A pleasant walk along the coast on Folly Beach, South Carolina, thrusts retiree Chris Landrum and his friend Charles Fowler into investigating a death that police are convinced was an unfortunate accident. Their resolve to continue sticking their noses where according to the police they have no business being was strengthened when a second person dies—the second death of a member of the small crew building a beachfront home. With no connection between the victims other than the house under construction, Chris and his circle of amateur detectives struggle to identify a motive, much less the identity of the perpetrator or perpetrators of the alleged crimes.
It takes a third mysterious death before the police become suspicious, but by then, Chris and Charles are already in over their heads, a perilous position that could add them to the list of victims unless they can catch the killer or killers.
Bill Noel has again steered Chris, Charles and all the Folly Beach family through a well constructed mystery. While taking a walk, the two amateur detectives witness a death at a construction site. While the police declare it to be an accident, things just don’t not add up for Chris and Charles. When more deaths follow, the mystery deepens. While struggling to uncover the murderer, Chris finally figures things out, but not before he and Charles find themselves in peril. Well written and enjoyable, as always!
A pleasant time enjoying a couple of older gents solving the puzzling case of workers being killed on a job site. Chris, Charles, Brad, a few other friends and some friendly police make an enjoyable read. I wish Chris would ask one of his friends to pay for their own meals and drinks now and then.
If you like books with continuity this is the series for you. The characters are colorful, the relationships are heartwarming, and enough humor and mystery to make a fun read. I've been to Folly Beach so that's a fun plus and makes the series come to life.
