CELESTE
Peace is hard to come by, but in the place where my uncle is buried, I find unexpected solace. Under the steady, constant downpour, an umbrella covered me as I admired the beautifully saturated greenery and the intricately sculpted stone structures.
Reality slipped away from me and I found myself aching to come here, until he let me in on the secret.
Ghosts roamed the paths every single night, with nowhere to go and no one to be with.
And that alone was enough for me to run and never look back.

**

CAIUS
The concept of all of this doesn’t sit well with most people. One person may find this place catastrophic—sinful, even—but there will always be someone else who would pay good money to be here.
Rainfall covered my vision as I stood afar, watching the only person I forbid to stay here.

Years in life with her will never compare to eternity in death alone.

Well, you know the whole book I repeatedly asked myself "Why?"… And now I know. And I want to unknow it. Please take it back.

This book is so full of grief and loss… And than even more of it.

Hard Tobac, to be honest.

Please read the Trigger Warnings and take good care of yourself.

I just leave here the pros and cons imo:

+ The place is really special and it sucks you right up

+ Celeste is such a sweet person and she deserves everything Caius gave her

+ Caius is desperately in love and I always fall for this kind of fictional guys

- I need an explanation for all of this, something more than "that's what it always has been"

- I don't really buy this kind of insta love where you haven't even spoken to another

- I don't get Amadeus and it don't felt really thought true - he was just needed for this special moment and he could be so much more than just that - somebody who could talk this through too with Celeste maybe?

- Celest was completely unreasonable in that special moment - even Amadeus mentioned it because it was so obvious - I mean who thinks you know better than people who know each other their whole life?

Thank you for trusting me with an ARC.

My HEART.

I went into this one completely blind but beyond intrigued, and I'm so glad I did.

This was beautiful, somewhat bleak, and definitely not a traditional happily ever after. Without giving too much away, this subject matter is not easily broached, and yet Everest did a really lovely job of telling this story.

Between is short, sitting between the length of a novella and a novel. I do normally find myself craving more of the story I'm reading, but I believe this was the perfect amount of pages to tell this story. I recommend if you are looking for something quick, and a little bit outside of the typical romance realm.

Thank you again to the author for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

DNF at 52%. It doesn’t get more disrespectful than forcing someone to take communion as a praise kink. Absolutely bottom of the barrel.

Up until DNFing, this was on track to be a 2.5-generous 3 ⭐️. These were my notes pre-DNF (I had a lot to say 💀): The blurb gives you nothing. You’re going in blind. I had no clue that I was going to read a book about purgatory, which I already know next to nothing about and whatever this is… is definitely not it… I honestly would have passed on this one had I known, that’s just me. I’m going to try to not let that affect my rating too much… but the blurb. THE BLURB.

I do like the authors writing style so far, for the most part. You can feel the emotion and I think that’s a hard thing to accomplish. The book feels depressy. The rain, the gloom, the sadness in the first few chapters, it’ll get you down. I recommend being in a good place when you read this because it might knock you down a peg if you feel the feels strongly. Very captivating and heavy at times, which is perfect for the storyline. Well done there.

As a whole, the idea of the book is pretty original. I haven’t come across one like it. But… there is a majorly overdone scenario where the FMC is put up in a lavish bedroom with a luxurious bathroom, complete with a new gown on the bed and some strange girl to dress and pamper her. And in this case, it comes out of left field. There is no build up, no indication that Caius has this type of lifestyle besides having a big house and no indication that Celeste is a mere peasant in need of lavishing.

There was a lot of statements about things being obvious… with no explanation… and they weren’t really obvious to me. I couldn’t even gather what the obvious things were with context clues. They were not obvious, point blank.
Examples:
- “Mel nodded with a subtle grin on her lips, but it wasn’t subtle enough to hide what she was really thinking.” 🤔 I wanna know! What was she really thinking?!
- “And the underlying meaning of him putting me in this bathroom instead of Mel’s did not slip away from me.” 👀 Do tell. What’s the underlying meaning? It slipped away from me. Just two examples, but this happened A LOT. No elaboration. No leading up to the statements and no follow up. Maybe I’m just nosy but I felt the same feeling as when I read those posts on social media like “I’m so mad rn” and when someone asks what’s wrong they’re like “get out my bizniss”. 🫠

Anyways, this was a no. If somebody shoves the symbolic body of Christ cracker in my mouth, then I’m flipping pews over… like Jesus flipped those tables.

I requested this book and wanted to love it. I feel bad when I request and it’s a flop for me. This one crossed a line for what reason? And I’m not even catholic.

I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Between: What an interesting, unique story! I haven’t read anything like this before and it was a really fascinating experience!! The writing was engaging, and I wanted to keep reading to find out where there was leading. I wish we received a little more back story on the “between” (don’t want to leave spoilers) but I still really enjoyed the story and the characters! I felt the love and passion!

honestly, s. everest deserves so much more recognition as an indie author. her writing is beautifully descriptive & vividly detailed that it pulls you right into the book along with your emotions. thinkin about it, i’ve cried to every single book written by this author 😂 one minute, i was crying my eyes out from sadness then the next minute i was crying my eyes out from happiness. “between” is a roller coaster of emotions & even had me sitting & pondering about a lot of things at one point. the author know’s how to write a book, punch you in the face with it & then sooth it out & tell you everything is okay. between is a haunting but beautiful tragedy. not your traditional happily ever after but i wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. the story starts with caius & celeste; weaving it’s way through a mixture of life, death, grief, love & a sprinkle of paranormal ✨ make sure to heed trigger warnings as some subject may be heavier for others. sev has become one of my favorite auto-buy authors but i’m truly honored to have received between as my very first physical arc 🖤 between releases on feb 14 & while it’s a haunting & short read - it’ll leave you emotional & pondering about the between.

For such a short story, it really packs a punch. I really enjoyed reading this book! The author gets you hooked into the story right away with the mysterious man and the alluring description of the "cemetery". You can really connect with the main female characters grief, confusion and thought process. I love that Celeste, the main female character, is not overly dramatic but instead her reactions to some of the secrets are a very natural and valid response. On the trigger page in the beginning of the book, the author states the book "does not end in a tradional Happily Every After". BUT. I actually am really really happy with the ending! Is it traditional? In our era, no. Some may not be happy with it, but I feel like if it were any other way, it would make the book well…., less. Give this a go!

Always the fan of this author and this new novel did not disappoint.
Between is a gorgeous paranormal romance with a 'not-so-happy ending'. There are darker themes so please check triggers.
We meet Celeste upon the death of her uncle, with her attendance at his funeral.
We meet Caius as the caretaker of the estate to which Celeste's uncle's ashes are held.
What comes next is a gorgeous exploration of life, death and everything in between.
Some parts felt insta-worthy in terms of the two MC's connection, so for that reason I would have loved 100 or so pages more.
But all in all, a really beautiful read!

⚠️ALWAYS CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS⚠️

The cover and title to this book gives nothing away. I had no clue what I was getting into but for some reason was drawn to it. This book starts off on a sad note begin with. A funeral while it is rainy and foggy. Everest definitely knows how to play with your emotions and get you feeling all types of ways while reading this book. Books that involve religion aren’t really my thing. But this one was so good. The main talk is purgatory, heaven and hell but there is no talk of getting you to believe something over the other. It’s a quick read with only 194 pages but every page had me in a choke hold waiting to see what would happen next. Celeste and Caius deserve the world and endless happiness.

It is quite original as an idea and story. I really enjoyed the narrative and the way the author manages to pass on the feelings and experiences of the characters involved skillfully. They experience intense emotion, both positive and negative, changing their original position and beliefs. The story reaches an unexpected, yet strangely very fitting conclusion.
I enjoyed it...perhaps I would have liked it to have been a little longer and explore some of the rest of the characters a bit more.

We are told “this isn’t a cemetery,” but it is for this reader as I’m calling my time of death.

Up to this point in the book, the concept had a lot of potential. However, the execution didn’t work for me. Everything from the character relationships, plot and world building felt rushed and disconnected. I think that this story would be best if it was written as a full-length novel to allow more breathing room for showing, not telling.

DNF at 35%.

I really enjoyed the characters and the love they shared.

This was a really short book I feel like it would have been more enjoyable if the writer expanded more on the world building and the "why" of it all. There is so much potential for this story and I really liked it but there were some holes and questions left unanswered. I feel like it could really be expanded upon and be a 5 star paranormal romance.

There is a lot of mystery throughout this, which I think made me want to keep reading to see what happens and to get more answers. I think the overall idea came across as different and unique, and the ending might not be the HEA everyone expects or wants. Plot twist though… I didn't get the answers, and it ended with me having more questions!

Whilst I am not opposed to the whole insta love/attraction trope, it did miss any sort of build up or back up to the connection. There is no obsessive need seen by the reader… no wanting to know all about each other, no watching/following her, no effort to really get to know and be around the person. But there is time progression, there are days in between each meeting and the author just skips those so you don't learn anything about the character and their life at all.

It felt fairly stoic and flat in terms of romance, I think with instant infatuation you need to feel it and a few comments from the MMC about their souls together did not do it enough for me. I think this is fairly common trope, so it needs to be really felt and done well to make an impact.

After reading some reviews, I was expecting more feels with this one. It has some dark themes with grief, but it didn't hit has hard as I wanted. The beginning it started off well, but then as soon as there was more of a interest between the two characters it petered off a little. The author writes from both POV, so as a reader you anticipate invading every thought, emotion and feeling they experienced both in terms of the love interest but also the grief too. Further a long, there is a part where the FMC mentions different chapters in her grief but she doesn't talk much about it. She also seems latched on to the idea of why her uncle chose purgatory too.

The idea of purgatory made the plot interesting, and it is what made me want to give this a read, but it is still a little confusing as it seems far off what we assume it would be.

Overall I thought it was an interesting read, and I liked how descriptive the author was with their writing. It made it easy to imagine the scenes as there were occurring.

“There was dark green ivy twisted around the edges, snaking its way through the bars and reaching the top.”

Celeste is brokenhearted. Her uncle has passed, and as we begin the story, we are at his memorial. Only close family members, one couple who were his close friends, and the officiant are attending. It’s raining, it’s overshadowed by intense grief, and Celeste is beside herself. Caius sees her for the first time at this funeral, beautiful in her grief, gazing at her from deep within the shadows.

“Do not let this be anything more than a piece of your essence. It might define you in your own eyes, but it will never define you with me.”

Per the author’s opening statement, this is not the typical HEA. I was not turned off by her trigger warnings, nor by the atmospheric world it’s set in. You might think that a cemetery is not your perfect place for a romance, but this isn’t your typical cemetery. Both of our main characters are filled with life, and all they want from one another is the love that they are unwilling to speak aloud. As we move through the discovery of the world of Caius, we learn that there is more to the cemetery, to the people who choose to be buried here, and how life can go on. This was a very fast read at less than 200 hundred pages, I wanted more of this story, but I am so happy for this couple who do, in the end, find their HEA.

"Between" took me on a whirlwind of emotions, spinning my head in all the right ways. Everest's phenomenal writing, descriptive and poised, made it impossible to put down; I devoured it in one sitting. The emotional depth of the narrative, particularly Celeste's mourning for her beloved uncle, resonated deeply with me, bringing tears to my eyes at times.

The story unfolds with suspense, challenging beliefs and prompting contemplation. Everest weaves an intelligently written tale that keeps you hooked from start to finish. The beautiful romance between Celeste and Caius adds another layer to the narrative, their connection portrayed as both breathtaking and tragic. While some may view their relationship as unrealistic, for me, it felt like a "love at first sight" scenario.

"Between" quickly ascended to the top of my favorite reads this year, thanks to its captivating storytelling and the intricate dance between love, grief, and contemplation. A word of caution, though – the book carries trigger warnings, so be sure to check those before diving in.

"But that's all his words were anymore. An echo."

This was a uniquely engaging read. The novel begins with a funeral where readers get to really dive into the authors beautifully executed imagery. The authors technique to paint a picture carries throughout. I was taken to the world of ominous and dark purgatory with ghostly vibes. I loved the way the love story played out. It was both angsty and satisfying.

I commend the ability to draw out the love story while still maintaining the reality of emotions in the wake of losing a loved one. I was weak and utterly devoted to Caius's Love and devotion. there was a bit of a rush with how quick the characters fell in love with one another, but this didn't take away from the premise. The ending left me on edge but in a way, I felt it was much needed. the story began on tragedy and the ending followed the theme as the novel carried it without. overall, I think this was a beautiful read that overall add some variety and a change up from the rather traditional HEA storyline.

This is not typically something I would have chosen to read or be interested in but Everest had me drawn in at the very beginning of the story. She definitely has a way of hooking and reeling you in. She left enough mystery to keep me reading and wanting to figure out what was gonna happen. She also describes things in a way that make you feel like you are right in the middle of the setting and can see yourself there. I gave this book 4 stars because even though I loved her descriptive writing of the surrounding I feel like she could have gave us a little more background of the characters or some more depth in the story. I feel like we just jumped right into a relationship and then the book was over. I would only recommend this for adult readers. It contains sensitive subjects such as drinking, explicit sexual scenes, religious views, and graphic violence.

This book put me through the fucking ringer. The emotional rollercoaster I was on was so intense. I can't even think of an emotion I wasn't feeling. Cai and Celeste were meant for each other. I feel that in my bones. Like I NEEDED them to be it for each other.

The religious aspect was so intriguing. I loved the struggle and difference of opinion of purgatory to each of the characters.

This book felt a bit unfinished and left me with questions that will remained unanswered but I think that was the point. A highly emotional book with a heavy topic that is meant to always have you wondering.

I was so scared too because the author warns us the ending in non-conventionally happy so I wasn't sure what to expect but I get it. It hurt that thats how it ended but it still made for a peaceful conclusion.

This will be added to my collection of books that will live rent free in my head.

Between beckons readers into a realm where the veil between life and death is as fragile as raindrops on a tombstone. Celeste, seeking solace at her uncle's burial site, stumbles upon a secret: the graveyard is haunted by ghosts every night. The steady downpour becomes a metaphor for the emotional deluge that envelops her.

In this hauntingly beautiful tale, Celeste's yearning to escape reality and embrace the spectral presence of the afterlife echoes a poignant theme of seeking solace in the face of life's storms. The ghostly apparitions, trapped and aimless, become a reflection of her own desire to run away and leave everything behind.

Caius, grappling with the conflict between the living and the dead, personifies the dichotomy inherent in the graveyard's existence. The concept, perceived as catastrophic by some, holds an inexplicable allure for others. As the rain blurs the boundaries between the seen and the unseen, Celeste and Caius find themselves caught between two worlds.

The narrative, shrouded in the metaphorical rainfall, explores the delicate dance between life and death, capturing the essence of longing and eternity. The graveyard becomes a symbolic space where emotions, like raindrops, fall and linger, leaving an indelible mark on the characters.

Between invites readers to contemplate the transient nature of existence, the beauty in seeking refuge amidst the downpour, and the eternal dance between life and death.

Eerily stunning story of life, death and everything in between. Between toes the lie of morally gray when it comes to playing God when the FMC Celeste discovers purgatory in her own backyard on earth. It approaches the age old question of what comes after death. With a slight Gothic theme and a bit of romance thrown in there S. Everest does an exquisite job at provoking the reader to think as well as enjoy the story. I enjoyed the relationship between Celeste and Caius, however I felt like it was a bit of an insta love which I didn't like, maybe due to lack of length of book. So I would of loved for more of a deeper development with the two of them. For being a shorter read I really enjoyed it and I blew through it fast as it had me engrossed from the beginning!

Let me start by saying this author has a ton of potential. The writing is decent for a newer author and the idea of the story was different/fresh.

BUT I have issues.

Lackluster character development, zero connection between love interests (not even enough to feel like it’s instalove), the “between” the story is centered around wasn’t fleshed out enough to feel like it even makes sense and the ending was a bit over the top, a bit predictable and left too much hanging in the balance.

It starts strong with great intrigue but getting to about 70 pages in, I realized I wouldn’t be getting more than I had already and was just hurrying to get the book over with.

So unfortunately it’s a no for me. It’s novella length so it was easy enough to finish. If this book was ever to be reworked with more character driven aspects and world building, I think it could be a solid book.

I went in completely blind bc I saw Kayla rave about this author on her page. And I couldn’t thank her more for doing so. I’m not sure I ever highlighted so much in a book, I will def go back and annotate my physical copy.
This quote describes this story and it’s writing perfectly. S Everest her writing is immaculate, captivating and the mystery addictive.

Throughout I realized that everything is connected and has a double meaning - this story and it’s characters makes you wonder, what lies in between?

This novella is perfect for this season, so pls listen to me for a second and read it, go in blind and thank me later. Bc I will def not stop raving about this until you do!

Ps. do check the TW on this book before you dive in.

Hauntingly beautiful! “Between” spins a heart breaking tale of life, loss and love. With two protagonists that you can’t help but fall in love with! It’s eerie, gothic and unsettling in a way that makes you think. This story breaks all the traditional romance formulas, it throws you right in the action and holds you there for days after you read the last line. The writing is truly remarkable.

“I needed him in the valleys of my soul and in the peaks of my spirit”

“my name on your lips reduces the rest of this world to nothing, Celeste.”

This story contains very dark elements, please check the trigger warning on the author’s website.

I'm sobbing. It's very hard for me to cry because of a book. I don't think I've cried as hard as I did for this book.
This book follows Celeste who is finding her way through the grief of her uncle and Caius who would do anything for her.

I loved the way this book was written but had such a beautiful flow of love within the grief. I can't find the words to express how amazing this book was. Although this book is only 195 pages, it feels like an eternity was witnessed between the pages.

It is such a bittersweet book that once again makes you cry but also makes your heart swell. We all need a Caius in our life. I know I do.

Let me start by saying that I read a lot and this has to be one of the most unique stories I’ve ever read. It was well written, and went along at a comfortable pace. It reads like a cozy romance, with gothic hints. It was beautiful and intriguing and even though it was a little slower, I didn’t want to put it down.

For the tone the author uses the spice sort of surprised me… in a good way. I’ve been to church before but damn who knew you could make communion sexy.

It was a shorter read and a lot of the “action” happens right towards the end, but my god the ending! Not at all what I was expecting.

I received an ARC of this book; thoughts are my own.

This is one of the most intriguing and exceptionally details books I've read. The overall world building, the characters, even the smaller aspects of this book were vividly detailed. It's was so well written I felt like I was seeing this book play out as I was turning the pages.

The characters are relatable, especially the FMC in how she processes her grief. The MMC comes off indifferent but he is compassionate and self assured.

This was a short read and is definitely worth it, especially if you like otherworldly books with dark twists and an ending that isn't considered a traditional happily ever after.

Even though I was concerned about the ending, I still was interested in the storyline. It’s a beautiful story about 2 people accepting everything about each other, even the stuff they didn’t like.

I have never read this author before but I will be checking out this author’s work.

Don’t let the warning of it not being a traditional HEA keep you from reading. I was extreme skeptical because I firmly believe for it to be classified as romance it needs a HEA. This does have a HEA as far as I’m concerned.

It’s a quick read but really well written.

This whole book and its story had a really relaxing yet gripping atmosphere that captured me from the beginning to the end.

While reading the book I could really feel the grief of Celeste and the heaviness of grief through the constant mist and rain.

Even though this book feels incredibly short it really captures the mood and atmosphere of everything so well that you will feel like you are right there yourself!

My thoughts 💭
This is a sweet paranormal romance of an unlikely couple. I honestly had no idea what I was beginning, but was intrigued early on. I enjoyed the story overall. I liked how well the author was so detailed and helped me build the world of Celeste and Caius. Celeste was very relatable- through her feelings of grief & unknowing, she made the story. This is definitely the first of its kind for me. Being one that tends to read novels, this short story was definitely worth the read. I was provided an ARC and so grateful for that.
