It isn't until her boyfriend Tom heads off for his year abroad that Holly realises just how much she's going to miss him. But Tom's left her with rather more than just a passionate memory of their last night together. Holly's clothes are getting tighter, she has cleavage for the first time in her life, and the sickness she thought was down to the morning-after-the-night-before is lasting all day. Holly Piper is pregnant! Suddenly thrown into an alien world of antenatal classes, stretch marks and big knickers, Holly is relieved that at least she has the support of Alice and Maggie, her two broody best friends. But what of Tom? Holly isn't even sure how she feels about him, let alone his feelings for her. And she has no way of contacting him. A year is a long time for him to be away. But for Holly, the first nine months are going to be the hardest...

3 star read for me overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a light easy read which I enjoyed for the most part but it sadly didn’t blow me away. Some of the humour felt a little slapdash and stupid and may have been better suited to a chick flick film. Would recommend this to people who enjoy chick lit fiction but sadly not one I would read again!
Holly is a 27-year old vegetarian chef. She's in an undefined relationship with Tom, whom she loves. Tom is about to leave for a year long trip to travel the world and Holly doesn't want him to but is unable to stop him from going. The silver lining Tom telling her he loves her the night before he leaves. Unfortunately, Holly finds out she's pregnant after Tom leaves. Fortunately, though she has great friends to help support her.
I liked the realistic view this book had about feeling ambivalent about a surprise pregnancy like Holly's. The book wasn't preachy and wasn't clear cut black and white. While I don't agree with every decision Holly made, I could understand her reasoning in most of the decisions she made. I do thin, however, that the 9 months were covered pretty quickly.
This is Sarah Ball's debut book, published in 2002. I'll definitely be keeping my eye out for her other two releases.
i enjoyed this book to read whilst i am pregnant as i could relate to alot of things, i liked almost all of the characters and had a real sense of them all which i don't often get from books i usually just focus on 1 or 2 people. I loved holly the main character BUT i found how often she drank wine quite annoying and selfish didnt like to see that it was promoted to be okay to keep drinking alcohol.. but that's my personal opinion :) Nice easy read, i am pleased with the happy ending i was hoping for, let's hope i get my happy ending too!
