Move over Goosebumps because there's a new middle grade horror author in town! Ghostly, Ghastly Tales: Frights to Tell at Night is a fantastic read. Garcia weaves tales of terror, anguish, with added humor at times. I loved the little tidbits at the end of each story that relay the folklore each story is based on and the illustrations throughout the book are gorgeous!

Zawsze powtarzam, że jedyne straszne historie jakie mogę czytać to te kierowane do dzieci i młodzieży. Największy minus tego zbioru opowiadań to to, że są one zdecydowanie zbyt krótkie. Niektóre są dosyć brutalne, szczególnie jak na coś, co jest kierowane do młodszych nastolatków.

Wow! This is a great collection of horror stories for kids. There’s a mix of monsters, ghosts, haunted things, and spooky places all inspired by stories from around the world.
My favorites from the collection were “There’s Something Wrong with Mother,” “Stitches and Pinpricks,” and “Something Walks, Something Follows” (a found footage story!).
Lastly, the illustrations were great, scary and still contemporary. It’s got a bunch of illustrations, footnotes, and a glow-in-the-dark cover.

Some of the stories are better than others. I love how unapologetically grim some of them are.

Extremely okay. This book really didn't do much to impress me. The stories were mostly tales I'd heard from Alvin Schwartz (I'm not saying that Garcia stole them...it's clear they both borrowed from the same earlier texts), but Schwartz did it so much better. If you want to hear these same stories, just read Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and its sequels.
"The Tomb of the Boy King", "Stitches and Pinpricks", and "Night Class" in particular all jumped out as tales I had heard from Schwartz (details of course, changed, but the central story was the same) when I was a kid. And his versions still scare me as an adult.
I liked the illustrations, though.

Didn’t really know what to expect, it is a kids book. So of course not scary. The book cover is really pretty and caught my eye. Plus stories I never heard of, I did enjoy that the author tells you how the story was inspired and tells you about it.

This is a somewhat different collection of scary stories than Poblocki's Tales to Keep You Up at Night, Stine's Stinetinglers, or Allen's Only If You Dare. It's not the style of the stories, which are all well-written and appropriately creepy for middle grade, but in the formatting of the book. I always struggle with reviewing short story collections; I don't necessary want to dissect every single story. I will say that I liked that the stories are grouped by types, so there are Haunted Objects, Grim Ghosts, Creature Feature, Be Careful What You Wish For, and It Goes Bump in the Night. This is great for readers, or teachers looking for tales to regale a whole class with, to help find a certain type of tale.
This is the most heavily illustrated collection of stories I have seen, and Skaffa's illustrations, as well as the plentiful use of darker backgrounds, add to the eerie feel of the book. There are plenty of spooky creatures, frightened children, and atmospheric page decorations of cobwebs, skulls, and creepy vines. Because there is so much ink involved, the book has very heavy paper and an almost graphic novel feel to it. The cover glows in the dark, although I haven't tested it yet. I do like to warn students!
Each story has a "fright level" on it, which will be on point for elementary students; middle school students will probably say that none of the stories are scary enough, because they don't involve brutal, grisly murders!
The stories have a bit of a textbook feel to them, perhaps in part because of the illustrations, but also because of the use of bold text in the stories, and a short discussion about the story's origin at the end of each tale. There are even more notes at the end of the book, covering the author's inspiration. I might have just added these to the end of the chapters instead of putting them at the end of the book. I did enjoy that there was a bibliography of different story collections which inspired the author.
This would be a great gift for a reader of scary tales, or for a favorite teacher who reads aloud to classes. Maybe it's the pink end papers with the skulls, but something about this just makes it a fancier book than many other scary short story collections.

Nie lubię się bać, wszelkiego typu horrory to nie dla mnie. Jako nastolatka często sięgałam po ten gatunek i to po takie książki naprawdę mocne i zapadające w pamięci. Teraz przechodzą mnie dreszcze przy książkach grozy dla dzieci. Jeśli lubicie ten malutki dreszczyk strachu to mam dla was świetną propozycję krótkich opowiadań autorstwa Anastacia Garcia z pięknymi ilustracjami Teo Skaffa, która ukazała się nakładem wydawnictwa Labreto. Osobiście odsłuchałam ten zbiór opowiadań na Legimi, świetnie jest nagrany, ale książkę z przyjemnością postawię na półce, ponieważ okładka świeci się w ciemności.
W książce znajdziecie 22 opowiadania, które nie są historiami, przy których można zasnąć, są to historie, przy których będziecie się bali, że coś wyjdzie spod łóżka. Autorka zebrała naprawdę różne legendy, historie i bajania, które przekształciła w swoją własną wizję.
Każde opowiadanie ma swój specyficzny klimat, znajdziemy tu szkołę, która tylko z pozoru wygląda na opuszczoną, są też nawiedzone domy, fortepian grający sam z siebie i włosy, które żyją. Audiobooka słuchało mi się bardzo przyjemnie. Zajrzałam również na e-book, bo na okładce była informacja o ilustracjach więc chciałam je obejrzeć i powiem Wam, że są bardzo klimatyczne - trzy z nich możecie zobaczyć w tym poście jeśli przesuniecie zdjęcia.
Jest to w moim odczuciu dość delikatna groza więc w sam raz będzie dla dzieci i młodzieży, a nawet i starszych czytelników, tych bardziej strachliwych. Każda opowieść była dla mnie ciekawa. Co ważniejsze te historie niosą w sobie ważne przesłanie i lekcje. Warto po każdym opowiadaniu zatrzymać się na chwilę i dobrze je przemyśleć.

I confess that when I was reading these stories in bright sunlight, I thought, "Meh, regular middle grade spooky stories." However, when I was finishing the book, it was later and dark. Now I'm thinking that these are really scary stories for kids. I also feel like the book started safer and got scarier as it progressed. Yikes! Don't get me wrong, I love scary stories, but this book would have been a problem for me when I was a young kid.
Also, the reason why I couldn't give it five stars is because of some of the writing choices. I love the short story format and there are lots of stories that I love that end with a hanging feeling and leave the reader with a guess about what's happening. Sometimes this is really successful and lets the reader's imagination fill in the spaces. A good number of the stories in this book did not execute the ending well.
Mostly, though, there were a lot of great, bite size stories with samples of scary creatures from all over the world. If you have a kid who likes to be scared, this is a good selection.

This book is a great introduction to the world of horror for any tween- or even adults just appreciative of a creepy story. I love how much thought was put into each story and that the author took the time to give the background on her inspiration behind each frightening tale. All of the short stories are wonderful and will be something to read over and over in different orders for different moods. These short stories have great depth and have beautiful, terrifying illustrations to help further the imagination while reading.

These stories are perfect for younger readers who are looking for horror! I could not stop reading. There are a bunch of short stories to read through, and at the end of each, there is information about where the story originated, and nuances to the tale.

Ghostly, Ghastly Tales is the perfect scary stories book for kids AND adults! The illustrations are so creepy and haunting. (Um, Hello, and the GLOW IN THE DARK COVER?!) My favorite stories are “It Comes From The Deep”, “Something Is Wrong With Mother”, and “The Thing That Isn’t There”. Definitely a new favorite! Highly recommend this in your horror collection!

Jeśli szukacie czegoś w straszniejszym klimacie, co przeczytacie podczas jednego wieczoru to jak najbardziej polecam. Nie nastawiałabym się na niewiadomo co, ale takie o do poduszki jest idealne. Fajne jest to, że po każdej historii dostajemy wyjaśnienie skąd się wziął pomysł, a same opowieści są inspirowane wierzeniami ludzi z różnych zakątków świata.
Jeśli szukacie czegoś w straszniejszym klimacie, co przeczytacie podczas jednego wieczoru to jak najbardziej polecam. Nie nastawiałabym się na niewiadomo co, ale takie o do poduszki jest idealne. I liked these stories quite a bit, and every one was just long enough for a bite. You could read one in between tasks. The cover glows in the dark, which is cool. There wasn't one story I didn't like in this, plus the artwork is A1. A great book.

A very good book. I'm a fan of spooky stories from around the world, I love creepy stories, etc. This book didn't scare me even once, but I think it will be great for anyone who wants to enter the world of horror and scary stories.

This book has my whole heart. From the binding (it glows in the dark!!!) to the art to the stories, I couldn't get enough. Luckily there's a second one! LOL I loved the diversity of the storytelling. I loved the fright level ratings so kids know what they're getting into. I loved everything about this. It's honestly such a perfect book for younger kids looking to dabble in horror.
