After fighting off the shapeshifting Misaligned, Terri, Euclid and Quay have been settling into their new post-apocalyptic life–and then their ally Dirk and his father Archibald seek their help facing a new and greater threat to the world. The trio has to find an institute from before the apocalypse and its residents, the only people who might hold the key to stopping the next calamity. As they undertake a dangerous journey to the ruins of New York City, they encounter old enemies, the oddly familiar ruler of Providence, and strange creatures who offer each of them a dangerously tempting deal.
1) Characters. I like our three main protagonists, and also like that they're not perfect -- but they have some good ideas, try hard to make ok decisions, and are fundamentally caring and decent people even if they each have struggles. Dirk is always hilarious and fantastic, and new character London is one of my favorites. Also: what, a *second* nonbinary significant character in a book that already has one? Shocking. And a very different type of Ace representation too!
2) I am a huge geek about almost anything I know, so the thing that made me absolutely delight in this book and say "That's SO COOL" about a dozen times were the poetry and history easter eggs. "Wait, I know that poem....uh what it's definitely different, now I have to look it up." I gather at least one other person who has read book 2 agrees with me!
3) The sex farce part. I laughed so much when everyone was having to run around naked and fight bad guys/hide in closets.
4) The scary bits. DO THEY MAKE IT. There are some times when it's touch and go! But we can assure you, the Dog Does Not Die, in this or any other book of the set. I apologize if you don't like that kind of spoilers -- personally I'm always glad to know up front.
5) I really liked that in the first book, our trio has to get comfortable enough with their surprise magic powers to use them to save the day. I really like that in this book, they then make a clever plan to save the day by not using what they've learned....
Just as funny as the first book, or more so, but doing considerably more complicated and interesting things in the writing!
Another delightful romp through the Sex Bunker Apocalypse world! It's a delight to spend more time with our three protagonists, now finally (mostly) getting to travel together. There's a lot of fun notes about going through the northeast that I think will appeal to the geographically minded. And now we have Dirk as a fourth member, who brings a fun himbo energy to the pack!
If you liked the first, you'll probably enjoy this one too. There's a particular section towards the middle involving a POTENT mix of sexy times and dread in the reader that was effectively kept my attention the whole time--lots of creative sex scenes, but also as a reader I was screaming "stop playing with those ropes you're in danger even though you don't know it!!!"
Things end on a bit of a cliffhanger, the ending is chaotic, but it's a second book in a trilogy after all. Will be reading the third at some point to see how they handle the next steps in trying to protect the world!
So I love the first book in this series as well, but this is where things take a more complicated turn, and where we also see a little bit more of how the world has changed. It's really awesome to see the characters taking their various shows on the road and having more complex plots. Very cool!
