note that while it doesn't delve into the troubled areas of his life, it doesn't sugar-coat it, either, making for genuinely revealing information. I really came to appreciate his wife, too, throughout the story. Most know the story of how she,Tabitha/Tabby (whose photo is shared), rescued his first major hit, "Carrie" from the trash, we also learn how it eventually found a publisher. And, oh, we also learn that while "Carrie" made King famous, he'd also been writing for some twenty years and been published, just not to acclaim. And, and, and....so much more.

The author does an excellent job not only delving into King's life but connecting life experiences that sparked ideas and even made their way into various novels over the years. You'll definitely come away with a new, improved idea of what is in each and how it came to be, not to mention reminded that despite his prolific ability to write book after book, King never found it easy. That's a good reminder for aspiring writers. Nope, it isn't easy. And, oh, speaking of the writing process, one of my personal favorite books by King, his "On Writing", came about after the accident that came close to taking his life. Details of that are in the book.

Bottom line, if you're a fan or simply curious about Stephen King and his books/writing process, this is an excellent start. Not only are there great photos but the author gives us a selected bibliography and end notes and the appendix is broken down to include books and adaptations. Seeing that lengthy list written down in one place is impressive, at least it was to me. Thanks #QuartoPublishingGroup and #becker&meyer / #becker&meyerKids for sharing this early, fun look into Stephen King's life and work. I had no idea. I'm feeling the urge to go back and reread some of those books now that I know more about where they came from.

I think this book was probably meant for younger readers. (I didn't realize that when I requested it.)

And for younger readers, it was okay. It did provide a comprehensive list of Stephen King's works and some backstory on his life and career.

However, for adult readers, it wasn't all that great. It was very, very repetitive -- going over some of the same information many, MANY times (sometimes using almost the exact same words/phrases). It was also FULL of spoilers. This didn't bother me much as I've read a good 95% of King's work already, but for someone else, this could have been a big, big problem.

Additionally, the sections on the books didn't provide any new information. It didn't really discuss themes or political relevance (which is actually quite prevalent in King's works) or anything. Those entries were just.... well... summaries. In most cases, you could get the same information from reading a not-overly-detailed review of the book on Goodreads.

Finally, I hated the way it was physically set up. This type of book may do better as a physical, turn-the-page type book that you can hold in your hand. As an ebook, it didn't work well. There were pages within pages. (Imagine a history textbook with the actual chapter and then little tidbits of information on the pages outlined in red border.) In a history book -- or physical book -- those kinds of "asides" are fine. You can keep reading the actual material and then flip the pages back to re-read the small summaries or extra info.

In ebook format, it's harder to do that. So, you're reading right along in the chapter and then suddenly, there's something totally new on the next page -- sometimes mid-sentence!

An example (not from the book -- just something I'm making up to illustrate the point):

Stephen Edwin King was born on September 21, 1947. He is an American author widely known for his horror novels. He has also explored other genres, such as suspense, crime, science-fiction, ***Stephen met his wife Tabitha in 1966, and it was love at first sight! They later married, and his first child, Naomi, was born in 1970. He married Tabitha in 1971, and they eventually had two more children -- Owen and Joseph.*** fantasy, and crime. He is also a prolific author of short stories and has even dabbled in poetry.

Now, don't get me wrong. Even in e-book format, the extra information was blocked off within a square outline. But still.... that kind of format doesn't play well in the ebook arena.

Overall, I wasn't a huge fan. But as far as a book for young readers new to King, I can see how it would contain some useful information.

This book is a brilliant read and a must-read for Stephen King fans. He is decidedly the king of horror. The book talks about his journey, childhood, struggles, influences, success and works. His story is so well narrated that it's unputdownable. The pictures are like cherries on the top. The book aptly describes what he went through while creating the magic that he presented to us, over the years. I hope to revisit this book a decade later; I am certain I will enjoy it as much as I did this time--or perhaps even more. Ben narrates, "Some people believe it is possible to learn about a writer through a careful reading of his or her work, others think a writer’s work is best understood by knowing the details and circumstances of that person's life. Which way does the mirror point or does it work in both directions." I think it works in both directions. Having a background of his life and journey has inspired me to read his books and I am sure I will relate his works with stories from his life.

My thanks to Netgalley for the Advanced Readers Copy.

What a great comprehensive compendium of Stephen King's writing!

On Writing is one of my favorite books of all time so when I first started reading Vincent's book, I was thinking, "Why would anyone read this when they could read On Writing?" But as I read, I began to really appreciate how Vincent wrote about the entirety of King's work. He described what inspired King to write many of his novels, how the novels crossed over with different references and characters, and particularly how King's life experiences and observations inspired the creation of many of his works.

I highly recommend this book for all fans of Stephen King. I also recommend it for readers who think they are not fans of Stephen King as well as they will see that while King is famous for writing horror, there are plenty of non-horror books to choose from; in fact they might serve as the gateway into a new appreciation and love for the Stephen King horror genre!

Thanks to #netgalley for the advanced reading copy.

What a wonderful book! This is basically a young reader's edition of Bev's other book, 'Stephen King: A Complete Exploration of His Work, Life, and Influences. It gives the same information with a little less elaboration in some areas than the adult version has. For example, there's a section about King's near-fatal accident, which contains a quote from King about the difficulty of withdrawing from painkillers - this information is included in the Young Reader's version but without the quote, so the subject matter isn't quite as heavy to read (and is more age appropriate).

There is also a shift between books in how Bev talks to the reader - it's subtle but in this edition, Bev focuses a little more on details that young people would find more relatable, and does away with minute details that would appeal to more lifelong, hardcore adult SK fans. He demonstrates a very good understanding of his intended audience here and after reading the previous adult edition, I was very impressed with how he approached and executed this one.

Absolutely perfect for younger King fans.

Really enjoyed this chronological deep dive into Stephen King’s body of work.
I read "On Writing" last year and loved it—it gave me such appreciation for his craft and discipline. My goal for 2026 is to read all of King’s books (yes, even the short stories and lesser-known pieces!).
A few summers ago, we visited Bangor, Maine and saw his house—an unforgettable stop for any fan. It took me back to childhood memories of sneaking peeks at my neighbor’s Stephen King collection. She was an avid reader, and though I never picked them up back then, the intrigue always stuck with me.
Now feels like the perfect time to finally dive in. King has truly stood the test of time, and it’s amazing to see him getting the acclaim he’s always deserved for the sheer breadth of his work.
More to come as I make my way through 60+ books—wish me luck!
📚 Happy reading, friends!

Stephen King: His Life, Work, and Influences is a nice compendium that really goes through not only all of the books King has released, but pulls from years and years of interviews to make a really concise and easy to follow historical record here. As someone who's been reading King since elementary school (sorry to my teachers) and is currently doing a very slow re-read, this was a great refresher and also, a nice collection of stories I've heard here and there over the past ~30 years all wrapped up and integrated into the works.

A really good reference book and a truly knowledgeable writer.

First of all - it's a great position not only for young adults that like creepy stories but also for people wanting to understand how King became a King of horror. Graphics are incredible and all information is delivered in bite size chunks which makes it a quite fast read. Great addition to the personal library if you like Stephen King

This was a great overview and resource for King's works.
Sometimes you wonder, "How did they come up with that?"
The answers are here.
I enjoyed the layout, quotes by King himself and photos of King as the years progress.
Also, have to note that books meant for younger audiences like this one are not only easier to read but, enjoyable in how they are presented.
If you aren't a fan, you may just become one after reading. 😉

Clearly written by a big fan, I thought the book was shallow. Lots of the text covers reviews of King's many books, and provides very modest insight into the author's motivations.

Stephen King: His Life, Work, and Influences by Bev Vincent is a fabulous and thorough read. I learned so much about Stephen King that I didn’t know prior. I loved the pictures from throughout the years. I also enjoyed how every piece of work - from short story to 1000+ page novel - was featured. This book is targeted for a younger audience but I think it is a fantastic read for all ages.

Thank you to NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group – becker & mayer!, becker&mayer! kids, and Bev Vincent for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is THE perfect Stephen King biography. While I am not the biggest fan of nonfiction or Stephen King, he is my husband's favorite writer, I have read a few of his works, and I am an educator.

My findings are that this book is perfect for research projects or King lovers. It has everything, from his life experiences to his novel influences. The novel information runs in publication order, so it was fun to see iconic titles and leans about ones I hadn't heard of before. This biography comes with fun King-world interludes and photos from childhood and significant events.

King's life and influences are so intriguing and even unbelievable at times. I didn't know about the major accident he had, and reading that and the connections to his writing and the secrets he plays into his writing after was one of the most interesting things I learned about the iconic horror writer.

A brilliant biography.

I'm on the fence about this one. On the positive side, it contains a great deal of good information about King and his work presented in an accessible and appealing way for young adults. On the negative side, many of the entries about his books are just spoiler filled summaries.

Despite its limitations, I think I would recommend this one to young readers who are just discovering King's books.
