A veteran journalist conducts a tour of Russia, from Moscow to Vladivostok, talking with people in all walks of life and examining families, organizations, and institutions struggling to thrive in the new, frequently chaotic post-Soviet world. 20,000 first printing.
This was so good! What a shame that it’s not better known, and I think out of print. Really excellent social look at various aspects of Russian life in the immediate post-Soviet years. Randolph was a Washington Post correspondent living in Moscow with her husband while he did something or other. She really gives a revealing glimpse into intimate parts of life, including public health and medicine, views on sexuality and homosexuality, the influx of world religions into Russia, including the scammier ones, a murder trial, the business of ballet, among lots of others. Beautifully written too.
