Dollycas's Thoughts

We are back in English Village, Kansas. Josey Posey's next assignment for The Village Gazette is interviewing Ella McGregor Benjamin, a very skilled watch designer, who has come home to visit her father. Later Ella falls from a ladder while doing an inventory of the clocks in her father's store and is badly injured.

At the hospital, she regains consciousness long enough to say a few words before she passes away. Words that convey that her fall wasn't an accident. Now to determine just what those words mean. Police Chief Marshall wants Josie's help with that but doesn't want her butting into his case. Her boss at the Gazette wants a full-in-depth story as soon as possible. There is also someone who wants Josie to mind her own business.

Josie knows she doesn't have a lot of time but she is determined to catch the killer no matter how complications there are.

_____

After reading the first book in the series, Doomed by Blooms, I couldn't wait to read this one.

Josie and her “posse of biddies” also known as the Mahjong Mavens and her lovable sheepdog Moe are so much fun. Police Chief Marshall has apologized for calling Josie, Kate, Sharon, and Nellie "biddies" after he saw their efforts were helpful on his last case, so much so that he asks for Josie's help this time.  Josie is a great protagonist. She uses her talents learned as a reporter to ask the right questions, do the right research, and sort through all the clues until they make sense. Her friends are wonderful sounding boards but they sometimes come up with key information too. I love the way the author has written this group of women. They are vital with big hearts and they love mysteries. They also cook and bake up some delicious food.

I was drawn in by all the details of clock-making or horology. The victim had a dream of making a very valuable clock with many "complications" or features. In a time when hardly anyone wears watches anymore and clocks are mostly digital, and maybe because I love grandfather clocks and have a son that collects watches, it was like I fell down a rabbit hole learning about these fantastic timepieces. I love learning new things when reading cozy mysteries. It makes me feel smarter when I turn that final page with new terms and meanings added to my vocabulary.

With a victim whose life was all about a certain number of complications, the author has penned a very complicated mystery. Ella McGregor Benjamin's deathbed statement set off a wild investigation with several people having motives to kill the watchmaker. Clues were found in unique places including one that Josie's Moe uncovered. Josie's index cards with her notes were shuffled through many times as she tried to make all the clues fall into place. It was a "well-orchestrated" mystery that was very hard to solve. I sure wasn't playing the right tune or winding the watch. I was so caught up in the story that I think I fell for every misdirection and twist so I was surprised when everything was revealed.

While the clockmaking theme was interesting it was the people in this story that really shined. The small community of English Village is full of good people. The Mahjong Mavens are a tight-knit group that will always have each other's back. Josie also has a very good friendship with Harvey that is building into something more. She has a good relationship with the police chief too. Ms. St. John has created I place I would love to visit and people I would love to meet.

Clocked Out kept me on my toes from beginning to end. Engaging characters and a complex mystery took me on quite a journey. What I learned about timepieces was just icing on the cake. I am eager for the next book in this series and to meet up again with Josie, and the rest of her friends soon. Oh, and Moe too!

Finished Clocked Out! Josie Posey retired as a crime reporter in KC and is now an investigative reporter in a small town in KS. Josie interviews a watch/clockmaker who is one of the most talented in the industry. Later that day the watch/clockmaker falls from a ladder. Josie is on the case. Really enjoyable!

update: at 70%. Really enjoying this cozy mystery! I'd like to finish tonight, but I'm so tired ... I don't want to miss any clues. I love Josie Posey! What a great character. I'm fascinated with the world of clock/watch making and love this as the backdrop of this mystery.

I’m an early reader of Clocked Out and will provide updates every day. Enjoying Clocked Out so far, only able to read the first 7 chapters today (approx 20%). Really enjoying learning about watches and clocks and the process to learn that trade.

Thank you so much to author Anna St. John for the advance read copy!

I confess… I decided to read/review Clocked Out by Anna St. John strictly because of the cover. It’s absolutely adorable and I absolutely needed to meet that dog! I had a feeling I would love Moe, just from the cover, and I was right – Josie’s Old English sheepdog is everything endearing with a fun personality and ‘expressions’ I could easily picture as I read. And Josie herself looked like we would get along too… and we would if she were real or I were fictional. But what I didn’t expect was to be so charmed by English Village, the quaint small town that doesn’t let the fact that it’s located in the Midwest stop it from replicating all the cozy British vibes. I would love to visit a place like this – shoot, I’d love to LIVE in a place like this – so I really enjoyed touring the town on these pages, murder notwithstanding. The author does a good job of setting the scene without over-explaining, painting a lovely picture into which readers will gladly immerse themselves.

The murder mystery has several intriguing layers, mainly revolving around the world of clocks and watches (which turns out to be way more intricate and fascinating than I imagined). This was a unique premise for a cozy mystery, and I enjoyed the nice change-of-pace from the typical. Several surprises awaited me as I investigated along with Josie – from the comfort of my fave reading space, of course – and just about the time I thought I had things figured out the author’s clever plot threw me for a loop once more. It’s a laid-back narrative without a lot of unnecessary drama, and the fact that the police chief appreciates Josie’s investigative journalist mind makes her sleuthing go much more calmly than in some cozies. (She’s also pretty good at staying within the boundaries he gives her… mostly lol.)

Bottom Line: Clocked Out by Anna St. John was my first introduction to Josie Posey and her lovable dog Moe but I quickly felt at home with them and their charming English Village. The plot is creative and original, and the story flows smoothly at an easygoing pace. Combine all of the above with several unpredictable twists, a dash of sweet romance (with a handsome blacksmith – hello, swoon!), and a close knit group of vibrant friends and you’ve got an entertaining story that keeps you invested to the end. Grab your fave hot beverage, find a comfy reading space, and curl up with this fun mystery!

Clocked Out is book two in Anna St. John’s Josie Posey cozy mystery series, featuring retired investigative journalist Josie, her wonderful friends (the Mahjong Mavens), her handsome love interest, a curmudgeonly (in the best possible way) chief of police and most importantly, her darling Old English sheepdog Moe.

This book works well as a standalone for readers new to Josie’s series, but I encourage you to go ahead and download book one. As soon as I finished book one, I knew I needed to start at the beginning to hear about Josie’s first brushes with mysteries in English Village.

What a delightful read this was! It has all the elements I love in cozy mysteries–small town, wonderful friends and the perfect pet side-kick. While Josie is retired, she works freelance for the local paper and is assigned to interview Ella McGregor Benjamin, a local who has found great success in watch design and making. Ella is home for a spell and Josie enjoys interviewing her and learning about the details of this unique artform.

Unfortunately, only hours after Josie and Ella meet, Ella falls from a ladder in her family’s clock shop and suffers a head injury. She only regains consciousness for a brief moment (straining to share with the doctor her last words) and then passes away. What first appears to be a horrible accident is anything but.

Josie, who has a wonderful rapport with the Chief of Police, begins assisting him with the investigation. This takes Josie deep into Ella’s life, meeting with friends, studying her journals and piecing together her last words. As Josie closes in on the killer, threatening notes are left for her.

I loved following Josie's investigation. I felt that I was with her, writing on index cards and studying Ella’s tiny handwriting in her journal. The details describing English Village brought the place to life and I could picture myself walking around the park with Josie and Moe. This was a wonderful mixture of cozy elements and mysterious clues. I look forward to reading more about Josie. And I do wish I could give Moe a wonderful pat and a dog treat!

I really enjoy this series, it follows an older than typical MFC for a cozy but she doesn’t seem out of touch. I like her strong friend group and the fact that she is a retired reporter really lends to female sleuth of it all. However, her and Harvey have been dating for months and she refuses to even let him kiss her on the cheek? I’m sorry she just isn’t that in to him. The romance aspect always seems so badly handled in cozies, there is either a love triangle (why) or the couple moves soooo slowly cause she just want to go slow it leans towards not in to the guy(why). I don’t need graphic , I read romance for that, but I would tell my female friends to dump a dude’s butt if it was MONTHS and they still weren’t sure and needed to move slow. So Josie, please either dump him or start having feelings for him.

This book is pretty darn good. I haven’t read the first in the series, so I need a little backtracking to be formally introduced to the characters. But I like where they are headed in this one. I like that it’s an older crowd, which makes it stand out from the norm. I can’t wait to see why the law is comfortable with the meddling in this one. One thing I will say is I like the furbaby. A larger dog is a refreshing change.
The setting is visually appealing.
The pace is a decent rollercoaster ride. The action scenes are pretty well paced.
The knowledge on clockmaking is fascinating, and a great visual.
A Solid 4.

Another great Josie Posey mystery! The second book in this series, Clocked Out, follows Josie and her friends, the Mahjong Mavens, as they probe into the accidental death of a talented young clock designer.

Charming English Village is the perfect backdrop for this cozy mystery with its lovely shops, festivals, beautiful scenery, and friendly citizens. When Ella McGregor returns home to help out in her father’s clock shop, she suffers a deadly fall off a ladder. Her last words lead Josie to believe it wasn’t an accident. Three cryptic words are the clues that send newspaper reporter Josie, along with police chief Marshall on a hunt for a killer.

The discovery that Ella’s designs are worth a small fortune provides an obvious motive, but so do her relationships with family and friends, complex as the workings of the masterpieces she designs. With her loyal sheepdog Moe by her side, Josie remains brave when an unknown stalker warns her to back away from the case.

Like Murder She Wrote’s Jessica Fletcher, Josie is a curious, independent older woman who has a sharp mind for solving mysteries. And like Cabot’s Cove, English Village is a beautiful place to live—except for the murders. If you enjoy small-town cozies with a delightful amateur sleuth, Clocked Out is a perfect fit.

But there is so much more here to love. The information about clock making is an added bonus to the solving of the mystery. Just the right amount of researched details provide the reader with an education in horology. Juxtaposed with that are the delicious dishes served up by Josie’s friends, the recipes included at the end of the book.

What I find most enjoyable is the relationships Josie fosters in her small community. A nice blend of her close-knit female friends, the local police chief, her romantic interest, and her loyal sheepdog, assist Josie in her sleuthing and keep her safe.

Author Anna St. John delivers another delightful cozy crime story with lovable characters and an intricate plot with clues for the reader to unravel along with Josie Posey. A fun and entertaining read that will leave you eager for more of Josie’s adventures!

This was an okay mystery. Harmless.

I'm not sure I'm the right audience for "Cozies." I just can’t suspend my disbelief this much! Or for this long or for this many different things. An elderly, bent over man just casually mentioned thumb drives and the Cloud with no reaction from Josie or explanation of how he’s so aware of these things. Unrealistic! Now the police chief has her drive a suspicious package to the police station to have the bomb squad check it out…??? Oh for crying out loud!

I would probably have enjoyed this book more if I didn’t know how much she copied her own formula from the first book. Or are all cozies like this?

This author has a definite pattern:
---the victim is a bright, young woman who is impossibly talented and (supposedly) beloved by all
----how is it that this tiny Kansas town has produced so many supposed celebrities?
---a set of three vague clues or riddles
---a huge, ridiculous list of suspects, many of whom appear just in time to be introduced and to become suspects
---a police chief who calls to scold Josie for getting involved BUT also calls only when he has news that he really shouldn’t be sharing with a civilian; and can we talk about how DUMB the “investigation” is? Supposedly, Josie is helping by sharing what she knows about the victim or the suspect, but it's always childhood background or character traits, not EVIDENCE from the crime scene! Wouldn’t that be a bit more helpful?
---threatening phone calls

The bottom line: Stop letting this woman interview people! :) Harm always befalls them right after she’s interviewed them.

Took a bit to get into

This one took a bit to get into. I actually kept reading a chapter and putting it down for several months.
I read this as a stand alone, which was fine, but I found the background characters from the series tedious. Likely because I have a hard time with the way the "mahjong mavens" were miraculously the cool kids in town as well as having all that main character energy. It read like a teenaged trope, group name included. Everytime I read "mavens" I rolled my eyes and it pulled me out of the story a bit. For that, I took a star.
I finally forced myself to finish reading. Honestly, once you get past all of the recap and what I assume is supposed to be character developement tying this book to the series, the story holds up.
Solid mystery. Solid suspense building. Plenty of suspects in the pool to choose from.
A little drawn out for such a swift conclusion, but I don't mind that since we do walk away with everything solved and settled. Loose ends tied up in a tidy bow as it were.

I never imagined that anyone could take an obscure subject like horology—which, as I learned from this fine book, is the art of clock making—into a premise for a mystery. But that’s exactly what Anna St. John does in "Clocked Out," the second entry in her Josie Posie mystery series.

Local reporter and amateur sleuth Josie is tasked with interviewing Ella McGregor Benjamin, a master clockmaker whose fantastically complicated creations sell for millions of dollars. But when Ella dies in what appears to be a freak accident, Josie suspects murder. Thus begins a series of twists and turns in a plot as intricate and finely tuned as one of Ella’s clocks. Naturally, with the help of her friends, the Mahjong Mavens, and local Police Chief Marshall, Josie is able to find the killer's identity and restore order to English Village, but the journey is a blast.

Josie Posey is a journalist that has semi-retired to "English Village", Kansas. She works for the local newspaper and has a busy social life centered around some friends that call themselves the "Majong Mavens." For the second time, Josie and her friends become involved with helping the local police solve a murder. It's the first mystery I've read where Crocs are an integral part of the investigation!

A pretty light-weight cozy, but the townspeople and the mystery itself are entertaining; so the book provides a nice escape.

The plot thickens

The second book in a five book series leaves you wanting more. Although worth the read in its own right it brings the engaging personalities from the first book and leaves you wanting more. I hope I don’t have to wait another year to find out.

Cute book! True cozy mystery. Loved Josey and her dog. The author’s detailed words about English village made me want to live there , minus the murders!
