Carter Brothers #2

I Can't Even

Rate this book
Ellodie Cassandra Solaire made a single, solitary New Year’s resolution.

That resolution was set in stone, and she wouldn’t be breaking it, no matter what.

It was simple: Say yes to every person who asks her out on a date until she finds a boyfriend.

Easy, right?

Wrong.

She breaks that New Year’s resolution three months into the year after a guy gives her serial killer vibes.

Fast forward three months, and she’s unhappily saying yes to any man who asks.

Until one day, there she is, eating a chicken burrito waiting for traffic to clear, and he appears like a knight in shining armor.

One second, she’s counting down the seconds until the parade dissipates so she can go home, and the next, a car is flying through the air directly beside her, courtesy of a hot cop performing a PIT maneuver.

It’s during the middle of the arrest when Quaid Carter’s eyes find hers.

From that moment on, she’s lost to anyone else but him.

The only problem is that serial killer vibe she got off of her potential date a few months ago isn’t just a vibe. It’s a full-blown obsession. And the serial killer decides that she won’t be the one to get away.

Quaid Carter has different ideas, though.

The title says it all🥹

Wow, this book was intense and realistic with a side of scary. Ellodie is a nurse at the hospital and she’s made a New Year’s resolution to accept all date requests…but each date is worse than the last😭 That is until she spots a car chase and sees Hot Cop aka Quaid Carter.

Quaid realises after a few encounters with Ellodie that she just might be the woman for him. He just needs to keep her protected from an obsessed serial killer, but hey, he’s definitely the Carter for the job😍

Such a good story that kept me engaged ALL the way through…I received an advanced copy and voluntarily leave my honest review❤️‍🩹

These two are such a fun read! This is the 2nd book in this series and it just gets better and better!! The intensity and the scary angsty storyline will keep you completely entertained. The chemistry and side characters just add to the story. These siblings are pure gems of entertainment. This book couldn’t be more appropriately named, seriously it is perfect!! Ellodie has her quirks, but her feistiness has me loving her immensely. Quaid may fall first, but these two both give us great banter and a great story. Lani weaves great emotional stories. This series might be just as fantastic as some of her others. These characters are extremely likable and the stories just suck you in.
I highly recommend this book. Told in dual POV.

This one really had a great first meeting between the couple! I loved how Ellodie watched it all happen and sat their quietly eating her snack. From there her and Quaid were cute. A few moments here and there with big impressions until all of a sudden they were a thing. It sucked that part of why they moved so fast was due to the threat against Ellodie, but it was a great way for Ellodie to get to know all of the Carters as she seemed to always have one of them babysit her.

Things got dicey at the end. I hated that Ellodie was hurt, hated it more how Quaid found her and all that was at stake. It was nice to see things end well and to see the couple happy living their lives.

On a side note, I laughed and fully supported Ellodie's reason for choosing her new job. There are worse reasons for sure, but there should always be some sort of bonus when you are working for the man!

Ellodie Solaire made a promise to date any man who asks, now she is dating a man she abhors. Deciding she is done she goes about her day not expecting to see a cop in a chase that revels what you see in an action film. Ellodie doesn't expect Quaid Carter to notice her though and he does. Quaid is certain that Ellodie is going to be his girl he just needs to everyone else know she is off limits.

Loved this, series is getting better if the second book is an indicator. I thoroughly enjoyed the introduction between Ellodie and Quaid. Cannot wait to read the next book.

This was a really quick, but really great, read. LLV books are what they are, and sometimes they’re just what is needed.
The characters were sweet and funny and the action was unrelenting. .
It’s been a while since I’ve read any Vale books. I’ll be reading more of this series.

This is the first LLV review I've ever done that wasn't an automatic five star rating. I have got to stop kidding myself: Her work has been going downhill for a long time now. I just don't want to admit it because she's my comfort author. I struggled through this book. I could not get into it. Every piece felt like a been there, done that. Many of the sections were, "What is the point of this?" I started this book July 16th. It's September 4th right now. I did the audio version. THE AUDIO VERSION. All I had to do was listen to it, and I still didn't want to.

You know that I only have an Audible subscription because of her? I don't see a point any longer. I'm just not that interested anymore if I want more regurgitated stuff. She needs to slow the f#%k down, stop pumping out a bazillion books a year and concentrate on making books that aren't rehashes.

Oh, and the ending...I read all of that for that ending. SMH. Sure, it was an HEA. But at what cost? At what cost? Definite trigger warnings all around for .

Anyhow, I'm taking a break. Maybe forever. If I do an LLV review, it'll be for the oldies because I have a bunch I haven't reviewed yet. I'm not doing anymore new ones. I'm tired, so tired.

Oh, and she's using the same covers too! This is the same exact model pose for Fun House, just with tweaks. We're pushing out books so quickly and with so little effort that we can't even get new cover model pictures.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

I have to go ahead and say that I got a little freaked out reading this book late at night in the dark hearing every little noise that my house makes. So this book will have you on edge during certain parts. Be prepared!! This is the second book in the Carter Brothers Series and I loved reading it. It is the story of Ellodie and Quaid. Ellodie has made a New Year's Resolution that she intends to keep. Go out with any guy that asks her out until she finds the one. However, things don't go exactly has she had it planned in her head when she made the resolution. She has been on some really horrible dates either with men that give off serial killer vibe or a bunch of won't work or other things that make them less then desirable. However there is one copy that keeps showing up at times and she can't ignore him. All she wants to do is hang out with Quaid. These two run into each other at the most bizarre times or in those circumstances. He wants to get to know her but he also knows that she is in extreme dangers. There is a serial killer on the loose and his next victim is Ellodie. Can the Carter Brother's keep our Ellodie safe or will the obsession he has with her prove to be too strong for anyone to stop?
See I told you you are going to be a little freaked out reading this book. And that's not a bad thing. If I am so engrossed in a book I am hearing noises and stopping to listen and figure out what it is then I know that I am really invested in a book. This one has it all. And attraction that is pure fire. Two people that so belong together. A serial killer that is a straight up psychopath. Hot cops. Good girls. And two characters you are going to be rooting for the entire time. Oh and I can't forget the banter. I always thing the banter in a LLV books is amazing. You do not want to miss this book.

I don't want to jinx myself, but two books in and Lani Lynn Vale's Carter Brothers series is exceeding my expectations. I Can't Even is the second novel in the series, and it features Quaid Carter, part of the triplets who are the oldest among the siblings and a sergeant in the Dallas Police Department who was in charge of patrol. He's paired with Ellodie Solaire, a nurse who has been in Dallas since she went to college nine years prior and is currently studying to get her nurse anesthetist license. She wouldn't mind having a boyfriend as well, but that's easier said than done, especially when there are far more frogs than there are princes. And Quaid Carter? Well, he's no prince... he's all hot cop. And Ellodie? Well, as much of a walking, breathing calamity she may be, Quaid knows she's the one for him. The problem? Someone nefarious has set their sights on Ellodie as well.

Could these Carters be any more endearing or entertaining?! With this being only the second book, I confess that I'm still getting the brothers confused, but Quincy and Quaid have obviously left quite an impression with their respective books being released. Quaid and Ellodie were a fun couple to get to know. He was uber protective of her, and that was even more understandable given the fact that there was a stalker slash serial killer out there who considered her the one who got away...and not in a romantic, "aww!" kind of way. Lani Lynn Vale brings the romance and the suspense, and she doesn't skimp on either one. Oh, and let's not forget the heat, which Vale offers up to readers generously. She kept me on my toes with this book, especially with that darn twist, and she's certainly has me coming back for more because I cannot wait for book three. 4.5 go to I Can't Even.

When Ellodie made a New Year’s resolution to go on a date with any guy that asked her out until she found “the one,” she had no idea how bad that decision could prove to be. Not only has she been out with a bunch of boring losers, one even gave off serial killer vibes. But when fate keeps tossing a “hot cop” in her path, she realizes her resolution is done for, since she only wants to hang out with him.

Quaid Carter can’t seem to stop running into the same woman in the most bizarre circumstances. And, all he knows is he’d like to get to know her better. But, when he realizes that there is a serial killer on the loose and she’s a target, things get hot and heavy pretty fast . . . and he isn’t mad about that, as long as he can keep her safe.

But can the entire Carter clan keep Ellodie out of the killer’s hands, or will his obsession prove to be deadly?

I Can’t Even was a whole lot of fun! The way that Ellodie and Quaid keep running into one another is hilarious and their banter is amazing from first glance. Lani did a fantastic job of balancing the humor with a literal serial killer on the loose in this book. Ellodie is sassy and independent and isn’t going to wait for anyone to do something for her that she can do herself, and I was there for it. And, Quaid is there for it too! I also adored that all of the Carter’s banned together to help keep Ellodie safe . . . getting to know the brother’s a bit more has me even more excited for their books!

Grab your snack cake of choice and dive in, because I Can’t Even does not disappoint! 5 stars!

Quaid and Elodie’s book!! Ok for some reason I am digging the meet cutes in this series. They all meet during some sort of police thing or somthin, like Quincy and Hollis met when he was out for a call and Quaid and Elodie met during a car chase. After they meet Quaid realizes that Elodie is connected to this serial killer and she was actually one of his targets. This makes Quaid go all protective over her and his family and him start watching over her.

I really liked the stalker/serial killer aspect of this book. It really added some plot and suspense. I also loved how protective it made Quaid of her.

I said it in my last book review but the family dynamic the Carter’s have is so amazing. They all lean on each other for support and they’re not afraid to ask each other for help. I really am excited to see all of the brother’s books.

Quaid and Elodie were great characters. Elodie was kind but also not a push over and stood up for herself. Quaid is the guy who want to make sure everything is good and hates it when he makes a mistake. When you put Quaid and Elodie together you get the trope of ‘I can do it and I know you can but I can do it for you’

When Elodie got hurt I was out of my seat and litterly had to close my book 10 times because of Quaid. It was like his whole soul was ripped out. It literally broke me. And the whole plot twist of it being the doctor had me shooook.

Overall this book had me on the edge of my seat. Can’t wait for Quinn’s because I need to see what this whole gang stuff is about.

I received a complimentary early release e-book prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is the second book in this series, and it stars one of the triplets, Quaid. He is a cop and Elodie is a nurse at the local hospital. They meet when he is on a chase and then they keep running into each other. They both become fascinated with each other and that's when the fun really begins.

There is a side plot which gets more traction as you read the story and that is that there is a serial killer out there that meets women on the internet and then sets dates with them. Elodie is brought into the case when it's discovered that she didn't meet the killer because he tried to get her to meet him in an unsafe environment. This is a big help in trying to find and arrest him and she becomes integral to the case.

There is very violent scene in this book and its very well written. No one can inject violence into a story like this author and I was definitely surprised by who was the bad guy. Aside from that violent scene this was a really awesome story and I loved watching the romance develop between Quaid and Elodie. I also adored watching both families meet and I loved the family scenes.

Whenever I read a LLV book I never want it to end. I just get totally lost in the characters and their families.

Elodie is a nurse in the ER, studying to be an anesthetist nurse (mostly to get a better parking spot lol) Her resolution this year is to go in every date she gets asked on. However that is not working out so well for her. Every guy she goes out with is a bigger loser than the previous one.

Then she meets Quaid while he was chasing a suspect and seems that maybe her luck is changing... well until she finds out that she nearly became a victim of a serial killer...

After running into Elodie a few times Quaid kind of thinks he met the woman he wants to spend his life with. Now all he needs to do is protect her from a serial killer...

Totally loved this story from the start to the ends. I am loving the Carter family. They are just too much who wouldn't fall inlove with these men☺️

Elodie was funny and definitely could keep her own. Quaid was hot (Hot Cop as Elodie calls him) and he was sweet, protective and he was totally infatuated with her.

Loved th4 story, the romance, the drama and the suspense was just right. I can't wait to read the next brothers story🥰

I Can’t Even is the fantastic second book in Lani Lynn Vale’s latest series.

Lani Lynn Vale never fails to disappoint with making me laugh with her heroines. They are sassy and often say what they think without a filter. Lani definitely hasn’t failed this time around.

Ellodie Solaire, is an emergency room nurse at the local hospital who is sick of getting caught in the middle of gang wars in her ER. She also is sick of being alone so has declared that she will say yes to every date that is offered to her. I loved how relatable Ellodie’s character was. And I also loved that Lani shown a light on the struggles and how dangerous it can be to work in the emergency room of some major hospitals.

Ellodie finds herself stuck on the side of the road, waiting for a parade to pass so she can get home, when she finds herself sitting front row to the end of a police chase. She can’t believe her eyes when she sees the police officer that finally ends the chase, he’s beyond hot! And of course, is forever known as hot cop haha. Quaid Carter is from a huge family and is well known around his town for his civil service and that of his family. When he realises that the girl who caught his eye at the end of the police chase is now in the cross hairs of a serial killer, he can’t wait to get to know her more.

I loved the connection that was between Ellodie and Quaid. Quaid’s protectiveness was amazing and fierce. I also loved the nickname that he gave Ellodie from the very beginning.

Honestly, I loved everything that there was about this book and can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

You cannot go wrong with a Lani Lynn Vale book, and I Can't Even continue that run of loveable heroes and their women. Quaid Carter is the second Carter brother we are meeting, and when he sets eyes on Ellodie, it's instant attraction. One of the signature things about her novels is little to no angst, and I love that I can read her books in one sitting and not want to throw my Kindle because the characters are ratcheting up the angst. Quaid and Ellodie get involved, and the suspense begins when a serial killer targets Ellodie. In the meantime, we get to enjoy Quaid and Ellodie falling in love and learning to live with each other. We also get to know the other Carter brothers a bit more as we head deeper into the series. The characters are great; if you love Lani Lynn Vale, you will love this one. It's a fast-paced ride that leaves you breathless but very happy and hankering for the next Carter Brother book. You do not need to read this series in order, it would help. But I say, why not read them all and enjoy each and every one of the Carter Brothers?

Thank you, Give Me Books Promotions and Lani Lynn Vale for the ARC. These opinions are my own.

I Can’t Even is book 2 in the Carter Brothers series by Lani Lynn Vale. The story focuses on Ellodie a young woman who has made a resolution to say yes to any dates that she is asked on, even when one of those dates comes from a serial killer. Fast forward to her meeting Quaid Carter during a police chase, their eyes meeting, the sparks flying, and the rest is history. Well, not quite and the feels just keep coming.

Quaid and Ellodie have something that is real, passionate and full of laughter. Again, the Carter family are at the forefront of this book as Carter, Ellodie and his family try and figure out who is stalking women, keep Ellodie safe whilst embracing her into their family of mental-ness! There are laugh out loud moments, moments of angst, some super sexy moments and everything thrown in between. This was definitely a page turner with a great HEA at the end. I just can’t wait to read more of this series and see who ends up with who.

ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review. All opinions are my own. 😊

Lani Lynn Vale's "I Can't Even (Carter Brothers Book 2)" is a mesmerizing romance that truly defies description. Once again, Ms Vale delivers a gripping, heart-pounding story that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. She masterfully heightens the suspense and danger, making every page an exhilarating ride.

The chemistry between Carter, the hot, uniformed policeman, and Elodie, the sassy nurse with a troubled dating history, is electrifying. From the very start, their connection crackles with intensity, drawing readers into their world. this author balances tension with laugh-out-loud moments, showcasing her talent for blending romance, humor, and suspense seamlessly.

Elodie's dating decisions might not have been the most thought out with but her budding relationship with Carter is full of promise and passion. However, their path to happiness is threatened by a dangerous serial killer determined to shatter their happily ever after. Carter's unwavering dedication to protecting the woman who has stolen his heart only adds to the story's allure.

"I Can't Even" is a thrilling, romantic rollercoaster that leaves you breathless, proving once again that Lani Lynn Vale is a master of her craft.

I probably sound like a broken record but this was another unputdownable book by LLV. Quaid and Ellodie's story instantly grabbed my attention and I was consumed. The suspense is so good I was reading as quickly as I could. I loved Quaid and he was definitely the Carter for the job. I loved this story. The instant attraction, the off the charts chemistry, the humor, and the awesome characters. I am loving the Carter Brothers series and cannot wait for the next! ~Andrea

"Overall Plot: 7/10
Characters: 7/10
Predictable: 10/10
Spice: 1 🌶

The overall plot was cool and interesting however, it was extremely predictable. There were also times where I caught myself having to reread what was happening bc it skips ahead in the moment or day or whatever with little to no explanation. While Calamity and Hot Cop are definitely a great couple, there are SO many extra side characters that it's super hard to keep track of them all, which was annoying. This book isn't a spicy read if that's what you're looking for, but the plot was good enough that I didn't miss it too much.

3 stars overall, but I would still recommend " ~Kaci

Obsessed with the Carter brothers! I swear that LLV’s books just get funnier and quirkier as these characters come to life, and I can’t get enough! Ellodie is a nurse in the emergency room at the local hospital and keeps bringing to light the abuse they go through and the unsafe working conditions, although nobody will listen. Working to put herself out there, she decides she will say yes to every man that asks her on a date, no matter what. Insert Quaid, who is working on a joint case with the FBI on a potential serial killer, and it leads him right to Ellodie, the girl he has been continuing to run in to in various circumstances. This storyline had me on the edge of my seat – between the killer who had his sights set on Ellodie and the love story between these two. I was not expecting how this book ended, although I was glad that LLV gives them a HEA especially after the trauma, and I continue to not only love the Carter brothers individually, but their family as a whole. I can’t wait for the next book!

Ellodie and Quaid were just meant to be….. but their road to getting to a happy future was not an easy one!!!!

Quaid is a policeman who is trying to catch a suspect when he first encounters Ellodie. He runs into her again at the end of a disastrous date she’s had and the third time he’s at the hospital where she’s a nurse to investigate some thefts.
Each time there’s a spark, an interest and a definite connection.
These Carter men know what and who they want and I’m enjoying watching them try to catch the women they fall for.

Ellodie made a New Year’s resolution to go on dates to see if she could find Mr Right, she signed up to a dating app but it appeared that along with catching a few Mr Definitely-Not-Rights she might have also caught the interest of Mr Stalker-possibly Serial Killer and now she’s on Quaid’s radar for more than his attraction to her,

Although there’s a lot of heat and humour in the series this book, especially towards the end, was a hard read at times. There was a lot of bad stuff that happened and while I thought I knew who the monster was, LLV did well to make me second guess myself a time or two.

I’m enjoying this series. The Carter siblings/family are entertaining, are all up in each others business but they’re a tight group who have each others backs (and that of their significant others) when things get tough.

Looking forward to the next book in the series.

The best meet cute EVER! Man oh man! When the "Hot Cop" meets "Calamity" all bets are off! I have read so many great meet cutes, but Quaid and Ellodie's are hands down, top of my list. (chef's kiss)
The two exude chemistry from the first moment their eyes meet in the middle of a take down and it only grows from there.

If I've said it once, I know I've said it a hundred times when it comes to an LLV story, but each new one becomes my favorite lol. I have a feeling with this series I won't be able to pick a favorite. I adore each and every Carter and especially the chaos that surrounds this family. I loved how Ellodie just slid right in like she's always belonged and especially how she managed to get a snack cake from each and every brother LOL!

As always, I loved every minute. The story is full of family, laughter, love, LLV's quirky humor, and as always, that tad of suspense that's just enough to keep you on your toes. If you haven't read an LLV book before, I highly recommend all of her books. You won't be disappointed.

5 Dating Can Be Dangerous Stars!!

With each brother that we’re introduced to in this new series I love this family more and more. Quaid is the focus of this book and depending on how she looks at it, Ellodie has become his sole focus thanks to the fact that a date she turned down is now setting his sites on her and not just for a date!

Ellodie is a girl after my own heart. She’s independent, focused and determined, in her own way to right some wrongs in her community. When Quaid focuses on her she thinks she’s been caught but it’s so much worse than that. Their witty banter had a smile on my face from beginning to end. I loved that she speaks her mind and little does she know that she’s Quaid’s and he’ll do whatever it takes to not only protect her but also convince her that the simmering chemistry between them is worth all the risks.

This is a quick read and the suspense element is exactly what I love about an LLV story. When you add in the connection between our H/h and all the family members that have thoughts on their relationship and all the goings on in the police department and it’s an excellent read and I highly recommend starting this series as soon as you can!

I think I found my new best friend and she is a book character. Ellodie had me laughing so much about her say yes to everyone who asks her out on a date. Some of the guys made me cringe.
Well she does end up breaking this resolution when one guy gives her the hebbie jeebies and she tells him no. Little does Ellodie realize by saying no to that guy, he now is laser focused on her and ends up being the serial killer she keeps hearing about.
Lucky for her she meets her knight in shining armor while being stuck in parade traffic, Quaid Carter. These two end up running into one another a lot more since the first encounter. And when the serial killer sets his sights on Ellodie, Quaid steps in to protector. SWOON!!!
The chemistry between theses two you can feel coming off the pages. You also get more Carter family banter which is hilarious.
Can not wait till the third book in this series. I am loving these Carter men

This story was fantastic and so much fun the characters were amazing. It's such a fun series and we thoroughly enjoy it. Elodie and Little Serial Dater was so much fun.

Elodie was my favorite character she was fiercely independent and had a wicked sense of humor, so sweet kind, and loving and sometimes lived in the grey area. She was a rule breaker for sure. We loved the chemistry she and Quaid had it was beautiful and passionate and they were so fun together and perfect for one another.

Quaid aka Hot Cop is such an awesome character we fell in love with his character from the moment in the restaurant and his moment with Elodie was priceless.

It is an awesome read with love, romance, witty banter, suspense, and protective men. We loved the Quiads family they are an awesome bunch and they never fail to make us laugh. We wore a permanent smile on our faces the entire time and those laugh-out-loud moments were fantastic.

I just want to say that I am in LOVE with this new series!! Book two was so far my favorite, I know it’s only book two but I loved Ellodie and Quaid’s story.

The way Ellodie and Quaid meet isn’t something out of a romance book but what was a police chase in the middle of a parade. Well, I guess they didn’t meet per se but let the stalking begin!!

Ellodie is a nurse that doesn’t try to attract attention unless it’s from Quaid. She is quite the badass that can handle her own and actually made a New Year’s resolution to date any man that asked her out. Thank goodness she me Quaid when she did.

Quaid is one of many of the Carter brothers on the police force When his eyes met with Ellodie’s he knew she was the one. He was protective from the start.

I love these two together and I love how the whole family is involved in the series as well. It was a fast fun read that has a lot of reality in the book.

Who are Ellodie and Quaid? How do they know or meet each other? What does each do for a living? What I learned about Ellodie right at the beginning of the book was fascinating. When she got stuck in traffic, and, grabbed food, sat down outside to eat it, then watching the police chase was so fun with what happened. I was laughing so hard. I loved the nickname the officer gave Ellodie!!! Who is Hollis? How does she know Elodie? How was her date with Frederick? What puts Ellodie on Quaid's radar? When Ellodie is over at the Carter family's house, the scene with the Little Debbie Snack Cakes is so much fun. I laughed so hard that I set my asthma off. Who is FarmerJoe122? There were juicy bits that were steamy, some that were crazy, others that were tense, and finally, some really scary moments. I did not expect who was behind what was going on. Read and see what happens!

Listen, when Lani put the "hot cop" sliding across the hood of a car after a police chase, I just KNEW that I was gonna love this couple! Who doesn't remember the viral pictures and video of the police officer pulling the suspect out of the car after a high speed chase? No one can forget that. I love how Lani finds a way to incorporate real stories/events/happenings into the lives of her characters. She also is great at making the female lead a strong, independent, and sassy lady. The male lead is always an big hearted; secret softy; alpha male that just loves his woman for who she is. Ellodie and Quaid are no different. Ellodie: Strong, Independent, Sassy. Quaid: Big hearted, Secret Softy, Alpha male. I highly recommend this book and all of her others. She is a fabulous writer and brings all of her stories, characters, and their love to life.
