Thank you to Jordan Lee for the ARC, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review!

5 ⭐️ 3 🌶️

I loved this MM fairytale retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I was curious about dark fantasy romance and this was the perfect introduction to the genre.

Cale is an outcast who is just getting by as a kitchen helper in the town of Tolburg after leaving his small village due to being shunned by the community. He decides to go home to visit his mother for Spring Tide and wanders into Ashwood forest looking for shelter from the rain. He finds himself transported to another realm after taking shelter in an abandoned building. He is stuck in Ashwood manor and must quickly adapt to life locked within the walls of the estate because beyond them terrifying monsters lurk.

Gil is the Lord of the Manor who works hard to provide for and protect the residents of the manor. He was cursed to this realm about 14 years ago and he is able to shift into a wolfman and he tries to keep the beast at bay and only shift in the woods away from the manor. Everyone knows how to break the curse but they are unable to speak about it as part of the curse. Gil finds it hard to trust others because his former lover attempted to kill him. The way to break the curse is that Gil must fall in love with someone who loves him back even in his beast form.

Cale and Gil’s relationship develops naturally with a few misunderstandings due to Gil’s trust issues. It was great seeing them grow together. I do wish we got more scenes set in the forest of the realm because it would have been nice to learn more about the monsters that lurked in the forest. The world building in the novel was good and I found it interesting how the curse would draw people in by offering enchanted food to trap people in the realm.

The book ends with a HFN and I’m excited to find out what’s next for the duology.

I received an arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
I will preface this by saying I don’t see 3⭐️s as a bad review!
So it’s a sexy mm retelling of beauty and the beast, and i requested the arc as it is advertised as a touch him and die, slow burn, steamy dark fantasy novel and it is all of those things! If you are into those things then you should definitely read it!

A couple of things just didn’t align for ME, it’s personal preference.

Content Warnings for book: Fantasy-typical violence, death

Kink: N/A

This book is a bit out of the norm of what I usually read: slow burn, historical fantasy vibes. Usually I’m reading instalovey paranormal or contemporary. However, I was given the chance to read this and my curiosity was piqued, so here we are.

In general, I think the book was enjoyable. I liked Cale and I liked the push and pull of their relationship. Sometimes I wanted to hit Gil with something to get his act together, but he has understandable trauma and reluctance because of his past. I enjoyed those touch of angst moments with the table and the woods, for example.

The sex scenes were, in my opinion, the weakest part of the book. Not that it was too much or too little, but I just didn’t enjoy how they were written. I think this book could be FTB or something like that and it would fit just fine. Not that I expect or desire the author to stop writing smut though, as one only gets better through practice.

Some of the side characters I liked, some I didn’t — but they’re multifaceted and flawed just like people are, reacting to their dire circumstances.

If you’re someone who likes slow burns and fantasy, you may enjoy this even more than I did! Give it a shot.

This is a darker take on the classic Beauty & the Beast tale.
Cale leaves for a short trip to visit his mother but on the way get caught in a storm. Seeking shelter, he stumbles onto a seemingly abandoned mansion, then while exploring he finds a bowl of pristine fruit. Not heeding his own knowledge of faerie foods and that you should never eat it, he of course eats and ends up transported through the Veil into the same home, but now alive and full of other people. They're all trapped by a curse - that we, the reader, never really get all the information on in this book.

Overall, I thought this was a really unique take on the story and loved that took a darker turn. There were some bits that needed a bit more explanation and others that were a little repetitive but, overall, I really enjoyed this and I'm excited to find out where Lee takes the story in part 2.

This is an MxM Beauty and the Beast retelling that features a very beastless Beast. The story is quick to read due to some really simple and lackluster prose which wouldn’t be a bad thing if there were some likable characters to lean on, but the characters are practically cardboard cutouts. Cale (yep that’s his name) is illiterate which could be an interesting twist if it wasn’t just an extremely obvious opportunity to throw the main characters in the same room so they can get to the sex scenes quicker.

The Beast AKA Gil has random moments where he gets angry and pushes Cale away, but they’re really contrived moments that don’t further our understanding of either party.

Honestly, the only part I somewhat enjoyed were the sex scenes as they were written better than the rest of the plot and I was annoyed when we had to go back to the main story because it was so tedious.

When I finally got to the end I was surprised to read a half-assed sequel lead-in in the last 10ish or so pages. It wasn't clearly a part one of two at any point in the story which I think is another weakness. I will not be reading the sequel.

Overall, nothing really feels earned, which makes this a really unsatisfying read.

This was a middle-of-the-road read. I was in a Beauty and the Beast mood, and for a B&B retelling it was alright. It was intriguing enough for me to finish it, but it's nothing spectacular. I enjoyed the no frills and breezy writing, but since I just finished the insanely wonderful and better characterized Briarley (at 100 pages shorter no less), it's hard not to compare.

A major stumbling block was it was hard to feel bad for the characters when the reason for the curse was fuzzy at best. I don't really know why Gil was cursed. The characters also seem to be stuck in another dimension or plane, but it's never fully explained. I don't know why there are monsters outside the manor compound, what they are and why they are attacking the manor. The Beast itself was a bit of a let down too, since Gil seems to be just a common werewolf. All of these questions will probably be answered in the second book, but it left this one quite bare in terms of answers and satisfaction.

Romance-wise I wasn't super into it. In most B&B retelling, while there is a clock ticking silently, it generally doesn't get in the way of our protagonists other than drivng the plot forward when needed. The sense of urgency is there but usually it never feels intrusive with our MCs' relationship development. In The Beast of Ashwood Manor however, the other inhabitants of the Manor were constantly watching, urging or expecting Cale and Gil to fall in love asap. Unfortunately, I really disliked the stress of the other characters putting that expectation on Cale. The relationship has to develop organically. I get the characters were desperate and anyone in their shoes would behave the same, but it kind of takes out the romance for me as a reader. It's difficult to root for the romance when Cale and Gil was constantly pushed to get to know each other better, despite their actual feelings about it. Sorry to use Briarley again, but the timeline in that book was only about 2 months, but I never once felt the romance between the MCs was unnatural or rushed.

Overall, I don't regret reading this since it was a quick one for me. The existence of a second book came as a surprise since I assumed this was a standalone, but I am interested in the next book of the duology. Hopefully the romance will be better now that Cale and Gil don't have a a prod consistently poking them behind their backs. And some answers and further worldbuilding would be nice too.

▪️ Thoughts:
Gil the Lord of the Manor is grumpy, closed off, sometimes misunderstood character. He does have his reasons for why he guards himself and doesn't want to get close to others. But once he meets Cale someone who is very caring and who sincerely wants to get to know everyone, Gil can't help himself from starting to care and feel something for him.🥰
Cale is someone who can easily love another person when he gets to know them. As he begins so speak to everyone in the Manor he takes notice in how Gil is always alone in his tower. Time passes and Cale and Gil begin to have a bond over reading and poetry, and oh how much I loved those moments🥹.
Honestly, it's beautiful to see how Cale cares deeply and unconditionally, and also for Gil to be able to open up himself once again however slowly and careful it might be.💖 This is a slow burn and is the first book of The Ashwood Curse duology.
The author wrote this MM retelling of Beauty and the Beast and I really enjoyed seeing how they added their own ideas and the dark aspect to the story. I can not wait for the continuation and see what the author has in mind for Gil's and Cale's future. It does end in a HFN with a slight cliffhanger in some aspects, however not too bad where it leaves your head reeling with ideas. Highly recommend to give this book a chance because who doesn't want to read a retelling🤗.

💬 Quotes:
▪️“Why?” I was fishing for the answer. “I told you before, and it hasn’t changed. I love you, Gil, whether you’re man or beast.”
▪️He wanted me, and it was enough, because for the past fifteen years, I’d been so lonely. I’d wondered if I would die alone as that beast.
▪️“Out here, I am free,” I told the sky. “The wind is but a whisper, and the sea, though cold, is a . . .” I searched for the words. “Reminder that I am alive,” Gil finished.

I got to read an early version of this MM Beauty and the Beast telling and it was fantastic!

Cale only wanted to get home to visit his mother for Spring Tide when he accidentally found himself transported to another realm. Now stuck in Ashwood Manor, he must quickly adapt to his new life, locked within walls of the estate - for beyond it, lurk terrifying monsters...

Gil is Lord of the Manor, working hard to protect the handful of manor residents (who are awesome btw). Everyone knows how to break the curse - Gil must fall in love with someone who loves him back. Simple, right?

Cale and Gil's relationship develops in a natural way, and it was lovely to see them grow together. The author's writing builds up a fantastical world with plenty of intrigue about the magic that binds them to the manor. The suspense builds throughout the novel as the group begins to run out of time.

Read if you want...

🌹 immersive world-building
🌹 dual POV
🌹 forced proximity
🌹 steamy scenes
🌹 a short, pacey read that packs a punch!

Ends on a HFN and I'm excited to find out what's next in this duology.

I found this book to be intriguing. It’s a story we all know and I still wanted to read it (not an easy feat!) Cale was a solid character, Gil was, too.

The side characters probably didn’t even need to exist, which feels harsh to say, but I didn’t know who any of them were. They were all the same, general friendly character with a different name and description. I would have preferred a smaller cast of side characters if it meant we got to know them as individuals.

The spicy scenes left something to be desired. There was a lot of repetitive word use and it felt a little like reading a list of positions rather than an emotional scene, which I really wanted for Gil and Cale. I also wanted to see a little monster action based on the cover and buildup through the book, this book didn’t give that. The second book holds potential for it!

Four Stars because I did care enough to finish, and it is hard to catch my attention. This had a strong premise and I wanted to know how it ended.

"An MM dark romance" it says. This romance is as dark as a nice summer day.

This was not a dark romance, unless you consider giggles and holding hands and tickling and fun at the beach and cooking togheter and reciting poetry as dark romance. This is the problem with marketing your book wrong: I was fully prepared for a dark romance and found a sweet romance instead, and even though the story was good it got me frustrated.
The story was good until about 90% and then everything felt so rushed as if you had a deadline to meet in about 5 hours and you were filled with energy drinks to write.
Overall a pleasant book, but honestly... I really am curious to know the person that had the idea of labeling this story as a dark romance.

A good retelling with a few unique differences, and a promised part 2 where the story will develop further into something started here but continuing into the differences once the curse was broken. Sometimes the plot felt a bit repetitive (monster attack, goes into forest to hunt monsters, repeat). I particularly enjoyed the existence of the reading lessons. Part 2 promises to be really interesting. Fortunately the author was kind enough not to leave this part on a big cliffhanger.

MM Beauty and the Beast retelling

This is a new author to me and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It wasn’t all sunshine and happiness like some retellings, Gil was a great character, although very grumpy he has many heartfelt moments. Cake was full of innocence yet he had a quiet strength about him as the book went on. I’m so glad I read this book and I’m definitely going read book 2.

A M/M retelling and reimagining of Beauty and the Beast? Yes please!

I’m so glad that I stumbled upon this author with A Tale of Whispers and Rogues. After finishing that trilogy and absolutely LOVING it, I knew I had to sink my teeth into this. And it didn’t disappoint!

I fear I will be reading absolutely every work by this author.

The writing is plain and stilted, and the story not very exciting. Everything is explained very quickly and then proceeds slowly to the resolution.
Young man needs to lure the Lord of the Manor and make them fall in love to break a curse. And so he does. There's no mystery about it.

Finished the book and loved it!! Great writing and storyline.

This is inspired by Beauty and the Beast which is my old time favourite. A few steamy scenes (wish there was more), slow burn and dark romantasy so if this is your thing ,this is the book for you

I don't know whether to say I liked this book or not? Yes, it was interesting to have a retelling of the gay version of Beauty and the Beast. But I don't really know what to think about it.

meh…just okay

Pacing too slow, heat way too mild and no humor at all. It was just okay. This is a new author to me and I don’t know that I’d read the next books when it comes out.
