A Pleasant Introduction, But Not a Canonical Stoic Resource

The Stoic Book of Quotes by Michael Whiteclear is a pleasant little collection to keep on your Kindle if you’re looking for a daily dose of inspiration. The book gathers more than 500 quotations and reflections intended to introduce readers to Stoic philosophy and encourage resilience, calm, and personal growth. (Amazon)

I enjoyed dipping into it from time to time, and several of the quotations prompted me to think more deeply about Stoicism. However, as my own study of Stoicism has become more serious, I found the book lacking as a scholarly resource.

One of my habits is to trace quotations back to their original canonical sources—primarily Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Epictetus, Musonius Rufus, and the surviving Stoic fragments. Too often, I found it difficult or impossible to verify where certain quotations originated. That makes it hard to recommend as a reference for anyone who wants to study Stoicism in its original context.

That said, not every Stoic book needs to be an academic text. If you’re simply looking for a bit of daily encouragement or an easy way to dip your toe into Stoic waters, this is an enjoyable companion. It’s especially appealing since it’s available through Kindle Unlimited.

For readers who want to move beyond inspirational quotes, I’d recommend spending time with the original Stoic writers themselves. Their words are richer, more nuanced, and every bit as relevant today as they were two thousand years ago.

A lot said in a few words

I started to read this book several years ago and found I wasn’t ready for it. I picked up several months ago and suddenly realized what the author was trying to say. Or the ahhhhh! Moment hit me. What seemed so hard to understand suddenly was plan as day. I now understood what the author understood. What perception the ancients had. This knowledge was discovered thousands of years ago. I nor a lot of people just weren’t ready to try to understand what they had discovered.

Really makes you think. A great collection to take something from, although if you don't know much about or understand philosophy some will confound you.

Varied quotes

Great for morning readings. Varied quotes from several stoic philosophers. Reading just a few quotes or pages a day made for an easy read.

A worthwhile read

A good collection of quotes. Some are more interesting than others but there are more than enough that are worth while. Time well spent.

A book that I will keep in my library

It is a well curated collection of Stoic quotes. First, you just read it. Then read it and highlight the quotes that speak to you most. Write them out to your journal to reflect on. This will give you the most value, I believe.
