I had been looking forward to this book. I’ve recently enjoyed The Thirteenth Sign series by the same author and the teaser made this book seem interesting. A shifter who can’t shift and has to find her place in the paraworld, yep, I wanted to read more about that. Sadly, the fmc here is a dud.
The author tells readers that a leather duster*, leather pants*, boots, black eyeliner, and a pony tail means that the fmc is the best of the best as a pack enforcer. What she describes is the character’s physical appearance, not her skills or abilities. Nevertheless, the author claims that the fmc is great at doing her administrative job for the pack because of the aforementioned wardrobe. Strangely, however, when the author described the fmc acting as an enforcer, she was not, in fact, good at it. It made for a bit of an anathema.
Following the inciting incident, I was left wondering why anyone would want to be part of the Lucan Pack. I would have respected the fmc more if she embraced the inheritance from her mother if she told the pack to kick rocks. Her father treated her badly. The Alpha treated her badly. Oh, and her fated mate throws her over for another woman on the say so of her father and the Alpha.
Instead of standing up for herself, she then trots off to Hawthorne Cove to betray the people and packs there. Gosh. What a charmer. The remainder of the characters are equally icky.
*Surely I cannot be the only person who pictures Ross Gellar from Friends whenever authors use leather clothing as a short hand in lieu of writing actual characters? The sweating. The baby powder.
I'm in love with this new series. Just when I think I've had it with something, it gets completely revitalized. I love it.
So, this new series is about a girl who can't shift ... caught in between. She gets completely rejected and her heart broken. Then she sets out to prove her worth. Sound familiar? It's not what you think. Yep, that's where the fun begins. She gets caught up in some new drama and now I'm addicted to a new series. Just like that.
This new pack... I don't even know what they are and I don't even care -- Sign me up. The girlfriends who are bound together with a blood pact -- I'm here for it.
Definitely recommend it for fans of this genre. Can't wait for the next book.
I don’t like how weak the heroine is. I understand that it’s starting low so there is place to grow but it still leaves a bad first impression. She’s the kind of weak who almost pisses herself from fear but then still gets turned on like a bitch in heat. It’s embarrassing.
Also, I don’t like that she jumped to help her pack when everyone in power, even her dad, treat her like shit. She, herself, said that her alpha was just lying to her to use her but she still wants his approval? What kind of weak ass mindset is that? They humiliated her in front of everyone but she doesn’t do anything about it! She goes off with a plan to betray a whole new group of people who didn’t do nothing to her for them! DNF 50%
Quinn lives a difficult life in her pack, as she's a half breed Lycan and her human side is more dominant, meaning she can't shift. She is seen a second class citizen by her pack, but she's worked hard to train and try establish herself as an enforcer to make up for her perceived deficiencies.
When she unexpectedly inherits a house in a different pack land, one that is rumoured to not let other shifters in, she is manipulated by her pack to go to her new house, ingratiate herself in the pack, and steal an artifact they use to protect themselves. However, she gets far more than she bargained for!
My absolute favourite thing about this we're the shifters she discovers. Without giving away spoilers, what they are is very intriguing.
Romance wise this is a slow burn, which is my favourite, and there are three candidates for the Harem at the moment, but it's all a bit unsure.
My only issue was with Quinn herself. She is obviously someone who will undergo a lot of character development throughout the series, but I didn't warm to her at the start and there were times I wanted to shake her a bit. However, she does begin to readdress her priorities by the end if the book and it is clear there is a lot to be revealed about her character and what she is.
OMG Debbie Cassidy has done it again, built a world that I can't get enough of. I'm on the edge of my seat, I have so many questions. Most importantly, when's book two?
This is a slow burn RH with a rejected mate element.
Quinn is a hybrid a Lucan / Human who has always been treated like she is less than, she's worked hard to become strong to make up for any perceived weaknesses to be good enough for her pack. She works hard as an enforcer doing everything she can to get approval. Despite being the fated mate of the Alphas son she doesn't get the approval or respect she deserves.
Coincidence or fate, when she's rejected by her mate she finds out she's inherited a house in Hawthorne cove, a place no lycan's can go. Suddenly she becomes useful to the pack and they want her to infiltrate Hawthorne and steal an ancient relic of protection, she's promised everything she's ever wanted, respect, a position of importance and her mate back. Will she retrieve the relic or will she find more in Hawthorne than she bargained for.
With her best friend Tate she sets off to Hawthorne where things aren't exactly what they seem. There's intrigue, action and adventure not to mention some sexy hotties.
The world building and story set up is incredible but I expect nothing less at this point from this amazing fantasy author.
I couldn’t get beyond the first few chapters. If there’s anything I can’t stand, it’s a naive and ignorant female character. Especially the lead female character. This girl was either too stupid or too ignorant to figure out her pack was using her and went along with anything they asked of her. She was supposed to be a badass and yet she let these people treat her like crap. You gotta at least respect the characters and I didn’t. Couldn’t finish it it was so bad
Quinn is a different sort of heroine for Debbie Cassidy - though no less b@d@ss.... it fact, she may be more so because of her shortcomings and life of rejection. Side note.... THAT HURT. Honestly, getting to know Quinn and seeing how her pack views her is a harsh feeling that grates, one that Quinn seems almost oblivious to in her quest to become accepted by a pack that truly doesn't deserve her. Honestly they really, really don't deserve her. The Alpha, her father, or that supposed mate in question. Quinn should really just tell them all to go jump off a short pier.
Anyway, I won't spoil the crux of the tale, except to say that the human Best Friend, Tate, is far more interesting than any of the lycan pack - one I want to explore far more closely. At this point, I have an idea of where the story is headed, but no solid signposts. Cassidy has a way of weaving detours in her writing, and I feel this tale will be no different. I'm eager to see where Quinn eventually lands.
Well let me say this is definitely a fresh take on a shifter read and so far I am into this!
Quinn has a screwed up pack to be honest. She spends her life trying to prove herself to the pack since she is a half breed by becoming one of their best enforcers. Well it does her no good. Her mate, the alphas son, is forced to reject her. Then the alpha realizes she has asset to an artifact he has to have and makes a deal. She retrieves the artifact then she gets a place in the pack and her mate back. Yeah she agrees to it....smh.
In order to prevent some spoilers I will keep this brief. Tate her bff is amazing and possibly there is more to them than meets the eye. *fingers crossed* The Hawthorne pack is other worldly and I am VERY undecided how I feel about them.
As always an entertaining read from a Cassidy book but I have to say Quinn is my least favorite female MC of hers yet (and I've read most her series).
It's not like she's entirely unlikeable but her flaws were the types that particularly grate on my nerves. She lacks self-confidence which makes her seek validation and recognition from others and make her act recklessly. She's bullheaded to the point of being blind to what's going on around her. Not to mention that incident in the past that she caused but she ended up blaming her friends for, too immature to assume responsability for it. The whole premise of stealing the artifact too. It made me question her moral compass, the conculsion I came to did not further endear her to me. Honestly she felt a bit like a teenager and if I wanted to read about a kid I'd read YA novel, not a Cassidy book.
The only potential love interest I like so far is Tate (I'm guessing the others right now are Jax and Bryan). Probably because the male leads literally don't have any humanity which makes them, you know... unlikeable. I mean, if I wanted to read about the mating process of predators I'd read the National Geographic, not a Cassidy book. Mmmh.... there's a pattern here.
It was very predictable as well, I figured out the "twist" if you can call it that. To the point I'm not even sure if it was supposed to be a mystery at all.
Now what I liked: Her girl friends. Much more likeable. I hope they have their own series in the future. The whole rejected mate thing. Tate. The setting. Fast paced as usual. Never a boring moment. Many side characters that feel unique. As usual. The writing. As usual.
As soon as I saw a new series coming from Debbie Cassidy I was on board without even knowing the premise- that is how good she is! The storytelling is amazing and it flows so well across the page. You are drawn in right from the start and you will not want to put the book down- and you are left needing the next book immediately!
Quinn is a hybrid, she is a Lycan/Human and has always been treated like she is a lesser member of the pack- more human than wolf. She is unable to shift but she maintains speed, strength, and stealth and she's worked hard to make up for any perceived weaknesses. She strives to be good enough for her pack, working hard as an enforcer to get the approval she desperately wants. Despite being the fated mate of the Alphas son she doesn't get the respect she deserves.
When she's rejected by her mate, fate steps in and throws her a curveball. She finds out she's inherited a house from her mother in Hawthorne cove, a place no Lycans can go. All of a sudden, she becomes useful to the pack. They want her to infiltrate Hawthorne and steal an ancient relic of protection and bring it back to them. In return, she is promised everything she's ever wanted: respect, a position of importance, and even her mate back. Will she be able to complete the mission? Or are some things best left in the past, is a different future in the cards for Quinn?
The world-building and story setup is incredible as I have said before. Debbie Cassidy really does know how to make a world that you want to get lost in-no matter how dangerous! The book is filled with all sorts of hurdles and emotions that you won't want to stop reading for anything. It is definitely a rollercoaster of a ride.
The characters are all different and they all have their own brand of personality. There is so much sexual tension in this book that is slowly built up over this book that you are begging for more. I have fallen so hard for Tate already and really hope things go right for him! Although saying that, there is a pull to Jax that is undeniable. I really can not see how this book is going to go and I am anxious to get book 2! A definite must-read in my opinion.
The more I read of this author the more and more i fall in love with her books. She has such an unique way of writing that I cant help but devour everything.
My pro and con for this book coincide with each other as they tend to do with this author so I'll just talk about the points instead that I found refreshing. What I really loved the most about this book was that while Quinn was painted as a bad*ss pack enforcer (hopefully I'm not the only one who pictures someone unbeatable in a fight) we soon learn that it's not necessarily the case. It just opens up the book so much more and I loved getting a deeper sense of her insecurities and the reasoning behind them.
Its a great and refreshing read and I'm excited to see what book 2 brings us.
I went in blind, as usual, so I didn’t know the tropes. I only knew this was about a shifter. Quinn is part lycan part human. She cannot shift so she’s treated as an outcast in her pack. Her alpha gives her a task to leave town, get something, bring it to him and she will be respected by her pack. Of course she says yes because she wants her pack to respect her. Her human best friend goes with her to this new town. They arrive and it’s crazy! There’s a pack of wolves there. But apparently not traditional wolves. I’ve no clue what they are exactly but I can’t wait to find out. And the town? This town seems awesome! That’s all I can say without spoiling anything. I couldn’t put the book down, I thought it was so good! I’m actually glad it took me so long to find this series because that cliff? It wasn’t even a big one, but as soon as I finished this I downloaded book two. I was hooked.
“A Shifter’s Sin” is the first book I’ve read in a long time that has an unusual take on vampires or the cold ones. It is not this overly romanticized version of some tall, dark and sexy stranger but it paints them as true monsters.
Quinn is half Lycan and half human. She is unable to shift but has work hard to be of benefit to her pack. She is an enforcer but also he has a mate bond with the Alpha’s son, Ward. While he professes to love her he treats her like she is just a mere convenience much to the annoyance of her best friend, Tate. Tate sees Ward for who and what he is, a jerk.
Ward’s older brother is to be wed in n an effort to forge an alliance with another pack but he is killed. So Ward’s father decides to marry Ward off to the woman shocking both the pack and Quinn. His father breaks their mate bond and Quinn is left bereaved. That is until she receives paperwork indicating that her human mother left her property in Hawthorne Cove, an off the grid haven for humans and paranormals not subject up the rules governing other Lycans. Additionally they have a protective relic that protects them from outsiders especially Lycan.
Of course Quinn learns of this when Ward comes to apologize to her. Although she kicks him out he runs to his dad with the news. Quinn’s asshat of a father shows up and takes her and the paperwork to the Alpha where he tells Quinn he will restore her mate bond with Wade is she steals the relic from Hawthorne Cove. Emotionally fraught Quinn agrees and with her friend, Tate heads off to the Cove.
The world in the Cove is unique but not welcoming. The house Quinn inherited is wonderful in the inside but needs a lot on work on the grounds. When she goes to introduce herself to the pack leader she is in for a surprise. He is scary as all hell and he doesn’t want her there. She manages to appease him and then she discovers that when she entered the Cove she created a breach allowing the cold ones in. Because a human died she has been given a death sentence if she doesn’t find a way to destroy them. Now Quinn must call on her friends she turned her back on a few years ago to assist her. One thing for sure, Quinn has definitely bitten off more than she can chew!
Initially I was wondered this would a cheesy YA read with a formulaic plot; but, it turns out to be Young Adult with a storyline filled with depth and complexity. The characters are mysterious and the reader can feel the tension that they are in for a wild ride. I gobbled down this first book and now about to read the second. My friends this is a read you definitely want to put on your to read list.
Just when you think that this author would have run out of idea's she creates yet another unique world with a unique breed of shifter never yet seen and even in book one sets herself up with not one but two spin off series as we start the book with three best friends who sign a blood pact to always bee there for each other. Quinn the half Lycan who cant shift, Nix the demon blood with hardly any powers & Orina who is from a mystical hunter bloodline. This first series follows Quinn and her other Best friend Tate who by all accounts is a human healer or at least the grand son of one. Quinn is happy, she has carved out a place in her pack even though she cant shift and found her sole mate, life couldn't be any better for her that is until the Death of the Alpha's oldest son changes everything and the Alpha's response changes everything. Quinn must now enter an area that is protected by a barrier that most Lycan cant cross and steal an artificat for her pack and that when the storey comes to life. Full of action, twists and turns galore and so many wonderfully interesting characters. I love the fact that the author took her time world building and developing her characters before hitting us with the action we know, love and lets face it demand from her books so yes it starts a little slower but its well worth it. The book draws you in and is definitely a read in one sitting cant put down for anything type of book. The only issue with it? well that is the fact that you have to wait a month or two for the next book which i desperately need at the moment as book one was so amazingly good!
I love a blocked power story, and this one really delivered. Quinn is a Lycan who can't shift so, of course, her pack is a bunch of assholes who treat her terribly. She gives her all to gain their respect, but they're too prejudiced to really give her a fair shake.
Her fated mate, Ward, totally screws her over, and though you can see it coming, it still stings. She runs away to Hawthorne Cove and the property her mother mysteriously left her. And with it, she has a chance to earn a spot on her pack's council, a position of respect. If only she brings back a powerful relic.
Once she gets to Hawthorne Cove and we meet the pack there, it's clear that stealing from them would be a stupid, stupid idea. It gives the story a lot of tension.
I loved the worldbuilding, the relationships, and the characters. Tate and Quinn as best friends really worked for me, and I liked the other males circling around Quinn's orbit.
The start sort of threw me off, as it didn't go in the direction I expected, but it still really sucked me in and was a fast, fun read.
Honestly, what is even going on in this book. And I mean that in a good way. There is so much to unpack in this book, and I have so many questions. Quinn is a hybrid shifter, she has some of the perks of being a shifter but she can't actually shift. And that's put her pretty low down in the pack, but it's okay cause she's mated to the Alpha's son. Well, until she isn't. Everything is ripped away from her, but a mysterious letter could be her one way to get everything back.
She heads to Hawthorne Cove, a place where Lycans aren't welcome. She meets another pack of shifters there, but they aren't your everyday, run-of-the-mill shifters. And honestly, I'm so intrigued by them, and that's where some of my questions come in!
I for one really enjoyed this first book to the Wolves of Hawthorne Cove series, and I admit I almost threw my kindle across the room when it ended because I just wanted to know more. Really looking forwards to book two when it comes out.
Quinn is half human half lycan. She never felt like she belonged to her pack, especially after her mate rejects her. Given the opportunity to raise ranks, she accepts to steal an artefact that should give her clan power. The only problem is that it's in a city where lycan cannot enter. Thanks to her half human nature, she can pass the city's barrier with her human friend Tate, and together they find new supernatural creatures and dive into the mystery that seem to surround the city.
This book hooked me from page 1. Quinn is such a strong character, but she doesn't realise her worth due to her clan. I really hope that the new clan she finds in Hawthorne can make her finally understand how much worthy she is. I cannot wait for book 2.
I was kindly provided with an ARC by the author, but I'm leaving a voluntary and honest review.
I really enjoyed aspects of this, but the execution wasn’t fabulous. We are told Quinn is strong and capable, an enforcer, but we don’t see it in evidence until almost the end of the book. I also didn’t feel the chemistry between her and the men who will eventually be her mates. However I did like the story itself and the world created and will most likely move on to the next one.
This book seriously had my adrenaline pumping with everything that happened. Nothing is as it seems and the ending left me with more questions and a burning need for the answers. well written and developed, from the plot to the characters. Its everything needed and more
what a fabulously epic new shifter book!! ... love Quinn, a Lycan that cannot shift, and Tate, "just" a human ... sent in an impossible mission to save her pack, Quinn quickly learns things aren't as they appear to be ... and that ending!!! cannot wait for the next!
I just love this author and the stories she comes up with. Each one is unique and just as addicting as the one before.
In A Shifter's Sin we have Quinn, the main character who is the beta's daughter. She is supposed to be mated to the Alpha's son, but does things go how she wants? Of course not. Quinn must find a new path for herself. A lot happens in this book that I just could not look away from.
One of the things I like about Debbie is she always writes these amazing female leads that have so much thrown at them, but they keep on. They are tough women that maybe even after getting rejected still do what they can.
So would I recommend this new start to a series, heck yeah I would. Cannot wait for book two!
Oh boy did I dislike this lead character. I’m used to being annoyed by all the Marie Sues and wannabe tough girls but typically they either improve or the whole book is a dud so ⅔ times I won’t mention it. But gosh did I not get how this character had so many solid characters wanting to be around her. Like she has shit logic, shit self esteem, shit morals, and is just generally shit.
The whole story is essentially her being rejected by (surprise) the alpha’s son, which leads to her trying to gain favour by infiltrating and robbing a secretive community of a protection relic. Of course her discovery and admittance to this community came about when she conveniently inherits a house there from her long lost mother the day after she is rejected. And obviously her devoted (probably not) human hot guy friend accompanies her. And surprise surprise there is a group of hot alpha male mystery shifters in this town. And why not have every walking talking misogynizing six pack and pretty eyes hit on her even though she’s got no self esteem and needs the validation of a crappy pack to feel good about herself. Throw in a reunion of other powerful friends, some life and death experiences, and a dramatic reveal you saw coming from chapter two, et voilà!
The book was cliche and predictable. I enjoyed the world and some of the characters. I did not enjoy the lead or how the story was assembled though. I felt no sympathy for the most part for most of the crap that happened to the FMC because she could have avoided a lot of it.
I could break down her character more but it was like a build up of small things that made her dislikable to me. Like her relationship with her mate and how she had no back bone. Her need for recognition from a pack that has mostly disregarded her and her insecurities about not shifting. Her pity parties when things go wrong. The whole reason and behaviour around her estrangement from her friends. The fact she thinks it’s okay to steal what protects one community to further her packs well-being without considering why and how stealing it will effect Hawthorne Cove. Her fear of a brownie when she is supposedly all badass. Gosh there are probably more but these are just the top of my head here. Individually I could probably get over some of these things or forget but they kept popping up like whack a mole.
Things I’m feeling are predictable: her mum probably getting taken by the calling, her other half probably having to do with the sea, her potentially getting it on with Tate Bryce Emmit and/or Jax, Tate having supernatural heritage, her friends doing something stupid to get her out of town causing more problems, and the calling having something to do with all the fae baby-mammas.
What I wish happened was more explanation around the tattoo she got when she was young or acknowledgement of it (like I don’t even know what it looks like) and having someone else acknowledge this magical marking. General descriptions of characters would be nice too, I didn’t even know she had pink hair until one of the final chapters. Also no one wants to read about a character’s quivering bladder (especially when the character is supposed to be tough) let alone three times, like am I alone in the “wtf?” factor every time her “clenching” bladder (yuck) was mentioned??
Okay I need to stop hating on this book. It’s not horrible and was readable so I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. Mentally it’s a low 3 though because of all the aforementioned crappola. So without further ado...
Quinn is a lycan. Sort of. She's half lycan, but unlike the other halflings she can't shift. She has all the senses but is trapped in a human form. So imagine her surprise when her mate turns out to be the alpha's son. But, things aren't what they seem. Rogues are getting bolder and invading pack lands. And packs are merging, taking over other packs. Like her pack. And when her mate's older brother dies it lands on him to be the one to marry into another pack for safety. Her bond was ripped out for the good of the pack. Small comfort. So when an unknown inheritance lands in her lap she's eager to get away. Until the alpha finds out about it and wants to use her to steal a relic that would protect them all. And he dangles her broken mate bonds back on her face.
Spoilers ahead. So this is definitely not a rejected mate trope. There's a couple mysteries going on here. Why that town? What is the Calling? What happens to those Called? What is the pack that protects the town? What is that relic? Why is it fae that are Called? What do the symbols mean? Quinn grows so much in this book. She starts off with her tough girl persona, and yes, she is strong. What happens shakes her foundations. Lycans want packs. She's fighting her very nature at the end but I was so proud of her for that epiphany. I've also discovered that Cassidy is brutal on those cliffhangers lol.
Edit to change my original stars down to a 1 because after the 4th book I'm done with authors with no respect for readers. Three books in a row of s*xual assault themes and a r*pe by her mate. And not a single warning anywhere. This first book is the only "safe" one in the series. But I'm still leaving a single star to warn readers away before they delve into the second one and the trauma starts.
This book is the perfect answer to a bad day. It's a book you'll get lost in and when you resurface you'll be either binge reading the next book or begging the author to give it to you lol The characters are amazing - and I know I say that a lot, but these characters are so relatable that I cried less than 20% into the book. I never cry! I wanted to scream at the FMC a few times to set her straight. I felt so invested in the story that I didn't realize it was ending until the last page, and I really didn't want to leave this world so much that I'm about to start a reread even though I just finished.
