Review:
“I thought you didn’t like me,” I admit. “I haven’t decided if I like you or not yet,”
I'm really sorry. I tried to like this book so much, but I really could not. It was, honestly, not for me. First, let me start off with my first issue. It was too insta-love. Willow enters the bar at the beginning of the book with her friend, and she sees every woman in the room looking at this one mysterious man, so, obviously, to feed her curiosity, she looks too. And suddenly, she’s in love. The first night they meet, she tries to indulge in conversation as they are literally with a group of people, and he’s rude to her. (But we can allow that because he’s mysterious and doesn’t talk.) Then later, when she leaves the bar, he follows her out the door, walks her home, and then has the audacity to kiss her. On the first night that they met??! So obviously, Willow is confused by this random kiss. As any woman would be. The next day comes, and Wyatt (one of Zane's friends that Willow meets at the bar) texts her asking to hang out (I can’t remember exactly what it was) so Zane and Wyatt pick her up from her cottage, and they go on this little outing. ACTING LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED. Mind you, they are literally thirty-year-olds.
And it's not even that. There are a few unresolved problems from HIGH SCHOOL for Wyatt and Zane. That they clearly hadn't figured out as thirty-year-olds. Naturally, Wyatt then chooses to act like a dramatic teenager who has just gone through puberty and FIGHTS with Zane over a girl. A man who is thirty years old. It was hard to take this book seriously at this point. I apologize; I really tried to enjoy it, but I just couldn't. I just thought it was so unbelievably humiliating that Wyatt and Zane were fighting over a whole woman. Only because Wyatt felt some animosity toward Zane because, in high school, Zane was more "attractive" and apparently stole a girl from him. Therefore, Wyatt felt threatened and tried to steal Willow from Zane.
Moving on from my hate on Wyatt and Zanes relationship. I kind of loved Willow. She was actually a decent character and didn’t act like a ludicrous hormonal teenager. I loved how, when she broke things off with Zane, she really made him work for it. And he really had to grovel to get her back AS SHE SHOULD. A woman should never just let a man not grovel after doing such a stupid thing. (Zane was a heinous character, and I really don’t want to get into his deranged behaviour.) WILLOW DESERVES MORE. I love how Willow had some resemblance to peace at the end (minus Zane, because he’s not peace). I forgot to also mention that she ended up moving to Sullivan's Way because she gets a job at the urgent care facility close by.
Last thought. My favourite character was Benji (the third man in the friend group). He was so amazing and unproblematic. He just lives, laugh, loves through life.
Thank you Wordsmith Publicity & Michelle Scott for this advance copy. This is truly an honest review and my opinion.
