I tried to read this slowly, I really did. I don't want this series to end, but holy hell this book was everything! Leigh, we need more! 🤣 I thought Axel was completely unredeemable, but leave it to this book to crush that belief. This series came to a close perfectly, and I'm still reeling. I don't think I will ever be over these stories and this world. It will live rent free in my mind forever. This is Zale's story, and I highly suggest starting with A Cord Between Us where we first meet her and many of the other characters in this series. You've got soulmates, dragons, dragon hunters, bonds, magic, and a stellar world built in a way that just pulls you in immediately. I legitimately wasn't sure how this would end, and I am the queen of predicting the ending. Just go read it already!

My goodness. The conclusion to this story. Zale struggles with leading the Sea clan and coming to terms with everything that changed since she took her throne. The Dragon King is her worst enemy, and continues to find her despite the defenses that have been set.

As events unfold, Jenna and Kipp, Jesse and Maddie, and Simean and Samara are brought back to Zale and the Dragon King...who wants....Zale's help? Everything she thought was true is put to the test as Zale decides how best to serve her people. Will she forge her way ahead without the king, Axel, by her side, or will she trust him and risk everything?

The Sword Above Us follows the story between the two soulmates Zale and the dragon king, Axel and how they work to fight their relationship and shadows.
This is by far my favorite and it had me on the edge of my seat the whole time! It had action, romance, and two very powerful main characters.
It was just amazing and I am obsessed with the series! Zale and Axel have became my favorites for sure after this book.

This is a beautiful end to The Shadow Dragon Series.
You follow along on an emotional rollercoaster of ups and downs and sudden 360 turns. The High Queen of the Sea Clan Zale tries to slowly save the dragons from the shadows. While trying to keep her loved ones safe from the Dragon King Axel and his Sea Witch Celeste. You find out that Axel is her soulmate and he is wanting her to sever the cord between them. As she tries to fighting she severs the cord. Her dragon is made and so is the sea. She is then Axel’s prisoner until she gives up the Heart of the Sea. Axel is slowly showing Zale that he cares. Will she help him be free of the shadows. Will they be able to work together and bring back their loved ones and save the dragon species.
Read this series you will not regret it!

This is the final book in the series and it was a great ending to the story. Zale and Axel’s story was told in this book and how they deal with the shadow dragons. A very easy, quick read and I was done with it in a few hours. I loved the characters and the plot. I think Zale gave in a little too easy though.

Just like the other 3 books in this series, The Sword Above Us absolutely sucked me in and took me on a wild ride!
Zale’s story is a rough one, but I love how no matter what she tried her best to help others, even if it cost her a great deal.
Leigh did an amazing job bringing the characters to life and making me fall in love with them! I’m sad that this series has come to a close, but this is definitely one of those series that I will be rereading in the future!

The Sword Above Us, the conclusion to the Shadow Dragon Series by Leigh Ferguson

I received this book as an ARC for a honest review; all I can say is "wow".

This is the fourth installment to a series about dragons, magic, family, trauma, trust, love and hate. Leigh Ferguson's debut The Cord Between Us, won me over and took me on a journey to magical world where dragons still exist hiding as people and introduced me to the main character Jenna who's tenacious ferocity and knack for always being late sucked me in to a world, our world, where dragons do exist. Then in The Pieces Around Us we meet Maggie and get to know Jenna's brother Jessie a little more and get a taste for what unresolved grief and PTSD looks like inside of an everyday person while continuing the saga against the shadow dragons that the first book started. Then in The Stars Against us, Leigh Ferguson does what to date, to me, is her best work and we follow Simeon and Samara as he literally rewrites the universe for his soulmate while continuing the fight against the Shadows. (Seriously I can't sing book 3's praises loud enough.)

Now we have The Sword Above Us. While I love having Zale as the main character and getting to witness all her power I was deeply disappointed in this last installment. Leigh Ferguson has imagined a world that is so rich and full that I truly believe that she did herself a disservice not making the novels longer and putting forth more detail.

When most people know that a story is going to have multiple parts, I feel that they can forgive a lack of details, abrupt endings, and loose ends because there is going to be more. This story ended and left me empty an unsatisfied. Zale never really embraces how powerful she is and she escapes the in-between without any real explanation and the story ends. Yes, the Shadows were defeated and none of our beloved main characters where killed and seem to all get happy endings, which is great, but all without a whole lot of explanation. I also feel like Celeste's death was anticlimactic, it should have been more painful, more vengeful. She was evil, pure evil, and she was so easy to hate and fear throughout the series. She did terrible things and I feel our heroes deserved their revenge on her that they sadly did not get and Celeste got off easy. Zale takes a backseat to Axel when she trades herself for the sword that will save their species form annihilation which, to me, defeats the purpose of building up her reputation and how powerful she is across three installments. Then she escapes the grasp of the ancestors at the last minute with no explanation which given what we know about her makes me feel like she could have escaped if she wanted to the entire time. Then after all of that, after all that Zale went through to get to this point, she hugs her soulmate and the saga ends. Just. Like. That.

I gave this book 3 stars because I am happy that I found this series and it was a privilege delving into this world with book 3 being the highlight of it all. But this series closure was seriously lacking and sloppy. Too much was trying to be done with too little, events in the story jump around from plot point to plot point and people get mentioned almost as an afterthought. Also this is the end of the series when there is clearly so much more that can be built off of and expanded upon in the future.

I recommend this book and the series to anyone searching for fast paced fantasy romance with some triggering themes and a pinch of spice.

Title: A Riveting Conclusion to an Epic Saga - "The Sword Above Us" by Leigh Ferguson

Leigh Ferguson concludes her gripping Shadow Dragon Series with the thrilling and emotionally charged "The Sword Above Us." As the High Queen of the Sea clan, Zale faces the daunting challenge of safeguarding her people from extinction while confronting the ominous threat of the Dragon King and his shadowy allies. The novel delves deep into the intricate web of alliances, betrayals, and the relentless struggle for survival, weaving a tale that keeps readers on the edge of their seats until the very last page.

The narrative unfolds with a sense of urgency as the prophesized Dragon King, fueled by the sinister witch Celeste and the Shadows they command, inches closer to enslaving all of dragonkind. Time becomes a precious commodity for Zale, and every decision she makes shapes the destiny of her people. The stakes are higher than ever, and the author masterfully builds tension, creating a palpable atmosphere of impending doom.

Ferguson's character development shines in "The Sword Above Us." Zale, now the High Queen, undergoes a profound transformation as she grapples with the weight of leadership and the perilous bond she shares with the Dragon King. The supporting cast has been equally well-crafted throughout the previous books in this series. The dynamics between characters are explored with nuance, adding layers of complexity to their relationships.

"The Sword Above Us" seamlessly blends action, intrigue, and emotional depth. The epic battle between good and evil is rendered with flair, and the pacing is relentless, ensuring that the reader remains captivated from start to finish. The resolution of the overarching conflict is both satisfying and poignant, providing a fitting conclusion to a series that has captivated me from the beginning.

In summary, Leigh Ferguson's "The Sword Above Us" is a triumphant finale to the Shadow Dragon Series. With its rich world or dragons, compelling characters, and a plot filled with twists and turns, this book is a must-read for fantasy enthusiasts. Ferguson proves once again that she is a great storyteller, delivering a satisfying conclusion to a series that will linger in the minds of readers long after they've turned the final page.

Honest ARC Review:
Another fast paced and easy read just like the rest of the series. It sucked me in again and I had a hard time trying to extend this read so that I could have more time with it. The story is compelling and tells a tale of dragon shifters that most people haven’t seen before. I loved the character arcs and conflict in this story line. I will say that this book out of the four is the closest towards how I felt after reading the first book. I felt way more attached to Zale and her history that led her through course of the story. I also thoroughly enjoyed seeing more of Tiamat and how that ties into the fully story which wasn’t introduced until recently.
Overall I am very happy with the ending of the story and felt like it was a fast and refreshing read. If only there could be more.

*****SPOILERS PAST THIS POINT******

This finale I felt was what was needed to complete the story. I just wish that it was a little bit longer so that we could see how the world unravels and changes following the end of the shadows and the clans uniting. I really felt like we got to see the whole picture of Zale leading up to the end but that we didn’t see enough of her once the conflict was “over”. I truly loved the coming together of the clans and felt that the rogues truly have an understanding of their place in the dragon society. I honestly didn’t know if Axel would have a character redemption going into this but knowing this story line thus far I knew that Zale would get her happy ending and it was definitely foreshadowed throughout that he would be that happy ending. So of course he would have his character redemption. I just again wish it was longer to see the dynamics between the main characters and Axel unfold in the new world that they created.
I also wish that we were able to see where this left the Order now that the dragons have united and want peace with the humans. We were told that J&Js parents went back to the order and that the order was to come help in the end but what happened after with them? Did the order fall apart? Did they stay together to maintain order and act as liaisons between the humans and dragons?
These questions I have just leave me wanting more to the story and for it not to have ended.

'The Sword Above Us,' the final installment in Leigh Ferguson's Shadow Dragon series, presents a mix of anticipation and letdown. Having observed significant improvements in Ferguson's writing from the first to the third book, my expectations were high for this concluding chapter. Unfortunately, it falls short of the mark, leaving a sense of unfulfilled potential.

The story centers around Zale, an enigmatic character whose narrative arc had been a point of intrigue throughout the series. The prospect of delving into Zale's story and witnessing the culmination of the overarching plotline was initially exciting. Unlike the previous books, the romantic development in this installment didn't feel as rushed, which was a welcome change. However, this slower pace in romance seemed to detract from the overall momentum of the story, especially as it approached its climax.

The final resolution, or rather the lack thereof, is where 'The Sword Above Us' notably stumbles. The buildup to the climax occupies much of the book, yet when it arrives, it feels hastily handled and underdeveloped. Instead of providing answers and a sense of closure, the ending leaves a plethora of questions unanswered. This lack of satisfactory resolution undermines the series' development and the investment made in the characters and their journey.

While the series as a whole was enjoyable and showed a clear trajectory of improvement in writing and storytelling, this last book could have benefited from being split into two parts. This would have allowed for a more detailed and satisfying conclusion to the intricate plot woven through the series.

I would still recommend 'The Sword Above Us' to the same readers who have followed the Shadow Dragon series, as it provides some closure to the ongoing story. However, they should be prepared for an ending that might not meet the expectations set by the previous books. Despite its shortcomings, the series remains a commendable effort in the fantasy genre, particularly for readers who appreciate character-driven narratives and magical world-building.

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This review will have some spoilers but I will make sure to give a warning before I discuss any. :)

Wow! What a great way to tie up this 4 part series. I really enjoyed finally getting to see more Zale, and learning more of her ‘lore’ as I like to say. She has been such a strong character throughout the entire series and this book really showcased it.

Overall, I give the entire series a 4.5 stars out of 5 stars! I loved every character, it was a unique storyline, and the author herself did an amazing job with telling the story. My personal nitpick is I wish book 2-4 were significantly longer but I enjoy books with 600 pages and I understand not everything can be 300-500 pages per book lol.

⭐️⭐️⭐️THIS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FROM ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed Axel and seeing his character growth. He kinda gave me the vibes of Kylo Ren turning back into Ben Solo. I really wish we could have gotten more of his character. Which brings me to the topic - I do wish however the book was longer. I felt as if the ending was rushed and not detailed enough to my personal liking. There has been all this build up for the whole series just to it essentially end rather quickly with Celeste. I would’ve liked to potentially see a epilogue with how all the characters were doing and what the state of the world was in with the Dragons / Order etc.

The Sword Above Us is the fourth and final book in the Shadow Dragon Series by Leigh Ferguson. This series takes you on an amazing journey into this fantasy world of dragons, knights, and shadows. If you don't read the series in order, you will be missing out on so much of the backstory for each of these characters.

In The Sword Above Us, we get a deeper glimpse into the life of Zale. She has had a tragic and sad upbringing but that hasn't stopped her from becoming the bad ass Queen of the Sea Dragon Clan. This book takes her on an adventure to try to finally rid the world of the shadow dragons and keep her clan safe from the clutches of the Dragon King. Along the way, we get to see all of our favorites from the previous books.

I was so excited to read the conclusion of this amazing story, but overall, it was a bit of a let down for me. The book had so many twists and turns happening so quickly, that it was hard to keep up with everything. The first 3 books have built up this amazing story, but this book just rushed right through everything. Then ends quite abruptly without a real explanation of what happens in the end. Upon finishing the book, I just felt disappointed that the author just skimmed over so much and gave us so little of Zale's story. I really would have appreciated an epilogue to help tie up some of these loose ends. I still love this series, but it has definitely left me wanting more, which isn't great when it is the final book in the series.

So incredibly disappointed that this was the final book, but what a book it was! It wrapped up the series nicely, and you got to see a little bit of everyone. At first, I was sad for Zale that Axel was her soulmate. Then, I realized that while she and Lance loved each other, her in her own way, he didn't truly understand her, and for as long as they had been friends he didn't know her completely. I was heartbroken by some of the decisions Zale had to make, and so many times wished I could comfort her. She lost so much in this book and still stayed so strong. Even before she realized it, Axel was working towards building trust between them. She was a little slow, and as much as she had her doubts, she stood up for him unwavering when it came to her family and what needed to be done to win their freedom. The choice she made to get the sword was tough, but it was Zale. From the moment I read what had to be done, even in her hesitation, I knew without a doubt what choice she would make. I do wish there was a little more closure and a little more detail in the last few pages, but all in all, I loved the book & the series. Zales was by far my favorite story, and I didn't think that was possible after Jenna & Kipps story. Zale is one of the strongest, most protective characters in this series.

From the opening line, The Sword Above Us had me captivated. I have been a rabid fan of the Shadow Dragon series devouring each of the first three books and waiting impatiently for this the fourth and final book to be released. After the final paragraph in the third book I jumped into book four head first and I can confidently say I was not disappointed. I planned on taking my time to enjoy the book reading a set amount of chapters a day, but found myself up all night reading 75% of the book the first night and finishing it the next day because I could not put it down. The story line start to finish was captivating. The entire series had been building to several epic reveals and Ferguson did not disappoint. Normally I ruin everything by guessing the twists, but I did not guess a single twist which I absolutely loved. The only thing I’m sad about is that this is the last book in the series. While it was a totally perfect and satisfying ending I would read a million more books in this series. Seriously if Leigh ever wants to write a book about any random side character I’d DEVOUR it in a day no questions asked. To sum up, if you’re considering reading the Shadow Dragons series it’s totally worth it just read the books in order.

The Sword Above Us was the last book in the Shadow Dragon series, so if you haven’t read from the beginning, I highly recommend it otherwise this book might not make sense.

The first book in the series is what got me into reading fantasy books and dragons since it had me hooked from the beginning, however, I will admit this last book was a bit hard for me to get into at first. After the first few chapters, it does start to pick up pace, but like all the other books, I wish there was a little bit more. Especially with the Swords Above Us, I feel like the ending was very abrupt, but overall, well written.

The Sword Above Us starts off very dialogue heavy, and for me, it sometimes is hard for me to follow right off the bat like that. This story takes you on an adventure with Zale, the High Queen of the Sea Clan and Axel, the Shadow King while Zale tries to get rid of the Shadows and save the dragons.

Will Zale get the help she needs to save the dragons and the clans or will the Shadows take over and end the dragons for good?! You’ll have to read to find out!

"The sword above us by Leigh Ferguson" is a gripping romance fantasy that set the series finale. This book is filled action, romance and intrigue as the characters navigate the challenges for the end battle and overcoming situations that brought me to tears.

Ferguson's world-building is rich and vivid, immersing the readers in a world where dragons exist alongside humans. The characters are well-developed and relatable, each with their own strengths and vulnerabilities. The romance between the dragon shifters and their mates is both steamy and sweet, adding n emotional depth to the story. I have loved everything about The Shadow Dragon series and to know I have reached the end saddens me I have so much love for each and everyone of the characters in this series and I only have hope for Hope's Future.

This book. It took me on a rollercoaster ride! I love the mystical aspects! It is super interesting! This wonderful story tied in all the things from the previous books!

Leigh has a gift for suspense. There was never a dull moment. This may contain my favorite spicy scene of the entire series! I love me some good spice!

We get witches and dragons and wonderful humans!

Zale is strong and wonderful! Axel is a mystery. Celeste is a garbage being (but written wonderfully). And then there's Carl. Always an enigma. Always in the shadows. Always helping. Always wonderful.

If you haven't read this series, you need to!

I was given a copy of this book as part of the ARC team.
Fourth and final book in the series. This is Zale’s book and continues right after book 3. Zale is struggling with the leadership role and the threath of the Dragon King & Celeste, the witch. There is alot happening and Zale does everything she can to keep her people safe from the Shadow Dragons. She cuts the soulmate cord and that is a turning point for her and her soulmate.
There is alot of action, tension and emotions in this book. It captivate me from start to finish. I liked the fast pacing of this book. I loved this world of dragons and their story. This was a great ending to the series. Now I just need more of Carl.

The epic conclusion to the fantastic Shadow Dragon series, this book did not disappoint! I’m this book you will find heartbreak, betrayal, redemption, salvation, built trust, soulmates, sacrifice, and epic dragon battles. Each book in this series is short, which makes them easy quick reads, which is great… but my one complaint is that we don’t get to dive as deep into the character development as we could have with a longer book, and the ending felt a tad rushed. Over all I loved the Shadow Dragon series and would 100% read them again!

I received an advance copy of this book from the author, and this is my honest review.

ARC review!!

The fourth and final book of the shadow dragon series is about Zale.

A dragon who has never really known freedom… not really…she is now the high queen of the sea dragons.
The shadows are still a major threat along either her soulmate….the dragon king. Zale has always wanted to unite all the dragons no more mountain against sea but only time will tell if this can really happen or if this is the end of all dragons if they cannot come together. Super fast pace book and a little spice later on. It was a great finale. I would have liked a bit more explanation at the end but still a HEA!

“The pressure on my mind to return to her side increased with every step I took. This wasn’t right. She should be with me. Always.”

This series always kept me on my toes but this book just threw me for a loop. Being the last book in the series I anticipated the resolve of the shadow dragons but never saw it happening the way it did. It told the story’s of more than just Zale and Axel and I was stressed while reading because I didn’t know who or what to trust. I truly loved how much their souls longed for one another despite the terrible things separating them. I hated how little time they got together and wished we got more of their time together. Everything came together so nicely!!

A great conclusion to a great series!

I love that each book is a different couple but with an underlying plot arc throughout the whole series.

This book follows Zale and Axel and the push-pull of their relationship. Throughout the book, Zale struggles with the reality that her soulmate is the one person they are trying to defeat. The inner turmoil leads to drastic decisions and she deals with the consequences of her decisions.

The epic conclusion to this series is a fight against the shadows and sees all sides joining together against them.

Definitely recommend for fans of dragons, fantasy, and enemies to lovers!

Wow. That and so many other things are how I feel after finishing the fourth and final book in the Shadow Dragon Series. As I read through them all they just kept getting better and better. And this one was no different. It was such a fantastic read. I knew I wanted Zale’s story as soon as I finished The Cords Between Us and I was so excited to finally read it. What a strong independent woman she is. She shows courage, and no fear. I absolutely loved her and Axels story. Over this whole series was amazing, and I highly recommend!

The fourth and I believe final installment of The Shadow Dragon series. Every book in this series is a fated mates tale that has an overall tale that expands throughout the series. This story is about Zale, the new High Queen of the Sea Dragons. She wants to save her clan from the Dragon King and the Shadow Dragons. However, being the soulmate of the Dragon King complicates things.
I did enjoy this book and how the story of not just finally getting Zale as the FMC but the Shadow Dragons finished. That being said the ending felt rushed and anticlimactic. Yes, the story was told but was missing elements that could have really brought the ending out a bit more. Maybe an epilogue?

Last book in this series, I love axel and zale, you try to hate him at first because he is meant to be the bad one, but in my heart I knew there must be a deeper story to him.
Zale is so strong , she has suffered abuse most of her life but she still only thinks about her clan.
I was routing for her to have a happy ending, read this book to see if she does.
Easy read.
A bit of spice.
Action packed
I hope to see bonus scenes of all the books, I needed a little more from each of them, it happens when I don't want the books to end or say goodbye to the characters.

Soulmates Unite!
In this final installment of the series we finally get to see all of Zale. The treacherous childhood, her love for the sea, the relationship she has with her aunt, her hatred of the shadows, and the push and pull with her soulmate. I love the themes in this book that family is everything and love can prevail over hatred. Zale deserves all the praise and admiration Axel gives her. She is an amazing High Queen! This is a fantastic way to end the series but I hope there is more to come from this world.

Zale, Zay, High Queen of the Sea Clan, Tiamat, savior, and soulmate to her enemy, the Dragon King. The weight on her shoulders is a heavy one to bear. Her love and friendship for Lance was beautiful and tragic. Celeste is evil to the core with so many new twists revealed. I always love the supporting characters in this series. Carl being a seer. Marcos being a true MVP!

And now… Axel. The abuse both endure… the pain…. “Was this what it would be like? To be cherished everyday? Did that future await me?”

I wish there was an epilogue!!!
