Poorly Written

A look at this book's table of contents suggested it would have decent organization. Unfortunately, when you actually get into the chapters themselves, the topics within each do not flow logically from one into the next. The author jumps around a bit. There's a lot of awkward phrasing that at times had me scratching my head as to what precisely the author meant. Never a good thing when you're trying to communicate! The book is very dry. I don’t get a sense of the author’s voice or any level of authenticity. I honestly feel that you could probably get better information from retirement blogs or the Social Security Administration or CMS. I could be wrong, but my gut instinct tells me that AI wrote this with little input from the author. While I appreciate that AI is a tool, at this point, it still needs the human touch to make writing that is relatable and even readable by other humans! The book was nearly laughable in places. In the introductory chapters, the author makes the rather ridiculous statement that Social Security can be used to pay off mortgages or buy a new car. Most people I know who only have Social Security, with no other retirement income, live rather poverty-stricken and constrained lives with very little income to spend beyond covering general life expenses ... and sometimes not even that! Plenty of books exist out there about how to take the best advantage of the Social Security system we've all paid into if we've worked; I recommend finding a better book than this one.

I received a free digital copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Good guide, but some outdated information

I think this guide is helpful when needing to understand the complexity of social security.
However, the claims that SSDI takes 3-6 months is false. Maybe that’s what they tell you when you apply, but most people wait a year or more for a decision, causing them undue stress and financial hardship. So, that is something that should be included as the reality of dealing with social security.

This is a basic overview of applying for social security benefits, whether it be retirement, survivor, SSI, or SSDI…but it just doesn’t show the reality of the process and stress they cause when someone is waiting for help.

I learned so much about Social Security.

I was unaware of Social Security regulations until I read this book. It was highly informative and I feel confident helping my elderly family navigate this territory.

I found the book helpful in helping me decide when to take my social security. Here’s hoping the program has not been gutted. The book provided pros and cons about when and why to take social security at different times.
