Meikle's substantial revision of his excellent 'A History of Horrors' results in a definitive account of the beloved British company - and an entirely fitting swansong to a long career as one of the genre's finest historians and commentators (he passed in 2022). This final work is characteristically unsentimental and honest about Hammer's ups and downs, with some fan favourites given short shrift. But it's also a fascinating, detailed account of Hammer's rise and fall and eventual rebirth, unafraid to highlight the bad decisions / conflicts and particularly valuable in documenting the pre-horror years. A tremendous read for anyone with an interest in British cinema history.
