I hope this book indicates where things are going as we progress deeper into the series. Book 4 is usually a strong measure of my future enjoyment, so I'm glad that I enjoyed this as much as I did.
Argrave still spent some time defaulting to his sad boy routine, which was annoying, but it didn't occupy as many pages in this volume. Annalise was still an annoying mother hen as well, though similarly didn't waste as many pages with it. That sort of behavior just annoys me, considering their situation.
Luckily, I really enjoyed Orion as a character. Note that I'm not saying I like him, but that I enjoyed the effect he had in the story. Also props to how the author wrote the character. Orion could have easily come across as a plot device more than a person since, from a game perspective, he was a crutch character whose existence allowed the plot to progress in this volume.
It went beyond that since his personality created a high degree of tension in every scene. His unpredictability was a great mixup to keep things interesting.
Something that's annoyed me about this series is the denial of vicarious enjoyment through Argrave since he's too busy moping like a child whenever the slightest thing goes wrong rather than taking more time to bask in his powers. Maybe if I was a more devious sort, I would have enjoyed his silver-tongue antics, but I was just wanting him to have a few altercations where he competently performed and enjoyed it and took confidence from it. Instead, he tended to cry and be pathetic when everything went to plan... and cry and be pathetic when things didn't go to plan, and he didn't win perfectly.
Things are moving in a slightly different direction as events in the story deviate from the typical game plots Argrave is used to, and he has started to embrace it a bit more rather than quiver about it to Mommy Annalise. Man, this kid annoys me, but things ended on a high note.
And overall, this is one of the best gamelit series out there from the writing and plotting. I won't deny that. So maybe as Argrave settles in a bit more, the annoyances will subside enough for me to appreciate the strong points of the series to their fullest.

I entered this book with quite a lot of trepidation. Not because I don't like this series, I'm enjoying it very much.
But because the cover of the book, plus the foreshadowing of the previous three novels, made me think one thing: "I already know how this book is going to end. I already know the general journey. I already know it's going to have a focus on Orion."
We're told in the previous three books that 'Argrave' is going to go to the northwest wetlands and work with Orion to kill the Jester. The cover makes it clear that fight is likely the 'final battle', though it's possible they fail to a degree.
And Orion IS a character with an interesting idea behind it, but honestly the snippets we got were NOT well-executed in the previous novels.
Having said that, the execution was done a LOT better in this novel. Nemorosus has grown as a writer in that way (and we know he continues to grow as his later series is better).
Furthermore, while I wasn't entirely wrong, the ending of this novel did completely surprise me. I did not think it'd end on that note, with that event, and I'm excited to continue.
Also the brief asides with side-character PoVs, though rare, were once again brilliantly done and left me wanting more.
This book also has, early on, the funniest sequence of events so far, I could not stop laughing as I read it!

If it were an option I would give this book a 4.5. it contains a lot of great storytelling, world building, character development, and dialogue, but a part of it is on the verge of being a deusmachnia. It is progression fantasy and a continuing series, so we know that things are all going to turn out probably okay which sets a bit of expectation. Good book, read it.

Awesome Stuff
This story of a walk through writer going to the land that’s based on his game was amazing. He gets the body of a sickly bastard, and uses his knowledge to rebuild his body and magical abilities. But the butterfly keeps messing up his knowledge. Great Story

Well paced and exciting
Just really cool story really fun, great characters. Most importantly with a story this large and ambitious it keeps moving we didn't spent 2.5 books in a swamp on some pointless arc, it's a beautiful thing.

This story is still going strong. Argrave's holy brother is weird though. How could you not be insane following more than 70 masters/gods?

Progress novel is better than most mid-series progress books. I enjoyed it and it's set up the next book very well.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this. Would recommend picking up. I think that the author did a great job with the characters by making everyone pretty ambiguous
