Need Your Midnights

Rate this book
Blake Stuntz, pro hockey player, has been having the time of his life being single. So when he announces at dinner with friends he is ready to settle down, it rocks Lucy’s world, his best friend he misses like crazy who has given him the cold shoulder for years.

Lucy Campbell, ER nurse, had her heart broken by her best friend Blake, when they drunkenly hooked up and he went on like it never happened. After he drops that news at dinner, she impulsively jumps into a relationship to prove a point. How long can Lucy pretend with Wyatt before her feelings for Blake shine through?

When their friend group takes a trip together Blake tells Lucy “I am sorry for being an idiot and treating you like you weren’t… aren’t one of the most important people in my life.”

After the trip, at the weekly family dinner, tension rises as Wyatt pieces together who Lucy has lingering feelings for, and that he is sitting right at the table with them.

Will these two ever find a way back to each other? Or does the bad blood run too deep?

I went back and forth on if I wanted to post my review for this book.
However. When I realized the PR group told the ARC team they cannot post 3 or less stars or DNF reviews until 3 weeks after release date or else they wouldn’t be considered for future tours, I felt like I should be honest as the reviews so far are heavily weighted in favor of the ARC team reviews.
Now, waiting to post less than 3 star reviews is not uncommon when reviewing an ARC. But that’s usually a couple days. Not 3 weeks. And not with a threat to not work with them anymore.

This book has a lot going on.
Examples:
-run on paragraphs
-proofreading and editing mistakes that should have been caught early on
-mains that apparently like each other but never spend time together or even think about each other
-word vomit dialogue that had zero pacing and jumped around

I really felt like the author either didn’t have the guidance they needed or the right group of people backing them. It was very sloppy, choppy, and surface level. The vibe was giving this is a first draft.
And just because you toss in Taylor Swift references or say the MMC is a hockey player does not make it a good story.
This book deserved another pass or two from someone outside of what I believe to be the authors friends.

I know I’ll probably get some backlash on this and I’m sure there will be people that do thoroughly enjoy this book. Everyone has their own opinions and that’s wonderful. So this is mine and I feel like 2024 needs to be the year of honest reviews.

✨️ARC REVIEW✨️

I am so sorry but I honestly don't know what I just read.

I can understand if there wasn't an editor BUT THERE WAS. There was no reason for there to be that many grammatical errors, lack of punctuations, run on sentences, and dialogue that made no sense. I couldn't tell you where they were half the time or what emotions were going to come out of any of them.

I can't lie and say that the storyline concept is bad because it obviously drew me in to want to sign up for it. I can honestly say when I first started reading it, I looked past the errors and the cheesiness and said, "I am going to give this a try no matter what". I thought it would grow on me and get better but 10% in and I was STRUGGLING.

I NEVER DNF a book and never had I want to more. I AM SO SORRY BUT I WILL NEVER LIE ON A REVIEW about MY feelings.

I couldn't stand any of the dialogue; it felt super juvenile. It was either all dramatic or complete silence. All or nothing. The setting jumped all over the place the whole time. I honestly couldn't stand the characters, either. Their personalities were inconsistent.

Lucy is dating Wyatt, a guy who is basically perfect and supportive and caring and has shown ZERO signs of getting out of line with his words. He finds out she USED to love this guy and FLIPS OUT??? And then Blake asks to see her outside after she kisses her BOYFRIEND and loses it on HER?? HUH?!?!? It didn't fit whatsoever. The friends/family got WAY too involved and chimed in every five seconds. It felt very fanfic, in that sense. Too overly dramatic, if you will. It didn't feel like they were caring, it felt like they had no boundaries.

There were too many characters and I couldn't keep up with who was who and who was into who and who was related to who. Characters were coming out of the woodwork almost every other chapter.

I genuinely couldn't stand Lucy or Blake. Nothing about them was cute and I hated him calling her Princess. The whole wish at midnight thing was too corny for me to get into. It also just didn't make sense. The spice wasn't written well.

I feel like things would feel normal and then BAM throw in something dramatic to make it more interesting. Luke's minding his own business and the BAM someone shows up at his door with ~something~ and then BAM some random character and him are a thing??? Make it make sense.

I am shiting on this and I know I am. But I just don't understand how a book can be published and not be thoroughly edited. Don't get me wrong, I've seen well known books has a few errors but I'm talking like they forgot the " or didn't capitalize a word. Here: The plot needed to be edited. The characters needed to be edited. The language and tone. The DIALOGUE. This felt like a high school drama paper.

If you loved this, then I am happy for you. This was too poorly written for me to get through and if I didn't have this thing where I don't DNF, I would have.

Thank you to Sunny Babe PR for this ARC.

Nurse X hockey player sports romance. I am a sucker for a sports romance yall!

Lucy and Blake were college best friends. Lucy has always had a thing for Blake but he was too oblivious to realize it. These two find themselves with a second chance to find their best midnight yet.

This was a cute story and enjoyable. I did think the story started off slow with the two MCs and felt as if a slow burn romance was happening. However the story started developing too fast and felt rushed. This book features plenty of spice with most in the second half of the story.

This is a dual POV romance with lovable characters. The story features a close knit family/friend group that support each other and give such good feels.

The book also features lots of Taylor Swift references in case you are a swiftie.

The ending leaves on a cliff hanger with Lucy’s brother Luke. Therefore, alluding to the next series book focusing on that bomb drop.

Need Your Midnights can be read as a stand alone within a series.

ARC Review

I actually enjoyed this book. It was sweet, cute, and spicy. I will say I'm not a suckered for the miscommunication Trope, so that was very blah for me. But it was resolved pretty quick in the read, so I don't mind it, I guess. I loved Blake he is everyone's favorite kind of guy 💕 and Lucy is a strong, independent woman who just has a huge heart, especially for Blake. I love found family, and I will 100% be reading the rest of this series as it comes out.

A quick read perfect for sports romance lovers, especially hockey! This one relies on the miscommunication trope as its basis— there is a misunderstanding between Lucy and Blake on their night spent together. There is the added fact that Blake did not realize his feelings for Lucy like a big dumb dumb and then it all hit him at once. Meanwhile, Lucy is trying to get over him. Once the two figure it out though, it gets really smutty. Also swifties, you’ll love the Taylor Swift references in this one!

Thank you Sunny Babe PR for the arc!

I loved Blake and Lucy. Their friendship starts developing in the first book so I love how it just jumps right in and dives into the back story of what happened. But don’t worry they will fix things.
I love that she shines light on how ADHD affects little things too.

3.5☆ rounded up. 🥰
Thanks sunnybabepr & Mariah Goodwin for the arc.
I enjoyed this cute, second chance hockey romance.
A friendship that started off great, led to a night that changed everything. Lucy wasn't happy with the result of it. Blake was literally clueless as to what went wrong and misses his best friend.
I loved these two together. Blake honestly was the sweetest to Lucy and very protective too.
I also enjoyed the group of friends within the story. They were fun. And their whole hockey routine they have for the home games. I just absolutely loved. So cute. You could tell the friends were more like family together.
The ending though ! It doesn't leave you in a cliffhanger with Lucy and Blake but it does leave one for the next interconnected standalone story of Luke who's Lucy's brother.
.
Overall enjoyed it, the drama, the spice, super sweet. 😊

“Right now I want to fuck my woman, as she wears my name, looking over my city.”

Tropes:
-1989/Midnight Vibes
-hockey player x nurse
-found family
-second chance
-miscommunication
-friends to enemies to lovers
-brother’s best friend
-HE crawls to her 😌

This hockey romance was the perfect quick comfy read to kick off 2024!

You quickly fall in love with the “family” these hockey players and their friends form. Their Sunday dinners and honesty with each other was very refreshing. It’s a friend group that’s quickly becoming coupled up but support each other exactly as a family. I love that they call out our main characters on some of the bad decisions they make throughout this book.

Being a nurse I enjoyed getting to know Lucy’s character. She is an ER nurse and I enjoyed seeing her set her boundaries with her friends and family on her needs after a rough shift. I am a sucker for a FMC who loves music, is a hot mess, and loves to read books in their spare time. I felt that Lucy was very relatable and loved seeing her growth.

Honestly, Blake was such an ass at the start of this book. However I think this allowed for his growth throughout the book. We see him forced to deal with things he was ignoring for lots of his and Lucy’s relationship. Once this man got put straight he groveled his heart out 😌 this man treats Lucy like the princess she is. I absolutely adored how he showed his love for her. With his target shopping sprees and thoughtfulness for her and her coworkers I WAS SWOONING.

Something that made this not a five star read for me was the plot. I do feel as though it jumped around a bit. I would’ve liked to see some aspects of their relationship described a bit more rather than jumping through milestones of their relationship.

Need Your Midnights is book two in the Tampa Thunder Series but can be read as a standalone.

Thank you, Mariah Goodwin and Sunny Babe PR, for the opportunity to read this arc; all opinions are my own.

A cute, lighthearted, & spicy read that is low on drama but full of Taylor swift references. This book is on the shorter side (~300 pages) so I flew through it quite quickly.

One thing I really liked about this book is that you got to see BOTH of the characters perspectives on the wedding night when their friendship basically went to shit. By having 2 POV’s of the same moment, you get to see why Blake & Lucy felt the way that they did it, & it shows that the blame for their fall out can’t really be put on just one of them because they both understood the significance of that moment quite differently. This book was also surprisingly so spicy! I was shocked lol😭

I feel like the story started off SO slow & it took me quite a while to get into the story, but then all of a sudden the pacing changed & the story felt super rushed & fast. My other issue is that there was just so much unnecessary filler content. For example, in almost every scene we’re told what Lucy is wearing, and it really took me out of the story because it got boring & repetitive after a while & I found myself skimming these scenes. I wish this sort of filler information was taken out and instead replaced with more relationship building scenes between Lucy & Blake because I feel like we didn’t really get to see much relationship development happen, & there was also a lot of telling rather than showing, in terms of their relationship. I also wasn’t a big fan of the writing style. I can’t explain exactly what the issue here was but it just wasn’t for me, sadly🫤

Thank you Sunny Babe PR for sending me an advanced copy of Need Your Midnights

Need Your Midnights is the second book in the standalone Tampa Thunder series. While you don’t need to read the first book, you will know more about the characters and their dynamics a bit better if you start with Need Your Number.

This is a quick, fluffy, sports romance with a lot of popular tropes so I think there’s something in there for everyone. I loved the big friend group and the found family dynamic.

While I’m not a hardcore swiftie, I could tell there were a alot of Taylor easter eggs throughout the book. I’m not a huge fan of real life pop culture references in fiction, so I got tired of it quickly. But if you like pop culture references, this book will be right up your alley!

I wish there was more on page relationship building. The book is over 250 pages and I feel like most of the relationship building and conflict resolution happened off page. Also the lead up to the third book in the series seemed so forced.

I think this book has a lot of potential. The story is very cute and written for the swifties and hockey lovers!

My first ever ARC read you guys !!!! 😍

I'm a sucker for a hockey romance so when Sunny Babe PR gave me this opportunity I jumped on it.

This book was so cute!! I love a friends to lovers trope and 'he falls harder'. I'm not usually a fan of miscommunication but they worked their sh*t out maturally early on. Blake was a clueless idiot at the beginning but showed a lot of growth as the book progressed.

He was so thoughtful (he delivers coffee for Lucy and her colleagues, stocks up his place with all her favorite cozy things and supports her book and t.swift obsession) 💖

I rated it 4 stars 🌟
It was a feel-good, quick and cute read and the set-up for the next book makes me excited to read the rest of the series 🩷

This feel good hockey romance stole my heart! I just love a book that can keep me smiling, tear up, and then BOOM leave me speechless. I cannot tell you how many times I reread the ending because of how Mariah completely blindsided me. I absolutely love Lucy and how she stood her ground with Blake after he messed up the first time. Blake definitely gave us golden retriever, groveling, and do anything for her back vibes. Them together was simply perfect, and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate not having a third act break up!
If you are looking for a quick, fun, and feel good read then I definitely suggest you dive into the Tampa Thunder Series!

Super cute second chance romance read! It was also a super quick read as well and oh my spicyyyyy. I am not gonna lie I didn’t like Blake very much at first but he grew up and got his head out of his butt by the end of the book. I really liked Lucy a lot. I feel like I related a lot with her because of her nursing excursions! Blake and Lucy’s love is nothing short of perfect and I love that they had such an amazing friend group to support them as well.

Honestly, the spice was good but the story line started off as too long and then developed as too quick!

Really hard for me to get into, I didn’t want to DNF but was sooo tempted too!

Writing style was impeccable (so I can’t fault that!!)

Would recommend if you like hockey romances and nurses. Has a cutesy edge to it!

Blake and Lucy were friends in college, and after a miscommunication and years without communication, they get a second chance to make things right. They are headed on a vacation with a bunch of their friends and there is where they get more time to hash things out!
I really enjoyed this book! The chemistry between Lucy and Blake is undeniable! I love their friend group! They were constantly calling them both out on their crap! The only thing I didn’t like was the miscommunication in the beginning. That is one of my least favorite tropes! Thankfully it doesn’t last long! Other than that I enjoyed the book and I highly recommend it!

Blake and Lucy, what to say? Their relationship wasn’t my favorite but I love hockey romances so I feel like I have to rate this book high. However, I feel like this boom just needed a bit more time to develop before it got released. Lucy Campbell, ER nurse, and Blake Stuntz, pro hockey player, were once best friends until one night changed their relationship forever. Unfortunately for Blake he doesn’t realize how he messed things up. Two years later at the weekly family dinner, Blake drops the news that he is looking to settle down, completely blindsiding Lucy. So she jumps headfirst into a relationship with Wyatt to try to move on from her heart break. Four months later, when their friend group all takes a trip together everything between Lucy and Blake reaches the breaking point. Will they return to being just friends or will it develop into something more?

Lucy and Blake are beyond perfect together. I will admit at the beginning I was fully on Lucy’s side and definitely would not have given Blake the time of day. But once that man started groveling and putting in the work to show her how much he cared for her, I was a goner. I loved all the little details he paid attention to like her doom piles, her need for cozy blankets, and her favorite coffee place. Not only was Blake so thoughtful when it comes to Lucy but he also thought of her co-workers and brought them coffee and even hired catering for the ER department for Thanksgiving. Watching their whole relationship come to fruition was absolutely wonderful.

The story does start off at a slower pace as we learn the whole story and how history brought them to where they ended up. The story quickly picks up pace and progresses over many months. This allowed us to see Blake and Lucy moving forward in their relationship and healing things between them, allowing us to see all their life events. The spice was spicing! I need to get a home library with a ladder asap! And as an original swiftie I loved all of the easter eggs.

I also loved the dynamics of the friend group! They are so close and tight knit, and getting to know them and watch their stories play out at the same time was a wonderful touch. I like how they were there for each other for everything and were supporting each other even if it meant rushing over to one's house late in the evening to help with a crisis. And that ending! It doesn't leave you in a cliffhanger with Lucy and Blake but it does leave one for the next story of Luke who's Lucy's brother. There couldn’t have been a better set up to draw me in for book three!

Need Your Midnights is the second book in the standalone Tampa Thunder series. While you don’t need to read the first book, you will know more about the characters and their dynamics a bit better if you start with Need Your Number.

Lucy Campbell had her heart broken by her best friend, Blake, after a drunken hook up where Blake acted as though nothing ever happened. A couple years later and Blake drops the news that he is looking to settle down, completely blindsiding Lucy, leading her to jump into a relationship with another man to prove a point. When the friend group takes a trip together, long lost secrets start to come out, causing new tensions to arise.

I am always all in for a sports romance so this was an easy 'yes' to give when the opportunity arose! Make it a second chance romance and it's a no brainer.

NEED YOUR MIDNIGHTS is told in alternating dual POV. I loved both main characters, Lucy and Blake. I particularly enjoyed Lucy's character as I could relate to her being a nurse and enjoying a good read on her off time.

I enjoyed how Blake and Lucy's relationship comes to fruition and thought it was well done. There's definitely a lot of pent-up emotions that arise between the two and it was nice to see them resolve their past broken bridges, so to speak. Once Blake gets his act together, he is a swoon-worthy, caring, and kind partner.

I really liked the secondary characters that form the friend group and can't wait to learn more about them as the series progresses. I'll likely circle back to book 1, but am wholly excited for book 3 given the tidbits that were dropped about this character in this book!

My one qualm about this book in general was that the friend group needed a bit more introduction for me as I spent a long time being lost in regard to the context and relation of each friend that was introduced. (Example: I had no idea that Fiona was also a sister to Luke and Lucy, it took me quite some time to piece that together... maybe it was obvious to others or maybe I missed it *shrugs*). This would be particularly helpful to iron out if this book is truly meant to be able to be read as an interconnected standalone which is how it was advertised to me.

For all the Swifties out there, this book is loaded with references (at least I think there is... my Swiftie knowledge is negligible).

I would like to thank SunnyBabePR for the opportunity to read this novel in exchange for an honest review! All opinions shared are my own.

🩺ARC BOOK REVIEW🏒

I loved this book so much. It was utterly amazing to read. The writing just flowed so smoothly and had me hooked from the very first page. So glad I got the chance to ARC read this book and now I need to go backwards and read the 1st book in the series to be caught up with the other couples story while we wait for the 3rd book - very excited about that one and it was set up perfectly!

The story follows Blake Stuntz who is a professional hockey player(immediately love in my case) and Lucy Campbell who is an ER nurse and was previously best friends with Blake until he broke her heart one night. Wasn't happy with him in that scene, like it was just such a stupid move and was as if he didn't have his head screwed on properly and I would have done the same as Lucy and I commend her for what she did.

After fully ignoring Blake for quite some time they both end up on a family vacation which leads them to make up and be friends once again, only issue is that Lucy has a boyfriend, but that goes away pretty quickly after her boyfriend learns the truth behind Blake and Lucy's relationship. Once they are in the all-clear Blake and Lucy decide to give each other a shot and see how it works out.

In my eyes, they could not have been any more perfectly suited for one another. They always knew what the other person needed and how to make them smile. I loved watching their relationship progress into more than they ever expected. How much they cared for one another felt like nothing I had seen before. Also, the spice in this book was immaculate. It was so frequent, and I loved it, again perfect for one another.

I have a feeling that this couple will be playing around in my head for quite some time, and I am fully glad of that. One of the best hockey romances I feel I have read in awhile and I can't wait to see what this author does more in the future and I will be definitely reading all the books that come out in this series!

✨ARC REVIEW✨

Need your Midnights is book 2 in the Tampa Thunder series. This is my first book by Mariah Goodwin and this can be read as a standalone. This book follows Blake and Lucy, best friends who are struggling to find their way back to each other after a series of events that has them at odds. After a “drunken” hook up, Lucy is left heartbroken after Blake moves on as if nothing happened. Now years later, they are trying to understand where they both stand with each other and in their lives/relationships.

There are a few things I enjoyed about this book…. I liked the found family all characters find in each other. I like how they were there for each other for everything and were supporting each other even if it meant calling each other on their BS. I really enjoyed how the whole feel of the book is lighthearted and just heart-warmly sweet. The book is quickly moving forward on months of life events so it really is progressing when you see Blake and Lucy moving forward on their healing path.

The only thing that bums me out and why I couldnt really love this book, is that the best friends to lovers trope is really not my jam. I have tried to read many books with this trope and they just don’t make me swoon. I say this to add, that even when the trope is not my jam, I managed to read and finish this book and find enjoyment in it. I loved how Blake redeemed himself in a way that really makes you swoon for him. I like that Lucy is a nurse and that she actually describes a little bit how being a nurse is about and how difficult it can be. I liked that Lucy was a character with ADHD representation. I would have loved to see a little bit more of the struggles she faces due to her ADHD though, for someone that does not deal with it, I wanted to learn more about it through Lucy.

If you are looking for a comfort, heartwarming and light hearted book, then this will be something you will enjoy. I just love their family.

Thanks Mariah Goodwin and sunnybabepr for providing me an ARC of this book for an honest opinion.

Once best friends, Blake and Lucy haven’t spoken in several months. On a friends holiday, what begins as a truce, soon provides the opportunity to air old grievances, leading to old emotions resurfacing. As Blake is faced with the dilemma of committing to a relationship with Lucy or making peace with remaining friends, he enlists the opinions and support of their friends.

A light hockey romance, full of spice! 🙈
While this is the second book in a series, it works just as well as a stand-alone book and the author provides enough context that you can gather the backstory without needing to have read the first book.

Includes:
- Whirlwind romance
- Friends to enemies to lovers
- Taylor Swift references
- Bookish references
- Second chances
- More explicit content than I was able for 😂

Personally, I prefer a slow burn and more build up before reaching the outcome. For that reason I enjoyed the first half of this book the most (i.e. the “will they won’t they”). The second half will please readers that enjoy happy endings and whirlwind romance. I would have preferred a slightly more realistic portrayal in terms of moving the couple out of the honeymoon period, and at times I felt the physical element was emphasised at the expense of delving more into other aspects of their relationship. However, I appreciate that many romance readers may prefer the whirlwind, so it may be down to personal preference.

I loved the inclusion of the challenges of working in healthcare - the impact on the professional and real life challenges. Similarly, I enjoyed the ADHD representation and drawing attention to concepts audiences may be not be familiar with, such as body doubling.

I enjoyed the supporting characters’ stories. While the cliffhanger felt a bit out of context, I did feel myself intrigued to find out what happens next.

Wow this one really brought out all the emotions while still coming full circle in the end! Lucy and Blake were best friends during college, but one drunken night at their friend's wedding caused a huge miscommunication and put a strain on their relationship. Now years later, they're repairing their friendship and making up for time lost.

I'll admit that I haaate the miscommunication trope, so the beginning made me want to smack some sense into Lucy and Blake, but once they got their heads on straight it was full steam ahead!

I loooved Blake's pining! Oof, hockey boy can make things up to me any time! Feed me, caffeinate me, buy me books and call me a good girl? Freaking sold. However, he kind of sucked in the beginning of the book lol. I did think that this character development was set up well though, because while we got to see him grovel, we also got to see him mature into a fabulous book boyfriend!

I love the found family aspect that comes with sports romances, and this is no exception. Lucy is an ER nurse, and Blake is a professional hockey player, on the same team as Lucy's brother. The other siblings, teammates, cousins and coworkers are all part of this big family, all making time for each other with the varying busy schedules. I can't wait to continue this series and get to know all the side characters, the set up for the next book is soo good!

ARC Review
Release date - January 13

Thank you to @sunnybabepr and Mariah Goodwin for giving the chance to read and review this!
This arc read was such an amazing read to start the year with! I fell in love with book so quickly and EVERY single character in it! Especially Blake and Lucy obviously. I hated Blake for being a dumb dumb and not realizing what he had right in front of him but let me tell you he made up for it so quickly. I’m a sucker for she falls first but he falls harder and Blake really did fall harder. The way he knows everything about Lucy and how to deal with her ADHD made me fall in love with him so much more. He truly is the perfect man. I also don’t think I’ve ever read a book with so many time skips but I loved it so much, it made the book so much more exciting. The spicy scenes too, oh my lord 🫠 absolutely incredible but the way he always cared more about her pleasure than his was amazing and the after care, Blake could not be more perfect.
If you’re a swiftie you’ll definitely love this book. I’ve been a fan of her since forever but kinda stopped listening after her Speak Now album so it was so much fun listening to the songs that were mentioned in the book and seeing how it related to that certain part of the book. Their whole midnight truth thing was absolutely adorable. The little hints about future books made me so excited too, I can not wait for the next book in this series. Truly nothing could have made this story better.
