Royally Cursed

Rate this book
I curse the day I ever met Kai DeLune. Literally.

In my defense, I put a curse on the gorgeous, domineering alpha for his own protection. Because if he somehow figures out we’re fated, neither of us will live to see the end of this shifter war.

It’s just my luck I’ve been assigned as his troop’s healer. Watching him from a distance is torture for me, and if he finds out the truth, he’s headstrong enough to think he can save the world, including me.

Except I’m past saving. I was already cursed long before I met Kai, and no one can ever find out.

But I can still save Kai. Or at least I thought I could until our military base was attacked and Kai was seriously injured. His only hope of survival is for me to lift his curse so I can get close enough to heal him.

Either way, the consequences could be deadly…

My ideal alpha shifter is a bit of a bad boy, he’s exciting, capable, justifiably self assured and confident enough in himself that I believe in him too. When he meets his partner his hidden depths shine through; preferably patience, reassuring calmness in the face of adversity, and kindness, but all whilst maintaining his alpha shifter integrity. This is fantasy after all!!

Kai is not this. He had this potential, but he loses the integrity and my respect when he simply accepts the irrational and disrespectful behaviour of his fated mate, whilst internally gushing on and on about her perfection. Is it truly realistic that the competent alpha leader of a military base rolls over so easily? Not in my fantasy.

Ayla has an intriguing secret which makes her a bit isolated and socially awkward. Even so, I found it hard to understand that when her secretly coveted fated mate finds out she has cursed him, she doesn’t feel the necessity to explain, she expects an excuse of keeping him safe, to suffice. Is that a believable reaction?

Additionally there is an over abundance of boring internal dialogue from both characters and a fair amount of annoying typos, which put me off the initially intriguing story.

The final straw though, was the chapter where they borrowed a six year old girl for a fun and laughter parody of the perfect family, bringing to mind a bad music video. Both of them visualising the potential perfect parent in each other, and this about 24hrs after the mate bond is discovered, and not yet cemented. Can we please establish a relationship before daydreaming about a family? I decided to quit at this point.

It took me awhile to finish this one simply because I lost interest along the way. The beginning pulls you in and then the ending leaves you wanting more!
Kia is the man of my dreams tho! He puts up with SO much from Ayla that most men wouldn’t. Ayla is so annoying to say the least! I get she has a curse but communication is key baby; use it! I want to know what happens but at the same time I think I’ll take a little break before starting the second book. I really hope Kia and Ayla get there happily ever after.

DNF at 32%. It's so repetitive, so boring, pages and pages of irrelevant filler while the relationship between them makes no sense. In a few hours they go from not talking to each other in 3 years, to breaking the curse and f*ck, to him getting angry because she hasn't told him about the spell, to forgetting about it and talking about children and playing moms&dads. There should be less internal monologue and more conversation between the protagonists, you can't be talking about having children with your fated mate when you haven't even dared to tell him about the curse.

This took forever to read. I never take this long on a book and I’m not even sure the dates are correct but still. So many useless words and descriptions. We know you are cursed you don’t have to mention it over five pages. We know you want to find your fated mate or you wish you could tell your fated mate. About 250 pages were unnecessary. Did Tristian and Irina really “die.” I’m pretty sure that earlier in the book the author stated that she was cursed by the Shrouded Shrieking guy. I felt I already had that information. I just don’t see reading the next book. I’m sure it’s 700 pages of I need to leave but I can’t. How can I break my curse but let me explain to you about my curse 75 times.

The storyline was really intriguing, but the internal monologue was sooooo long winded that it kinda ruined everything for me. It was like being beaten with the same thoughts constantly for pages and pages before any words are uttered. Even while in the middle of a conversation! Not to mention how silly both of them start acting when the curse she puts on him is broken.

And there’s TWO BOOKS? I don’t think I can handle finishing this one knowing how long it takes for one conversation to happen (like an entire chapter for just a few sentences between two people). 🙄🫣

Sorry, but I’m putting this on DNF.

This is book one of the Fated Love, Fated War series and the main characters are Ayla Everton, a witch of the Sanguis Coven and half-shifter (or cryptid) doing her military service as a healer/soldier at Fort Canid, and Captain Kai Reed, an alpha wolf shifter from a massive pack. They are in the midst of an eternal war, with numerous different types of shifters, witches, vampires, changelings and more, fighting against an army of similar types, with no one on either side really knowing what had started it. She was raised by witches, but is part shifter and doesn’t know all of the society rules those brought up in the shifter world would know. She knows the difference between mates and fated mates, one being a choice, the other well, fated and not something you can ignore normally! Kai is Ayla’s fated mate, but she tries to stay away from him, however much her friend and really powerful psychic Sergeant Darla Khan wants to drag her to the mess hall, where he is welcoming the latest batch of new recruits. She had been cursed as an infant by magic user who had it in for those of her age, and the witches who raised her were unable to break it or remove it. She calls the curse her the Malignant Shadow, and she ends up hurting anyone close to her. She has tried to act as a hermit, only being around Darla or eating alone, and most of her quad know to leave her be. She had created her own spell to ensure that Kai’s inner wolf could not sense her in any way, as it was the only way to keep him safe, and that was all that mattered to her. She was always warned by those raising her, to keep her half-shifter side secret, so she is only known as a witch at the fort.

Their foe for the last twenty years were the Kingdom of Vekas, who want to dominate everything and everywhere, with humans living a separate life and keeping out of the fight between what they think of as monsters. After the latest attack by the enemy, Ayla insisted on going out onto the battlefield, to help the injured soldiers, which Kai doesn’t take well, until Darla is badly injured and she manages to save her with her healing magic. He sends a team of guards with her, but when she uses them to take patients back to the infirmary, she ends up all alone and almost out of magic. Kai meanwhile had gone to the front of their ranks when he got hit by a huge magical spell and was unable to do anything as the magic started eating away at him. Ayla could feel him and his injuries through their bond and managed to find him on the battle field, which was obscured by fog, but she had to drop the spell on him to be able to heal him. She ended up having to use some of her own life force to heal him enough for him to survive, leaving her little left to put the spell back in place. When he awoke days later in the infirmary, his best friend and colleague, Lieutenant Oren Leveen, a fellow alpha wolf shifter and childhood friend, he wanted to find his fated mate, who he had sensed in the battle. It was the same feeling he’s felt some three years ago and drove himself insane almost, trying to find them and Oren had to stop him. Ayla is worried he will sense she is his mate, but it seems her secret is still safe for now.

Tristan, one of the scouts for Kai, comes back after the battle, to tell him of worrying news of the enemy planning numerous attacks on human villages, to thin the defending army. Kai must come up with a plan to protect the humans, not that many would thank them for their interactions! It is Ayla who comes up with a possible way to protect the villagers in a safe haven, but it will mean travelling to see her former coven, the place she ran away from years ago in the middle of the night. They may not want to see her nor allow her to take one of their sacred relics to use for protection of the humans. The coven lives separate from all others and don’t interfere with what happens outside of their own wards and protections. Only Ayla is allowed within the coven’s wards, but the price they need to pay is going to be a high one. Things are not going to be easy and more death follows Ayla, as the curse someone placed upon her as a child, takes those she knew in the past and gets close to killing off members of the team she is with. There are signs of the Shrouded Shriek, an ancient and powerful warlock turned mercenary, who is on the enemies side, helping to kill many. Why the figure seems to be concentrating on Ayla, as the fort is attacked once again, with the relic being used to help protect the innocent just in time, is left to Kai to wonder as he, Oren and Mad Dog come to her aid. After the battle, Kai tries to be with Ayla as thy were on the mission off base, but she wants to go back to ignoring their mate bond, not wanting him hurt or to die by being near her! Not something he will accept, but he has also been hiding a huge secret from her that could change everything completely between them! A visitor to the fort reveals all in front of her and leave Kai reeling as his secret is revealed and he thinks the news will make her refuse to be with him ever again. A shocker of a twist at the end of the first book. Lots of action in this battlefield tale, along with a fated mates romance with a magical twist trying to deny it all on one side. I certainly want to find out the link between the Shrouded Shriek and Ayla, and see if it was linked to her curse. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Rating: 4/5 stars

Main Tropes/Features: Fated mates, Shifter romance - Wolf, Military MCs, Alpha hero, Close-proximity, Cursed MCs, Magic

Secondary Tropes/Features: Virgin heroine, Praise, Secret Relationship, Royalty, Fantasy/Paranormal characters

Triggers: Whilst some of the triggers are prominent in the story due to the nature of the wider plot I don’t consider their presence to be overly graphic or have the potential to be highly triggering due to how they are written. Triggers include:

Royally Cursed was an enjoyable Fated mates Shifter romance that I loved way more than I thought I was going to.

Ayla was a professional and righteous individual whose penchant for hard work was both admirable and partly disreputable when used as a device of self imposed isolation. She was an intriguing character who was largely cold and aloof at the beginning of the book but could become cute and flustered in an instant when it came to others showing affection in both romantic and non-romantic ways. She was a character that I enjoyed learning about when it came to both her history and personality and thought she was well developed and I look forward to seeing what else we learn about her.

Kai wasn’t your typical Alpha male or Military hero. Yes there were moments of justifiable self assurance, assertiveness, and dominance but that wasn’t who he was/has been in this story so far. Kai was righteous, warm hearted, compassionate, and at times sweet. It made for a nice change of pace when it came to alpha male heroes and made him a likeable character and again one I enjoyed learning more about when it came to both his history and personality.

I thought this romance had an original take on the fated mates trope and enjoyed the plot surrounding Ayla’s curse and her actions to curse Kai so he didn’t know they were fated mates to protect him. I loved how the plot surrounding her curse and their bond as fated mates evolved as the book continued and I cannot wait to see how it continues in part two in addition to the unfolding storyline centering on Kai which came to the forefront during the latter half of the book.

My favourite thing about the romance development in this book was the display and exploration of emotion - both good and bad. Through Kai having lived with the feeling of having found but already lost his mate I think his perspective really highlighted the contentment and peace that comes from finding a fated mate. It was easy to connect to this depiction of emotion from his character and I enjoyed his excitement about what it meant for the both of them now that they had now found one another. We got to see Kai and Ayla flirt and engage in teasingly cheeky behaviour that brought some fun to a story that was very trying at times. Their fated mates depiction so far hasn’t been all instant desire and steamy scenes which would have minimised the ‘rightfulness’ of their love and would’ve seemed out of place amidst the danger and drama of the time they are in - simply put it made the story more enjoyable. There was then the depiction of the hurt both from Kai having found out what Ayla did and from a part of Ayla regretting taking away decisions that should have been Kai’s. I think these scenes and the emotions brought forward in them were just as well written and presented as the good. Whilst some readers may think that the much needed discussions over Ayla’s behaviour was over too quickly I think the plot is going to come back to this after the other drama and storyline quietens down a little.

There were plenty mentions of other mystical and paranormal individuals in this book but only a few really became side characters with a clear presence within the narrative. Darla, Oren, and Maddox (Mad Dog) were great characters who I also enjoyed reading about. Darla had an infectious upbeat energy to her that I look forward to seeing more of and Maddox was a character I couldn't help but love a little. These three individuals are ones whose stories I am just as invested in and I hope there will be plenty more of them to come in the future.

With plenty of romance, secrets, drama, and adventure to keep you engaged this has the potential to be a book you fly through. I wanted to jump straight into the next one when I finished this so having to wait for part 2 is something I’m not going to enjoy but I think the wait will be worth it.

Favourite Quote:
“I know you’re protecting me, and I know that your curse is real, but I’m not going to let that stop me from loving you how I was meant to.”

Royally Cursed has a whole lot of fabulously good reading ahead so grab your beverage of choice and settle in for the dynamics that will be layed down in this splendidly written Paranormal Fantasy and book one in the author’s new Fated Love,Fated War series.

MFC Ayla is a witch/wolf shifter healer serving in the paranormal war that’s been waging since long before her birth. Her shifter side she keeps secret which becomes ever more complicated after discovering her fated mate among the ranks of Fort Canid, MMC Captain Kai.
Ayla has had to place a small curse on him so he remains unaware SHE is his mate, while suffering the loss of him in silence.

Her reason for doing so is to keep him from harm because she herself had been cursed as an infant with anyone she loves or cares about loosing their lives.
GOODNESS, there is soooo much going on in this story with many twists and turns, and I just loved it!

There is nothing better for a reader than to be drawn into a book so throughly you become part of it, and any lover of a good story knows what I mean.

Between the writing, action, adventure, intrigue, suspense, secrets, emotion, romance, great world building, and wonderful characters you’ll be as thrilled as I was with this journey as the mystery of Ayla’s curse and the outcome of her bond with Kai will be just the beginning of this ultimate escape into another world.

We end with a cliff hanger and I surely hope that second book won’t be too long in coming!

Highly Recommended!.

An ENORMOUS amount of spelling mistakes It felt rushed and sloppy and there was so much going on but the story still dragged on for hundreds of pages.

The book was split into two parts and it was confusing when the two frankly didn't even feel like the same book. All of a sudden an entirely new plot twist is thrown into the mix and the military storyline/environment the characters started in was completely forgotten. There was no cohesiveness in the writing and even principal character names continuously alternated between two different spellings (Tristan vs Tristian? Pls make up your mind how it's spelled)

The relationship between Kai and Ayla evaporated as soon as they reached the kingdom. Personally could not connect with any of the characters and I found myself quickly losing interest when every interaction had the same monologue and the same arguments - all about FMC Ayla and her "malicious" curse. There was no depth or connection between the characters that advanced the plot or made it slightly more intriguing to read. The magic system and power play make no sense and there's little to no world building.

Overall, I felt like this entire book could have greatly benefited from an editor and should've been about 400 pages shorter.

started out great

Started out great, but the curse is overbearing and a very heavy handed tool… with all the magic flying around that can do almost anything this curse can literally kill and destroy witches of incredible power with ease….

The curse should’ve been toned down a little because it is actually harming the story…the curse should’ve been removed at the end of this book since the world has a lot of other issues as it is that were very intriguing but her coven, friends, and everything.

The shrouded shriek is like the Joker…he attacks people for fun…..and the curse is where he gets his laughter from…otherwise why curse her when he could just easily kill her and he was trying to kill her earlier in the book so the curse makes little sense.

Anyways I will read the next book, but I didn’t care for the insane power level of the curse….since it makes no sense. The power level of the curse is to great to affect anyone and everything- it simply doesn’t fit.

No excitement.
Kai is a square with no personality.
Ayla is your typical idiot female character.
The plot doesn't move smoothly.
I got to the part where they put together a team to go to Ayla's coven and decided I couldn't drag myself through this. It is painful.

Fort Canid.... that was so.....cheesy.

Wilson doesn't bother to read her book, though, because there are so many errors! The second time mentioning Fort Canid, it's written as Ford Canid. There are extra words and missing words. There are awkward word choices and just straight-up wrong words. Smells instead of spells, position instead of potion, just stupid shit like that, but everywhere!

An editor would have advised to trim all the ridiculous inner monologue and useless dialogue. All the scenes of eating did not add anything to the read but unnecessary length and boredom.

If an author can't be bothered to put forward their best work, then I can't be bothered to read it.

Love this couple

This was really entertaining. It's quite long, but for the most part didn't feel slow or unnecessarily dragged out. I looked the world-building a lot. Kai and Ayla are both great characters. Ayla is strong, smart and determined, but mostly she has a great heart. I really enjoyed her. Kai is a great match for her. Equally determined and strong.

There are plenty of internal and external conflicts and obstacles, but they are so easy to root for. Especially with all the action and drama and suspense. It's a wild ride that's feels like constant motion with few breaks. But still some sweetness and understanding when they come. I really love these two any time they are together.

There is a cliffhanger and I'm looking forward to the next book and spending more time in this world.

Overall it was a good book but there are some inconsistencies in the book. Like at one point he told her he loved her, and then later in the book and was having an inner dilemma about wanting to tell her he loved her but not having done it yet becuase it was too soon. And another one was the main girl was cursed as a baby, and she talked about who cursed her and how she knew who it was and then throughout the book they talked about trying to figure out who it was then they ended the book with the cliff hanger of a big revelation that she figured it out. But like she already knew but suddenly forgot thoughout the rest of the book, kind of annoying? So maybe the author's should fix that 🤷‍♀️ also some spelling mistakes, like names were spelt different on different pages and a lot of times it would say Ford instead of Fort.

I liked the premise of the story, and the characters were interesting. Unfortunately the book is far, far too long. It could do with significant editing to remove the repetitive and unnecessary parts. For example, the second time the hero and heroine are intimate, I don’t need to be reading a commentary in his brain about his experience with other women, the things he’s learned that he can’t wait to share with the virginal heroine 🙄
Then I realised that it’s not even a complete book, but a series. So even if I did invest 6+ hours to get to the end of this book, I wouldn’t even get a HEA. Byeeee 👋

Very PC

This author has good writing skills. She has potential. Yet....her politically correctness ruined the story. The ONLY shifter book I have read where their clothes stay intact. What????? I saw a short cartoon someone made as a joke. Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. The Prince just has to kiss her and she will wake up and they will live happily ever after. Well. Because she could not give him permission to kiss her, she stayed in her poisonous coma. This is what this book was about. I read it for its entertainment value. Enjoy the read.

What a story! I love a good shifter romance and I absolutely loved this one! The way the characters came together, the way the story played out was so well put together. The chemistry and the angst between these two was great! I especially loved the way the ending played out! Wow! Can’t wait for another one! Great work!.

I'm feeling generous with this rating. The story is interesting but bogged down by the awkward writing. I likes the story but the internal monolog and charater dialogs need a lot of work. They are boring to read and I find myself skipping a lot to get to the point. It is as if the author wrote a good book then asked themselves "how can I increase the word count?". It's hard to enjoy a book when you lose interest everytime a character speaks.

It was a good read, but so long! It felt like it was filled with tons of character development, which was nice, because we really get to know the characters and get a feel for their personalities in both calm and stressful situations, but it was at the expense of moving the plot forward. Not to say that the plot doesn't develop at all, because there are certainly a lot things happening in this book, it just seems off-balance in comparison.

The great thing about stories is an author can make a world come to life. This story has love, romance, tears, war, pain, twists, lies, light sizzle, and a very detailed life line of love among the shifter world.

Action packed

I couldn’t stop reading. There is so much I love about this book. The story starts in a war zone but ends in a totally different kind of war zone. The only thing about this book that I didn’t like was the fact that the next book isn’t out until April! Can’t wait for the next installment!

Good Story Line

Unique story and very interesting. Cannot wait until second book. There are some scenes where it could be enhanced. The death of their comrades for example is so brief it doesn’t feel real. I think if a little bit more emphasis could be placed on the scene making it more poignant and would have improved Ed the overall storyline.

Needs revision

This could of been a good story. I generally dont leave reviews under 4* but this needing saying. It needs some srious editing. The spelling mistakes alone where atrocious it felt rushed and sloppy. I powered through as I said it could be a great story if all the mistakes were proofed.

Liked the story, was curious about this curse put on Aryla but alas 37% in and seems like it’s not a well thought out story line. Everyone dies around her… but what only if she’s friends with them? Huh? Bunch of witches died after she left the coven, which doesn’t make sense as she’s away from them?
Also did not really like the romance, over the top cheesy and insta love. Blah

Oh my goodness, this was MUCH too long! The beginning… actually the first half was great but then it became so tedious. I was shocked at the ending’s “reveal” of who caused the curse because I thought it was obvious who did it. I’m exhausted from this.

I had to DNF this one….. I LOVED the idea and as much as I want to know the outcome, the plot was longing it out and the female main character I found to be insufferable. Gutted (but not enough to finish the book)
