So so sweet! My kids enjoyed this but not as much as I did! Lol! While anyone can read it and get the gist of the story, I think this book is more meaningful to anyone who grew up watching Reading Rainbow. As we progress through the story, little Ezra appears alongside LeVar in vignettes of stories read on Reading Rainbow. As someone who watched, it was more engaging to see it and know what story they were in. My kids didn’t have the same experience reading this book because they didn’t know the context. While still a fun read for them, I believe this will hold a special place in the hearts of those who know more than anyone else.
Props on the illustrations, too, as they giving a spot-on ‘90s feel! They managed to capture nostalgia in a way that didn’t feel dated, somehow.
I also always love and appreciate added info at the back of the book, including the story’s inspiration, a list of books and episodes referenced and a small bio for LeVar Burton.

My Friend LeVar recounts the author's childhood fondness for LeVar Burton and his TV program The Reading Rainbow. This charming picture book culminates with the story of the author's unexpected meeting with Burton, running into him at a drugstore while out running errands with his mother. The book has lovely illustrations, with the story focusing on how Reading Rainbow fostered a love of reading and curiosity in its young viewers. This book will be nostalgic for grown-ups who grew up with Reading Rainbow who want to share their love of this program and reading with the kids in their lives, appealing to grown-ups and kids alike.

What a lovely book! This is the story of one little boy who loved the television show, Reading Rainbow on PBS, starring LeVar Burton, and the impact the show and the books featured on his life. It also includes a very cool story about the boy, who happened to be in a store with his mom and ran into his TV idol. His mom took a picture of him and LeVar, which he has cherished to this day. At the end of the book, the author shares the actual picture of him and Burton and the story of the genesis of the book. There’s also a list of children’s books referenced in the text. The illustrations are done well, too. My only complaint is that there is one word, galimoto, that I had no clue what it meant, and I don’t know if kids would just skip over that word or try to look it up.

Oh, what wonderful memories I have of “The Reading Rainbow” growing up! LeVar Burton played a pivotal role in the show and ultimately inspired my love for reading. This heartwarming book brings back those delightful memories. LeVar Burton, the magical host, sparked a lifelong love for reading in many, including the boy in this story. The boy's life was positively impacted by the show, and a sweet moment in the book is when he unexpectedly meets Burton in a store, with his mom capturing a cherished photo. The book concludes with the author sharing this special photo and the story behind the book's creation. It also includes a list of children's books mentioned in the text and beautifully done illustrations.

A true, great story about a child’s chance meeting with their hero who just happens to feel like a friend thanks to the wonder of books. I had so much nostalgia reading this book as “Reading Rainbow” was so impactful in my reading life as a child and adolescent, but also in my becoming a literacy advocate as an adult. I read as much as I do today because of Levar Burton and his work. I loved this book very much. It captured the spirit and message of the show beautifully in the text and the illustrations. This is one I will read again and again for sure! 💜

This is an adorable book about a little boy who loves Reading Rainbow and Levar Burton, then runs into Levar in real life. It's a very sweet story, with the real story from the author's life at the end. As an adult raised on Reading Rainbow, I loved it. My son, who knows Levar Burton from Star Trek, also loved it. I had to turn on an episode of Reading Rainbow (on Prime Video) when we finished it, and it was so fun for both of us and nostalgic for me.

He’s my friend too!
What an excellent picture book that evokes memories of a childhood that encouraged us to “take a look, it’s in a book”. Libraries were special place in my heart as a child and are a vital resource now to our communities.

This nonfiction picture book tells the author's story of loving Reading Rainbow as a child and getting to meet the host. His mom happened to have her camera with her, even though this was in the days of film, and she took a picture of her child with LeVar Burton. The picture appears at the end of this book.
The story may be slightly confusing for some children, since it presents the author's adventures with the host in an imaginative style, as if they were physically together to read books and do crafts. This represents the kind of connection that children can feel with a favorite television host, but a kid who doesn't have a solid grasp on the history of the Reading Rainbow TV show may not fully understand what's really happening in the story.
This book is a nice ode to reading, and to the power that children's television hosts can have in a child's life. This will especially appeal to adults who also grew up watching Reading Rainbow, especially if they want to share their nostalgia and memories with their own children.

Levar has been a huge part of my life growing up and is still today. I am so excited to share everything I can from Reading Rainbow to my kids. It sparked my love for reading at a very young age. So I was beyond excited, and honored really, to be able to read the ebook ARC of this book. We can’t wait to add it to our home collection. In this wonderful story we get to follow Ezra who loves his friend from TV, Levar, and the many books he has to share with everyone. He tells us all about the many reasons why he loves reading and learning with Levar. One day he gets to meet him in person and soon learns that his others friends love Levar too. The author does an outstanding job telling us his wonderful story.
I love this special tribute to a person who has been a positive influence to so many people for so many years. He has sparked a passion for reading in so many young children. The lasting and positive impact he made is felt in this heartfelt story. Enjoy this with your little readers and future readers. It is a perfect addition to my home collection of books, many I learned from Levar. Well written and a great addition to any book lovers collection.

My Take:
Rounding up to 4 stars, this book is a valuable addition to any library, personal or public, for young readers. My concern is whether young children will recognize Mr. Burton and understand why this story resonates so deeply with adults who grew up with him introducing them to books. Overall, the subject matter was compelling enough for me to select this book and consider finding episodes of Reading Rainbow for the young readers I know.

Biographical AND autobiographical! Told from the viewpoint of a child, Ezra tells us about his adventures with LeVar Burton. Now, Ezra is seeing LeVar on TV, but we really feel how much connection was forged through Reading Rainbow, as LeVar spoke to the children, and not to the camera.
While LeVar teaches Ezra about many cultures, there’s particular attention given to Ezra and LeVar’s roots…or, Roots, I’ll say. Ezra is introduced to LeVar by his parents, who know him from the series Roots. There’s also mention of ancestors escaping to freedom. I love how this book subtly points out how important it is for children to see themselves in media.
And it’s also important to make those media personalities real, and young Ezra had the good luck to actually meet LeVar, randomly, at the grocery store. The art portrays him as a towering figure…for one page. And then LeVar is kneeling with Ezra, and it’s just a lovely moment.
This book makes me really want a continuation of Reading Rainbow. It feels like such a missed opportunity.
Advanced reader copy provided by the publisher.

Thank you to Charlesbridge for the eGalley to review!
My Friend LeVar is a love letter to LeVar Burton, Reading Rainbow, and to imagination, based on Ezra Edmond's experience with Reading Rainbow and meeting LeVar Burton in real life one day. It's a very sweet picture book memoir that shares the joys of reading and using your imagination and creativity. It also shows how representation is important, specifically for Black children needing to see themselves in Black characters and TV hosts.
Despite being dated as an experience from the 1990s, the end of the book mentions that Reading Rainbow is still available to watch and where to watch it; there is also a bibliography of all the books referenced in this book and their corresponding Reading Rainbow episode. I think this would make an excellent introduction to the series for today's children so they can get the magical experience of Reading Rainbow for themselves!

I'm forever a Reading Rainbow kid and a Star Trek adult, so LeVar has always been around. I was so excited to see this book, and I'm happy he's getting the flowers he rightfully deserves! ♥
My Friend LeVar is a wonderful tribute to the man and his impact on generations of bookish kids. With beautiful illustrations, it recounts the true story of the author's love of (and eventual accidental encounter with!) LeVar. It's a perfect tribute.
I also love that the author compiled a list of referenced episodes at the end. Very helpful for those who want to go back and reminisce, as well as for those who are hopefully introducing Reading Rainbow to a new generation of kiddos. 🌈
(Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review.)

You never outgrow your love for Reading Rainbow. Trekkies fondly remember him from Next Generation, and who can forget him in Roots. But the child in the story knows that LeVar is his personal friend who encourages, goes on adventures, and teaches so many things! "LeVar inspires me to be creative and use my imagination"
The illustrations by Jenna Nahyun Chung are simple, imaginative, colorful, and fun.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to everyone, but especially to a school, hospital, or your local public library!

Like many of us, young Ezra Edmond was inspired by the beloved PBS show Reading Rainbow (1983-2006), hosted by LeVar Burton. Through this sweet picture book, Ezra shares how Reading Rainbow instilled in him a love of reading, and the real-life moment he met LeVar in person. They take a photo together, and when he brings that picture to school, he learns that his classmates also know LeVar from TV.
This book is perfect for everyone, including the adults who grew up watching Reading Rainbow, and is especially great for a family readaloud/storytime. In the 20+ years that Reading Rainbow aired, LeVar Burton inspired a generation of children who grew up to love books. This story brings his legacy to the next generation of young readers.

A huge thank you to #NetGalley and #Charlesbridge for an advanced readers copy of #MyFriendLevar.
This story was everything I needed and more and I cannot wait to incorporate it into my classroom. As a teacher I am always looking for stories my children will love and enjoy. What made this story so special to me was the message that when you meet someone you idolize as a child no matter how many years passed when you look back meeting someone you idolize can make an impact on any child. I absolutely loved the images and the representation within the story.
Congratulations Ezra Edmond on a job well done.

My Friend LeVar by Ezra Edmond is an awesome book that showcases one story of how LeVar Burton has impacted people's lives through Reading Rainbow. As a youngster, the Author. Ezra Edmond had an encounter with a man he looks up to--LeVar Burton, host of his favorite show Reading Rainbow. Being a fan of Levar Burton for numerous reasons, including Reading Rainbow, reading My Friend LeVar was a pure joy from beginning to end! I highly recommend My Friend LeVar by Ezra Edmond! It's a perfect book for any setting! Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book. My review is on Goodreads.

This picture book is the author reminiscing about the Reading Rainbow television show that he loved and how he happened to meet Mr. Burton at a store when he was young. I love the connections from the show to the local library and how all of his class had the same reactions to that wonderful award winning show.
I am not sure how my students will react to his book as they won't know LeVar Burton from any of his roles. I love the heart of this story, just am not sure it will find an audience in my collections. LeVar Burton is a hero to my generation, for sure. I am grateful for the joy seeing this title at my library gave to me.

My Friend LeVar gave me all the feels as I recall my childhood watching Reading Rainbow. I always felt like LeVar was a friend. I dreamed about being a kid recommending books on the show. Now, as an elementary school librarian, I show some of the old episodes on the streaming platform our school has. I cannot wait to purchase this book to share with my students. I love the way this story incorporates the books and activities from the show. I also love how it is based on Ezra's meeting LeVar. It beautifully conveys how books take you on adventures.

This 90's baby's heart is in love! I think most people from my generation can remember the excitement of Reading Rainbow day and the joy that accompanied the giant box TV being wheeled into the classroom. What a wonderful tribute to LeVar Burton and Reading Rainbow!
While I did greatly enjoy this story, I don't know that it will make much sense to present-day students who are not familiar with Reading Rainbow. I'd say it is more for their grown-ups to enjoy.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to read this book! I grinned the entire time while reading this story and reminiscing about how much Levar Burton affected me too as a child. I am so thankful that the author decided to share their wonderful story of Levar Burton and how he helped foster their love for learning and reading. My Friend Levar is a fantastic way to share how special of a person Levar Burton is and his great love for reading to a new generation. I hope to see this book in every library and absolutely can't wait to see more books from this author.

This is a cute picture book about the author's memories of watching Reading Rainbow and LeVar Burton. It may be a little confusing for kids because Reading Rainbow is not actually named in the story itself, perhaps due to licensing restrictions. I loved seeing the photo of the author and LeVar Burton at the end of the book. He also includes the list of books he references within the story. Recommended for adults and parents who enjoyed Reading Rainbow and want to share that experience with their child.

I really liked the idea behind this book and it was really well put together.
The book is well written and it is easy to follow and I loved the ending.
It is great that the book was inspired by the author's meeting in real life too - it is a great tribute to that story and what a way to share the memory.
The illustrations were really good and they brought the book to life.
It is 5 stars from me for this one - very highly recommended!

I was expecting a biography of LeVar Burton, but Edmond's book turns out to be more an ode to Reading Rainbow. This may be one that adults enjoy more than children. I don't know if the reruns of this groundbreaking show are still being aired, so kids may need to have the premise explained to them. Perhaps it can lead to a discussion of heroes and celebrities, and what it would be like to meet our idols.

My Friend LeVar is a sweet book about a reading hero that a lot of us grew up watching. Reading Rainbow had a pivotal role in a lot of kids loving to read. This book is an homage to that. The author actually met LeVar when he was a kid and this book nicely illustrates that plus what the show meant to him. I would recommend this book for anyone who loves Reading Rainbow.

Every 90s kid probably remembers Reading Rainbow. Well, this book is a great tribute to LeVar Burton and the magic of learning from that delightful PBS show. It's not a biography of Burton and that's okay. It's a love letter to books, something I like even more

The synopsis appealed to me and the book didn't disappoint. It recounts the author's love of the show, Reading Rainbow and it highlights his love of books and reading. What made this even more special was that he met LeVar Burton when he was a kid and included the actual photo he took with him at the end of the book. The illustrations show diversity and I think would appeal to kids. Cute read!

This is a great story of how watching Levar gave a young boy a friend in an adult who while not there in person still shared moments in growing, laughing, learning, etc.
Some children had Mister Rogers. Some had Levar. Some had both!
