***Some Spoilers***
I would give this book negative stars if I could. The MMC, Lorenzo, was an abusive narcissist who basically manipulated the MFC, Sofia, into a relationship and into "loving" him. A mafia "prince", he gets whatever he wants and he wants Sofia at his feet. In his quest to get her, he basically r***s/assaults her multiple times in the name of her quote "lust" and for romance, telling her she likes everything he does to her. He has her stalked and followed, threatens her disabled brother, and has her robbed and physically assaulted so that she will turn to him for a relationship and protection. There are intimacy/s** scenes that are cringe-worthy and abusive such as ones involving a coke bottle, rape, and BDSM. Also, A***S** which I've never seen this author use before but which I absolutely hate. That is just me though. I hate An** S**. I don't understand why it is becoming popular and why some authors think that is romantic. It is not. I think it is degrading and worse in this book, the MFC doesn't even agree to it.
That's not all of it, though, it gets worse. The author has one scene in which after Lorenzo has been intimate with Sofia, he makes her stay half-naked and bent over his desk when his father walks into his office after the act and he then lets his father inspect Sofia. His father then makes sexually degrading comments about Sofia and says his son has made a great choice in her, further encouraging his son to keep on abusing and using her. Sofia then leaves in an angry huff but doesn't run from the situation because of her deal with Lorenzo. Honestly, the MFC has no true self-respect or sense of preservation. Sofia never seems to grow a brain to take care of herself and get out of the situation. Even though she's a doctor she seems pretty dumb about everything. She is a doormat.
This book is, in my opinion, seriously nasty and gross. I'm all for a good mafia romance but this one is just poorly written and crass. If disturbing content with assault and abuse is your thing then go for it. Otherwise, I would suggest you stay away. I will be from the author's books from now on.
On reviewing the author's merits on writing alone, she is problematic to put it simply. There are some editing issues and she underdevelops her characters and plot. This is not the first book of hers that I've read and they are all like that. I will not be reading another Lydia Hall book again. She has a lot of growing to do as an author but I'm not sticking it out to find out if she does. If you like a good mafia romance and an author who has truly grown into the genre that I recommend is Nicole Fox. Go read her. I would avoid Lyida Hall.
