What’s the only thing worse than fighting the king of the Fae? Pushing him too far.
I taught witchling magic to the High King of the Fae. I helped him defend his realm. And then in the fullness of his generosity, he set me free. Great story, right?
Only, like most things when it comes to the Fae, ditching a contract with these guys isn’t so easy.
Turns out the magic that binds me to the deeply sensual, fiercely proud, ridiculously hot High King is far more twisted than I realized. I’ve been marked for death…or something way worse.
Now I’m on the run, my home destroyed, being chased through a realm of myth and monsters by more enemies than I ever thought possible. To break free of this screwed-up Fae contract for good, I’ll have to unravel a scheme three hundred years in the making and convince the king—who’s been tricked into falling in love with me—that he’s been played for a fool.

I loved book one (Teaching the King), meeting Aiden and learning more about the Hogan witches and what their connection was to the Fae. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Belle try to figure out what her family neglected to tell her and seeing her play catch-up to a newly crowned fae High King. And whoa, Aiden? Oh yeah, hot!
But, now? The action is just non-stop! I love every minute of it! Seriously, Belle and Aiden are having a terrible time figuring out everything needed to fight off the old but strangely unrecognizable enemy of Faerie. They are watching entire groups of Fae be killed and are scrambling, trying desperately to get a handle on saving those remaining. Only, no one left either Belle or Aiden any instructions! And poor Aiden, trying so hard to do the right thing, knowing that his father was not a nice guy and not wanting to follow in his footsteps. But he also doesn't want to lose Belle in the process. It's a harrowing tale and told so well!
DD Chance, a pen name for an author I have loved for years (we all know who she is!), is a great storyteller no matter what genre she chooses. This particular subgenre of paranormal academies, basically college kids with powers given whatever twists the author chooses, was fun when she started with Twyst, followed by Monster Hunters. But now, with Witchling, she has moved on from her "why choose" baseline. We now have a male/female storyline with characters we can follow from book to book while quietly tying in the first two series. She gave us a flowing story that grabs us as we delve deeper and deeper while sitting on the edge of our seats, anxious to see where it will go. Mystery and action, hand in hand. I'm loving every minute of it! Add in a moving love story, and DD Chance is giving us everything we could ask for. I'm now just patiently (or maybe not so patiently!) waiting for book three.
So excellently done, DD Chance! So excellently done indeed! You are a true wordsmith no matter what you write!
“Tempting the King” is the third installment in D.D Chance “Witchling Academy” series, the third series in the Boston Magic Academy cycle (After “Twyst Academy” and “Monster Hunter Academy”) and while the previous series are outstanding and very worth reading (in case you still don’t know due to some ‘prolonged stay under some rock’), there is not strictly necessary to be acquainted with them to enjoy “Witching Academy”, the previous two series will be waiting for you afterwards, win/win.
The Fae as a rule don’t do favours, they bind you with promises, that you are never ever able to break. Belle is fully aware and intends to acknowledge the contract (because let us be real a promise to a Fae is a binding contract with particularly “small print”, bound to bind you forever 😉), but the straightforward approach: teaching magic to King Aiden, helping him to defend the realm, and get him to set her free, will not exactly do, specially as Belle seems intended in putting any and all of Aidan buttons. In Belle’s defense, putting Aidan’s buttons is sooo fun 😊 Aidan has already make the first mistake, falling for Belle (don’t tell him, he will deny and make you promise some nonsense 😉); and Belle has an ingenious plan: unravel a three-centuries old ploy and convince the King he’s been played, it should go smoothly… should it NOT 😉.
Belle and Aidan have chemistry to fill a full college syllabus, Belle is credible, relatable, and fun, fun, fun and His Majesty, the High King of the Fae Aidan the most entertaining Fae TDHD (tall, dark, handsome, with a side of deadly) ever to graze the pages of YA Academy. This series have everything I love in academy and hold and behold it is not RH, nothing against RH, but I much prefer a more classical, slow approach to romance, thus it seems Chance has done it again, I just got ‘hooked’ in a new series 😊
I’m a huge fan of D.D. Chance writing, by any of her various pen-name incarnations. She writes it, I read it 😊, and never ever have I been disappointed in the least. Her writing style is unique, a mixture of hardcore adventure and whimsicality, that makes the book simultaneously light and surprisingly deep, with characters that show very real-life qualities in seemingly fantasy situations, an impeccable delivery, action-packed, fast-paced, and still with a carefully character description and a rich rendered YA/NA paranormal fantasy world. Chance possesses a rare gift for storytelling that turns every story into a reader’s delight.
Tempting the King is the second book in the Witchling Academy Series and there are a lot of really good revelations in this book! It picks up right after the prior story, with Belle’s bar going up in flames and Belle having to make a quick exit through a portal that sends her to a pretty rough monster realm. A new ally helps her to escape immediate danger and eventually they return to the Kingdom of the High Fae. Belle and Aiden are still trying to find the contract that binds the Hogan witches to the Fae King (and there’s some good movement along this plot line) but the kingdom constantly under threat by the Fomorians. Aiden and his allies are still preparing for their inevitable battle, but will Belle remain an ally once the terms of the contract are discovered?
I really enjoyed the book and loved all the revelations in this book. We learn a lot about the original contract and Belle’s old coven and it’ll be interesting to see how things play out in the next story. I liked how Belle and Aiden’s bond is strengthened in the story. I am also really curious if Belle’s side trip into a cave to help someone (trying really hard not to give anything away) will affect events in the next story. I liked many of the new characters in this book and have high hopes for Celia. My only minor complaint is that Belle got whisked away through a portal and against her will several times in this book and I hope that her magic grows enough in the next book for her to have more control over her fate. As others have mentioned, the story does end on a cliffhanger, but with the next book coming out in a month, that doesn’t really bother me. I definitely enjoy this series and am looking forward to what happens next!
I read a lot. Every day. This book however, did nothing for me. I was bored and actually avoided reading because of it.
The book is also a mess. It’s all over the place. There is no real underlying structure or cohesive storyline. It’s just a bunch of different things thrown together and expected to work. It just completely lacks any sort of flow.
The MFC continuously brings up the same q’s and situations. Even after they’ve already been answered. It doesn’t make sense. She also blames the MMC for the lack of knowledge that she gained from her mom and gma. Because that is his fault how? He shares every bit of info he can and gives her everything she asks, yet she blames him for everything. She constantly insults him, even after learning that what she thought had happened in the past was incorrect, even after he freed her of the contract and she chose to go back. Shes whiney. Unable to accept responsibility. She blames him for things his father and grandfather did hundreds of years before he was alive. Yet refuses any responsibility for her actions or those of her family. It just really gets old. Add to it that the book is boring and the storyline is mediocre at best, I am on the side of a non-recommend for this one.
To add, the grammar needs serious work. It needs a real editor in a big way. Those are pretty important things for a book.
Our heroine, Belle, is whisked away in the first book into the world of Fae she knows very little of. She basically knows they are the enemy which she and her family have been hiding from and she is being forced into servitude that was set into contract 3 centuries ago.
“Tempting the King” is book 2 in the Witchling Academy series. The action is fast paced. One conflict after another arises, and through the combined efforts of the Fae King, Aiden, and Belle they stem the tide of the enemy. These are just skirmishes – war is coming. Be prepared to be sitting on pins and needles.
D.D. Chance has filled her characters with life. You will not want to put this book down. I impatiently await book 3 – actually, I do not want this series to end.
Belle Hogan was free of the Fae contract…or was she. She still wore the crown and shackles and the coven had not only found her, but was burning tavern; her family legacy. Her time with Aiden was not over, she needed his help as he needed hers.
There were more twists in her tale of discovery and awakening. More enemies to face more secrets to uncover. Is the contract really fulfilled? What secrets were in her family’s and Aiden’s family past that could come back to haunt her. What were witches to the Fae and the Fae to witches?
A great continuation to the first novel and a wonderful set up for the next sure to be darker novel. As always great characters and new ones too with a compelling story that is hard to put down. I didn’t want it to end but look forward to the next installment with great anticipation
What an enjoyable story this is. I thoroughly enjoyed the first in the series (Teaching the King) and was really looking forward to book 2. It didn't disappoint. We left Belle fleeing disaster as book 1 ended, and take up exactly there with this story. There are even more twists, turns and tricks as the adventure continues, with Belle and Aiden trying to cut through the confusion and trickery to find out what is really going on and how to beat their foes. Their relationship strengthens, friendships are made, and more trickery is uncovered. I was halfway through this book before I even drew breath! It's definitely worth reading.
There are a few books out there with the nasty cliffhanger that I have to have the book like RIGHT. NOW. This little thriller is one of them. Magic, action, twisty's, so fast paced you have to pause to take it in. Delicious characters, glorious villains, mystery, mayhem. And that darned cliffy. I am totally seeking vengeance for our heroine. Good thing the next book is in a few weeks. I love this series.

Tempting the King is the second installment in author D.D. Chance's Witching Academy Trilogy. This book begins where Teaching the King finished. As the story picks up, Belle Hogan is in a lot of trouble. The one thing she owns in the world has been attacked by her enemies which her mother and grandmother had been hiding from for years. Thankfully, a portal opened that sent Belle to a Monster realm known as Riven District. It appears as though those in charge are lizard like creatures with forked tongues and they may be into very dark, and dangerous magic.
I think this may have been my favorite of all the academy series books that D. D. Chance had written. Belle and Aiden are going from one crises to another and discovering clues along the way related to the original Hogan Witch contract and the impacts it’s had on the Hogan witches through the years. Add in a monster realm, the White Mountain coven, and the ongoing fights breaking out in the Fae realm, it is hard to put the book down. Great read and I cannot wait for book 3!
Book 1 is good, but book 2 is GREAT! D.D. is crushing it with this series. It might be my favorite of hers so far. She threw in a couple of surprises that blew my socks off. I like that this series has one couple that is carrying through all the books. It is a bit of a change but I like it. Do yourself a favor and grab book one to start start the series. D.D. never dissapoints!
Another amazing read! Impatiently waiting for the conclusion.
Belle and Aiden continue to navigate a complicated relationship, as each learn to master new powers. Trust is formed and rules are broken, as Aiden learns all his family has lost over the years. Fast paced, full of adventure and magic and a love that fights all the forces against it. The twist at the end dropped my jaw!
I absolutely LOVE this book and series. An excellent read, well constructed plot and enough twists and turns to almost make you dizzy! Belle, a Hogan witch, continues her adventures from Teaching the King. Adventure, magic, desire and sheer enjoyment are the key features of this book and series. A MUST READ! Highly recommended!
Stopped on vacation to leave a review, it was that good! Got to read this gem on the Savanah at Animal Kingdom Lodge!! This was an amazing continuation of the series. I can't wait for the next one. My only sadness is, they are over too soon! I never get enough!
I love this series. There’s a great mix of a strong female lead character, romance, fantasy and adventure. The book picks up right at the end of book 1 as Bella escapes into the Monster realm, and ends with another cliffhanger. I can’t wait to read the third book in this series, which may well be my favourite of the Boston Magic series.
Fantastic second book in an excellent series. Follows on from the first, and completely invested in the characters and what happens next. Strong characters with a plot twist and can’t wait for the third.
OMG this book is great. Aiden and Belle saga continues. Belle found their true enemy by chance and who is helping is helping them. Great cliffhanger can't wait for the conclusion of the series.
Oh, I am LOVING this series! Loving the storyline and the character interaction between Belle and Aiden, and Niall and our new character. SO much fun! Seriously, grab it, you'll be hooked, too!
2nd chapter in the series- we continue to learn more about the culture and history of the characters. Unexpected happenings, changes, keep you wondering what is next and the final outcome.
I love how the love between Bella and Aiden is slowly developing. The story is beautifully written with lots of original imagination and the ending left me wanting much more!
Brilliant second instalment. Completely invested in the characters, and wanting it to work out for the two main ones. Good plot twist and have preorder the third one. Highly recommend this series.
I didn’t like the first one, but I needed to know about the contract, so I got sucked into this one. Everything that happened, you could see it coming from a mile away.
