i lived in alaska for a bit a few years ago and, lately, ive been really missing it. so ive been on the hunt for a book that captures the special atmosphere of the raw and magical wilderness of the last frontier. and, based on the cover, i thought this could do it.

while i enjoyed the brief little tidbits about the historical town of skagway, the gold rush, and the impact of tourists to the area, it wasnt enough to transport me there. it honestly wouldnt surprise me if KR hasnt actually ever been to alaska, because the description of the area is missing the sort of reverence that everyone who has ever been to alaska has when talking about it.

which wouldnt be a deal breaker if i liked the story but the romance aspect of this, which is the whole plot, just wasnt it. this story feels like it was written just for the sake of being written, not because its a story that means something to the author.

now, im not saying a writer needs to spend 10 years putting blood, sweat and tears into a book. but a reader can tell when an author doesnt really care about their characters or story (the primary culprits i find to be romance authors who have written 30+ books and release multiple novels each year). which is why i think this story feels like its lacking in personality, chemistry, and overall appeal.

but i dont want this review to be only a negative rant of me poo-pooing on the author and this story. because she has written some really good books. both “unloved” and “never let you go” are amazing. so i would recommend those instead, as well as “the great alone” or “the simple wild” for stories set in alaska.

This was a well-balanced novel with equal portions of family/relationship drama to romance to Alaskan history. I thought the fake dating trope and characters were good and the setting was wonderfully described. The influx of cruisers and the impact on the small town was perfect. There's so much to enjoy in this novel. Skagway holds a big portion of my heart.

However, the following have prevented me from continuing with the series despite LOVING Skagway:

1) the crude language/open door 'romance' - completely unnecessary and doesn't add to the story. With such a beautiful wholesome cover, this was a shock.

2) the imbalance of research - fantastic history/description of Skagway BUT not the same effort put into the names of places/things (i.e. I kept correcting the bar as Red Onion, one of the cruise ships had the correct name, but Emerald Princess was misnamed and the Carnival ship named doesn't exist.) For those of us in the know, we are confused as to why so much effort went into getting the history correct, but not the same attention to other things. Less than 5 minutes online could have fixed this glaring inaccuracy.

I really wanted a new series to read and was excited to hear about this new one featuring my favourite place. However, I'll be quickly looking for a palate cleanser to forget this one!

Thank you for the opportunity to read a new-to-me author's work. A strong PASS on the rest of the series.

Where to start. I absolutely loved this story. Tanner & McKenna are a mismatched pair, in size, lifestyle and future goals. She’s desperately searching for a way to supplement her income, he needs help getting rid of a crazy ex girlfriend. Enter the perfect solution, he places a personal ad that she answers, which brings McKenna to take a summer job in Alaska and pose as Tanner’s fake fiancée. Problem solved. Except, things get messy, and then heated and then emotions get involved and the plan starts to unravel fast.

McKenna Cole has abandonment issues, she was raised by her grandmother and feels unlovable. Tanner Stewart comes from a large, tight knit family and isn’t looking for forever. And yet that’s the thing. When you least expect it, expect it. Sometimes love finds you and it comes in all shapes and sizes.

I need more Stewarts please?!? Hunter, Harper, Sawyer, I’m invested and need their stories.

Summer in Skagway. My fellow readers. Alright! Can I just say that this writer gets me. She knows where exactly to cast her magical writing skill sets on how to tell a goof family story.
Not only a good family story, but a romantic story that will remind of what relationships and everlasting love. I am not lying. The writing of the Stewart’s family history and Tanner and McKena’s love story is simply brilliant. I feel that the book touches your soul on so many levels.
Tanner and McKena’s shares with you some of the good sides and not so much good sides of a budding romance that’s crazy amazing. Their romance is crazy amazing and so gripping with desire, passion and pure lust. Powerful that’s the word that Im going for here. Everything about this book is just powerful. From true and meaningful quotes to live by to the love of an endearing family member.
God if everyone could write like this. I will leave that statement open as I’m shaking my head, because the writing is just that good yaw. I respect that the writer took her time to research about Alaska and Skagway. Then the writer adds the information to the story and combines it with a fictional families legacy. Meanwhile as you read these facts and the family stories the book seems so real.
It’s like you are right there experiencing all the quirky, humorous, dramatic and loving issues that seem to come down over the Stewart’s in Skagway. I give this book a two snaps and a, Romona have you ever heard of to the moon Alice? Until next time my fellow readers. Read on! I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. #SummerinSkagway #KatyRegnery #Goodreads #Bookbub

The absolute best of a very enjoyable series! I loved both main characters (heroine McKenna and hero Tanner). I loved how they both insisted the other wasn't their physical type but how that changed once they got to know each other. I loved the chemistry that Tanner and McKenna had and laughed (to myself) when they thought that they could just be 'friends with benefits' with no feelings involved. God they had some smokin' hot scenes...

I especially loved the setting--learning all about Alaska throughout the series was so enjoyable. Of course I had to Google the towns and the attractions--I'm a sucker for an interesting setting, and the author did a fantastic job painting the picture.

I loved Tanner's big family and how they interacted with both him and McKenna. I would love it if the author wrote stories for all of them because I would gobble them up.

But probably what I loved the most of all was how this book made me feel. I got very emotional and shed a few tears with the love the characters showed to each other and their family members. The characters were so well written that I felt that I knew them and felt protective of them-- I didn't want them to hurt (I hurt when Tanner was hurt)--I just wanted good things and a HEA for them.

So I was very impressed with this latest installment of the series. It took a while to get here but it was definitely well worth the wait! I'm only sad that I finished it in one day since I didn't want it to end!

Summer in Skagway is the most recent book in the "Odds Are Good Standalone Series". This series is one of my favorites of Kate's - there's just something about Alaska that I'm just crazy about. Tanner has a wacko ex so he places an ad in the Odds are Good magazine for someone to play his fake fiance hoping the ex will give up on him. McKenna lives in Seattle and is desperate for money to help pay for her grandmother's expensive Memory Care facility.. I love the way Kate compares Tanner to Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy and McKenna to Alice in Twilight so I have their images in my head as I read the book. As the story progresses, they learn about each other and their histories and realize that they like each other and that grows to more. The dual POV is perfect. Learning the history of Skagway and their town of Dyea and the gold rush that spawned them is what makes this story even more special. I give this story 5 stars and highly recommend this book and all the books in this series. They are truly standalones and can be read in any order.

Tanner finds himself facing a dilemma when the woman he spent some time with last summer decides that she is going to return. He knows that he was lucky to escape that relationship so the last thing he wants is her pursuing him so he decides to place an ad looking for a pretend fiancé.

McKenna is facing a dilemma of her own as she wants to support her beloved grandmother who was always there for her. Between the funds that Tanner is offering and a summer job this could be the answer that both of them are looking for but developing feelings for each other weren’t part of the plan.

The attraction between them is undeniable, the interactions between them are entertaining and there is a great cast of secondary characters which add both humor and emotion to the story.

Another awesome addition to the Odds are Good series. I love the setting in Alaska with magical sceneries, small town people, and adventures. It is all beautiful and you feel transported there. McKenna and Tanner love story is sweet and slow burn, opposite attract and fake dating/fiancé. McKenna had a difficult upbringing. She is in need of money to pay for her grandma's assistance living. Tanner needs to lose a fatal attraction ex so he placed an ad looking for a fake fiancé in hope that his we will leave him alone. McKenna jumped at a chance since all expenses are paid for and by the end of summer she could pocket a lot of cash before heading back to Seatle. What she did not expect is too fall for Tanner. Their relationship is slow building and not without many ups and downs. McKenna don't do relationships or love because the people supposed to love her always leave. Tanner just dodged a bullet with an ex and the last thing he wants is to jump in another relationship with someone. A friend with benefits arrangement would be best if they don't risk their hearts. Easy said than done! ❤️
I love everything about this book - the romance, the magnificent setting. Gorgeous writing as always. I can not wait for possibly a start of a new series - Stewart's siblings? Yes please! 🙏

Something about Alaska interest me, that's why I'm excited to read books with Alaska settings. I enjoyed this, love the town, outdoor excursions, local business, etc. Might be annoyed with the H at first for being immature but he "grew up" quickly and became so reliable, love him.

Another well written, steamy and entertaining romance from this author. Set in and around Skagway, Aaska. Our laid back, rugged and viking-like, player hero is in a bit of a dilemma. Last summer he hooked up with a woman who ended up stalking him after they broke up. When Tanner discovers his crazy ex is coming back to work this year, he places an add in a 'lower 48' magazine for a fake fiancee for the duration of the summer season. McKenna, from Seattle, is in a financial bind and the lure of free board and the offer of a summer job as well as being a fake fiancee, is too good to pass up. Especially since Tanner's not her type and she isn't his type.

This book is very dialogue driven between the H/h, with lots of interesting information about the 1800's gold rush in the Yukon thrown in randomly, which I enjoyed. I've been to Alaska twice, (on a cruise - LOL), so I could picture the areas quite well. Tanner's family and five siblings, who make lots of appearances, take out tours and arrange treks and other activities for tourists. They own and run a resort, made up of cabins in a wilderness area near Skagway. This book is a great addition to this series and is a stand alone romance with great chemistry between the H/h. My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC. (If you haven't read this author's books, you are missing out!) 4.5 stars.

I couldn't get into this. Mostly because I didn't like Tanner from the beginning. He's basically an ass in the beginning. He's fake engaged to Kenna; even after they meet, he's thinking about going to another town to hook up. States multiple times she's not his type and really has no attraction to her. When he see's her standing next to a bed, he's thinking of his ex and how hot his ex was. When Kenna gets dressed up for a fake date, Tanner is surprised that she looks good. At some point he says he admires her and wonders if that will make him attracted to her. And then somewhere half way through, he's totally attracted to her. And I totally didn't understand why Kenna told Tanner no to condoms. Tanner wants to be safe, and even after he puts one on, Kenna convinces him to take it off because she doesn't like them. I've read this author before, and she has few books that I really liked. But I feel the more books of hers I read, there are more misses than hits.

First read from this author...won't be the last!!
This was a very enjoyable read. There is tension and chemistry, family ties, and almost an enemies to lovers feel going on. The characters are extremely likeable, which includes all the side characters as well. I would love to visit that pub. The world building was good and takes you there. The story holds your attention. There are twists and turns and moments that bring you to tears. Very good read, and I want more of the siblings and this town!!

I received an ARC of this book, all opinions and thoughts are my own.

5 Star Review Tanner (The Stewarts of Skagway #1) by Katy Regnery

When I heard that Katy Regnery was releasing a new series, I was excited to read. Having read and enjoyed numerus books form this author I knew I was in for an entertaining story. I was intrigued by Skagway and Dyea and the descriptive writing the author provided.

Set in the wild of Alaska, the Stewart siblings intrigued me from the start. Book one is Tenner’s story, and it was a tad unconventional to say the least. From the first chapter I was drawn into the story that Ms. Regnery wove. Tanner has managed to get himself into a bind with an ex Ramona, who is a crazy (to say the least, in fact she’s a real nasty piece) and he is in desperate need of a fake fiancée, which is where McKenna Cabot comes in.
McKenna needs funds to help her grandmother and when she reads Tanner’s add she is intrigued. What follows in a fun, entertaining story that will draw you in and hold you captive, I know it did me. Tanner and McKenna are total opposites and yet they worked well together and I loved watching their romance progress.
I loved the relationship that Tanner and his siblings had, they are all individual and have their own quirks which added to my enjoyment of the story.
Tanner is a sweet, romantic, at times passionate story that ticked all the boxes for me and I was cheering for them to get the happily ever after that they both deserved.

This book is making me wanna read as many romance books set in Alaska as I can

Such a sweet and romantic story. This book was filled with so much love. McKenna and Tanner were sweethearts. From the beginning I really really liked them. Even though they weren't each others types at all they found it hard to stop thinking about one another.

They had such a strong connection and sooo much chemistry. My favorite thing about Tanner is that he doesn't play when it comes to her and his family. He loves with his entire heart and will do anything for the people he loves. Same goes for McKenna too. The ending had be crying. I wanted to give her such a big hug 😭😭

Their relationship went kinda slow which I really liked. It gave them time to get to know one another on a more deeper level. They definitely went through a lot of ups and down but the love they had never diminished.

I loved how close the family are. They don't hesitate to defend and /or protect each other. I am definitely gonna be reading the books about the siblings when they come out.

************************

I did have a tiny problem with how much McKenna body was mentioned. Like ok we get it she ain't "curvy" move on 🥴🥴

I read this story when it was first published as Summer in Skagway. My review still stands.

Tanner is the first book in The Stewart’s of Skagway series. This is the same story, with a bonus ending. The addition of an epilogue by Harper has me asking so many more questions.

Quick Summary: A big, little love story

My Review: Summer in Skagway by Katy Regnery is associated with The Odds-Are-Good Standalone Romance Collection. It is a fake fiancee story.

About the Book: Tanner Stewart will do almost anything to get rid of his ex -- an ex who just so happens to give off mad-crazy Fatal Attraction vibes. When he decides to place an ad to get a fake fiancee, he quickly realizes that he hit the jackpot when he secured the help of McKenna Cabot.

My Final Say: This book was so much more than I expected. I loved the representation it showed, regarding family types. I also loved how it dealt with caring for a family member with a neuro cognitive issue. The Stewarts were great. Being able to catch glimpses of each of them and their potential love interest was cool. I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Other: The cover might need to be reconsidered. The angle of the model presents an interesting picture. What exactly is he doing?

Rating: 4/5

I have never hated a book as much as I've hated reading this. I don't know what was worse for me—the characters being so absolutely horribly two dimensional, the dialogue, the pacing, or just how it ended. Everything was just insufferable for me. If I hadn't been living in Alaska, I don't think I would be so frustrated with some of the things in the book, but my gods, save yourself the suffering.

I never warmed up to the hero. He rubbed me the wrong way from the very beginning.

Technically, I wouldn’t consider the OW his ex since he goes on (in great detail) that she’s a seasonal and all they did is screw.

There is no insta-lust as he compares the heroine to looking like a teenage boy. He goes on and on about her not being his type (his type being tall, big boobed, long haired women). He goes from her being not his type to being in love with her. I completely missed when this sudden realization took place.

I wouldn’t recommend this one. But I have enjoyed other books in this series.

Tanner

In this Alaskan wilderness romance, we follow our MMC Tanner, who is in search of a fake finance for the summer season in Skagway, Alaska. Tanner needs a fake finance to keep his crazy ex girlfriend away from him during the tourist season. Then enters McKenna, our FMC who answers the fake finance ad. McKenna wants to fund the nursing home her grandmother is living in and what better way than to play fake finance?

What these two don’t expect is to fall in love. They outright proclaim that they are “not each others types” but what they both learn during this summer season in Skagway is that love is more than just who you’re attracted to physically and they connect on an emotional level due to them both dealing with loss and grief.

I didn’t think at first that these two characters were going to hit it off but over the course of the book, the relationship growth felt very organic and sweet. This book could really be summarized as sweet and blissful with just a sprinkle of drama and a whole lot of spice 🥵 not only were our MMC and FMC great, but the whole Stewart family was funny and the quirky town residents were enjoyable too. I definitely look forward to read about the rest of the Stewart Siblings.

“I’m going to love her like I love my family. Like I love Alaska. Like I love the changing seasons or the midnight sun. I’m going to love her because she’s a part of what makes the world a place for life and heartache and perfection.”

🇺🇸This is my 1st book by this author, and what a pleasant surprise! The cover drew me in, the desire for oxygen and wide open spaces. As I read this story, I landed in a small town in Alaska, with a very special family, for a very special summer, and I loved the journey.

The writing style really won me over, and I felt immediately immersed in this world, alongside the characters.

Tanner is desperately looking for someone to pretend to be his fiancée in front of the toxic girlfriend he had last summer. Along comes McKenna, who's not about to let anyone walk all over her. Of course, she's not his type and he's not hers.

But as the pages go by, we see them sharing much more than appearances suggest, and I loved following them on this (sometimes difficult) adventure.

This is the 1st book in a series of 6, and I highly recommend it!

crazy Ex

Tanner had the biggest transformation from bachelor to taken. His crazy ex makes a seasonal stop in his home town for the season and stirs up some stuff. McKenna posed as Tanner’s fiance (no way the town would buy that story in real life!) and things evolved. I enjoyed reading about Alaska and unravelling Tanner the most.

Oh the Stewart’s are going to be fun, I can just tell!

Book 1 in this new family series was about Tanner and McKenna. 2 opposites who are in a fake engagement - ahhh! My fav! There is just something about fake dating that gets me swooning!

They have 1 summer to fake an engagement and all the drama, and love, that goes with it. :)

This was the perfect starter to the series and has me so excited for the rest of the siblings’ stories. 1 Stewart down, 5 to go!!

I was transported to the stunning Alaskan backdrop, where Tanner Stewart's search for a fake fiancée leads him to McKenna Cabot. Their arrangement, meant to deter Tanner's ex, evolves beautifully from pretense to profound connection. The book masterfully blends humor and romance, immersing me in the tight-knit Stewart family and the quaint charm of small-town life. The slow-burn romance, enriched by the dual perspectives of Tanner and McKenna, makes their journey toward love both authentic and deeply moving. This delightful narrative, marked by emotional depth and scenic beauty, promises an exciting series ahead, and I'm eagerly awaiting the unfolding stories of the Stewart siblings.

I LOVED Tanner! This book surprised me in the best of ways. I even found myself crying; it got me in the FEELS, but probably not for the reason others might. My grandmother had Alzheimer’s so I truly understood what McKenna was going through. McKenna has found herself in a tight spot. She’s the caregiver for her grandmother and has to make a tough decision. She responds to Tanner’s ad and has no idea what to expect. She isn’t Tanner’s type but she’s there, helping him. I enjoyed the budding friendship between McKenna and Tanner. I liked how Tanner’s family were in support of their faux relationship. Their journey felt believable and I couldn’t put this book down! I loved everything about this story!

As an Oregon Duck fan, I appreciated the references to the rivalry between football teams. I felt as thought someone was channeling my feelings onto the page, and it made me laugh so hard.

Tanner is your typical playboy, but struggling when one of his ex's who took things too far, comes back for the Summer and he needs a fake fiancee to discourage her unwanted attention.

This was both an emotional and hilarious story. My heart broke for McKenna's journey, struggling to take care of her Grandma with Alzheimer's. But the witty banter, and hilarious family members keep it from being too serious.

I loved Tanner and Kenna, especially as I'm watching the Duck/Huskie game right now. I'll always think of their story when this rivalry plays, and I can't wait to read it all over again.

**Side note to the author: Please have more books in this series coming soon!!!

I alway enjoy Katy’s amazingly written stories. I have missed her very much. This 5 star story was the perfect road trip entertainment.

Tanner finds himself in quite a bit of trouble so he puts an add in The Odds Are Good magazine for a fake fiancé. McKenna needs to make money to help her grandmother so she responds to Tanner’s add. It was suppose to be a summer event , no feelings no strings attached.

I enjoyed immensely this highly entertaining heartfelt story that is based in Alaska. The characters were perfectly created for this storyline. I loved the other characters that played an important role in the development of the story. A page turner that flowed well. I was hooked from the beginning to the end. Bottomline this is a must read.

Standalone told in a dual POV with an HEA. I strongly recommend this story.
