A marriage of convenience will protect her reputation on the long trail ahead, but he’s barely more than a stranger…
Tessa Harris is a woman without options. When she’s stranded nearly two hundred miles from her destination, her only companions are a former British Cavalry officer and his two young brothers. Society dictates they cannot travel without a chaperone, but can she trust this handsome stranger to protect her if they choose to marry? And if so, should she show her feelings or guard her heart? She’s learned the hard way how painful it is to love a man who doesn’t reciprocate.
Stephen Griffith has enough responsibility caring for his young brothers, and now he shoulders the massive responsibility of keeping his new wife safe as they cross the wilderness toward a new life. And though he tries to keep her at arm’s length, reminding himself their marriage may only be a temporary arrangement, he cannot seem to shake the feelings growing for her.
When they fall into the hands of outlaws, Tessa and Stephen must overcome their hardest obstacle yet. Only God can bring them safely to the end of the trail where enduring love awaits.

This book suffered from what I call Modern Movie Syndrome. There was action and Big Events happening again and again without a pause to breathe. As such, I didn’t really get to know the characters as well as I hoped to.
Friendship and tragedies end in a resounding legacy!
This was the first book by this Author for me and I wasn’t disappointed. The style of writing was easy to read; historical details were given with vivid clarity. I felt the joys and heartaches of Tessa and Stephen with them as the story moved. What fortitude our ancestors had!
The epilogue was moving, beautiful, but also, bittersweet as memories are both beloved and painful. It brought a closure to the novel that touched my heart.
I enjoyed this novel and would revisit it. I received a complimentary copy and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.
From the second I saw Trail of Promises's GORGEOUS cover, I knew I just had to read it, so I was thrilled when I was accepted for the Celebrate Lit tour for this book!
I loved getting to meet Tessa and Stephen and watch their relationship grow and develop throughout the book. It was interesting watching them learn to trust and rely on each other, despite their less-than-ideal circumstances.
I especially loved how Stephen's brothers welcomed Tessa into the family. It was adorable! While I would've expected there to be a bit more resistance to suddenly getting a sister-in-law, the boys took everything in stride and were just so sweet to Tessa!
The plot was exciting and kept me reading late into the night. I loved reading about each of Stephen and Tessa's escapades, especially since the pacing didn't leave much room for dull moments!
While I really enjoyed the book, I did find the plot a bit choppy in places and at times the dialogue was a bit too stilted for my tastes.
Overall, I really enjoyed Susan Craft's Trail of Promises. It is perfect for anyone who loves marriage of conveniences and sweet historical fiction!
I received an ARC of this book. My opinions are my own. A positive review was not required.
This is book two in the Great Wagon Road series but reads as a stand-alone. I have such admiration for these people who tackle the hardship and danger of wagon trails looking for a better future. These characters show such great resilience and maturity in the face of danger and tragedy and I loved how inspiring their lives were. The historical details were well researched and you felt like a part of the story. I must admit by the epilogue I was sobbing so make sure you have a few tissues. This is a beautiful love story born out of a necessity to survive. You will be blessed to add to your TBR pile. I received a complimentary copy from CelebrateLit. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
“By agreeing to travel with him, she had placed herself under his protection. Her body might be petite, but the responsibility of keeping her safe would be massive. Was he up to the task?”
Trail of Promises by Susan F. Craft is the second Great Wagon Road book ( and second in the series) that I have read. Quick thoughts in this paragraph: These books are great historical standalones , not about the Oregon Trail, but about the Wagon Trail that ran through the colonies from New York usually extending to South Carolina or further. I liked the first. I was definitely hooked by the second. Author notes are very important, and I love the help finding out which events are based on history! The fourth thought- after two of these books, you couldn’t pay me enough to be a part of this exceedingly dangerous wagon trail road!! ( But I will definitely be reading the other books of the series as soon as they release!!)
In Trail of Promises, unexpected tragedy causes a woman, sketcher-portrait artist to travel unaccompanied in 1753 on the trail with an attractive, former British military man and his younger brothers. But they are unmarried without a proper chaperone. Will this do harm to their reputations once they reach any settlements?
Stephen Griffith and Tessa Harris eventually do enter a marriage of convenience, but will that be enough for each of them? ( Note: This is a clean, and faith-based book.)
The trail is arduous not just in its path, but the events that the foursome must pass through. Will they crack under the horrendous strain of their encounter with extreme evil and other difficulties, or will they come out tried and shining as gold?
For those who love pre-Revolutionary times, wagon train stories, faith-filled stories, and great evil vs good.
I received a copy of the novel from the author via Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own ecopy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.
Notable Quotables:
“Even though the soap washed away the scent of death, nothing could ever erase the dark memories that must be lurking in their minds.”
“God walked with her through her valley. His love would sustain her through whatever lay ahead.”
“He made mistakes. We all do. Do not dwell on bad memories, but try to recall some of the good times you had with your father.”
“So, as a man, you feel compelled to hide your emotions?” “They were trained out of us, I’m afraid. Not the emotions themselves, but any display of them.”
“People do many things when their life or the life of someone they love is threatened.”
“Many beautiful things in the wilderness have an ugly side.”
Trail of Promises is a wonderful historical fiction novel from the 1700’s that involves danger, suspense, and romance. Our danger involves travelling the Great Wagon Road. It’s not for the faint of heart and definitely not to be considered safe by any stretch of the imagination.
Suspense comes from being captured. Well, that’s just one example. There were a few other suspenseful moments. When you’re travelling a dangerous path you have to know suspense will come.
And then there is the romance. It’s a marriage of convenience but can it become more?
She needs him to keep her safe but also to save her reputation.
I enjoy a good marriage of convenience story and watching our characters come to life and learn that they truly can like each other and then seemingly fall in love as well. This follows that path (not to be a spoiler because you had to already know that) but you can’t even imagine the bumps and bruises along the path.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It is the second in a series. You don’t have to read them in order but of course you should! There are more to come and I couldn’t be happier. I’m anxiously awaiting them.
Please stop back by and let me know what you think of this book once you’ve had a chance to read it too.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
What I think you should know: Trail of Promise by Susan F Craft is the second book in the Great Wagon Road series. It is a historical fiction set in 1753. It follows settlers as they travel from Pennsylvania to South Carolina along what was known as the Great Wagon Road. This book features Artist Tessa Harris and former Soldier Stephen Griffith This book is able to be read as a standalone!
What you might need to know: This is not a fluffy read, it gives a graphic and realistic view of what life would have been like for settlers. I would not recommend this book for immature readers as it does involve death.
What I think about this book: Bravo Mrs. Craft! This book was amazing. Tessa and Stephen were thrust into a situation that neither anticipated when they joined the Wagon Train in Pennsylvania. The road to South Carolina was more treacherous than they ever imagined. This was such a captivating story that kept me hooked from first page to last. I love how Craft worked Faith so beautifully into the book. This book had such great reminders of the way that God provides for our needs in such unexpected ways and has a plan before we even know the need exists. I loved the quote “A devil who knew the Bible? Beware!” What an amazing reminder! I loved this book and can’t wait to see what is next from Craft
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
Beautiful and engaging story of two people who help each other out during trying times. At first I was worried that Tessa would find herself stranded out in the middle of nowhere. Her father has given up and takes to drinking to drown his sorrows. The wagon train they are with is long, hot and tiring. When an accident happens , Tessa’s father decides to go seek help.
Stephen is a good man who has taken care of his brothers after the death of their parents. I liked how he never complained about his responsibility and took great care in every decision he made. After a tragic death, Stephen feels responsible for Tessa as well. The journey has just begun for these weary travelers.
The author has done her research well when describing what it was like during this time period. I loved feeling like I was traveling right beside them as they make their way to a new beginning. The story is filled with danger, along with a foundation of faith. I was pleasantly surprised by how serious Stephen was about protecting Tessa.
Don’t miss this sweet story of romance, faith and an illustration of trusting others. As the couple departs onto the trail after being married they seem happy but a little shy around each other. Will they stay married when they reach their destination? Grab a copy to find out what happens next.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
Christian Historical Romance is one of my favorite genre of books. Trail of Promises by Susan F. Craft is Book 2 in the Great Wagon Road Series. I have been anxiously anticipating the release of this book since I read Book 1.
We are taken back to 1753 and the main characters are Tessa Harris and Former Soldier Stephen Griffith. Tessa is on the Wagon Train heading to South Carolina with her father. They become stranded and then along comes Stephen and his 2 brothers. Stephen would love to help Tessa get to her destination, but in order to travel together they would need to be married or have a chaprone. Stephen poses the idea of marriage and Tessa is intrigued by the option. Will Tessa and her Dad make it to South Carolina? Will Stephen and Tessa get married?
WOW, this book was totally worth the wait. The Book is a Marriage of Convenience story and I absolutely LOVE books with that theme. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. I could not put it down until I finished. I really LOVE that Stephen is willing to marry Tessa to rescue her. I also LOVE that they both have a strong faith and it showed throughout the book. The twists and turns throughout the book kept my attention. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance. AMAZING BOOK!
Trail of Promises the second book in the Great Wagon Road Series is just as great as the first one. Both books by Susan F. Craft it deals with people traveling the wagon Road north to south usually beginning in Pennsylvania. Tessa Harris begins the journey to South Carolina along side her father but dilemmas come their way as well as the wagon that was traveling behind them. Former British Cavalry officer Stephen Griffith and his two younger brothers are there to help her since their wagon doesn’t pass on by. A man and woman traveling together poses a problem but solutions are found. I love how the story has God’s hand beautifully portrayed in this story at every turn despite the difficulties endured. The characters are strong believers that encourage each other which I enjoyed. The epilogue was bittersweet but I appreciate seeing them after the journey has been completed and they life together.
For a believable, sweet, and lovely marriage of convenience, Trail of Promises is a story not to be missed. I loved these characters so I was glad to see the final outcome but also sad to be finished reading their story.
Trail of Promise is another intriguing tale on the Great Wagon Road in 1753. Even though this is book two in the Great Wagon Road series it can be read as a standalone as book one characters are not in this read.
Tessa and her father were looking forward to starting over in Camden, SC with their artistic business but difficulties along the trail occurred. Stephen and Tessa’s story is filled with detailed historical events, mystery to who caused the losses, twists and turns along with a solution to Tessa traveling with a man and his younger brothers to save her reputation. I admired the determination, foresight, fortitude, faith and endurance the characters had along with secondary characters that had a role in their lives along the trail.
The epilogue was touching to see how their legacy played out as only God could orchestra from broken dreams into beauty. Susan F. Craft is another Christian Historical fiction writer I’ll be wanting to read more of.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Wild Heart Books and Celebrate Lit for the book tour. I have expressed my own thoughts as no positive review was required.
I’ve read the first book on the great wagon road and now the second. Both wonderful in their own right with different characters traveling the same road but with changed circumstances. Tessa is on a wagon train with her father traveling to South Carolina. Stephen is traveling with his two young brothers to the same location. When tragedy happens and Tessa finds herself alone, Stephen and his brothers offer for her to travel with them. Only problem is her reputation and the only solution is a marriage of convenience. Many weeks traveling, camping at night and danger lurking here and there made the characters grow in their faith and spirit. I came to love these characters and that’s why reading the epilogue was so difficult. I cried like a baby over and over as I read the last seven pages. This was a special and moving story of the early settlers in the colonies. I’m looking forward to the next book about the great wagon road. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through Celebrate Lit but was not required to write a review.
Trail of Promises by Susan F. Craft is a Christian historical romance. When Tessa Harris finds herself stranded nearly 200 miles from her destination, she realizes she has limited choices. Stranded with a former British Cavalry officer, Stephen Griffith, and his two young brothers, she agrees to a marriage of convenience. As the foursome makes their way to her destination, various events and people cross their paths. Stephen works to keep his brothers and his new wife safe.
I loved how the author developed the characters and the storyline. It moved at an excellent pace that kept my interest, and I found myself unable to put the book down. Sometimes, a marriage of convenience grows into a marriage filled with love. The ending of this book wraps up the story nicely. However, I must say I would love to read more books about Stephen’s brothers and all of their families.
So, if you enjoy Christian historical romances, check out Trail of Promises by Susan F. Craft.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
Trail of Promises is book two in author Susan F. Craft’s the Great Wagon Road Series. This historical Christian romance is poignant wagon adventure from New York to South Carolina. I was invested within the first few pages.
Set in 1753, this is the story of Tessa Harris and Stephen Griffith. Unexpected circumstances have placed them together in this suspenseful adventurous tale. There are many dangerous things awaiting them as they traverse the wagon trail. The author researched well.
Filled with bits of history, this is an exciting pre-revolutionary marriage of convenience novel. The author has crafted two Christian characters that work well together. They encourage and support each other well. God’s plan and help is nicely included in the storyline.
I highly recommend this captivating book. It will keep you flipping pages to see what happens next. Be sure to read the Author’s Notes. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest thoughts.
I absolutely loved this series! It focuses on the Great Wagon Road rather than the interconnectedness of characters. Each book stands on its own, boasting meticulous research and excellent writing—hats off to the author! The protagonists, Tessa and Stephen, captured my heart, as did Stephen's brothers, Francis and Adam. Their admirable handling of adversity and perseverance was truly inspiring. I doubt I could have managed as well in their shoes! The thoughtful consideration given to Stephen and Tessa's marriage impressed me; it was more than a fleeting decision. Stephen's efforts to educate his younger brothers on wilderness survival showcased his foresight and leadership, earning their admiration. My only wish was for more shared moments between Stephen and Tessa after their marriage, but their separation due to urgent circumstances didn't allow that and then it ended! Nevertheless, the epilogue was a blend of joy and sorrow—a beautifully crafted tale!
I’ve read a handful of marriage of convenience stories, but they aren’t my usual trope. “Trail of Promises” sucked me in quickly. I can’t imagine living through this time and enduring the hardships of the Wagon Trail Road.
I love when a book grabs you from the beginning and doesn’t ever let up. I love how Tessa and Stephen are brought together and how their relationship develops.
Wonderful storytelling. This is inspiring, entertaining, and moving. A faith-filled, powerful read. I always enjoy an epilogue, and this one is especially satisfying.
First Line: The Great Wagon Road spanned from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, through Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina and ended in Augusta, Georgia. Series: Great Wagon Road, book 2 Genre: Christian Historical Romance Author: Susan Craft Page Count: 237
#CoverLoverBookReview received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions are 100% mine.
I whole heartedly enjoy marriage of convenience stories, and this one really puts our couple through some harrowing times. Tessa and Stephen are thrown together after danger comes to their wagon train. Stephen and his young brothers will not leave Tessa alone in this world, so they decide to become a family, if only temporary and continue on to their destination in South Carolina.
Danger awaits them in many forms and begins to shape them into a family that will stand together no matter what. Can Tessa and Stephen have a real marriage, one of love and not just duty? Their romance was a shining point throughout the story especially as they leaned on one another to see them through another day and adventure. It was a bittersweet ending.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
Trails of Promise, by Susan F. Craft, is the second book in the Great Wagon Road series. This is a Christian Historical fiction story that takes place in 1753. It is well written and easy to imagine with great characters. The main thing I enjoyed about this story is that it is a wagon train story that takes place going to South Carolina instead of westward. I find it interesting to read of the dangers of traveling in this area. I enjoy reading of the different areas and job opportunities that existed. I found the main characters to be very strong and caring. I liked the character of Stephen the most as he was responsible for the remaining members of the wagon train and did what needed to be done to protect them all. I enjoyed the wedding as described in the story as well.
I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this story, this is my honest review.
I enjoyed this story. I liked learning about a piece of history that I didn’t know much about. I also liked how the romance was a marriage of convenience story that became more. I liked how Tessa and Stephen went through some very hard things together and drew closer together and became a family. I liked seeing how their faith helped them as they went through these hard things. I also liked that author’s writing style and liked how the story was interesting and kept me wanting to read more. I hope to read more by this author in the future.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
1753 along the Great Wagon Road that ran from Philadelphia, PA to Georgia. A broken wheel delays Tessa and the wagon following them and the rest of the wagon train moves on. From there great tragedy and trials as they continue on unfold in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their recovery and perseverance as they travel on, situations and people they encounter are skillfully brought to life and greatly enrich the story. Hard to put down, great read every minute of the way. I received this book free from the author, publisher and CelebrateLit book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
This is Craft’s second book in her Great Wagon Trail series. It’s not necessary to read the first book – they all take place along the Great Wagon Trail, but characters do not seem to overlap at all.
I quickly got to know the characters, and wanted to know what happens to them. There are quite a few plot twists to make the reader gasp, and the love story doesn’t take very long to develop. Craft uses a lot of lush descriptions, and the female lead’s talent as an artist adds interest to her character.
This was an enjoyable read, and I had a hard time putting it down.
"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
Who would have thought that a broken wagon wheel would change the course of your life! Tessa Harris is on the Great Wagon Road with her father and a group of wagons, all heading for a better future, they hope. How quickly life can change.
Stephen Griffith, along with his young brothers, Francis and Adam, is also heading for a brighter future. In the blink of an eye, their life changes. It is almost impossible to imagine what those settlers went through back in 1753. I wonder how many of us would survive?
An early copy of Great Wagon Road Book 2 was received through WildHeart Books and BookFunnel. These impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.
Tessa Harris is a woman without options when she’s stranded nearly two hundred miles from her destination. Stranded with her is Stephen Griffith and his brothers and he comes to her rescue after her father is killed. Society demands they marry due to not having a chaperone so they wed without really knowing one another. Tessa and Stephen face many trials and hardships as the make their way to their new home. Tessa and Stephen’s story is captivating and draws you into their adventure and paints so graphically their personalities and surroundings. I did not want to turn the last page. Susan F. Craft takes the reader on an epic wagon train journey in Colonial America. She pleasantly surprised me with a different take on a marriage of convenience trope. (You’ll have to read it to find out more.)
I absolutely loved both Tessa and Stephen. Craft redefines what a strong woman character looks like. Tessa is brave with a fair amount of grit. Yet she’s feminine and loving of every person who crosses her path. Despite her less than ideal formative years, she maintains a lovely outlook on life.
Stephen is an endearing protector. His internal thoughts feel realistic while he projects a confident, military leader air. I especially liked the way Craft wrote his relationship with his younger brothers.
The author provided a wonderfully balanced story, flowing seamlessly between suspenseful circumstances and furthering the sweet romance.
My absolute favorite aspect of the story was Tessa’s artistic talent. As a hobbyist artist and painter myself, Craft totally nailed it! Her depiction of the artist’s drive and even her descriptions of materials and techniques were spot on. I love the way she wove this into many of Tessa’s interactions.
Fans of historical Christian romance will want to read this first book in Craft’s new series.
Romance: Squeaky clean. Brief mention of attraction and kissing. Faith: Both main characters exhibit strong faith and prayer lives.
I received an advanced copy of this book courtesy of the publisher through Celebrate Lit Tours. All opinions are my own.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was fascinating reading about the Great Wagon Road and some of the hardships travelers faced. There was a nice biblical faith thread woven through the book which was nice. The romance is quick and for it being a marriage of convenience, there isn't a long time before it is an actual love match. I think I would have preferred to not have the epilogue for this story. I usually like seeing where the characters are after a period of time, but this epilogue just made me sad. It is also 40 years later, so that is a lot later than most epilogues. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
I did not have kind thoughts about Tessa Harris' father who ended up being killed while on a wagon train in east North America! God protected Tessa in many ways but especially in sending a former British Calvary officer and his younger brothers to look out for her! A marriage of convenience seems to offer protection but other dangers present themselves! I loved the character of Stephen Griffith even if he seemed too good to be true! This is a great story that I recommend to others. I received a complimentary e-book from the author. This is my honest opinion.
Trail of Promises" by Susan F Craft is a book that isn't always a feel good read but it is a good book. There are a few scenes that tugs at the heart strings. It includes outlaws and such but it is based on history. I really liked the ending. I recommend this book if you like books about marriage of convenience. When a certain character is killed, I was sadden, ( no I don't think this is a spoiled alert because it isn't the two main characters nor the two brothers).
I received a complimentary copy from the the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
This was a profound story, and the ending was one of the most heart wrenching endings I've enjoyed in a long time! Beautiful, emotional, sad, traumatic, joyful, playful, creative, encouraging, friend building, inspiring, and filled with gospel truths that aren't added, but are interwoven as part of the storyline as if it couldn't have been written without God's truth! Very, very well done!!
I truly enjoyed this second book about the Great wagon Rd. The author has a way of developing characters that draw you right in. There isn't a slow part in this book. Each step of the story builds upon another. Wonderful, entertaining and just plain enjoyable. Lastly the epilogue is incredibly moving. Until the next book. Thank you, Susan.
This is the third in this series of their wagon train trip into adventures they would never dream be of. There is sadness, danger, love beyond measure. You will surely have a rest in you eye as they share their memories of their lives, their loves and all of their adventures. I absolutely loved this series and I believe you will too.
