She poured fire into my cold, emotionless heart. Now all I see and feel is her.
I’m a cold-blooded killer from the deep, always getting MSA’s most hazardous underwater tasks. Fear and emotion are foreign to me, which makes me efficient but too callous to work with clients.
Even though close protection is not my forte, I’m assigned a human principal–a witness testifying against a criminal organization. She is fragile, clingy, and too warm. I hate her instantly, her affectionate nature clashing with mine. But this assignment comes right from the top, and I can’t refuse it.
Every minute I spend with her is an annoyance, until we end up trapped in an underwater cave, where her survival hinges on being shockingly close to me. Her warm touch on my body is like a powerful current that tears my shields apart. Her trusting eyes locked with mine destroy my peace of mind. For the first time, I'm flooded with feelings.
And they are all about her. I’m addicted, my heart and body throbbing with the onslaught of emotions. The only way to soothe the pain is to get more of her, more touches, more smiles, more affection. I crave her even though I know I’m a monster and a killer, and she deserves better.
I’m not selfless enough to let her go.

I have read plenty of Layla’s books over the years, This particular author has one heck of imagination and she does amazing job on her world building, But sadly I have never read any of the books in this series mind you there are stated as standalone, but still my mistake for not reading anything from this series… The details that she has put in every installment of her series it’s phenomenal…
My suggestion to you would be to check those Author’s Warnings on this one
Vodyan, he is one of the most highly regarded underwater agents for MSA’s in the northern states right now. , and he has had the task of protecting some of the most precious cargo at late .. All his missions until now have been successful. No one else can claim that, Even with that said he was somewhat surprised that he was tasked with protecting a human, Since he has not completed anything close to this in over eight years …. So, you can imagine how surprise he was He is usually tasked with transporting and protecting a rare flower to his species That is worth millions….
Zoe is in need of protection as she is the key witness in an upcoming federal investigation of human traffic ring…. To make matters worse it is a child traffic ring.
So Vodyan’s Supervisors decided that Zoe would be safest in a underground cave 150 feet below the water surface, since all the other Witnesses had been killed…..
Honestly, I don’t know about you. But no one in their right mind would call the depths of Lake Superior safe… But that’s just me…… I get that Zoe had some very damning Evidence against the ringleader…… and I get that same ringleader had focused all his resources on silencing her, but 150 feet below the water surface…. Yeah, I don’t know about that I think that I rather you just shoot me now. Okay moving on
Okay so it got a bit interesting there for a hot Second in between these two main characters….. see she was a social creature by nature, He pretty much kept to himself……so with the lack of company made her irritated and anxious.
She was a touchy-feely kind of person and he was pretty much literally a cold fish……. This was a slow burn but a fast pace reads with all the action going on as the ringleader had plenty of resources of all types of species out looking for Zoe ………
got me clenching and stuff. when will men start coming with 8 tentacles and 2 dicks when???
the spice in this? absolutely insane. they’re both freaky bitches. i shall now list some of my favorite scenes/quotes:
જ⁀➴ when vodyan could tell how touch starved zoe was (HE’S the touch starved one!) so he let her casually touch the water of his pool/bed while they were talking. she’d keep putting her hand in deeper and deeper. HE FEELS WATER. so for him it felt like she was caressing him allll over.
જ⁀➴ can you ever imagine your straight human boyfriend letting you fuck him? if you can— lucky bitch. if you can’t, no need. vodyan let zoe fuck him with his own tentacle after seeing how much it turned her on. he also timed it with fucking her 😮💨
His eyes focused on me, and he grabbed my hand, wrapping it over his tentacle. “Do you like it? Fuck me with it. Do anything you want.”
જ⁀➴ talking about tentacles. tentacles went EVERYWHERE. all over. every position. every way. 1 tentacle. 2 tentacles. 3 tentacles. girly took them all.
જ⁀➴ did i also mention vodyan’s magic cum? there was a scene where they were being chased underwater and her air tank was about to run out. not to worry though!
“What I’m trying to say is, you will be able to breathe underwater. Once you... swallow.”
જ⁀➴ he came. he saw. he bred.
“And when your shot stops working, I’ll put a baby in here. I’ll shoot my cum deep inside you, plug you up so it doesn’t come out for hours, and do it again three, four times a day until you have no choice but to get pregnant for me.”
some more quotes because i’m a slut for this octopus man if you couldn’t tell already:
“You will let me do anything with your pretty holes, won’t you, sweetheart? You will let me stuff you full and make you come, then fuck you raw until I come deep inside you, yes?”
“You’re insane,” I sobbed when his suckers pulsed harder around my nipples, his mouth returning to my clit with a long swipe of his tongue. “Only because you’ve made me so.”
“You really are good enough to eat,” I murmured without a smile, looking into her eyes. “Can I eat you?”
vodyan you & your 10 limbs will be SO missed.
this is probably one of my horniest reviews no one mind me i’m just a girl okay
I REALLY LIKED THIS ONE! I still don't think it beats out Guarded by the Snake for me, but this was another exceptionally solid entry to the Monster Security Agency series. I waited too long to review this and forgot the more intricate story details, but I know this includes a bodyguard-style romance with the FMC in hiding as an important witness to a criminal case, and the monster MMC acting as her protector and guide underwater. What better place to hide?
The MMC can live on both land and in water, so the story is able to take place in both settings: in the water itself, and also in indoor, dry safe house-style locations.
The MMC has a sad backstory and an icy exterior at first, but the FMC's sweetness leads to growing trust and affection between the pair, one the blends duty and devotion. But don't let the sweetness fool you! This one is SPICYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY and monster anatomy lovers are about to have their minds blown (like I did). The love and the lust both work better because the other is just as good.
This series is just too fun.

I really enjoyed the story. It was a very fun and captivating story. Anyways, I really like the main females character personality, she had spunk and she stayed truth to herself from beginning to end. She was very, very patient to the main male character and that paid off for her. He was able to opened up to her, and he fall in love and trust her. They found their happily ever after which, of course love.
I’d never felt like this before. Like… Like I was enough. It was heady, that feeling. Terrifying in that it was so completely unfamiliar, and yet as I let it in, because there was no hiding from it when Zoe was in my arms, it grew more and more pleasant, until it exploded with glowing heat under my skin.
This book has me on a legitimate emotional rollercoaster !! I was so obsessed, sad, happy, intrigued and a splash hot and bothered. If a book can do all these things it’s a winner in my book and it had me in turmoil from page one.
Many of you know that these security guards will do anything to protect the women they love. The way these monsters are described makes them seem terrifying and all powerful but they are marshmallows for their mates.
Madam Fae builds a world and a backstory for Zoe and all the danger and you are worried for her mental and physical wellbeing. While the story unfolds we find ourselves so engrossed in the jumps and turns. What will happen to this sweet teacher who was at the wrong place at the wrong time?
The man on a hunt for her is a villain straight from a comic book. Before Zoe can testify she has to make it one more month before the trial that will put señor villain behind bars. The reader fights the push and pull that is happening with her broody, gorgeous body guard Vodyan.
Vodyan is angry, can’t love and has one of the saddest back stories. It literally made me cry out loud. As I sped through this at the latest and earliest hours of morning I could not believe how darn good this book was.
I’ve read a decent amount of books by this author but monsters are my jam. This book was a 5 star read all around and I cannot wait to read more by this fabulous author.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is part of the Monster Security Agency (MSA) series. Just when I think Layla Fae can’t top these books I’m always pleasantly surprised that each new one becomes my favorite.
Vodyan is a Vodnik who is tasked with guarding a new principal, Zoe. Zoe was in the wrong place at the wrong time (or the wrong place at the right time depending on how you look at it). Zoe volunteers at a home for children and overhears some information that makes her a target for Matthias Carver, the man she put in jail. No one would think to look for Zoe underwater, making it the safest place for her. There’s also no place safer than right by Vodyan’s side. Vodyan doesn’t want to have to guard a weak human. He just wants to do his job and guard cargo but he’s the best (available) Vodnik for the job. Getting thrust together and forced to live in a safe house underwater isn’t anyone’s idea of fun. As the days go on the two grow closer and develop feelings that go beyond principal and guard. But Matthias is out of jail and wants revenge on Zoe, will Vodyan be able to keep Zoe safe or will he fail at his greatest task yet?
Vodyan is so sweet and has a past that makes it hard for him to trust others. He doesn’t have any friends and thinks everyone is right to be afraid of him. Zoe is the embodiment of sunshine and she hugs orphan babies in her spare time. As the two grow closer Zoe shows Vodyan that he’s not a monster and he is worthy of love. I really enjoy how much these two grew to care about and take care of each other. I want a Vodyan of my own.
“But this was Zoe. She was warm, trusting, and literally breathing my air. She was also my comfort. I remembered her hug that filled the abyss of cold inside me with warmth.”
“I didn’t understand what happened, but I loved it. It was as if his shell, his armor, all his barriers and defenses crumbled to nothing, revealing that hungry, wildly passionate beast with an insatiable appetite—for me.“
“You got me hooked. You want me in a way no one else ever did. It’s game over, pretty human. I’m not letting you go.”
Overall, this was a decent read, but I simply could not stand Zoe- she annoyed me on so many levels. I actually found myself thinking- I hope he dumps her too- which I knew wouldn't happen because this is a romance after all.
Hoping the Phantom gets a kickass FMC in his book.
This review is completely honest and if it seems like I'm obsessed that's just because I am. (Also, I don't really know how to write reviews well (?) so if this sucks, let me know.)
So, obviously, this was great. I mean, how could it not be? It's Layla Fae.
A little small review for those who want little to no spoilers: Their relationship was beautiful. The book isn't very long but it was still so amazingly paced that you could tell something was built instead of it being insta-love or insta-lust which is also sometimes good to read but doesn't feel as authentic I'd say. The fmc was AMAZING. She's so beautifully emphatic and always did the right thing in terms of communication, listening and comforting. The mmc is also just as amazing as her. The way he opened up was wonderful and I just felt so happy for him. There will not be a single moment you will feel frustrated with this book in terms of their relationship.
Alright, now, here's what I LOVED about the book. Just FYI, I will be graphic and VERY spoiler-y about it all.
✨️ Adult heroine. (30, if i remember correctly. But I don't just mean in terms of age. She was so beautifully mature and patient with him I almost wanted her to be my mom.)
✨️Obsessed hero. (He watches her pee because he won't let her out of his sight. Oh, and he also cleaned her up with water after she peed which had me squealing. I love stuff like that. Do I need to mention he mutilates people who try to/ hurt her?)
✨️Special equipment. (I mean, obviously. What is monster romance without giant, double, plugging organs and multitasking tentacles? And when I say multitasking, I mean MULTItasking.)
✨️Dirty talk. (I LOVE dirty talk so so much y'all have no idea. And Vodyan's dirty talk was so good. It kind of reminded me of dub-con dirty talk if that makes sense with the way he told her she would take it, he would make it fit and whatnot but everything in this book was FULLY AND ENTHUSIASTICLY CONSENSUAL so nothing for you to worry about if dub-con is not your thing.)
✨️All the kinks. (Breeding kink, I'd say there was definitely size kink, I don't even know what it's called when one uses their own appendage to penetrate themselves and also has her direct the movement of said appendage to give him pleasure but that kink *and apparently I have it because it was SO hot*, somnopholia *yup, you heard it right. Somnopholia. Also happens to be one of my favorite kinks. I do wish we got a more detailed description of the scene but oh well.*)
Y'all have no idea how obsessed I am with the hero as he had a couple of my book kinks in him wrapped in one. Everything he did was so hot. I was not disturbed AT ALL. I loved that he cleaned her up, I loved his obsession with breeding her, I loved that he took her while she slept. UGH. What a slay.
In conclusion, just read the book. I mean, if you've come this far you might have already read some of the other books and know this will be good but just in case this is the first one, read it. And then read the other books in the series. I personally prefer Layla's style more but the other authors are great and good as well. Oh, and then go read all of Layla's other books. 💅🏼
Layla is a monster romance superstar! Suspense…action…spice! Did I mention spice? Cause Vodyan has tentacles. 8 of them…with suckers…I mean, the possibilities are endless, and I think Layla tried to hit them alllll. The spice was so spicing in this book it had to be the first thing I talked about, lol. Cause once Vodyan’s outer shell cracked, he was ALL about Zoe and how many times he could get her to 💥. And it was fun to read, 🥵
Now that you’re sucked in, hehe, onto the story. The premise of this book is probably my worst nightmare, lol. For her protection Zoe spends a lot of the book on the bottom of Lake Superior. I hate even swimming in lakes cause I can’t see anything…shudder, plus I can’t hold my breath for anything so, yeah, I would just probably freak out and die since I wouldn’t have my very own Vodnik to calm me me down or you know, help me breathe underwater. Yeah, he does that for Zoe. It’s such a good part of the book I’m not saying anything else about it!
Vodyan is a tough nut to crack and has childhood trauma that has affected his adult life. With Zoe’s background she is perfect for him, and helps him through the shadows of his past. It was great to watching their relationship progress from bodyguard and principal to something more.
The underwater city where Vodyan lives was amazing! It made me almost wish it was real so I could go visit, lol.
This story has awesome action and suspense and the introduction to the next character was perfect as it has me wanting more!
Oh and if you love protective MMC’s who un alive unapologetically for his woman? Vodyan does not disappoint, 😏
Thanks for such a fun, action packed and spicy read Laya!
Things I liked about this book: the plot was solid and interesting. The author did very well describing actions, as well as the world around the two MCs. The sex scenes were *chef kiss* Things I didn’t like: The female main character irked me because she talked too much and rambled. The male main character I really liked, but when he started randomly calling the female MC “baby” and sweet talking her it felt very forced and out of nowhere. They barely knew one another so it seemed out of place.
All In all an okay book and very enjoyable, just had a few personal irks on my end, but those are my preferences alone. I will definitely be reading the other books in this series and hope they fit my preferences better.
My main issue was with the pacing; the MCs fell in love so suddenly, without much build-up or development, that I honestly thought I had skipped a chapter. After that, I lost some interest in what happened next. I did really appreciate the creativity, world-building, and unique aspects of the story. Those parts kept me engaged even when the romance felt rushed.
"She was so...So sweet. So filthy. So understanding, warm, affectionate, cheeky....So shockingly into me."
Another wonderful addition to the Monster Security Agency series! Vodyan is the Vodnik bodyguard charged with protecting Zoe, a key witness to a federal investigation against a child trafficking operation. Vodyan takes his job very seriously but his dedication is no match against the allure of Zoe and the strange feelings she makes him feel.
Vodyan is my new favorite MMC! His backstory is incredibly heartbreaking and Zoe is the perfect person to help him feel all the feels and heal from his trauma. The connection between Vodyan and Zoe is powerful and I love how patient Zoe is while Vodyan tries to figure out his own mess of emotions. This story is a slow burn but well worth the wait! The spice is top notch and everything I've come to expect from Layla. Definitely recommending this one to all my fellow monster lovers!
This was a really cute little story where our FMC , Zoe, finds herself in a witness protection programme and there is no one more trustworthy to keep her safe underwater than Vodyan.
I liked both characters as each one of them has struggled in the past and that kind of brought them even closer together.
This was a cute little story, one that has kept me entertained for sure.
This isn't the first book of this series I have read but I will say it is a top favorite. The first scene where they give in to each other in the house is pure heat. I wondered if someone's writing was gonna officially do me in without having anything else help. This hits that tentacle love dead on. We all wish one man could do what this Vodnik can.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was another fantastic, wonderful addition to Layla Fae’s body of work. The second I read the blurb for this sorry before it ever came out, I was already hooked. I mean, I love Layla Fae’s work so I was already excited for it but when I heard more about it and read about Layla’s thinking for the story and all the teasing? Sold. Instantly.
Vodyan and Zoe were a delight from the beginning and their journey together was beautiful. With Vodyan’s past revealed as the story goes on, it’s easy to understand why he reacts the way he does to Zoe’s new presence in his life while Zoe’s own experiences have shaped who she is and how she responds to Vodyan and his revelations.
I really enjoyed how Vodyan observed the world around him and how that shifted to Zoe and his reactions to her and I absolutely loved Zoe’s personality-she’s hilarious and cheeky.
The story did dip into darker topics and back stories for the characters but there is nothing terribly graphic played out on the page, in the ongoing present. With that said, it is still a very sweet story about two people seeking a connection (one knowingly and the other not) who feel misunderstood but feel more complete when they’re together. And though they both acknowledge falling for each other has helped them and made them happy, that love doesn’t cure everything which I feel is very important to mention. All in all, I enjoyed this story and I wouldn’t be surprised to find myself visiting it again in the future.
I’m part of the arc team and this received this copy early with the hopes for a review. I hope I did it justice and I hope you enjoy this new Layla Fae story!
I wasn’t the biggest fan of Zoe or Vodyan at first, but then I grew to like them & I absolutely love when an author makes that happen.
I loved their initial interaction, it was tense in a funny & giddy way, felt meh during the 20-50% mark, but then quickly became a fan of both mcs & their relationship once it got steamy & more heartfelt.
Zoe, like she admits, was a bit too needy & clingy for me to relate to, but I respected her awareness & ability to just be unapologetically herself, to be so open & emotionally conscious.
The mcs definitely had physical attraction, & though I thought they were lacking that initial emotional connection, they definitely made up for it later in the book. Their emotional bonding was brought about through their carnal play, & it worked for them, & since it was explored well, it also worked for me.
I enjoyed seeing how once Zoe got past Vodyan’s self-isolation barrier, he turned into a verbose smooth talker & fellow clingy, needy thing. A very compatible, cute & kinky pair.
Vodyan (H), a fierce and solitary vodnik, is tasked as a Monster Security Agency underwater agent with protecting Zoe (h), a human witness vital to an investigation. As they navigate the treacherous waters of Lake Superior, they face relentless attacks from lamias and the vengeful schemes of Carver, a dangerous adversary. As they face these challenges, Vodyan and Zoe form an unexpected bond, sharing their past traumas and fears. Vodyan and Zoe's relationship deepens from a reluctant partnership to a powerful bond marked by vulnerability and strength, and things heat up between the two. Amidst battles and betrayals, they find comfort and love in each other, forging an unbreakable bond. Hot and steamy monster-human adventure romance, exploring connection, survival, danger, trust, empathy, healing, and the transformative power of love.
4/5 Layla Fae once again brings a refreshing blend of romance and myth with a unique twist in Guarded by the Vodnik. This installment in the Monster Security Agency series stands out with a creature rarely seen in monster romance, a Vodnik, a water spirit from Slavic folklore. The concept was incredibly original, and I loved how the author wove in elements of danger, magic, and slow burn attraction while keeping the storyline fast paced and emotionally satisfying. The chemistry between the characters is engaging without feeling rushed, and there's a good balance between tension, protection, and mutual growth. It continues the trend of pairing strong heroines with protective yet morally grey supernatural beings, but still feels fresh due to the new lore and character dynamics introduced in this book.
