Innovative College Teaching: Tips & Insights from 14 Master Teachers

Rate this book
Embrace AI-generated student projects? Flip your online AND in-person classes? Administer open-note in-person exams? I know, but please keep an open mind.

Innovative College Teaching is intended for new or seasoned professors, lecturers, instructors, professors of practice, part-time (adjunct) professors, and graduate teaching assistants, as well as curious high school teachers. You will learn what makes the best teachers tick and read easy-to-replicate tips on taking your skills to the next level.

For example, in Part I, Innovative Teaching Techniques, the author shows students use AI to “write” professional letters to a company; a model AI-generated letter; and each prompt used to create that document. College students experience the benefits and challenges presented by AI and then reflect on the project’s value through targeted questions.

In Part II, Innovative Master Teachers, over a dozen professors responded to the following:
1-What inspired you to teach?
2- What teaching methods are most helpful in guiding students toward their goals?
3- What would you like to improve about your teaching?
4- What skills should be emphasized in high school to succeed in your college class?
5- What is the one thing you wished you would have known when you started your teaching career? / Do you have any last bits of wisdom?

The author interviewed accomplished colleagues including a star adjunct professor for readers who teach part-time. They bring diverse teaching styles from varied disciplines, including Education, Entrepreneurship, Law, Science, Technical Education, and several Business departments. These individuals are curious and innovative. Their passion for teaching is contagious. Students gravitate to them—and you will be inspired by their tips and insights on teaching.

Humorous and informative pedagogy book

Although aimed at educators looking for “outside-of-the-box ideas” teaching college students, parents who want to inspire their children to enjoy higher education can benefit from it as well. As Perry Binder stated “Most of the books on college teaching are loaded with advice that tells you how to teach (Be passionate; Be flexible; Be yourself!), rather than show you by example how to teach.”

This book is presented in two parts: innovative teaching techniques and innovative master teachers. First, Binder (a licensed attorney who teaches law and business ethics to college students) discussed his teaching philosophy, online classes, artificial intelligence, exam prep, student engagement, and his college professor journey. Next he interviewed thirteen professors in the Education, Entrepreneurship, Law, Science, Technical Education, and Business departments.

The Appendix has useful anecdotes, pedagogy information, and sample classroom materials. The “Using AI to Develop Classroom Modules” highlights how the author uses his teaching method on emerging technologies.

Good ideas for the classroom

I appreciated all of the examples and ideas to engage university students in the classroom. I have been teaching since 2008, and I am always looking for new ideas and practices to try. I especially liked how multiple experienced instructors share their teaching techniques.

This book was a nice reminder that as a veteran teacher, I am already doing good things for my students. I enjoyed hearing others' strategies on classroom engagement and exam taking. Also, the book had good ideas on how to use AI in class assignments.

Great Overview on Effective Teaching Techniques

This was another great overview on effective teaching techniques by Perry Binder. He places special emphasis on engaging students in the classroom and using personal information to meme things real. Some of the other professors he interviewed had interesting points about helping students choose areas of study that would be beneficial to their futures and even topics like how to communicate and present oneself to be effective in the business world. Perry is obviously effective as a teacher but also engaging as a writer which I guess the two go hand in hand. Great read, highly recommend!

5-STAR READERS' FAVORITE REVIEW by Pikasho Deka (January 10, 2024)

Adaptability, enthusiasm, and a desire to constantly improve one's methods are the hallmarks of an effective teacher. With years of experience teaching law and ethics in business school, Perry Binder brings a comprehensive teaching guide to assist those in the teaching profession in finding creative ways to nurture and refine young minds and help them reach their fullest potential. In Innovative College Teaching, Binder shows readers how to make the first day of a class memorable, engage with students and make a lasting impression, improve one's teaching techniques and skills, prepare students for multiple choice and essay exams, and much more. Binder also emphasizes the importance of adopting new-age technology in classes, such as using AI to create interactive modules and write prompts, and integrating social media and other internet platforms into the curriculum to make the learning process dynamic.

It doesn't matter whether you're taking the first steps in your teaching career or are already an experienced veteran. Innovative College Teaching is a must-read for anyone who loves to teach regardless of their chosen subject/department. While the first part of the book focuses on Perry Binder's own teaching process that he has developed over the years in this profession, the second part contains interviews with different professors from the fields of law, science, arts, business, and technology, as they answer and offer their expert advice on five specific topics related to teaching and education. They talk about their inspiration to teach, their teaching methods, and how they continue to improve on their teaching techniques. This is an educational book for teachers to hone their skills further. I found it very informative, relevant, and motivational, and I highly recommend it.
