If you’re in the mood for a witty second-chance romance with magic and superheroes, I can happily recommend this sequel to Rites & Desires.
Two years after her affair with and breakup from Jaccob Stevens, AKA Stardust, Ruby Killingsworth is at the top of her business and magical games, and has a satisfying non-exclusive relationship. When a mysterious email with an attached recording apparently from the future threatens her business, she swallows her pride and asks her tech genius superhero ex-lover for help. Old feelings reawaken as they work together to catch the time traveler.
Ruby is so much fun to follow through a story. She’s rich and powerful, living a life of luxury and glamor unavailable to most of us. She’s amoral but ethical, taking lavishly good care of anyone working for her while also prioritizing to her own needs. She has strong opinions and doesn’t like feelings, yet she seems to have a heart under all the magic and high fashion. And Jaccob, the squarest of Good Guys, is funny, capable, and sweet. The team of young female capes was a lively addition to the cast. I liked that the time travel element did not (yet) involve the main characters time traveling. The answer to the mystery was startling and clever, no doubt setting up future adventures.
