The Captain is book two in Ms. Wood's hockey series which is an enemies-to-lovers romance full of angst. We meet Lincoln and Cassie in book one, The Coach. Lincoln is a hotshot college hockey player and Cassie is best friends with Lincoln's sister Micayla. The two of them have a secret history that causes their love to have another but they also have a relationship history that saw hearts broken and now sees Lincoln trying everything he can to get her back.
Lincoln was a college hockey player in need of getting his grades up to stay on the team and the only person the coach thinks of is the one person who happens to be his enemy, Cassie. She is an English major and wants to be a writer. Time together sees things changing until a kept secret is found out and words are said that can never be taken back. In the present we see Lincoln trying everything he can to win back the woman that he cannot forget. She invades his thoughts, dreams and heart. We see Lincoln's character mature and make better decisions based on his past mistakes. He is hopeful these changes show Cassie that he is not the boy he was. Parts of him were swoon-worthy, like when he supported Cassie and her writing right from the start.
What I enjoyed about this book is getting the back history of the two of them. Ms. Wood takes us on a journey from their first meeting, the time spent together, and how everything fell apart. Their story goes back and forth from past to present giving us a picture of how the two of them met and how they got to where they are in the present.
