Love, passion and possession captured by her lens.
Mem Swan stands reluctantly at the precipice of stardom. As Hollywood’s newest darling, she struggles to come to terms with the mercenary nature of the industry. Beauty equals money – and Mem’s is worth billions – but she longs for someone to see her. Really see her.
Enter Thea Voronov, an acclaimed portrait photographer whose work captures the souls of stars and catapults them to fame. She is ice cold, a complex tempest of talent and mystery, and she’s seen far too many pretty young things eager to exploit the power of her lens.
When Mem steps into Thea’s studio, an unexpected spark ignites and Mem becomes her muse. It’s a role that binds them both in an intense dance of desire, domination and inspiration. In the exacting pull of Thea’s focus, they explore connection and creativity, limits and love, every shot leading them deeper into each other.
But as Mem’s star ascends, the lures of the industry beckon. For Thea, scarred by a past littered with opportunists, Mem’s rise echoes with narratives she’s long despised. Doubt becomes a deep shadow that blurs the image of the woman she’s come to adore.
Can the love that flourished in the darkroom survive the glaring spotlight of fame?
This book is part of the She Demands Perfection series but, like the others, is a standalone. The books may be read in any order.
Jolie Dvorak likes to write steamy, angsty romance featuring women who fall hard and love harder. When her first book was released, she revealed that ‘Jolie Dvorak’ was, in fact, the pen name of another sapphic romance author and challenged readers to guess who. This led to some very lovely compliments and quite a few long, funny conversations, but Jolie’s true identity remains a secret. If you think you know, send an email to hello (at) joliedvorak (dot) com with your theories. Gold star if you get it right.
Dvorak delivers another sizzling romance. A photographer's studio - the scene for business and pleasure. Thea Voronov, world renown photographer extraordinaire. Her work constantly in demand, she makes careers and adds millions to the coffers of countless businesses. Her commands brook no resistance in her public or private life. For all the glamor and power, women at her beck and call, Thea feels empty and hides deep set insecurities. She reluctantly accepts a contract to photograph Memona (Mem) Swan a beautiful, rising starlet. It's a twofer since she'll also photograph an ex lover - the actress Dame Kate Cox. Cox and Swan recently finished a movie together and it's all about publicity! There's also a possible deal with CreatedDiamonds, company making exquisite lab generated "green" diamonds. D'vorak's Thea is uncharacteristically unsure when Mem and her first meet. Mem's submerged inclines written as slowly clawing to the surface. In short order the photographer and her muse come to an agreement. The longing on both sides sometimes tempered with unusual gentleness from Thea and tender yet cheeky submission from Mem. There is exploitation, greed, bliss and torrid sex, filters, shadows and lights to this storyline as it plays out as if in front a camera. A flame burns bright but could it burn out? As one gains confidence the other falters. The supporting cast specifically Jasper, Kate, Yelena/Lena and Lollie push the layered narrative along with Mem's steadfast best friend Piper.... I wanted Thea to trust, accept Mem's love, a balm for her soul and give unconditional love in return. There is a subtle tenderness to the author's latest book but you must read to find out. Easily recommend with 5 stars.
I really wanted to like this - and there were some aspects that were fine, but unfortunately I just couldn’t get past how awful I found Thea. I get the trauma history, I get why she did the things she did, I get her whole vibe - I just didn’t like it. At times she was cruel and manipulative (and quite frankly a bit predatory), and I found it hard to empathise with her the entire way through.
Glorious. Another fabulous read from the wonderful Jolie Dvorak! I was so completely captured from the beginning that I had to wait a bit to finish another story so I could just devour this on its own. And devour I did. This author has a way of writing that pulls you in so thoroughly that you could be sitting next to a character or want to hug or slap a character in a scene. You feel the highs. You feel the lows. The passion and chemistry between our MCs is explosive and also sweet. Just palpable and glorious.
Enthralled, I loved, however, Ensnared and now Captured- are now and will forever live rent free in my heart and mind. Highly recommend!
All I can say is Wow. I almost gave up on this book since it was too insta love for me, but I persisted and I'm so glad I did. This was one intense read. I felt the MC's connection leaping off the page. It has splashes of eroticism but that didn't take away from the depth of the story at all, in fact it augmented it. This is my second book from author and I can't wait to read what she comes up next.
Ahhh! This was my first Jolie Dvorak read and I devoured it. If you love out of this world gorgeous women, satisfyingly OTT glamourous escapism and hot BDSM dynamics you need to read this immediately. Mem is a gorgeous character and Thea has a fascinating dark back story and the dynamic between them is super satisfying. There's also some great, morally grey side characters that add fabulous colour to this story. Damnit, now I’m going to have to read more of this collection!
Jolie Dvorak created a completely flawed woman and her muse majestically. These characters you watch grow and enjoy their abounding chemistry. This is angsty. The angst is well resolved. I loved this book as well as the other in the series. I hope these books will continue, and I will continue to follow Dvorak.
This drove me insane in a good way. The premise of this interested me from the get-go, famous photographer meets beautiful up and coming actress?? Count me in. I definitely went in with assumptions and expectations on how it would play out, and the story really didn't disappoint, It kept me engaged and curious throughout. I loved how all of it connected, like how there wasn't any redundant information mentioned or plot device used to move the plot, It all felt purposeful, and i loved it. The romance development between the main characters, Thea and mem had good pacing, and their chemistry was undeniable. Also, all the BDSM aspects just made it hotter. The book isn't all sunshine and rainbows. There are dark parts in the book that involve a lot of feelings of self-loathing, and it just wasn't pretty. Going into this, you must know that the characters are all not perfect. They have their faults, and the shit they did enraged me for a bit, but it didn't last. Kate and jasper were a bit dysfunctional at times, but overall, they cared. I came to a realisation that all of the issues could have been avoided if they had communicated a little. Like all of them. And i could have avoided tearing up at certain scenes. But oh well, this was what made it intoxicating to read. Overall, i loved this book, 4.5 stars.
This is my second book by Dvorak and I really enjoyed the first. The authors writing style is lovely and engaging and spicy with decently written dom/sub dynamics.
This book... well, it felt really predatory, honestly. I hate Kate. I hate Jasper. They are both insanely gross and manipulative and exploitive. Kate takes on this sort of mentor role for Mem and she's written in a way that I think it supposed to make her look like she's a decent person, but she's not. Her and Jasper prey on Mem, getting her drunk and manipulating her (or Thea) to do something she has explicitly stated she does not want to do. There is this scene early on at a party and I was literally curling my lip in disgust the whole time reading. It gave me the vibe of men trying to roofie a woman at a bar. Ick.
Then they both just burst in on them while they're having sex, laughing and taunting them. Thea and Mem laugh it off or whatever, but man... I was super uncomfy reading it.
Thea.. I mean.. c'mon. Grow a backbone. She realizes she's kind of a terrible person and what she is doing is awful and she hates herself for it but... just keeps on doing it. I can't even tell how she is friends with Jasper. He may have helped her in the past, but there is no sort of chemistry or camaraderie between them. She seems to think she owes him, despite saying multiple times that his success is due to her. What could she possibly still owe him?
Honestly, I wanted to finish this book just to see if there was any way they could possibly salvage these characters. Thea's backstory is not enough to excuse her behavior though and I finally realized that it doesn't matter how they try to explain it, Thea is way too toxic and I don't want her to get together with Mem regardless. Mem deserves better.
Wow! Oh Wow! Oh Wow! What else can I say other than that I was felt myself being sucked into the story the way Mem was drawn into the vortex that is Thea and vica versa.
Mem Swan has been reluctantly drawn to the precipice of Hollydom Stardom. All she wants to do is to see out her commitments for her current movie and then move on with the rest of her life, away from the mercenary nature of the industry that she has been sucked into because of her beauty. Thea Voronov is an enclaimed portrait photographer, renowned for capturing the souls of stars and catapulting them to fame. She is known for being icy with an eye for beauty but a heart of stone who uses women for her own selfish desires. She's full of self-loathing and believes that it is only a matter of time before everyone realises that she's a monster and her world comes crashing down around her.
I'll admit that during the early stages of the story I was initially confused as to why someone as dominant as Thea would be pressured into kowtowing to the demands from Kate and Jasper to seduce and use Mem to further their profits. However, as the story evolved and more of Thea's background and self-loathing was revealed it became apparent that she believes she is as monstrous as her father had been. However, despite this self-loathing, the tiny voice in her head keeps whispering that Maybe she's not so evil and that maybe Mem might just be the one who can free her from the past and make her whole again.
The two women's world colide in an intense dance of dominance, submission and desire as Thea comes to see the real Mem and Mem gradually draws out the real Thea to help her realise that she is not the monster that she has always believed.
In Captured in Her Gaze, Jolie Dvorak has written an powerful tale of letting go of ones demons to evolve into the person you are meant to be.
I received an ARC copy of Captured in Her Gaze in return for an honest review.
The art of teasing! My goodness, this BDsM romance had me in its grip for 24 hours! It's so intense and full of anticipation and longing. Mem and Thea's meeting is unusual because there is already a certain unknown but mutual obsession for one each other. For different reasons, of course, but undeniable. The desire is great and begins with hot words and promises that arouse a real fire. Initially just a flame that blazes before they even meet for the first time, it ignites a fire of sheer ecstatic passion for each other that questions everything else that previously seemed important in life. However, it's not just beautiful, hot and pompous. It is also tragic, sad and sometimes cruel. Just like the glittering world of the rich is like that. Everyone is exploited, especially the sweet and innocent ones. This all sounds very vague, I know. I'll briefly outline what this is about, but I don't want to give any spoilers. It would be a shame to spoil to much! It's dark too. Just like the famous photographer Thea Voronov is, dark and beautiful. A tsarina in her field, admired by everyone. Everyone falls at her feet and yet no one really knows her true, broken self. Until now! Memona Swan is an extremely beautiful woman and throughout her life, that's the only thing that the people in her life have been all about. She's so much more than that, but the film industry doesn't care about any of that. So she begins to use the money she earns from her unexpected acting career to do really good things and finds herself in the blazing gaze of Thea Voronov. In the gaze of these incredible eyes and also her camera that really sees everything! I highly recommend this book and not just for fans of Jolie Dvoraks. It’s a must for 2024!
Thanks to Jolie Dvorak for the ARC of this incredible book!
The ‘She Demands Perfection’ series just keeps getting better.
Brought together by Mem’s new acting career and Thea’s illustrious photography career, they need to produce some stunning photographs to promote Mem’s film. Thea quickly becomes enamoured with Mem, things become flirty and heated and it becomes obvious Mem is just as attracted to Thea. Their relationship develops over a number of weeks as Mem realises Thea does really like her, this isn’t just some meaningless fling. Thea decides that Mem is worth taking a chance on because she isn’t solely interested in her, because of what doors their relationship might open for her and her acting career and how much money she can get out of it. Their new relationship isn’t easy to navigate, especially with the press camped out at Thea’s house requiring a lot of sneaking about and assistance from Thea’s neighbour. Everything is good but almost falls apart for them due to secrets they are keeping from each other. Thea being made aware of something about Mem’s next film by someone other than Mem leads to her breaking up with her without giving Mem the opportunity to explain. Turns out they are both trying to achieve very similar things, in different ways and for different reasons. Jumping to conclusions can cause heartbreak, but will Thea give Mem the opportunity to see the record straight? This book is full of desire, heat, kink, heartache and love and is so worth reading, Mem and Thea are a fantastic couple. Their story gripping, entertaining and hot.
I liked this, eventually, at the end. This is my own bias showing; I struggle with celebrity stories. I don’t understand the obsession in reality and I barely tolerate it in fiction. This follows similar beats to Jolie’s previous work. There is an ice queen domme (this time a photographer) and a sweetheart sub (this time a rising starlet). The domme is full of swagger and self loathing while the sub is saccharine personified. The 🌶️ does indeed flow but I would still put this in a BDSM lite category. Most of the hardcore (⛓️💥) stuff is talked about in past or future tense. While I liked Mem (the sub) as a character, Theo was harder to tolerate. Yes, she has secret pain and trauma that is all revealed at the end but even with that, her choices are hard to empathize with. This will not end up in my re-read shelf. The setting itself of fame, fortune, divas and diamonds is not one I see myself coming back to.
This book was beautifully written. The characters were gripping and complex. From the very first page you’re in it. The attention to detail never wavered. You knew something was about to happen when Thea rolled up her sleeves. *chef’s kiss* The dynamic between Thea and Mem was so sensual it vibrated. The supporting characters were there being supportive. I enjoyed Lena (Mrs. Tits) personality, I hope to age like her. This author is a new favorite of mine. I haven’t been disappointed after reading any of her books. Check it out.
Jolie Dvorak does it again! Thea Voronov, a brilliant photographer, who let’s just say has come from a very interesting background and is extensively guarded except when it comes to sex. Memona Swan, an actress on the cusp of stardom. When these two women meet both of them things will never be the same. This story takes you on a journey that is both hot and intense and all the characters are wonderfully written. One of my favs apart from the MCs is Yelena. Do yourself a favour and go and get this novel!
Oh one last thing, I’d like to claim Jolie Dvorak as an Aussie but since she is an author of mysterious ways, I’m not sure I can. 😬
Who knew a story about a couple in a BDSM relationship could turn out to be so sweet?
Jolie Dvorak has penned a book covering a boat load of emotional trigger topics, mental health, trauma of the deeply emotional type, reading issues, celebrity status emotional roller coasters, did I miss anything? Some how each issue has been worked into this story and the triumph at the end is so worth the read. The characters are clever, the setting’s exciting and the writing just work so well together. Yeah, this is worth the time to read and support the author.
The absolutely glorious Thea Voronov and magnanimous Mem Swan shine brilliantly in this wonderful tale of lust, love, misunderstandings and forgiveness.
Compelling to the very end, this book is gripping! I love the way this author writes and her vision is portrayed perfectly! The way in which both Thea and Mem develop and thrive together is wonderful, despite their own personal challenges.
Read this book! (As Thea would say ‘that’s an order’!)
She's done it again, another incredible book. The characters are so real and raw. The book had me sobbing, smiling, and laughing. The story drew me in. I felt wholly submerged and waiting and wondering about what would come next. I can't say enough to truly do this book justice. You have to read it for yourself.
Intense from cover to cover. It was hard to put this book down to work and sleep. Thea and Mem fall for each other from the start. Thea has trauma from growing up with her father and thinks she is a monster like him. It’s up to Mem to convince her otherwise. Enjoy!
I had no idea this was even coming out until it showed up on my suggestions, and I'm so glad it did! Best one yet. I felt like all of my (few) complaints from the other two books were addressed in this one and the result was a well written enjoyable story that I will probably end up reading again.
Another great book by Jolie. It was lovely and 🌶️🌶️ as always. I loved the chemistry between all the characters. It’s true you make your own family. I would recommend
Your secret is out. I may not know your name, but you are a brilliant writer. If a reader wants to savour a well-written story that captivates, or should I say captures, you in its gaze, READ THIS BOOK!
No. Just no. Thea is awful. Horrible. There isnt a single redeeming quality about her. She's less of a dom and more of a predator. Kate and especially Jasper are horrible people too. Mem is wonderful and i don't understand why she would forgive any of them. She deserves so much better.
This is a fantastic, it is captivating and beautifully done. I loved it. 💖 The chemistry between these characters is Excellent, and it was a joy to read, a page turner. I definitely recommend this book.💯
Every now and then a book hits all the emotions and Jolie Dvorak masters this art. We enter the world of celebrities, paparazzi, trafficking and throughout a richness of the love of a Found family and hot romance. Well done
Good: The authors writing style is nice and the spice was nice.
Bad: Kate and Jasper are bad enough but the way Thea was the entire book was toxic. The lack of actual growth in her character was disappointing. It took away the enjoyment of watching Mem’s growth.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Everything is good until that dramatic break-up and after that...it almost feels like just finishing the book. Part 1 and Part 2 (most parts) were really good.
I adore this book. As I have the rest of Jolie Dvorak's books. She puts so much depth and angst into her stories. Mem does not enjoy her beauty. She wants to be seen for herself. Thea had a horrible childhood. And it left her with so many triggers. Thea is like a minefield with no path. But Mem's beauty calls to her like a siren. But can they be what each other needs. The supporting characters play a large part. All characters are fleshed out to where you know them. If you start this book, you will not be able to put it down. Highly recommend.
