In "Deceitful Above All Things," Charles Hack ventures into the mystery genre, showcasing his versatility as an author with a departure from his previous science fiction series. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Lake Tahoe and its surrounding wilderness, Hack crafts a narrative rich in atmosphere and suspense. This novel introduces Hank Lin, a former Army Criminal Investigator and injured vet, who, after returning to his childhood home to heal from both physical and emotional wounds, finds himself entangled in a complex murder mystery.

Hank's budding relationship with Deputy Sierra McLean adds a dynamic layer to the storyline, blending mutual respect with undercurrents of romantic potential. Their chemistry is palpable, providing a counterbalance to the novel's darker themes. Truckee, another standout character, delivers humor that not only lightens the narrative but also demonstrates Hack's skill in weaving multifaceted characters.

The plot itself is a well-constructed blend of murder, mystery, action, and suspense, keeping readers on their toes with twists that are as unpredictable as they are thrilling. Hack navigates the fine line between darkness and light with ease, ensuring that the humor and burgeoning relationships enrich the story without detracting from the gravity of the crime being investigated.

"Deceitful Above All Things" is not just a murder mystery; it's a foray into what it means to start over, confront inner demons, and the importance of community and connection. Charles Hack is indeed an author to watch, bringing a unique voice to Christian fiction that promises to invigorate the genre with stories that resonate with a wide array of readers. This book is a call to those yearning for something new and different in their reading repertoire, offering an experience that is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining.

Fans of suspense and mysteries or those of you wanting to read something out of your typical genre— look no further than this exciting and gripping story that is completely clean yet packed with adventure and thrill! Grab a strong cup of coffee and get ready for a trip to the scenic shores of Lake Tahoe! ☕️

This story is packed with twists and turns, putting clues together like a puzzle and moments of great tension. With much anticipation I’d race on to the next chapter, unable to wait and see what new piece of information would be uncovered! I kept finding myself wanting to yell out to Hank and Sierra- please BE CAREFUL! 😬😅 Would Hank or Sierra find the killer before the killer found them?!

The colorful cast of characters were a lot of fun to get to know, too. Hank: who was so relatable in his struggles and thoughts… I was rooting for him throughout the story. He’s a good guy, who is helpful to a fault. He wants to help Sierra as much as he can, not thinking twice about putting himself in harms way. Then there’s Truckee: Sierra’s sarcastic, yet loyal partner. He is so funny, you’re guaranteed to laugh at his snarky one liners. And Pastor Mason, who is Hank’s buddy, rounds things out with his practical advice and wisdom. The others were just as lively and great which really made their small town come to life.

Faith is woven in by means of Sierra, Pastor Mason, and Hank’s sister. Hank is not a believer and he’s extremely skeptical. But he’s surrounded by those who stand strong in their faith. So as readers we get two very different inside perspectives on how Hank and Sierra internally process and think about things.

Hank’s active and curious mind is mulling over the things he hears repeated about Christianity, causing him to really think things over about his own life. I love the messages of hope and faith throughout.

This is the first book in the Hank Lin series and I can’t wait to see what Hank’s next adventure is.

Content: murders, dead body described. No language or sexual content!

This is a new author to me. I had never even heard of him before I ran across this book, but it sounded good. So here I am leaving a review for it. :)

First let me say how refreshing it is to read a book by a male author that features a male character. I have read a few lately, but it is far more common to have a female be the main character.

And Hank is a great character. No, he is an awesome character. Chinese - well, half Chinese - that is not too common either. He isn't perfect, but is extremely likable. He is also not a Christian, but has his sister and his best friend who is a pastor working to change that.

He is accompanied by a great cast of characters, including the possible future sheriff, Sienna, and her fellow deputy, Truckee. (Yeah, that is really his name 😀). And of course Bo, the dog he inherited off his dad.

The book starts out rather mundane (not boring), with a funeral. Then it doesn't take long for the discovery of the dead body. And things pick up. Hank investigates on his own - he had been some kind of investigator in the military before he got injured - and he ruffles some feathers and has some difficulties.

This is more of a decent paced mystery instead of a fast paced with chases, etc. That said, it is a great read that is extremely well written. The author did an excellent job of keeping the bad guys a surprise. I was sure early on who killed the guy, but that theory got shot down a couple chapters later. Literally. 😎

I enjoyed the book. A lot. It is a book that I didn't want to put down, but had to because of work.

There is no romance in this novel, though there is a hint of interest between Hank and Sierra, so that may be something that develops later in the series.

The author has created a great setting for his series, and created a perfect main character in the imperfect Hank Lin. I am definitely looking forward to reading more about this wanna be sleuth and his adventures. Hack has hit it out of the ballpark with his debut Christian fiction novel.

Special thanks to the author for an advance copy of this book. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.

I enjoyed reading this novel. It may be slightly on the longer side conpared to others in its genre but it reads so smooth it didn't feel like it and that's a plus, because we get more time with these fun characters. The plot kept revealing little details about whodunnit which encourages the reader to try to figure the mystery out for themselves. I solved it right before the big reveal which was so much fun.
On a reread you can even find smaller hints to the overall plot that can be missed the first time through.
It perfectly fit in the small town murder mystery genre and I cannot wait for this team to return

If you love small town murder mysteries you will enjoy ‘Deceitful Above All Things’.
This book had a lot of twists and turns, lots of suspense, and I really liked the faith elements. Overall I really enjoyed this book. It did seem a little long and I was more than ready for a resolution by the end. At times the conversations seemed a bit stilted, which pulled me out of the story. That aside, the book itself was well written and full of vivid descriptions. I found myself invested in the different characters. I’m interested to see how the series develops.

Being from Northern Nevada, I loved the way the author described Tahoe and local areas. I was rooting for certain characters early on. It’s a bit of a thriller, although it’s not lighting speed, which is okay. It didn’t drag. It was also nice not reading a lot of cursing or descriptive gore, and hints of faith built in the dialogue, but not cram it down your throat religious. It kept me interested and I look forward to reading the second in the set.

laugh out loud

I purchased this because of the setting-local for me. It turned out to be a fine adventure reminiscent of some British murder mysteries set in country villages. Quirky characters who make missteps, take wrong turns, but in the end get the villain. I can’t wait to try book 2.

Overall disappointed. The other reviews looked good but I guess most of them were paid for or had received the book free. Characters were poorly defined and the writing was quite amateur / dull in places. Gave up after I had endured it for far too long.
