WHAT HAPPENED TO LORI - THE COMPLETE EPIC Is she dead? Or is it much worse?
This contains Part 1 and Part 2 of the massive double novel. If you are a more sensitive (or adventurous) reader, this handy scale rates specific categories from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) to give you some idea if this is your kind of book.
WHAT HAPPENED TO LORI Bad Language - 7 Scary - 6 Violent - 8 Funny - 5 Sexy - 7 Crossovers - Includes characters from the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, the Jack Daniels thrillers, the Codename: Chandler series, and the Timecaster series.
Joe Konrath has written over twenty novels in the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series. They do not have to be read chronologically to be enjoyed, but the order is: Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Shot of Tequila, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry Bomb, Dead On My Feet, Serial Killers Uncut (with Blake Crouch), Shaken, Stirred (with Blake Crouch), Dying Breath, Everybody Dies, Rum Runner, Last Call, White Russian, Shot Girl, Chaser, Old Fashioned, Bite Force, and Witch Brew. More coming soon.
Wow, that's a lot of Jack.
If you like your thrillers on the dark side, check out the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, which includes the books The List, Origin, Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, Haunted House, Webcam, Disturb, What Happened To Lori, The Nine, Second Coming, and Close Your Eyes.
Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.
He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.
With Ann Voss Peterson he wrote the Codename: Chandler thrillers, including Flee, Spree, Three, Hit, Exposed, Naughty, Fix (with F. Paul Wilson), Rescue, and Free.
And, finally, he writes erotica under the pen name Melinda DuChamp, also with Ann Voss Peterson. Those books are probably too spicy for you, so only the brave and bold should seek them out.
Joe writes a lot. You should probably read everything.
I loved this first book in a duology by author Konrath. I have read many, if not most, of Konrath's books and love his warped sense of humor and his great sense of timing.
This was an unusual book (and he warns readers of that right up front). I'm not going to give a synopsis of the book because I think readers need to go into this tale unprepared. I was glad that I read this after the second half was already published because as Konrath warns, this book ends in quite a cliffhanger and I don't like waiting - I want instant gratification.
This is a thriller, a horror book, a character study, and just all-out good fun. I'm now off to read Book 2 - REVELATIONS of WHAT HAPPENED TO LORI.
BOOK 2: REVELATIONS
Loved this weird, beyond twisted duology
I loved the first book in this duology but this second book is totally awesome. Konrath is a favorite author of mine. Some of his books scare the s**t out of me and some have me laughing hysterically - this book did both.
I went into this reading experience knowing nothing about the books, reading them because of a review left by a Goodreads reader. I am glad I did this. You get the maximum impact by being surprised. Don't read any detailed synopses or any spoilers.
This has detailed characters, beyond twisty plot turns and a thought provoking finish. I also loved the author notes.
I read through the first book in on Sunday. I was so deep into J.A. Konrath's world that I couldn't pull myself out. Just a little bit into part two is when I went to bed, after an internal debate on whether smashing my phone to kill the Kindle app would make me feel better. As you see... phone is intact. It's because I was so mad that I couldn't sleep, and I had to keep reading. I'm happy I made it past the hurdle. I hope you will, too. It went somewhere I did not expect, and I don't think I would have picked up the book if it was in the synopsis, BUT... I loved it. When I meet Mr. K, , I may kick him in the shin for that hurdle, but then I'll thank him for it all.
I really liked the first book but the second book was too far fetched for me to believe. Got into Sci Fi but it seemed like every scary story you ever heard as a child around a campfire. I did not finish.
What a ride! I enjoy his books immensely but this one was just kind of crazy. Without any spoilers, there are lots of twists and just when you think you've figured something out the story goes in a whole new direction. Buckle in for this one folks and definitely keep going to the end (even when he says you can stop)
A fascinating story told in two parts. The first part is a mystery that pulls you into Fabler's life centering around his missing wife Lori, her brother Grim, & Presley who Fabler hires and trains for something very unclear. Did Fabler murder his wife or is he just bat shit crazy? Presley needs to find out. Konrath weaves an interesting tale which uses textual symbol (an interesting concept) & there are author notes that give you clues to what may be going on and a continuation into the second story which turns sci-fi. I didn't figure it out even with a lot of clues to what happened to Lori. The ending was cool because it had a number of different epilogues. Quite a few characters from the other Konrath Dark Thriller Collective make an appearance too. I think the book could've been a lot shorter and a lot less information in the second half but still a good story.
I really liked the Book 1 Genesis. I couldn’t figure out where this was going but I need to know What happened to Lori?
Then came book 2 and I started to doubt my initial feelings on this book.
Book 2 took some crazy, weird turns and got more and more far fetched, but as it went on I began to enjoy it again. I just didn’t love the first 1/3 of book 2, but again - glad I hung in there. It was worth. I’d call this more sci-fi than horror but it was a good read.
Also I loved all the author’s notes throughout and enjoyed the way it was written. I really liked how you could read what the person was thinking
I really loved this one. I am a big fan of Konrath, this one seemed a little different to me. It had a huge mix of things going on, hardly any of which I was expecting, as I was looking for a horror book! There is some horror, lots of humor in the midst of trying to stay alive and sane with so much going on, which I love! Also I loved or hated the characters, which is always important in a story to me. The author breaks in with updates from time to time, which worked well for this story. There is some sci-fi, which I am not a huge fan of but it worked for me here. So much to unpack but I don't want to ruin it so....I highly recommend this one! Enjoy!
The first book (#book1) is a mystery thriller. Fabler's wife Lori is missing. Although Fabler insists she is still alive somewhere, her brother Grim believes Fabler has murdered her and is obsessed with proving this.
Fabler investigates a long list of missing redheads and hires Presley, an ex soldier, who has no idea what the actual job with Fabler is, to train. Presley thinks Fabler is insane but desperately needs money and so goes along with his rigorous training and routines preparing for something(?).
I really enjoyed #book1. It builds the foundations to leap straight into #book2 which is a whole new ballgame!! If you want to know what happened to Lori you have to read on to book 2.
#book2 is batshit crazy. I love it! The subtle humour running through it is so clever. How the author manages to bounce the characters off one another is a refreshing addition to what otherwise may be quite a dark read.
The characters develop quickly into deep layered, interesting characters. I enjoyed Fabler's relationship with Jake, and how he reacts to Jakes Aspergers presentations. Their conversations are great.
The variety of different elements and characters in this story is mind-blowing!! The Watcher, Mu, Kadir, Sinatra and Bub, I love them all. Some parts are absolutely gross as hell, others have you completely stumped) there's a pun there).
Overall an epic read that leaves you wanting more and feeling as if your brain has actually sampled some of The Watchers happy drug.
Just not for me. I got through the first part of this book and then the beginning of the next. The mystery was great but I couldn't connect with the characters. The way it was written was just not to my taste.
I think for people who don't mind that writing, the plot and mystery was very well done and kept me going through most of the book, although I did consider stopping sooner--I really was looking for the twist. However, most of the "twists" seemed rather expected based on what I had been set up to believe.
I am clearly not the audience for this book and the rating is for me, to remember I read part of this series and didn't enjoy it.
This. Is. One. Wild. Ride. I like to think of myself as pretty astute when it comes to the books I read. I can follow the plots of most books and generally at least come pretty close to figuring out a resolution (most times). Twists and turns delight me, and a unique ending or unexpected twist makes the experience even better. I had no idea what was going on for most of the time during this story. It takes some fortitude to stick with it and work through the labyrinth of plot angles, but it's worth it at the end. J. A. Konrath does it again!
Imaginative twisting plot delivered by storytelling excellence
I liked the challenge to discover anything on Lori. I had so many ideas about her absence, they were removed one by one. Fabler himself was a mystery until he wasn’t. Fiction was better than ever. I recommend this book to any who tolerate even a little science in a story and to anyone who loves twists in the plot. I give it Five stars because I cannot think of anything that might improve it
This book was just nuts, reading What Happened to Lori, I was reminded of the feeling when as a grade schooler you were on one of those old metal Merry go Rounds circa 1950-1985 and some big kids would come and spin it as fast as they could to see how many of the little kids would go flying off. Joe, you sir nearly flung me right off the dang ride. But I hung on, and though my brain my never be the same I remain firmly in your camp.
A lot of “wtf” moments, yet very entertaining. As a fan of this author, I found this to be one of his outrageous, yet entertaining books…and somehow, as questioned in the author notes, I was (kinda…well not really but to not give spoilers, i would say i was lol) able to guess what happened to Lori before the second half of the book. A lot of fun and I was happy with the ending (again, kinda lol…read it and you will understand)
I usually like this author but not this time so much. The story line was good but the multiple injections of thought between chapters was irritating. The romance portions were silly, sloppy love story bad. Then the last portion should have been labeled My Greatness explained. When I got through the book I was done with the narcissism. I could have bitch slapped all the characters except the giant sloth.
I don't know how to even begin reviewing this book. It was certainly interesting, entertaining, weird, baffling and some other words I could add. But the good news is that if you still have some doubts about anything in the book, be sure to read Author's Note #11. All will be explained. Because this is a Konrath book, I could never have given up on it, and I rate it 4.7 stars.
I like the way this book threads throughout its characters in the story. It's a different way of looking at the moment.. to give e one a moment's pause, to gather yourself and the world who is this happening to..what and why.. it gets the reader into the storyline more.
I had to stop reading because the tension was killing me! This is one of those books you don't see coming. I've read Konrath so I thought nothing would surprise me. But each new twist had me crawling a little closer to the edge. I love the characters, the story, the zany humor and sarcasm. It's the complete package.
This book blew my mind. So many twists and turns that I had to keep on reading so I could figure out the ending, which I got wrong. A great story and I recommend it to anyone that loves action and suspense.
This book is the ride of a lifetime! I can't recommend the entire series enough! I have fallen in love with the characters and become obsessed with this universe Konrath has created!
This is one of my favorite authors but I couldn't stay on to read this book as others have beamed about. The style in which it's written bothered me somehow and at times id get lost in the sauce. I had to jump ship and no, I still don't know what happened to Lori.
MU MU BUCKAROO. without a doubt the deepest mind fuck ever. Konrath, I don't know if you are a genius or if you should just start breaking the meds in half.
One of the strangest books I have read! Such a different writing style when the author interrupts the novel with his witt and humor. It kept me wanting to finish just to finally comprehend the full craziness of the story.
