Of Shadows and Fae

Rate this book
A brooding Winter King losing his power.

A found fae princess of Summer Court who has everything he needs.

A tournament that jeopardizes everything.

Kidnapped from Earth and plunged into the heart of Fae court intrigue, I discover a shocking truth—I‘m the true heir to the Summer Court Throne, a crown my sister has claimed in my absence.

But my return is marred by tragedy: the death of a High Court member, leaving a coveted seat that must be filled at once.

With each court required to present a royal contender, the choice falls squarely on me.

As the royal Summer Court's entrant in the ruthless Comortas, where only one competitor will survive, my lack of powers brands me as the likely first casualty, especially when only the strongest of our kingdom enter.

But the danger of the tournament pales in comparison to one of my rivals—the Winter King. The very one who I’m forced to enter into an alliance with.

He’s the most dangerous of them all and the mortal enemy to the Summer Court. Yet, his icy demeanor and hateful glares hide a storm of secrets and an inexplicable connection that draws me closer.

In the Comortas, every heartbeat could be my last. While I should be focused on survival, the Winter King is the one person who understands me more than I do myself.

But love, in this deadly tournament, isn’t just dangerous—it’s fatal.

Get this steamy and suspenseful forced proximity, touch her and unalive, broody male, fated mates, royal fae romance today!

Reading has always been one of my favorite hobbies, even as a little girl. When I was a toddler, my parents would read stories to me over and over. I would hear them so often that I had the books memorized and could recite the story word by word.

My favorite genres are fantasy, paranormal, and contemporary romance. So of course that's what I'm inclined to write.

I have a husband, two young daughters, and a mini Australian Shepherd. I've lived in Tennessee the majority of my life and love the state.

I'm extremely addicted to caffeine and enjoy drinking coffee and lattes.

Of Shadows and Fae

Thrilling! An action-packed story that stole my attention from the start. I loved this new world of deadly and conniving fae.

Alina, the FMC was fierce and determined. I loved her character and how she didn’t back down from anything. She was a strong survivor and it showed!
Kieran, the MMC, was possessive, prickly, and of course drool worthy. He was protective and bada**.
I enjoyed their relationship and how there were bits of glimpses of the past. There was so much more I felt could’ve been added to the story!

Tropes:

- kidnapping
- enemies to lovers
- royalty
- deadly tournament
- knife to the throat

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of this wonderful book. I don't read fantasy based on tropes nor do I seek specific tropes out. I like for it to be a surprise and I loved this surprise! I had only read a little piece before signing up for the arc and I am so glad I did.
When I reflect on this book, I first think, what would it be like to one day be transported into a faerie kingdom? How would you act? What would you say? How long would it take to adapt to their way of doing things? It's interesting to think about these questions and Jen L. Grey does a phenomenal job taking you through that experience. I never would've thought about how giving someone the middle finger might not mean what it does to us in another world. I loved that! Our main character struggles with finding herself, keeping her current self, and navigating this new world. To fully understand that statement, you should really check out this book. It was all the things I love about fantasy. Trials, a little romance (without getting too in the weeds with it), great character development, and a fun play on the what-ifs of life when this might not be your life.
There were times I thought some of the sections were all too familiar and overdone at this point but then they'd take a sharp turn and be different from where I thought it was going. This book was the perfect definition of "one more chapter" then reading till my eyes shut themselves. I very much enjoyed the opportunity to read this book.

Absolutely loved this tale of enemies to lovers. Jen L Grey did an amazing job with creating this new world and characters. So many twists and turns will keep you entranced from beginning to end. I have not read any of the other books in this series and loved that this was the first one I read, I was not lost at all and was able to follow the story as they were all written as stand alones. Though I will say, I can't wait to read the others just to see where each story goes. Definitely one of my top reads for 2024 and highly recommend adding to your TBR list.

I absolutely LOVE this entire series and even more so that each book is written by a different author! This is the fourth book, but it can be read as a stand-alone. I definitely recommend reading the others as well.

In this book, we are thrown into the life of Ivy, aka Alina. Ivy/Alina is a very quiet and loving young woman who hasn't lived an easy life. She's been thrown from foster home to foster home and has learned that she is safer just to stay to herself so she doesn't get hurt. Her only passion is helping train other young kids, who are also in the system, in the gym owned by a man who took her in, Stan.

Her life is thrown upside down when she receives a golden ticket for an all expense paid trip to Las Vegas for Halloween. At first, she decides not to go, that is until her only friend Ember also receives a Golden Ticket! Reluctantly, she agrees to go with Ember and another friend.

Not even 10 mins after she entered the fairy bar to meet her friends, was she abducted and taken to an unknown realm. Well... unknown to her in THIS life.

She finds herself not only in an entirely different realm but also that she is a Fae Princess of the Summer Court. She is at odds with everyone there as she has none of her past life memories. She is used to the human world and their rules, not the Fae. Regardless of her disadvantages, she keeps pushing as hard as she can. After being thrown into a game that most likely will warrant her death, she decides if she is going to die - it's at least going to happen with her kicking, screaming, and fighting her hardest.

She has barely anyone to help her navigate this new world, that is, until she is smitten by the Winter Court King, who is also supposed to be her enemy. Everyone is a possible enemy, and she has been told to trust no one. But the pull towards the Fae King is unmatched, and she finds herself fighting with what she's been told vs. What she is feeling.

Regardless of her feelings, at the end of the game, only one of them will be standing anyway. After all, the games are till the death. Should she shield her heart knowing she is going to die anyway? What is happening around her that she is unaware of? How will her time on Earth help or hinder her now that she is in Terra?

This is a must-read! While there are a few spicy scenes, it is not over the top. The plot is very in-depth and has a ton of twists and turns! Go ahead and pick this book up to see how Ivy/Alina navigates through merging her past and current life together!

I have immensely enjoyed the Forgotten Kingdoms series, but this is the first book in the series so far that has truly made me laugh and transported me into its world. I absolutely loved how ridiculous Alina came across to her fellow Fae upon her return, I found her backstory on earth incredibly touching & I loved the parallels to her past life, and I really enjoyed the trials she went through during the story. I was very intrigued by Kieran right away and I knew there was more to him than what we got from his first appearance in the story and the tension between him and Dallas was icing on the cake of this chapter in the Forgotten Kingdoms. I love how this story further built the world of this series and I’m looking forward to the other heiress stories to be released!

My favorite from this series so far! Ivy finds herself stolen away to a new land where she learns that not only is she Fae, but she is the true heir of the Summer Court. And to make matters worse, her court and the Winter Court must compete in Comortas. A competition to fight to the death where the last standing will take their place on the High Court. But Ivy’s memories of being Alina are slow to appear, as is her magic. She’ll have to do whatever she can to survive. But then there is the King of the Winter Court. She is drawn to him in ways she doesn’t understand. Yet he is her enemy. Right? Past and present collide the more she is in this world and where she slowly learning the truth. She’ll fight to the end but will it matter if she loses her heart in the process? I really loved this story! Definitely my favorite from this series right now. The action and romance was fantastic and I just couldn’t put this story down. I can’t wait for the next one!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I’m a little surprised this has such high ratings. The story idea was good, but I thought the main character was a bit cringy. The constant and repetitive thoughts she has about being confused as to why she was so drawn to the winter king made this entirely predictable which really ruined the slow burn effect I think the author was going for. I really wanted to DNF, but I kept hoping for some kind of twist that made the story come together for me. It never happened.

4.5 ⭐️

My main thoughts after finishing the book are:
1. Knowing from the summary it was a happily ever after that got me through at the end. I haven’t been rocked that emotionally in a while.
2. THANK THE LORD the sister wasn’t evil. I think I would have stopped reading if she was.
3. I could see the heart of a few other books represented - but honestly in so many ways I thought of Disney’s Repunzel, especially at the end and it made for such a sweet story.

Oh my heart!

Ivy is a reincarnated fae princess who gets put into a challenge to see what court will have another member added to the High Courts. She meets the Winter King, who is nothing short but frosty, but behind he's coldness there's longing and guilt. Can she survive long enough to get her memories back?

The series has been amazing so far and this book did not disappoint. You can read as a stand alone but dont, read them all, they are that good. Im a sucker for fated mates and I loved the plot and connection between the main characters. If you love reincarnation, second chance romance, forbidden love, ruthless tournaments and fae court intrigue... this book is for you

I very rarely give out five star reviews but this book truly deserved it. There were a few moments in the book that were confusing. Including the fact that the winter king was even included in the Comortas. (Hope I spelled that right lol). I understood that his brother was injured. Little strange. But it definitely worked out in the end, him dying and resurrecting, ended his betrothal to another. Overall I really enjoyed this book! I definitely recommend for all those fantasy romance readers who loved the ACOTAR series and the hunger games series!

I received an arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Abducted. Ivy knew it had been too good to be true. A golden ticket, all expenses paid for a weekend trip to Vegas. He’d slipped something into her drink. After waking she found herself in either a very weird fantasy dream or they weren’t in Kansas anymore Toto. Queen Orla said Ivy was her older sister and Dallas, the man who had drugged was Orla’s husband. She went on to explain that Ivy, who had been born Alina, was a Princess who had given her life, her magic, more than fifty years ago to bring magic back to the land after a great war with a vampire king. And while Alina had been reborn, she was actually over a hundred years old. This was a bit much Ivy knew who she was, and she was only 23 years old. She had been shuttled from one foster home to another, so many with dysfunctional families, until she’d found Stan who took her under his wing and trained her in self-defense. Now she looked out for others. Most specifically her friend Emma, who’d also received a golden ticket. After meeting with the members of the High Court and King Kieran, she had the strangest feeling that she knew him. The way he looked at her one minute as if he hated her, as if he didn’t want to believe she was really Alina. But there was longing in his eyes for her even if for only a split second before he closed down. The same longing that seemed to be pulling her to him. The others of the High Court looked at her but dismissed her. They were her to see this version of Alina and to demand that a new member of the High Court be chosen in the Trials. The High Court had the final say in any decision which affects the entire Kingdom, both Summer and Winter Court. Needing to replace the lost member meant 12 royals from both courts would fight in the arena during three trial games, until only one was left standing. Since her sister was Queen, she chose Alina to fight. Was Orla so unhappy about Alina’s return that she just wanted her gone, dead? For without her magic how was Alina to survive even the first trial? It would be a death sentence. Or would it? She would have to rely on her own intuition, her fighting skills Stan had taught her and her own belief in herself.

Alina is the third Princess to be reborn, in the Forgotten Kingdom series. During the trials Alina’s magic would return by measures, but memories came much slower for her. Dallas, the man who had abducted her, had been her betrothed, but had married her younger sister when she died to strengthen the Summer Court’s reign. Now Orla ruled in Alina’s place, and from all appearances was even less happy to see her than King Keiran had been. But why what had been between them? Reincarnation gives Alina a second chance to change the way of life in Talamh, the Kingdom of the Fae, for the betterment of all her people, a second chance with the man she had loved but had rejected her, to find peace between her sister and herself. But there are those who resent her, want her dead and plot against her during the trials. This time to see her dead for all times now.
“Of Shadows & Fae” is the third in the Forgotten Kingdon series, each book a standalone, written by a different author. Each book focuses on a magical beings, vampires, dragons, fae, demons and more. Jen L. Grey’s story is a slow revelation of memories, secrets, romance, hatred, and the greed some have for power. Alina’s past is revealed in bits and pieces, memories she brings forth. King Kieran as well has memories of the past and would seek to change mistakes he made. Alina now has her life and experiences as Ivy to rely on as well as her past and she grows as a leader. All the way up to almost the end Jen L. Grey held secrets and surprises for the reader to face. I recommend this book for any who enjoys a story so full that it doesn’t have a single empty sentence. Each page takes the reader a step forward, even if you aren’t sure where you are going or what will happen next. I definitely look forward to reading the rest of the stories.

A SOLID 3.5 STARS! #reincarnationstory

This was surprisingly enjoyable, with a reminiscent feeling of the Hunger Games - Fae Edition. I mean there were some parts that were either predictable or eye-rolling, but not entirely in a bad way.

IVY/ALINA was spirited from the human world to the fae-dom, and as you already know she's supposed to be the long lost heir of the Summer Court. Readers will share her confusion of being thrust into a whole new fantasy world whereby everyone's a vicious piranha out to kill her while battling her insane, unexplainable attraction to the Winter King. Sounds cliche, already? You bet. But I was curious to see how the author would execute the story to her advantage. This kingdom and fashion were vividly penned through the author's words, I could see it all in my head, although the world building and character depth was still lacking. I was hesitant about Ivy's character but, the more I read, the more I like.

Luckily, Ivy while lost, wasn't dumb and she remained true to her original self - the first Alina. While the fae are bloodthirsty for gory entertainment while she's enlisted into the Trials to be selected as a member of the High Court, Ivy was warmth, love and heart. I did wish we got to see more of her past. The little excerpts of her memory only served to help us understand what happened between her and Kieran, and with her sister Orla and best friend, Dallas. Doubtless, Ivy and Alina had endured much pain in their two lives, and it only served to make her stronger.

I didn't see the change of her sister and Dallas's behaviour coming. I was taken aback to how poorly they treated her in the beginning compared to how they treated her post-recovering her memory. That part didn't make a lick of sense. If Ivy's sister and bff loved her, why did they treat her so in the first place?

KEIRAN was...I wouldn't call him a cookie cutter version of the average Fae romance MMC, but he kinda was. Of course, he was protective and possessive, but not all readers might find his character endearing, especially when it borders a little on controlling. But, fear not, Ivy wasn't a pushover, so you'll be sure she'd give him a piece of her mind if she didn't like what he was doing. Like a puppy put into place, he listens. I liked the reference of their mildly angsty Romeo and Juliet love story, though I would have LOVED it had the hurt been more intense. I'm sorry, I usually get such a kick of from high angst romances that are a little hurtful or toxic.

OVERALL this was quite splendid, if not average surprise. It wasn't the best, but still acceptable. I didn't nitpick too much, just went with flow and was happy enough to have a level-headed heroine, a protective or hot-cold hero and a vicious setting of survival "games". I mean, they weren't the worse characters I've read yet for the day, so that's something.

Receiving a mysterious golden ticket to a Halloween party at a casino in Las Vegas is what allows Ivy, previously known as Alina, to return to her rightful world. Fifty years ago, she was the fourth royal who gave up her life to protect the realm of Terrea.

Ivy is the rightful heir of the Summer Court, but after her death, her sister Orla inherited the title. Ivy doesn't want the title; all that she wants is to return to earth. However, the portal is shut, leaving her with no alternatives.

To complicate things further, her sister has nominated her to compete in Comortas—a deadly competition where only one victor will earn a seat on the High Court. Having no memories and access to her powers, how will she survive?

In Of Blood & Nightmares, the first book in the series, it briefly mentions Ivy's name, but there is no interaction between her and Rhodelia. Just like the previous three books, Ivy is being forcefully taken to the realm of Terrea with no memories of her past life. It would be refreshing to see a twist, such as one of the girls choosing to go willingly🤔.

I am always interested in reading the part where we first encounter the main character from the previous book. I love to see if there's any additional information or missing parts. As for Ivy, we first read about her in book three, and it doesn't take long before we get to that part, which occurs in chapter eight, about 23 % into the story.

Throughout the story, I find it entertaining to read the Fae's reactions to Ivy, whether through her hand gestures, earthy expressions, or clothing choices. I also find her journey filled with challenges to be quite engaging, and her caring personality and mannerisms almost cost her life! The tensions between Ivy and Kieran, the Winter King, also add an exciting mystery!

The only thing I wish to learn more is about the life Kieran led, the period when he was known as Muir. I wonder if he remembers his former life. It sounds interesting! If you love reading enemies-to-lovers stories, challenging trials and fated mate themes, don't wait any longer, dive into the Forgotten Kingdom series!

I've been reading Jen's books for a while now but this is the first time I've ever read a fantasy by her and not just any fantasy Of Shadows and Fae is a portal fantasy that centers on the fae and takes place during a deadly tournament. The story was a little different than I'm used to from her but I enjoyed it.

The story follows Ivy as she learns exactly what it means to be fae Ivy was easy to like. She's genuine, cares about people but has a temper. I love her commentary, there were some funny moments there but even I cringed at some of her faux pas. Yeah, things were never smooth but Ivy refused to give in she stood up for her beliefs and regretted almost nothing. She's strong in more ways than one.

My feelings about Kieran are a little bit complicated just like the man himself. One minute I want to send him a rude gesture and the other I'm smiling at the jerk. He's messed with my emotions way too much to just settle on one but he isn't as bad as I originally thought. Like I said, complicated.

Nothing is as it seems with the fae and I'm not just talking about the weird and magical land, no I'm talking about the fae themselves. Never trust a fae, I love them but they are wicked, and the fae in this book even more so. I have never heard of a group of fae more bloodthirsty and ruthless and I've read a fair amount of fae books and the fae in this book cause me to pause. The politics are so complex and a few of the characters just kept surprising me.

Of Shadows and Fae may be a standalone but Jen sure did pack a lot into it, including an HEA. If you enjoy fae fantasy then this one's for you.

This is the 4th book in the Forgotten Kingdoms Series. And what an awesome continuation it is! We start with Ivy who has won a golden ticket for an all expenses paid trip to Vegas. She thinks that something too good to be true probably is, but she is talked into going with her friend, Ember, as Ember had also received a golden ticket as well. When she arrives to meet Ember at the Fairy Bar on Halloween night she is drugged and abducted. When she wakes up she is told that she is in Terrea and is the older sister of Orla, who is now the Summer Queen. They tell her that she had given her life to save Terrea 50 years before, now is reborn and that her name is Alina, which she denies as she has no memory of them, a life in Terrea, wings or magic. She knows she is 23 and thinks the whole thing must be a nightmare. Shortly she is introduced to the High Court and the Winter King. She is told that one of the High Court has died and her sister chooses her to represent the Summer Court and compete for the High Court seat. Little does she know that this is a live and win or die series of “games.” She has a strong draw to the Winter King, which she doesn’t understand and whom she doesn’t care about or trust, or at least doesn’t want to. So the story and the adventure begin. This is a great continuation to the series. I definitely recommend it…and the whole series. Each book is a stand-alone, although you do hear from some of the characters in the prior books, so it connects better if you have read them. Enjoy!!!

Read it! Of Shadows & Fae by Jen L. Grey was recently released!! It is another installment of the Forgotten Kingdoms. Ivy is taken from a party in Vegas and dropped in to a place completely beyond her comprehension. The weather, the verbage and all the other things are confusing. She just wants to head back to her world. She ends up in a meeting with the council and foreboding King of the Winter Fae. She is drawn to him but irritated with his personality. She has trust issues. Her human background colors her entire experience. King Kieran has history with Ivy’s past self. It jades him. They end up having to join a competition to take the open council seat. It's so entertaining to read how that goes.

Jen always does a wonderful job with the worlds she creates. I'm so glad she is a part of this collaborative. Her depiction of Fae lands is beautiful. As I read about the flowers, smells and atmosphere, I found myself taking deep breaths and my shoulders dripping. It was relaxing to me as well as a little jealousy inducing. I always fall for how she creates her worlds. They are beautiful. And her characters. Gosh. The spunky heroine is wonderful! So much sass and also sense of right and wrong in a land of hazy morals. Also, the names. Very Irish in origin, which I am a sucker for. The book ties in well with the Forgotten Kingdoms world and I can't wait to see what comes next! READ THIS BOOK!

Until Next Book,

“Of Shadows and Fae” was my first Jen L. Grey book, and I have to say that I thought it was a fantastic read! I love a good fae fantasy romance, and this one had everything I could’ve wanted and more!

This was the fourth Forgotten Kingdoms book, which is a series of standalones set in a shared world written by multiple authors. Technically this series can be read in any order, but I personally started with book one, and I’ve really enjoyed my reading experience!

This book tells the tale of two fae royals, King Kieran of the Winter Court and Princess Alina of the Summer Court. The Winter and Summer Courts are bitter rivals, and to top it all off, members of both courts must fight to the death in a ruthless competition called the Comortas, including Kieran and Alina.

I thought Alina was a really interesting character because she didn’t back down when people tried to oppose her. People either loved or hated her, but she refused to be anything less than her authentic self, even if that meant she didn’t behave like the princess the Courts remembered her to be.

Kieran was definitely an intriguing character as well. He and Alina made an unlikely alliance during the Comortas, and I could sense their chemistry from the moment they met. Kieran did make a few mistakes, but I truly think he meant well, and it was obvious how much he cared about his siblings and how important Alina was to him. If you love the fae, this is definitely the book for you!

Hunger Games/Battle Royale-style tournament of fae.
I wasn’t into the male main character (MMC) Kieran because he was weak, cowardly, wishy washy, seemed hypocritical or dishonest, controlling without committing, wanting her but not wanting to go against the rest of society and only wanting her on his terms, manipulative, expecting her to be happy as a secret side piece. He was possessive and didn’t want anyone looking at her, while he doesn’t follow the same rules for himself. He gave such gross vibes. I couldn’t tell if he was just an idiot or just viewed Alina and her feelings as less than and not a priority.
I liked the leading lady Ivy/Alina because she mostly seemed reasonable and a strong person.
I didn’t like the fae world because most seem sort of out to get you, selfish, egotistical, mean; I guess it’s a fae thing.
I don’t really care for the fated mates trope, it seems like an easy way to not care about putting together a compelling love story or excuse how toxic someone is. While Alina is a person of integrity, she has an attraction to this horrible man Kieran because of the eye roll fated mate thing. Maybe those poor omega wolf females have to accept abuse at the hands of an evil fated mate alpha in werewolf books which I avoid, but a fantasy American girl turned fae princess should get someone worthwhile!
Maybe these style of books, while easy to read, is just not for me.

I received an arc for this one and am glad I did. I absolutely loved this one. It has everything fae which is my favorite. This is a new author for me and all I can say is WOW! The story is full of court intrigue, rivals, deception and truth. I thought it was very well written and the world building was exceptional. The story flowed well and kept me turning pages.
Ivy goes to help her drunk friend and instead she gets taken. Her captor whisks her away to the fae realm where she is thrust into a life she doesn't remember. As she learns about her past life and the fact that she is the true heir to the summer court, she also learns she is to compete in the Comortas. The comortas are a fight to the death to fill a vacancy on the council. Ivy or as the fae know her Alina arrived as a high fae's death created the vacancy. Alina struggles with this news. Her memories haven't fully returned as well as her magic. She fears this puts a target on her back. She also will have to face her enemy the winter king. Kieran who is a king that will sacrifice nothing to save his people and apparantly Alina knew him well. Alina's return also causes grief for her sister who took the throne in Alina's absence.
There are just so many twists and turns that you won't want to put it down. An absolutely fantastic read if fae are for you.

Of Shadows & Fae is book four of the Forgotten Kingdoms series, a shared world full of standalone romantasy stories that can be read in any order, but I would personally recommend reading them in order so you get the full effect and understand the significance of the random cameos that pop up throughout.

@authorjenlgrey brings us the story of Ivy, the reincarnated rightful heir to the Summer Fae Court who was kidnapped from Vegas on Halloween night after she begrudgingly agreed to meet her two best friends (Ember & Isa) there. She definitely should have trusted her gut and stayed home…after being drugged & kidnapped by a douchey frat bro-type, she wakes up in a literal fairytale castle…and finds out she has a sister (Orla)…who is now Queen…and is married to the frat bro that drugged & kidnapped her…oh, and she used to be engaged to him and her name used to be Alina.

I don’t know about you guys, but none of my Vegas vacations have been even remotely that interesting.

If all that wasn’t batshit crazy enough, Ivy is ridiculously drawn to the broody, rude, but insanely hot Winter King, Kieran…her court’s “enemy.” Oh, and Orla voluntells her that she’ll be competing in a competition to the death for the vacant seat on the High Court. As you can guess, Ivy isn’t thrilled about ANY of this. She just wants to go home…to Earth.

The death match/tournament parts of the book reminded me of Carissa Broadbent’s The Serpent and the Wings of Night vibe-wise (and I loved that series/literally everything she writes). This book is action packed, full of slow burn tension, surprising family dynamics, and just an overall great story with a lovely ending.

Thank you to Lady Amber’s Review and PR and Jen L. Grey for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

“A brooding Winter King losing his power. A found fae Princess of Summer Court who has everything he needs. A tournament that jeopardizes everything.” This is my first read from this author and I am so glad that I picked this up! This book is a fantasy romance filled with interesting and memorable moments that make it hard to put down. For readers who liked The Hunger Games with a mix of The Cruel Prince, I believe you will greatly appreciate this as I did.

My first fiction 5-star read of the year!!! I would love to say, I will take one Kieran, please. How do I order cash, credit, debit, check, money order? Just give me one immediately! Give me an Alina too while we’re at it. This read has every one of my favorite tropes with amnesia, fated mates, touch her and die, and a deadly tournament. I also am typically not a very big lover of second chances but this was written beautifully that it made it so easy to digest. I love a strong female lead who shows emotional maturity while also learning from her past mistakes. The plot has so many twists that I was not expecting and while you could kind of tell how the characters would develop you cannot pinpoint when which I adored.

Ivy/Alina and Kieran

Awakening in a strange place, Ivy is faced with people, FAE people who claim that she’s their long lost princess, who gave her life in sacrifice to save the realms. Apparently once a High Court Summer Fae, Ivy has no memories of that time; she’s not even sure that she is this Alina they speak of.
This doesn’t stop her from being thrust into a contest to represent her court on the High Council, following the death of one of the members.
It’s a contest to the death, and she’s up against not only the ruthless fae from from her own court, but the fae king from the winter court.
Ivy finds herself drawn to the king, but their courts are enemies, and the contest means that only one can be left at the end.

Another entry into this multi-author shared world, this time we are visiting with the fae. There’s a connection to “Of Elves and Embers” within the series, but nothing that requires you reading it first.
It’s an entertaining read, with a set of interesting characters, and set in an interesting world.
There’s some steam, a lot of action and adventure, fated mates and more.
If you’re a romantasy lover, then this is an enjoyable book and series to read.

Of Shadows and Fae

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I love the concept of ‘Of Shadows & Fae’ by Jen L. Grey. It was very well written and thought out. I love how in this book in the Forgotten Kingdoms Collection we finally get to find out Alina story and see how she ended up in the realm of Terrea in the kingdom of Talamh. Alina is one of the 8 females who sacrifice herself to help defeat the evil vampire king. She was reincarnated in the human realm and is now a fae princess with no memories of her past life. Alina life as she knows it all goes to hell when she receives a golden ticket to a Halloween party in Vegas. Little does she know that this will be her last day in the human realm. Once Ivy as she now goes by wakes in Talamh she thinks that it’s a joke being played on her by her friend Ember to get back at her, but as time goes on she realizes that this is her new reality and if she wants to survive the Fae realm she better hurry up and get her memories back or she just might end up dead. Come and read Of Shadows & Fae and see how Ivy (Alina) turns out.

So far my second favorite in the series!

This has all the brutality of a Far story. I absolutely loved it! Ivy/Alina is a tough survivor of the foster system. She has a big heart. When she gets kidnapped by the Fae. Her younger sister is queen. When her sister throws her a hunger games type challenge. King Keiran is the winner king. Obviously the summer & winter courts don't get along. Alina is a summer Fae but she can't help wanting to jump Keiran. They both end up being thrown in the competition. Keiran helps Alina through the trials because she hasn't recovered her memories. She was reincarnated & she also doesn't have her magic. Keiran & Alina can't fight their fated mate connection. They protect each other. After they decide to throw caution to the wind and make love. This solidified their mate bond. Right after Keiran mentions that he is betrothed to another woman. She is to give him an heir & be a figure after that. Alina doesn't want to be his mistress. The thought of her fated mate with another woman makes Alina sick. She throws Keiran out of her room. Despite that they can't stop their magnetic soul mate connection. Their is a HEA.

This was my favorite book in the series so far, but it felt very detached from the rest of the series.

The priestess Abba hasn’t shown up once (wasn’t even mentioned) and the whole sacrifice wasn’t a part of a plot, really. To the point that Kieran had no idea Alina was gonna be reincarnated in 50 years, which was the whole point of the prophecy and it seemed to be obvious for everyone in every other book.

There was no particular conflict here, either, besides some minor political one that led to the whole Hunger Games ordeal which was pretty much the whole plot.

Why were the courts divided? What problems did commoners face that Alina wanted to solve? What did the sacrifice change in that kingdom? Every other one was somehow affected, cursed in a way that the sacrificed girl had to solve, this one just used a special power for a personal gain. The author didn’t explore any actual issues, whatsoever.

I liked this quite simple story, I enjoyed the romance, but I’m slightly annoyed the author didn’t bother to connect it in any meaningful way to the series it’s supposed to be a part of.
