American Vampire started off as a unique vampire story spanning 3 different eras, 1920s Hollywood, 1880s Wild West and then the 1930s.
This is a different take to the usual vampire story, in that there are packs and different breeds of vampire with their own strengths and weaknesses. The start of the graphic novel focusing on Skinner Sweet.
You’re lead to believe Skinner is the main character, but around the halfway mark, we only get glimpses of him again and takes a back seat.
For me, the jumping around of storylines was jarring - and meant that no single storyline could gather a momentum or conclusion.
This DC Compact Comic edition includes issues 1-11 as well as the origin story of Skinner, written by Stephen King.
I really enjoyed the art style by Ralph Albuquerque, and there was plenty of gore without holding back.
There were definitely plenty of things to enjoy with this graphic novel, and if DC release the remaining issue in this series in the Compact editions, then I’ll pick that up to finish the run.
Though overall, I reckon there are better stories out there to be read in the comic book world.

i can see why it’s a classic and i’m starting to get the feeling that the compacts are not for me…👴👓🤏
the story itself doesn’t pick up until second half and it takes getting used to jumping around to different times, locations and character povs
definitely a big investment series (not as much as one piece doe) but the biggest thing that kept me reading was how they used vampires to personify evil like that wacked up bit when a vampire pull up to a pregnant wife of a jim gordon ahh character and was like i think i want a kid and had his blood on a syringe 😟
interesting commentary on the progression of america too - this could be my twilight 🦅🦅🦅

Благодарение на препоръката на ценител (специални благодарности на лицето Меляков, знам, че ще го прочете) и след дъъълго отлагане, най-сетне се сдобих с едно много евтино издание на първите 11 части от тази поредица - едва 16 лева за над 300 страници комикс си е блага оферта отвсякъде!
"Американски вампир" се развива в много интересна версия на нашия свят - единствената разлика е, че има вампири, при това - различни видове. Те се различават по това, че мрат от различни неща. Проблемът е, че новопоявилият се подвид "Американски" не ще да мре от нищо. Освен това, различните групи имат различно разбиране за живота и докато едните са стари, богати и седят в сенките, то американския няма проблем да "неживее" нормално и да прави зулуми (т.е. повече или по-малко масови убийства).
Сюжетът започва с преследването на банда престъпници, оглавявани от първия "американски" вампир във все още дивия запад и постепенно достигаме до "Златния век" в Холивъд през 20-е и 30-е години на 20-и век. Историята не престава да се развива, да се обогатява с нови и многопластови персонажи.
Много добри истории, хорър с немного кланье, но качествен, а бонусът е, че в първите пет броя, сценаристът-създател на поредицата рабори в съавторство със Стивън Кинг!
"Американски вампир" е още един комикс, който доказва, че може да има качествени истории в тази форма. Ще продължа да чета следващите броеве от различните поредици и разклонения с надеждата, че някой ден ще бъдат издадени на майчин език И, че някой ще се сети да направи сериал по тях!

pretty solid story, the jumps from perspectives and timelines made it a little difficult to follow at first but ended up being pretty good.
skinner sweet is genuinely just a bad dude and giving him that opportunity to be a vampire just amplified his potential that’s what i was rocking with though, he’s continuously just tormenting generations of the same family.
pearl’s story was pretty interesting too she really just wants a normal life with henry but she’s the most powerful vampire like what.

2.5/5, docked a half star for presentation. The DC Compact Series had potential to become my favorite mode of ingestion but this piece of shit binding fell apart before I was halfway through.

What I love so much about the DC Compact Comics Collection is that it really encourages me to read stories that I normally would have had absolutely no interest in before. As someone who collects this entire line, it is very exciting to see what will get a reprint next. So when American Vampire was announced to join the original ten compact releases, which I had never even heard of before, I was excited to see some horror representation amongst the many genres DC Comics explores.
“Unique” would be the word I use to describe this graphic novel, as it is probably the most “different” of the line. I was very intrigued by the involvement from Stephen King, even though I am not a huge fan of most of his work. Between his involvement, Scott Snyder at the helm, and the overall artwork/cover catching my eye — I knew I would be in for an interesting time.
American Vampire: Book One is a pretty solid comic. It has a great art-style that fits the overall vibe it is going for. Everything is so dynamic and horrifying in the best possible ways. I also liked the heroines at the forefront of the story, as well as the social commentary of the rich elite being literal bloodsuckers. However, I am personally not big into vampire lore, so much of this was lost on me. Along with this, American Vampire is a rather sexually-charged graphic novel with a lot of sex and nudity, and has a really edgy tone that was a bit of a turn off for me. I know it is part of the horror genre and is key in the appeal of stories like these, but it was just not my thing.
The period this is set is was both a highlight and a detriment. It jumps from the Old West to America in the twenties and thirties. At times, I was honestly expecting Jonah Hex to show up — that was how much it was giving me whiplash during certain parts. It is a bit confusing at times, but maybe it was just me.
Anyway, this was a great addition to the DC Compact Comic Collection. I loved the art and its unique genre/storyline. Although I love gothic literature, this just was not really my thing. Vampire lore is confusing, and I would have preferred to have this just take place in just one place/time, and dialed it back on the edgy swearing and adult content. I know that sounds childish, but it felt like it was trying to be too hip and cool — leading to it kind of falling on its face here and there. I do recommend checking this out, even if it is just for the sake of variety. I have a friend who intentionally avoids graphic novels that have “Book One” or “Part One” as a subtitle (and will likely not get a second part in the same format), which I understand. However, I advocate to push forward and give a first part a chance, even if you do not end up reading part two — which includes this release of American Vampire. Overall, I can say I genuinely liked it, but just did not love it.

With incredible art and characters that feel real and relatable despite their incredible circumstances, this book plays with vampire lore and 20th century history in a really cool and exciting way. The way the story weaves through time, interacting with each setting and its characters in a unique way, makes the volume consistently interesting and gripping. Very frustrated that I have to wait for the second volume of this new edition. Brilliant.

I enjoyed the narrative, liked the defamiliarization from traditional vampire stories while simultaneously leaning towards classic vampire folklore...kinda like Gaiman's American Gods with mythology. My one regret was buying it in this format; this was a brand-new copy, and the glue came loose half way through my first read. May seek out HC versions stitched together instead.

An absolute masterpiece. Each of the characters are well written and the presentation of their current life with their backstory is very well blended. Can't wait for the 2nd book. Highly recommended to any Vampire fans who wants to experience something outside the stereotypical Vampire stories.

This one was very cool! one of the best uses of the DC Compact format I have read! Such a dynamic and expansive timeline, with solid Vampire lore built into the cast, from ancient to American Vampires! Happy to be back in the Vampire genre!

I found the first half hard to get into. A lot of set up and I often don’t finish a whole issue in a sitting. Most comics I read a couple issues a night. It really picked up though with the second story and by the third I was totally into it.

One of the best DC Compacts out there; an amazing story paired with complimentary art that will keep you hooked until the very end. Highly recommended, especially for fans of the vampire genre

GODDAMN. that was so fucking good. that was one of my first adult, non superhero comics and i’m obsessed. it’s graphic, gory, and about vampires- how could I not love it. I read the whole thing in 2 sittings because once I started i just couldn’t stop.

Скіннер Світ був злочинцем, що грабував банки та полюбляв солодке та солоденьке ("Give me some sugar, baby!") в часи Дикого Заходу. Одного разу йому не пощастило навідатися в банк багатія-вампіра, і той зажадав зробити зі Світа приклад для інших бандюганів, аби вони не лізли до його власності.
Звісно ж, про вампірство багатія ніхто не знав. Згідно сеттінгу цього комікса, європейські вампіри гуртом поперли у Новий Світ, бо це ж країна нових можливостей, де всім певний час буде пофіг на твій крик посеред нічних прерій. Та й заробить грошенят можна. Вампіри класичні, карпацькі, найрозповсюдженіша порода, не люблять сонця, мастяться кремом, щоб не згоріти, а як нема крема, то ходять під смішними парасолями. Смішними, поки з вас оте пафосне опудало не починає пити кров. Подивіться-но на цього вампірчика Персі, він такий кумедний, пухкенький, а потім р-раз - кров’яка на всі боки!
Врешті решт, Скіннера таки спіймали і поїздом відправили на місце страти. Та в Світа був заздалегідь підготовлений план. Який через вищезгаданого вампіра звернув не туди, куди хотілося лиходію, а в сюжет цієї історії.
Скіннер - не якийсь там звичайний вампір з фобіями. По ранішній зорі він не страждав від сонячного світла, бо став, так би мовити, вампіром-мутантом, підвидом вампірів Нового Світу. Майже Блейд, але білий, лихий і вміє отримувати від життя задоволення. Та для початку йому довелося відлежатися в труні під водою, ба те містечко, де його поховали, було затоплено через бізнес-плани вампіроєвропейців. Навіть у своєму іншому житті Скіннер з ними пересікається, бо серії потрібне не лише антигерой, а й персонажі, на фоні яких його можна сприймати як янгола (хоча з цим, напевно, виникнуть проблеми).
Який сюжет без додаткової драми? І вона тут є у вигляді Перл, провінційної дівчини, яка поїхала підкорювати Голлівуд, але стала харчем європейських вампірів. І добре, що Скіннер вирішив по-своєму допомогти дівчині…
Вампірські форми. Оскільки Скіннер є вампіром-мутантом, то це не могло не відзначитися на його, так скажімо, бойовій формі. І тут автори вчинили дійсно оригінально, зобразивши щось середнє між гуманоїдом, вампіром та гримучою змією з довжелезними іклами. Виглядає вбивчо, жовті очі в комплекті, видає “хссс” краще за вашого кота.
На початку двадцятого століття у цьому вигаданому всесвіті Скіннер став легендою завдяки журналісту, що написав про нього книгу. І хай Скіннера вважали мертвим, але по радіостанціях крутили постановку, яка брала за основу ту книгу. В нас тут рекурсія: вигадана легенда про вигадану легенду, яка насправді у вигаданому світі не є легендою.
Перший том Снайдер написав разом зі Стівеном Кінгом.
Сюжетні лінії кількох персонажів. Тут є, власне, сюжет про становлення самого Світа, і він у ньому виступає як антагоніст. Для нього вирізати ціле містечко заради помсти - це раз плюнути. Ніяких вагань, коли маєш таку силу. По суті, перед читачем розгортається вестерн з вампірами, де у кожної групи персонажів був свій привід ненавидіти Світа. Європейцям він просто заважав, тому що претендував на той самий ареал (це якщо сприймати вампірів як альфа-хижаків для людства), бувші пінкертонівці занадто натерпілися від Скіннера, члени банди Світа не бажали ділитися з ним здобиччю, яку колись награбували. Світ зіграв по-своєму. Чому він вчинив так, як вчинив, невідомо. Можливо, всі інші вороги здалися йому нецікавими та одноразовими. Можливо, він хотів побачити, що з того вийде. Поставити під сумніви моральні принципи свого супротивника, перевірити його витримку та силу волі. Не кожному ж хочеться стати тим монстром, з яким боровся. У фіналі законник Бук отримав весь час світу, щоб поквитатися зі Світом (дідько, недолугий каламбур!), якого знову вважають загиблим. Ну, ви знаєте ці фінали у хоррорів: не все так однозначно. Але те, що комусь може видатись подарунком долі, для іншого буде занадто важким тягарем. Що, доречі, стало основою для нової історія про американського вампіра.
Другий сюжет про Перл, яка просто опинилася не в той час і, так-так, не в тому місці. І Перл - позитивний персонаж. Так, вона, по суті, є творінням Світа, але Світ з якогось дива вирішив не заморочуватись з ліквідацією своїх старих ворогів, а використав слушну нагоду, щоб перетворити дівчину на зброю. Та й мститися їй теж було кому. Скіннер лишається десь на фоні, в тінях. Формально у нього перемир'я зі старими вампірами. Видно, в минулому щось завадило Скіннеру остаточно перебити європейців, а оскільки історії нам розповідають паралельно, то це трохи спойлерить сюжет зі Світом. Що ж чекає Перл у фіналі її першої сюжетної арки? Зрада. Довготривала та підступна. Дівчині не вдалося розібратися з гемоглобіновими наркоманами у сутичці під величезними голлівудськими літерами, тому довелося тікати. Бо яким би крутим та блискуче свіжим вампіром ти не був, тебе просто візьмуть кількістю та досвідом. Втім, вона влаштувала кровопивцям другий раунд. У фіналі Світ вирішує не вбивати Перл. Так, вона була його інструментом, і з того всього могло вийти казна що. Банальна людська цікавість перемогла звірячі інстинкти? Чи і Скіннера з'явилися нові ідеї, як використати Перл?
Сценаристом другого тому був лише Снайдер. І тепер сюжети про Перл та Скіннера збалансовані інакше.
Початок, як у нуарного детектива, але з таємничим носферату і вбивством для затравки. Сюжет охоплює період будівництва гідроелектростанції біля Лас-Вегаса. Оскільки це грандіозне будівництво передбачає залучення величезної купи робочих рук, то на них можна поживитися. Інколи навіть в буквальному сенсі. Контролю з боку законників у місті не вистачає, і у мутну воду приходить Скіннер. Туди ж потрапляє Феліція Бут, дочка давнього ворога Світа. Потрапляє для того, щоб начебто допомогти місцевим копам розгрібатися, та насправді її ціль зрозуміла - покінчити зі Скіннером. Скіннер швидко орієнтується та нагадує їй, що у тієї організації, на яку дівчина працює, є договір з ним. Вони не мають його чіпати. Ось так, інтрига в вампірському бойовичку. Поставлю ще один плюс за це.
Вбивства у Лас-Вегасі продовжуються.
Тим часом та ж сама організація полює на Перл, тому що вважає її найнебезпечнішою вампіринею у світі. Та полює поки що не для того, щоб вбити, а щоб випитати, яким чином їх, американських вампірів, можна ліквідовувати. Бо зі Скіннером треба шота рєшать. На диво, Перл відмовляється ділитися цією таємницею, бо Скіннер, яким би не був, по факту врятував її життя. Та якби ж цю таємницю оберігала лише Перл…
Номінально центральним персонажем сюжету можна вважати поліцейського з Лас-Вегасу, якому жбурнули вампірські розборки, але цього копа чекає дуже неприємний сюрприз, і не один. Та й у Скіннера був свій план у плані.
Фінал арки про Лас-Вегас лишає по собі купу гачків. Сили добра наче перемогли, але це лише тимчасова ілюзія. Скіннер десь там, серед великої Америки, Феліція своїх намірів не полишила, європейські вампіри-банкіри продовжують мутити свої оборудки, а одинокий коп посеред засніжених гір несе заплічний мішок, у якому борсаєть та шипить щось жовтооке.
Закінчується другий том короткою аркою "Вихід є", в якій стара подружка Перл, Хетті, виявляється умовно живою (умовно - бо вона вампіресса) та з величезною жагою знайти ту саму Перл та покарати. А Перл живе зі своїм хлопцем у тихому містечку, аж поки не стається одна цікава подія... Ця арка не дуже масштабна і призначена лише для одного - повернути в історію хитру кликасту рижуху. Арку малює інший художник, який намагається слідувати стилю Альбукерке. Виглядає схоже, та й на малюнку не дуже концентруєшся, оскільки історія швидка.
Другий том знайомить нас з фракцією мисливців на вампірів, "Вассалами Вранішньої Зорі", а також додає трохи лору про самі види кровопивць та про боротьбу між ними. Так колись кроманьйонці перебили неандертальців, і причина тут насправді не дуже важлива.
Скіннер та глибина. Нам не дуже багато відомо про минуле Скіннера, до того пограбування банку, але навіть та інфа, що є, дозволяє скласти враження про персонажа. При цьому його вчинки лише ілюзорно прогнозовані, і видно, що поганця цікавить саме процес. У іншому випадку він діяв би набагато ефективніше. З іншого боку, на момент самоусвідомлення своєї нової ролі як хижака наступного покоління Скіннер ще не розібрався у собі повністю, не дізнався про свої слабкі упирячі місця, і це додає у сюжет інтригу, бо про слабкості практичним шляхом дізнається його "творіння", Не факт, що сам Світ зробив це раніше поза кадром. Світ не тяжіє змінити своє злочинне життя-буття, та й навіщо, якщо його все влаштовує? При цьому він навіть певним чином впливає на розвиток країни, направляє історію певних міст у тому напрямку, до якого сам тяжіє.
В плані розкриття персонажу з Перл все простіше, і для цього не знадобилося робити ні спін-оффів, ні величезною купи поворотів у флешбеки. Той випадок, коли все на вітрині. У першому томі персонажі-люди розкривалися, звичайно, але деякі - ліниво. Хлопець у Перл хай і сміливий та підготовлений (бо пройшов Першу Світову), та чогось більшого про нього дізнатись не дають: так, музикант, так, грав у спік-ізі і чіплявся до дівок, поки не зустрів нашу героїню.
На відміну від Генрі, з Буком все добре, принциповий пінкертонець завжди йшов до останнього, хоча і довелося йому попрацювати на вампірів, про що він не знав. Сімейна драма, до якої був причетний Скіннер, могла б підкосити копа, але він встояв. Вольова людина та типовий персонаж вестерну, якому довелося побачити всіляке лайно.
Ще одну драму Скіннер влаштував головному герою другого тому, і там теж персонажа розкрили на всі сто відсотків.
Щодо рижухи Хетті, то… Чогось не вистачає. Так, прагнення піднятися будь-яким чином - це теж мотивація, але що там ще було в минулому? Що ще коїться в її голові?
Найцікавіше, маю надію, нас чекає далі.
Відверта жорстокість. В цьому коміксі можна побачити, як комусь буквально відривають обличчя. Здається, Джокер робив таке сам із собою, тож Снайдер повторив у "Бетмені" самого себе. Кров, понівечені тіла, відірвані голови - цього тут достатньо, аби нарешті прийти до тями і зрозуміти, що історія не збирається згодовувати читачеві сяючих вампірів-школярів з якого-небудь янг-едалту.
Може не сподобатися постійне перестрибування у часі вперед і назад, але самі часові періоди ніхто не приховує, і послідовність подій зрозуміла.
Різкий, зубастий малюнок Альбукерке дуже личить цій історії. Не варто також забувати, що художнику довелося працювати з антуражем різних епох, а це неабияка задача. Постановка кадрів бере краще з вестернів (це, насправді, в руках майстра вигляда не дуже важко, бо, наприклад, для нагнітання напруги використовуються силуети озброєних чоловіків у капелюхах, а у тінях щось приховується, блищить буркалами та тягне лапу до своєї жертви; бойові сцени смертельно прекрасні) і класичних фільмів жахів.
Звісно ж, про вампірство багатія ніхто не знав. Згідно сеттінгу цього комікса, європейські вампіри гуртом поперли у Новий Світ, бо це ж країна нових можливостей, де всім певний час буде пофіг на твій крик посеред нічних прерій. Та й заробить грошенят можна. Вампіри класичні, карпацькі, найрозповсюдженіша порода, не люблять сонця, мастяться кремом, щоб не згоріти, а як нема крема, то ходять під смішними парасолями. Смішними, поки з вас оте пафосне опудало не починає пити кров. Подивіться-но на цього вампірчика Персі, він такий кумедний, пухкенький, а потім р-раз - кров’яка на всі боки!
Врешті решт, Скіннера таки спіймали і поїздом відправили на місце страти. Та в Світа був заздалегідь підготовлений план. Який через вищезгаданого вампіра звернув не туди, куди хотілося лиходію, а в сюжет цієї історії.
Скіннер - не якийсь там звичайний вампір з фобіями. По ранішній зорі він не страждав від сонячного світла, бо став, так би мовити, вампіром-мутантом, підвидом вампірів Нового Світу. Майже Блейд, але білий, лихий і вміє отримувати від життя задоволення. Та для початку йому довелося відлежатися в труні під водою, ба те містечко, де його поховали, було затоплено через бізнес-плани вампіроєвропейців. Навіть у своєму іншому житті Скіннер з ними пересікається, бо серії потрібне не лише антигерой, а й персонажі, на фоні яких його можна сприймати як янгола (хоча з цим, напевно, виникнуть проблеми).
Який сюжет без додаткової драми? І вона тут є у вигляді Перл, провінційної дівчини, яка поїхала підкорювати Голлівуд, але стала харчем європейських вампірів. І добре, що Скіннер вирішив по-своєму допомогти дівчині…
Вампірські форми. Оскільки Скіннер є вампіром-мутантом, то це не могло не відзначитися на його, так скажімо, бойовій формі. І тут автори вчинили дійсно оригінально, зобразивши щось середнє між гуманоїдом, вампіром та гримучою змією з довжелезними іклами. Виглядає вбивчо, жовті очі в комплекті, видає “хссс” краще за вашого кота.
На початку двадцятого століття у цьому вигаданому всесвіті Скіннер став легендою завдяки журналісту, що написав про нього книгу. І хай Скіннера вважали мертвим, але по радіостанціях крутили постановку, яка брала за основу ту книгу. В нас тут рекурсія: вигадана легенда про вигадану легенду, яка насправді у вигаданому світі не є легендою.
Перший том Снайдер написав разом зі Стівеном Кінгом.
Сюжетні лінії кількох персонажів. Тут є, власне, сюжет про становлення самого Світа, і він у ньому виступає як антагоніст. Для нього вирізати ціле містечко заради помсти - це раз плюнути. Ніяких вагань, коли маєш таку силу. По суті, перед читачем розгортається вестерн з вампірами, де у кожної групи персонажів був свій привід ненавидіти Світа. Європейцям він просто заважав, тому що претендував на той самий ареал (це якщо сприймати вампірів як альфа-хижаків для людства), бувші пінкертонівці занадто натерпілися від Скіннера, члени банди Світа не бажали ділитися з ним здобиччю, яку колись награбували. Світ зіграв по-своєму. Чому він вчинив так, як вчинив, невідомо. Можливо, всі інші вороги здалися йому нецікавими та одноразовими. Можливо, він хотів побачити, що з того вийде. Поставити під сумніви моральні принципи свого супротивника, перевірити його витримку та силу волі. Не кожному ж хочеться стати тим монстром, з яким боровся. У фіналі законник Бук отримав весь час світу, щоб поквитатися зі Світом (дідько, недолугий каламбур!), якого знову вважають загиблим. Ну, ви знаєте ці фінали у хоррорів: не все так однозначно. Але те, що комусь може видатись подарунком долі, для іншого буде занадто важким тягарем. Що, доречі, стало основою для нової історія про американського вампіра.
Другий сюжет про Перл, яка просто опинилася не в той час і, так-так, не в тому місці. І Перл - позитивний персонаж. Так, вона, по суті, є творінням Світа, але Світ з якогось дива вирішив не заморочуватись з ліквідацією своїх старих ворогів, а використав слушну нагоду, щоб перетворити дівчину на зброю. Та й мститися їй теж було кому. Скіннер лишається десь на фоні, в тінях. Формально у нього перемир'я зі старими вампірами. Видно, в минулому щось завадило Скіннеру остаточно перебити європейців, а оскільки історії нам розповідають паралельно, то це трохи спойлерить сюжет зі Світом. Що ж чекає Перл у фіналі її першої сюжетної арки? Зрада. Довготривала та підступна. Дівчині не вдалося розібратися з гемоглобіновими наркоманами у сутичці під величезними голлівудськими літерами, тому довелося тікати. Бо яким би крутим та блискуче свіжим вампіром ти не був, тебе просто візьмуть кількістю та досвідом. Втім, вона влаштувала кровопивцям другий раунд. У фіналі Світ вирішує не вбивати Перл. Так, вона була його інструментом, і з того всього могло вийти казна що. Банальна людська цікавість перемогла звірячі інстинкти? Чи і Скіннера з'явилися нові ідеї, як використати Перл?
Сценаристом другого тому був лише Снайдер. І тепер сюжети про Перл та Скіннера збалансовані інакше.
Початок, як у нуарного детектива, але з таємничим носферату і вбивством для затравки. Сюжет охоплює період будівництва гідроелектростанції біля Лас-Вегаса. Оскільки це грандіозне будівництво передбачає залучення величезної купи робочих рук, то на них можна поживитися. Інколи навіть в буквальному сенсі. Контролю з боку законників у місті не вистачає, і у мутну воду приходить Скіннер. Туди ж потрапляє Феліція Бут, дочка давнього ворога Світа. Потрапляє для того, щоб начебто допомогти місцевим копам розгрібатися, та насправді її ціль зрозуміла - покінчити зі Скіннером. Скіннер швидко орієнтується та нагадує їй, що у тієї організації, на яку дівчина працює, є договір з ним. Вони не мають його чіпати. Ось так, інтрига в вампірському бойовичку. Поставлю ще один плюс за це.
Вбивства у Лас-Вегасі продовжуються.
Тим часом та ж сама організація полює на Перл, тому що вважає її найнебезпечнішою вампіринею у світі. Та полює поки що не для того, щоб вбити, а щоб випитати, яким чином їх, американських вампірів, можна ліквідовувати. Бо зі Скіннером треба шота рєшать. На диво, Перл відмовляється ділитися цією таємницею, бо Скіннер, яким би не був, по факту врятував її життя. Та якби ж цю таємницю оберігала лише Перл…
Номінально центральним персонажем сюжету можна вважати поліцейського з Лас-Вегасу, якому жбурнули вампірські розборки, але цього копа чекає дуже неприємний сюрприз, і не один. Та й у Скіннера був свій план у плані.
Фінал арки про Лас-Вегас лишає по собі купу гачків. Сили добра наче перемогли, але це лише тимчасова ілюзія. Скіннер десь там, серед великої Америки, Феліція своїх намірів не полишила, європейські вампіри-банкіри продовжують мутити свої оборудки, а одинокий коп посеред засніжених гір несе заплічний мішок, у якому борсаєть та шипить щось жовтооке.
Закінчується другий том короткою аркою "Вихід є", в якій стара подружка Перл, Хетті, виявляється умовно живою (умовно - бо вона вампіресса) та з величезною жагою знайти ту саму Перл та покарати. А Перл живе зі своїм хлопцем у тихому містечку, аж поки не стається одна цікава подія... Ця арка не дуже масштабна і призначена лише для одного - повернути в історію хитру кликасту рижуху. Арку малює інший художник, який намагається слідувати стилю Альбукерке. Виглядає схоже, та й на малюнку не дуже концентруєшся, оскільки історія швидка.
Другий том знайомить нас з фракцією мисливців на вампірів, "Вассалами Вранішньої Зорі", а також додає трохи лору про самі види кровопивць та про боротьбу між ними. Так колись кроманьйонці перебили неандертальців, і причина тут насправді не дуже важлива.
Скіннер та глибина. Нам не дуже багато відомо про минуле Скіннера, до того пограбування банку, але навіть та інфа, що є, дозволяє скласти враження про персонажа. При цьому його вчинки лише ілюзорно прогнозовані, і видно, що поганця цікавить саме процес. У іншому випадку він діяв би набагато ефективніше. З іншого боку, на момент самоусвідомлення своєї нової ролі як хижака наступного покоління Скіннер ще не розібрався у собі повністю, не дізнався про свої слабкі упирячі місця, і це додає у сюжет інтригу, бо про слабкості практичним шляхом дізнається його "творіння", Не факт, що сам Світ зробив це раніше поза кадром. Світ не тяжіє змінити своє злочинне життя-буття, та й навіщо, якщо його все влаштовує? При цьому він навіть певним чином впливає на розвиток країни, направляє історію певних міст у тому напрямку, до якого сам тяжіє.
В плані розкриття персонажу з Перл все простіше, і для цього не знадобилося робити ні спін-оффів, ні величезною купи поворотів у флешбеки. Той випадок, коли все на вітрині. Hmmmm not sure how I felt about this.
Pros:
- Old World vs. New World vampires, with the difference
- Focusing on different time periods in American history. I REALLY enjoyed the Las Vegas / Hoover Dam chapter. I didn't know much about the construction of the dam, and I enjoyed how its history was interweaved with the story.
- Skinner and Pearl's origin stories, both were interesting and tight.
- The art and coloring are both awesome. Rafael Albuquerque and Mateus Santolouco don't hold back on the gore. Even the women are grotesque, with unhinged jaws, sharp teeth, spindly limbs, and massive claws. The coloring (Dave McCaig) is soft and atmospheric, and works BEAUTIFULLY with the line art.

- Pacing. I thought the pacing for the first half was great. I had decent time with each character and plot point. The start of Las Vegas was solid, but wrapped up too quickly.

Worth the price. 320 color pages for $10? Hell yeah. I really like the format, although I wish they had redone the lettering to accommodate the smaller size.

This was a tonne of fun! A nice bloody thrill to get me out of my reading slump and a fresh take on vampires.
It’s a good balance of tropey and also deliberately trying to modernise parts of the vampire mythos to fit a western and 20th century setting that’s a lot of fun. I will say that there is a bit of a pacing problem. This book moves like lightning and most threats and side plots are squashed in the same issue they’re introduced.
That changes with the last few issues though, they start to set up some wider ideas that are a lot of fun and the characterisation of the different factions, Pearl Jones (the main anti-hero) and her ex-best friend turned arch enemy Hattie and Skinner Sweet (the fun, campy villain of most of the comic) is compelling and something I want to check out more.
I also love the artwork here. It’s gorgeous, vibrant and gory and I especially love the different way the “new breed” of vampires are drawn with elongated mouths and teeth practically splintering out of the skull compared to the classic Legosi look of the old breed of vampires. The action shots are stunning too, the same level of detail and artistic flair is given to all the violence on display, whether it’s a character being poisoned with red wine or when someone’s face is being ripped off.
It’s marred by pacing problems and only becoming a wider story in the final issues but I can’t think of a better horror comic to use to introduce someone to the genre and the more fun sub genres of weird west and 20th century horror.

Scott Snyder is well-known for his American Vampire comics, but what many people might not realise, he got Stephen King to help write the backstory of one of his main characters, the Vampire who started it all.
Skinner Sweet a criminal in the old west, ended up dying at the hands of a vampire after trying to escape imprisonment. Now he's become a vampire himself and a unique one at that, throughout the many years he'll come across many people whose lives he'll destroy and ruin, some he'll even infect. Nobody can stand up to him, not the vampire hunters, not even his own fledglings.
This first compact release combines the first two-volumes of the American Vampire series including the backstory written by Stephen King to explain how Skinner Sweet became such a menace to his nation. I bloody adored this comic, its graphic, brutal, grizzly, explosive, action-packed and with a lot of heart. I'm genuinely considering about buying more of this series, I love the heroine vampire of this series Pearl Jones and her charismatic, caring nature despite what she's become. The bits focusing on she and her husband were definitely some of my favourites.
Overall: An incredible comic that I'm mortified it took me this long to read. 10/10

Definitely not the book I was hoping for.
On paper, the premise sounds amazing: three interconnected vampire stories told across different eras and locations. The potential is huge—each time period and setting could’ve added a wild, evolving layer to the vampire mythos. And to be fair, the artwork is absolutely stunning.
So what went wrong?
The story just isn’t compelling enough to care about. And the characters… oof. Shockingly weak. Let me open a quick parenthesis here though: the Las Vegas arc with Cashel and Gus was actually enjoyable and had the spark the rest of the book desperately needed.
But overall? Too many characters, none of them deep enough to make the narrative matter. For example—what’s the deal with the European vampires? Are they seriously only motivated by money and power? Or Sweet—why does he basically continue being an outlaw like nothing happened after turning into a vampire? And Pearl and Hattie… a storyline that starts strong but ends on such a bland note.
Long story short: I walked away pretty unsatisfied.

Or Sweet—why does he basically continue being an outlaw like nothing happened after turning into a vampire? And Pearl and Hattie… a storyline that starts strong but ends on such a bland note.
Long story short: I walked away pretty unsatisfied.

I really enjoyed the first half of this thing, but man, the pacing kind of tanks once it switches perspectives to Cashel. He’s not a bad character by any means, it’s just such a different setting compared to the first. On top of that, once it switches to the modern day, there’s a good chunk of the story that doesn’t show any vampires, which is the best parts. I’m definitely biased in my review since I love western settings so much, but I have other reasons too. After the time skip, the newer characters aren’t as interesting and we don’t get to know them nearly as much as the previous ones. I understand this is a comic series with specific issues and everything, so the pacing might’ve gotten worse when putting all of these comic issues back to back. The villains are great, especially skinner sweet. He’s one of the most menacing villains I’ve seen. I loved the vampires and all of fight scenes, which were drawn amazingly!

Oof… I like Snyder’s other works so my hopes were a bit higher, but this was rough, to say the least. The art is okay, but the story jumps around so much that it’s almost impossible to tell what’s going on. I think it was around issue 7 or 8 or so that I just completely lost track of whatever was going on.
And on top of that - the story wasn’t all that compelling by itself anyway, in my opinion. I didn’t really care for any of the characters like at all, and the jumping around timeline-wise didn’t help me grow to like them at all.
I knew once I got the feeling of ‘why am I even reading this when I could be reading something more interesting and way better?’, it was time to put it down. Oh well… just goes to show how far Snyder’s writing has come, I suppose.

This was pretty meh for me. And it was a lot more pulpy than I was expecting (I didnt research it very well). Honestly i didnt really hold my attention and the story is a bit of a mess in the middle in terms of going back and forth between different timelines and all the different characters who look and act very similar.
If you are considering reading this DO NOT get these smaller paper back "DC Compact" editions. It seems like unless you crack the binding its very difficult to read closer to the spine as there is not enough of a border. And from another review I have read it seems like if you try that the binding will fall apart.
If the consensus is it gets better I may continue but we will see.

This was a fun read! I’d read the first arc before, but not anything past that, and really enjoyed the continuation of the story. In its entirety, I’d say this volume creates a really strong mythos and new world. The plot of a new race of vampires for America is interesting and there’s a lot of strong characters here. I like that the main two aren’t just straightforward heroes but ultimately good people.
This series does well to set itself up for further potential (which we now know it ultimately capitalized on as it ran for a number of years). I hope they don’t delay in publishing the rest of the compact volumes too long, as I’d enjoy reading them all in this format.

American Vampire: Book One of the compact comics series was a great read in my personal opinion. The betrayal and suspense were great, a collection of volumes that really keeps you on your toes or in my case, the edge of my couch. I don’t know what to think of Skinner Sweet as of now, I loved him in the beginning and he didn’t seem too evil but I guess a decade can change a lot of things. I personally love Pearl and how despite what she was forced into becoming, she still led a decently positive life with Henry and I truly hope to see more of them together in future issues.
I couldn’t find the Compact Comic edition of this on Fable so I’ll be leaving this review here.
