A collection of vivid and powerful testimonies from the conflict in Ukraine, collated and illustrated by award-winning artist George Butler.
While reporting on the war in Ukraine, George Butler has created striking and intimate illustrations to introduce us to the people behind the headlines. His drawings, made in a variety of places from missile-scarred streets to nursing homes, vividly capture stories of family, tragedy, and perseverance. These powerful portraits of war and conflict are a timely reminder of the humanity we all share and our universal need for peace. A stunning, illuminating, and sensitive look at stories that deserve to be told.
A heartbreaking but also beautiful tribute to the people who are seeking to survive and defend Ukraine from a barbaric Russian invasion. I recently met with some officials from Kharkiv so when I saw this at the library I was drawn to both the subject and the art. It is an important reminder of the human toll this war is taking but also the bravery, courage and determination that is on display. The art provides another layer of understanding and context. In many ways a hard book to read but worth the time and effort.
Ukraine: Remember Also Me: Testimonies from the War is a children's large hardbacked book featuring testimonies from 24 different people who are living through the war. From grandmothers to soldiers, headteachers to students, this book covers a variety of individuals who all want to share their experience with others so that we don't forget what is happening in Ukraine.
Within the book there are stories, drawings and the odd poem. All are heartfelt and touching.
Some stories are a few pages long, others just a few paragraphs. There is no order in which the reader has to read them and they may find that some hit harder than others.
Overall, Ukraine: Remember Also Me: Testimonies from the War is a book that covers many subjects from a war-torn country including loss, hurt, being scared, trying to live etc and I would advise adults give the book a read before letting a sensitive child read it.
Beautifully illustrated and absolutely heartbreaking for me as a Ukrainian. A lot of stories were about people and locations in Kharkiv, where I'm from - I couldn't hold back tears looking at drawings of the underground stations used as shelters (despite having seen numerous photos before, these drawings were so powerful in conveying the pain and the strength of Ukrainians). Thank you, George Butler, for making the people from your book seen and heard. This is one of the best books I have read in 2025.
This book was poignant in that George Butler, an award winning artist, did ink-and-watercolor drawings--not photos--of his surroundings and various people he interviewed for the book in the war zone/disaster areas of Ukraine.
This is a powerful and moving book that captures the strength and resilience of the Ukrainian people in their battle against the russian invasion. The story of Nata and Artem from Mariupol is especially heart-wrenching, leaving a lasting emotional impact.
The stories and drawings brought sorrow and happiness, but his beautiful artwork and dialogue were outstanding. These people love their country and their families. This horrible war shouldn't still be current.
Heartbreaking, but hopeful accounts from people across Ukraine during the ongoing invasion by Russia. Ukraine: Remember Also Me covers individual experiences, lives past, hopes and dreams, among other topics. Timely, important, and well worth a read.
Many personal stories from Ukraine that help you understand how people are getting by in wartime. Just a taste of the hardship and suffering that so many are living with.
