Haruka Sakura never had a close friend, let alone several. As he grapples with his fear of rejection, he turns to Kaji, the class leader of the second years, for some much-needed advice. Following an impromptu party involving Sakura's favorite omelette rice, he meets Tsubakino, one of the Four Kings. Fascinated by the upperclassman's outspoken and confident personality, what will Sakura discover about himself while learning about Tsubakino's past?

sakura - the most precious bean ever. i love him sm, i wanna protect him.
tsubaki !!!!! oh, the gentle soul that you are. (the crush on umemiya is so real, same !!!) i'm so happy the mangaka is focusin on gender roles/liking things that don't align with what you're 'supposed to like' and acceptance in every way by the older couple, sakura, umemiya...i feel happy and safe with this manga.
This volume is my favourite of the series so far. I loved seeing the caring side of the Bofurin guys, looking after someone in their community rather than fighting for them.
This volume was so beautiful, in so many different ways 😭😭😭
"Right now you're the only one who thinks everyone's rejecting you and you're getting scared for no reason."
Sakura continues to be my favorite and hopefully one day he'll love himself fully. I desperately want to know more about his past, like what happened with his parents, did they treat him horribly because of the way he looks?
Awww, you can really see the influence of the senpais to their kouhais. Also, I didn't expect Kaji to give multiple examples of analogy to Sakura so he could understand his feelings. I love kaji is learning from the hiraki senpai and now kaji is teaching the same thing to sakura.. then later sakura to his kohai.
I want Sakura to cry so bad. I've been crying since the first chapter and i can't wait for when he cries his heart out man it's gonna be beautiful. But i cried when i saw him laugh, i'm so happy for him too.
I love Tsubaki-san already he's is so cute.😩💕 And I love how the boys just accepts him for what he is. He's just a hopeless romantic at heart. There is nothing abnormal about liking things different from the rest. But with how one's environment works, it can deeply affect one's assumption. I am glad Tsubaki found the couple
My heart!!! the couple are so precious I can't stop crying!!! And Sakura He's blushing again. I can't believe he got flustered from seeing the old couple just literally standing together in front of a plant. SAKURA STOP BLUSHING!!! it's make me want to kidnap you
Suo is really so observant so smart and so understanding he makes me want to know more about him and i can't wait for his past i think it's going to make me cry. But Man this manga never fails to make me cry. When I started this manga after watching eps 1-2 of the anime, I never would've guessed it would tug my heart strings this badly. I signed up for cool fight scenes, but here I am bawling my eyes out. Author-sama, thank you so much for making such a masterpiece 😭❤️

"'Normal' is only define by what the majority think. It's an ambiguous lesson that's constant changing, like who can wear high heels and the reason for makeup. Which is exactly why you don't need to feel bad about enjoying the things you like."
Loved this volume. So progressive, and great to see life lessons like this from a shōnen manga.
I loved this one! Tsubaki's back story is so lovely. I have a lot of thoughts about identity and how it's presented and translated but that's a discussion for elsewhere not a good reads review. Also the writing got good again (:
experiencing cute aggression whenever i see sakura, he's *clenching fist, gritting teeth* ADORABLE, way too adorable. he's my son now, i birthed him, i even still remember the labor pain. he's part of me.
This volume is all about the boys just spending time with each other and getting to know each other better, and it was lovely 🥹
First, we have Sakura who is trying to learn to lean on others for support. He’s previously only relied on himself because everyone around him reinforced the idea that the only person he could trust was himself. However, at Furin, the boys are insisting that he can trust them. He doesn’t have to do everything alone. Not only that, they’re showing him that it feels good to let other people shoulder responsibilities with you. People may not always love every part of you, but it doesn’t mean they want to abandon you. It was so sweet! I just want my baby boy to be supported 🥺
The rest of the volume is mostly dedicated to Tsubaki’s backstory and how he’s trying to help Ito. Tsubaki’s story makes me so emotional 😩 It’s what originally got me into the anime! I saw the scene where he’s watching Yui put on her makeup, and he’s fascinated by the lipstick. He goes to put it on and starts crying when he’s caught because he’s scared of rejection from society for liking things that are not traditionally masculine. Yui and Ito are the first people to truly accept him for who he is and encourage his interests. Their support of him at such a young age is why it means so much to Tsubaki to support Ito now that his wife has passed.
Of course I’m going to be immediate mush for a storyline with a gender nonconforming kid finding acceptance! 😭 It’s amazing to see in general how Sakura and the other Furin boys also just accept Tsubaki. They don’t give him any grief over how he expresses himself. The only lighthearted teasing is about Tsubaki’s clear crush on Umemiya! Which, frankly, if this shit doesn’t end canon I’m going to suffer 😩 In this type of manga I would generally not hold any hope at all of there being canonic queerness…but they LITERALLY talk about Tsubaki’s crush on Ume, he is so obvious about his interest too 😭 Ume also doesn’t seem entirely unaware of it and uninterested…but it’s the only part of the storyline I’m scared to hold any hope for. It’s what I REALLY want to happen though. Like, I’m fine if Sakura ends up with a girl (*cough cough* Kotoha), but what I really want and need is for the mangaka to stick to a queer as fuck story arc for Tsubaki. I’m begging 🧎🏻♀️➡️
Anyways. I will continue on my journey reading with this series ✨
P.S. My baby Sakura laughs for the first time in this volume, and I was as shook as the boys 😭 His smile is so precious! I adore my son! I want to give him a big hug 💖
ch 59 kaji telling sakura how it is mmhmm repeat i have never seen a shounen talk about the mc's feelings so much but tbf my sample size is pretty small not kaji punching umemiya, he's v quickly growing into a fave hiragi helping kaji out who helps sakura out... this is the opposite of generational trauma it's generational healing
ch 60 ah so this is where that tightrope imagery comes from. i gotta say all of nii's metaphors hit soooo good. he fell and they caught him.. wow
ch 61 HOLD THE PHONE HE SMILED AND LAUGHED never knew before going in how wholesome this would be even the villains of arc 1 pulled a port mafia and function as helpful backup (not touching endochika since idk where they'll show up later)
ch 62 sugishita once again being unintentionally funny just standing there hunched over ladies and gents this is the moment you've been waiting for... tsubaki intro! had no idea tsubaki was canonly in love with umemiya (that's how you know umemiya was supposed to be the mc bc EVERYONE is in love with him lol) but incredible from nii
ch 63 sakura blush counter a billion not only do these kids protect the town they're also community service workers like they rly do everything huh i NEED to see tsubaki and kotoha go shopping together
ch 64 why have gender roles when you can have sushi rolls?? this is actually so sweet that the old couple helped tsubaki out omg
ch 65 "you don't like it because you're a boy, you like it because you're you" INCREDIBLE
ch 66 sakura unintentionally helping out the old man and letting the whole world know tsubaki has a crush on umemiya omg and suo picking up after him and reassuring him how much his wife loved him
“I don’t know anything…about your past…but I understand why you feel the way you do. That’s why I’m telling you this. You need to…trust them based on what you can see.”
In this volume, Sakura continues to try to understand his feelings after the KEEL raid fiasco. His talk with Kaji sheds some light on what he must do and how he now sees the other Furin members. No sooner does he talk to his friends, though, than one of the Four Kings takes a great interest in him. Maybe helping Tsubakino with his errand will help Sakura truly grasp his new relationships in Furin?
First and foremost, I love Tsubaki. His addition to the story feels both natural and fresh. This series has no problem with characters showing their affection for each other, and Tsubaki fully encapsulates that. It was also nice to see him as a foil for Sakura - and also as his potential. It’s not subtle that Tsubaki’s struggles to accept himself and let others see him for who he is mirrors Sakura’s current concerns. But if Sakura is able to reach that place more fully, he can be just as kind and loved as Tsubaki.
But before that, I’m always so touched to see Sakura make progress in learning to love himself and others. I’m glad he had that talk with Kaji. The metaphor of him jumping from the tightrope onto the grassy field was so beautiful. Sakura is taking little steps, but even a little distance feels like a mile. I love Sakura so much.
I was a little bored last time there was a post-arc reflection period, but this one has been much more interesting.
