Lady Miranda Reynolds has finally decided to wed.

Once the most sought-after young lady in London during her first Season, Miranda is now deemed unsuitable. An unfortunate scandal, as well as her own lack of interest in marriage, has led to a limited field of suitors. She's narrowed her choice down to either a fortune-hunting dandy or an elderly rake.

Neither man is appealing, but Miranda is tired of waiting.

Colin Hartley, the Earl of Kilmaire would never return to the dubious bosom of the ton if he didn't need an heiress to replenish the Kilmaire fortunes. He's not particular about his future bride. The less he cares for her, the better.

Affection will not be involved. Colin gave his heart once with disastrous results. He doesn't want to see Miranda, the woman who spurned Colin so she could marry a future duke six long years ago.

Except Miranda didn't marry a duke. Or an earl. Or anyone, since she and Colin parted. Upon his return to London, Colin finds Miranda's reputation tarnished, and she's intent on marrying a gold digger who has terrible taste in clothing and wears too much pomade.

Colin shouldn't care whom Miranda marries. He can't forgive her.

If only he didn't still want her.

Another solid entry in the Wicked series. This one is set at a house party that the Dowager has organized under the guise of helping a friend of the family find a wealthy wife. The hero’s estates are in shambles and he promised his brother to set things right. The Dowager has invited a couple of wealthy prospects although she sees more between her granddaughter and the hero. Colin, the hero, is a part Irish Earl, lapsed Catholic and has a cursed past as in a mad as a hatter mother who tried to murder him then committed suicide. Not much to offer given the times. He’s a blonde Irishman, but his brooding scar and occasional Irish lilt make him irresistible. Even the Dowager admires his charming ways.

Miranda is on the shelf due to some heavy duty gossip that has pretty much derailed her options for marriage. No, not compromised, she shot her mother’s evil lover who was trying to murder Miranda’s half-brother and his pregnant wife.

Unfortunately, the hero and the heroine are at odds over something that happened six years ago. Yep, a terrible misunderstanding that kept them away. I will have to say that the onus is on the hero for being a big fat idiot.

I’ve read this series totally out of order, but the heroine, Miranda, is the daughter of the vile and evil Jeanette from the first book. The evil Jeanette is present in spirit only.

I’m not going to bother with more plot points, but let some of the characters speak for themselves.

The managing Dowager. If you loved Violet from Downton Abbey, look no further.

Donata allowed the barest whisper of satisfaction to cross her lips. Ridley, that pompous, annoying ass, should not be counting on Miranda’s dowry to pay off his extensive debts. Lord Hamill, whose limp was likely due to falling off his horse drunk, would need to find another brood mare. Seating him on the other side of Miranda was a brilliant maneuver. The old codger was so hard of hearing that if Miranda spoke to him, he had to lean closer to her, giving the appearance that he was inspecting her bosom. Which he likely was.

Lady Helen was entirely lacking in decorum. She even ogled Lord Welles during dinner. Not that Welles didn’t enjoy being ogled, but that was hardly the point.

The ultimate heroine to OW smackdown

Lady Helen…
I do hope you’ll forgive me, but I quite admire you. Lady Helen’s face took on a look of innocence. Miranda turned, knowing what would come next.
***********
“You understand, with it being my first season and my father’s title fairly recent, that we cannot have an ounce of scandal attached to us.”
“Of course.” Miranda replied. “One wonders then, why you would entertain the suit of the Cursed Earl.”
Lady Helen’s perfect brow wrinkled as if she were wrestling with some inner dilemma.
“Well it’s quite different for a gentleman, obviously. Scandal only makes some men, like Lord Kilmaire, that much more attractive. Women, however, become unsuitable. I’ve often thought it unfair. You’re so terribly brave to withstand such talk and still go about in society.”
What a little bitch Lady Helen was.
“What makes you so certain,”Miranda said softly, “That you are not considered unsuitable?”
Lady Helena’s perfect composure faltered. She reddened, rather unattractively. “You are..”
Miranda turned in her seat abruptly and leaned forward, her nose nearly touching Lady Helen’s. “I am the sister of the Marquess of Cambourne, your host. My lineage and that of my family would never be in dispute, nor would I need to marry to gain social standing.”
Lady Helen fell back as if slapped.
“I would consider what you say next, Lady Helen, very carefully. “My circumstances, of which you have very kindly offered your sympathy, will be nothing compared to the circumstances you will find yourself in should this conversation continue further. I would beg you to remember who my grandmother is and the damage she can inflict with only a few, well placed words. I fear neither you nor your family could withstand such an assault.”
Lady Jeanette Cambourne had not been much of a mother to Miranda, but she had imparted some useful lessons to her daughter. Namely, how to give a set down to a malicious little bitch.

Goodness this author needs an editor - 2.5 rounded up

I should have hated this book but I didn't. It has major editing issues, it has a dual timeline structure, the H is TSTL at times, and there was a "big misunderstanding". I hate all these things. Yet somehow I still liked the characters and managed to enjoy to story. The h is another strong female character. The H is lucky to get her. Definite improvement over book 2. (I still dislike Nick and Jemma)

This story was such a lovely surprise. After feeling a little let down by the previous book in The Wickeds series, I was hoping this one would be at least entertaining. It was so much more.

If I could, I’d probably read My Wicked Earl in one go as it was so fun and emotional, very romantic, with just enough painful angst to make me not want to put it down.

I loved Miranda and Colin’s chemistry; the tension sparked every time they shared any scenes, even when they didn’t actually talked or interacted in any away. There was so much going on with just them staring at each other – the pining was off the charts. What added an extra layer to this, was how conflicted they were about still loving each other, despite feeling hurt and betrayed.

I don’t usually enjoy second chance romances that much, but there was something very special about how Kathleen Ayer’s conveyed all the deep emotions both the protagonists experienced and shared. The non-linear narrative was great, especially by using scenes from Colin and Miranda’s shared past - when they were younger and she had crush on him, or later on when he was pretending to be inconvenienced and even annoyed by spending time with her, while in truth he enjoyed it as much as she did. When they were simply first falling in love.

All of that worked so well, because not only the plot was fairly simple – Colin, as newly minted Earl needed a wealthy heiress to help rebuild his estate – but most of the events happened in one location, so the story’s focus never strayed from exploring Miranda and Colin’s past and present relationship.

The book also had a strong supporting cast of characters; I enjoyed Sutton and Alex’s (from the first book in the series, Wickeds Scandal) presence, but it was the Dowager Cambourne that shined the most. I know the archetype of wise, old, incredibly wealthy, and even more influential Lady of the ton is tired by now, but if you want to read a well written example of such a character – the one that might be harsh, painfully honest, maybe scheming, but definitely deeply caring – Donata is definitely that.

I realise at this point recommending romance books by comparing them to the Bridgertons (tv) series is a little annoying, but trust me – if you enjoyed Jonathan Bailey’s Anthony Bridgerton’s almost obsessive longing for Kathani Sharma, you will love Colin’s painful yearning for Miranda. Oh, there was so many longing stares, grinding of teeth, and clenching of jaw – from both protagonists.

A fun and swoony book with beautiful pining!

Collin and Miranda's story was very entertaining. There were twists and turns, and I kept wanting answers throughout the entire novel. I knew something was wrong with the letter Collin supposedly received from Miranda. I just wish he would've mentioned it sooner. The whole thing kept me in suspense! I enjoyed the flashbacks and how their love story spanned years. My only negative were some of the editing mistakes. Overall, I really enjoyed Kathleen's play on this historical romance!

My review disappeared but this was a good book. They were apart for six years due to him thinking she married another and he didn't bother to ever ask her. It was a scheme from the evil mother. So he thinks she broke up and she thinks he abandoned her. So annoying. They definitely lusted after each other. I am not sure he was celibate because it never says one way or another but I an thinking he was because he kept thinking of her all the time and his loneliness and endless work back at his impoverished estate so i am looking with rosy glasses. It was pretty annoying at times and I gave it a three but then a four and then a three and I really did like the story.

The other books I've read from this author were way much better...
This one, I had to force myself to finish, I didn't like the formula!

Plot implies it is a hate to love story with Colin, earl of Killmaire, who has been abandonned by Miranda because she wanted to marry a duke.
There was hate alright, but only from Colin! He was so dumb, never fully stating what his problem was to Miranda. Everytime he would mention the duke she would be confused and he wouldn't simply ask her ''Why did you ditch me for him''? There, easy and simple!
They were kept apart due to an evil from her mother that led to a misunderstanding that should have been easily cleared, if not for Colin's stupid self...

Now what I didn't with the book was the back and forth between the past and present. We get it, Miranda and Colin have some histoy, we understood what took place 6 years ago. I hated that the author kept inserting bits of ''1830'' here and there. Even the first intimate moment between them was a flashback moment -_- In present times, they were still apart and we had to wait till the end to see them sharing some affection.

And there was too much of the side characters. I almost gave up when Chapter 1, which was a prologue since taking place in 180, was so focused on Nick... Then the rest of the story had a lot of scenes with the dowager, or the women Colin planned to marry, or Sutton and Alex. Not that much of Colin and Miranda. Maybe in the next book, we will have more of Colin and Miranda since this is someone's else story and the author seems to like to highlight the side characters' romance better -_-

Enjoyable yet frustrating

I found this romance to be both enjoyable and frustrating. Interference from Miranda's evil Mother has kept Colin and Miranda apart for six years. The fact that it went on for as long as it did and that Colin never thought to question a letter sent to him supposedly by Miranda and that neither of them sought the other out to find out the truth was rather frustrating. They were avoiding actually talking about it and even when Miranda demanded to know what she had done, Colin refused to tell her instead of wondering why she would ask when she should have known about the letter if she had written it. The fact that she had asked him that, should have been a big enough reason for him to question the validity of the letter. When all was revealed, it was a huge relief. I thought the first book was amazing and the second was very good but this one was my least favorite of the three. Six years of separation for something that a talk could easily have solved. It just was very sad to me as they made an awesome couple. I truly liked both Colin and Miranda and that is the reason for the three star rating. I didn't totally dislike the book but how long it took for Colin to realize the truth just felt so drawn out that it annoyed and frustrated me more then anything. If he had trusted in Miranda's love for him, as she had given him no reason to doubt her and would have questioned the validity of the letter, so much unhappiness may have been avoided.

3.5 stars rounded up

I liked Colin and Miranda's story even though it is one of those based around a "big misunderstanding" that if they would just talk to each other plain.y would have been resolved eons ago. Another instance of some fabulous and heartbreaking moments alongside some frustrations where I wanted to throw the book. You can see the plot/writing getting tighter (only 4 POVs in this one opposed to 7 in previous), though is in need of a good proofreader as there are quite a few typos and grammatical errors still. Stars were rounded up because of Miranda. I loved that she was the opposite of a "willowy" insipid twit. She was a bit rounded, spoke her mind ( in an adorable oundabout chatter-y way sometimes), smart, and she didnt just forgive and forget immediately when the misunderstanding was brought to light. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Colin & Miranda. He is one of her brother's (Sutton) best friends. They grew up together. Her mother would tell her she's fat and prevent her from eating. She fell in love with him when he brought her some raisin cakes (her favorite) and for years after she would follow him about calling him her prince and asking him to marry her. Fast forward. His uncle that he's loved passes away leaving his estate in debt (he mortgaged the property to send Colin to Eton). Colin is in London looking for a heiress even though he's only a 3rd son. He runs into Miranda and sees that she's all grown up. The renew their acquaintance and fell in love with each other. There's some making out but nothing more (he wanted to do things the right way). Then she sneaks into his bed and he can't resist her anymore. The next morning, he wakes up to a letter telling him his brother is sick and he needs to return home. He leaves a note for Miranda with his grandmother's ring as a "betrothal" ring and one for her dad stating his intentions. Miranda's mom intercepts the notes and any notes sent or received afterwards (she didn't want Miranda to marry Colin). While home, his brother dies and at a dinner his mother goes crazy and attacks Colin telling him that it should have been him instead. He is left with a nasty gash on his face and while getting sewn up receives a letter from Miranda telling him he was just a flirtation and that she was going to marry someone more suitable and returned his ring. He was devastated! Fast forward 6 years. His mother, father and now both older brothers have died and he is the new Earl. The estate is crumbling and he needs an heiress so back to London where he finds that Miranda is not only not a duchess but hasn't wed at all. She has few suitors (because she killed her mother's cousin...oh the scandal). She is mad at him for taking her virtue and leaving her and he believes she never wanted him. Another example of how things could've been solved 6 years prior had these people talked to each other. Her grandmother throws a house party with both of their potential matches but knows Colin and Miranda belong together. While they each try to make things work with their other suitors, they can't get past their feelings for each other.

4 Stars (Grace Callaway, Jennifer Ashley, Sarah MacLean, Jess Michaels, Lorraine Heath)

This book was good, worth reading in a few days. It hit pretty much most of my personal markers for a good read and well roundness of the book. my personal markers for a great read...1. smart and engaging writing, 2. Humorous, 3. sexy interactions and 4. stories with family/friends.

The development and interest in main characters, H/H well paired, and Secondary characters was enjoyable. It kept me wanting to know and read more. H/H were enjoyable and well paired.

Laugh out loud with humorous moments. The give and take dialogue was wonderful as well as action filled.

I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me). Badass women rock.

Movement of the book flowed for the most part. Book writing/conversation engaging. Not a lot of historical accuracy (no big deal to me), not a lot of internal character dialogue and not a lot of descriptive scenery written out.

Romantic /sexual content (kissing, oral and love making scenes) was throughout the book. Nothing over the top and was intertwined rightly in the story telling. 2/5 rating hotness and steam.

I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series).

would absolutely recommend the book and the series. you don’t have to read the series in order however you’ll miss the true telling of the story around the series.

My Wicked Earl is the third in The Wickeds series by Kathleen Ayers. I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. It took a couple of chapters to get into, but after that, the only thing that kept me from reading it was work. In short, I highly recommend this book.

My Wicked Earl was a delightful book. I loved Marissa as a heroine she was fascinating with her interest with Egypt and mummies. While a couple of times I shook my head because of him I also thought that he matched Marissa very well. I loved reading about how Colin and Marissa's past and present. My only small complaint is that at first, I couldn't keep some of the characters straight. Most of it is my fault though because this book is the third in the series and I didn't read the first or second. I would have to stop and remember who was who and how their relationship with the main characters. Overall, this book was a highly enjoyable historical romance.

I am so happy that I had the opportunity to read My Wicked Earl. This was what I was hoping for in a historical romance. As I mentioned, this is the third in the series. All of these books in the series so far are available on Amazon kindle unlimited. I will start this series from the beginning and then read the next in the series. I was impressed with this book and would reread it.

The story: 6 years ago, Colin fell in love with his best friend's sister, Miranda. He planned to marry her until he received a letter from her returning his ring and saying she was going to pursue marriage to a future duke. After being ruined by Colin and then ghosted, Miranda tried mending her broken heart but a scandal destroyed any decent marriage possibilities. Oh, and at the same time all this happened, Colin's whole family died and his mother attacked him with a knife. Now it's six years later and he's the Earl in desperate need of a wealthy wife.

This story had a lot of promise but in the end it didn't hold my attention. It literally took me 4 months to read because I kept putting it down for something else and I ended up skimming a lot of it. This story relies heavily on one of my least favorite tropes: no communication. Miranda obviously didn't write the letter that Colin received and he should have had more faith in her and sought her out. But in his defense, he was recovering from a horrific injury and she could have enlisted her brother or their other best friend to reach out to him. Just overall, there was a lot of communication gaps that just piled up and kept going into more, smaller but compounding miscommunication. And then it wrapped up a little too quickly.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. As always, I avoid summarizing the plot and try to avoid spoilers.

I love this genre, so I was excited when a copy of My Wicked Earl came my way. I greatly enjoyed most of the book, especially the near misses between the hero and heroine. The reader knows Miranda and Colin will end up together, but getting there is a lot of fun. Ayers wrote these characters well, and the minor characters were perfect foils for our protagonists. In general, the book kept me interested and I wanted to know what would happen next.

So, why four stars instead of five? The flashbacks! I would have preferred to have a main flashback at the beginning of the book instead of mini ones interrupting the flow. During the bulk of the story, I was more interested in the future than the past.

Love in a ist letter

Miranda has loved Colin all of her life! She can't imagine what has brought his disregard and disdain for her! Colin is an idiot he knows a little about Miranda past and reputation but he doesn't know the half! Even with Miranda painful confession about her reputation Colin is still very stubborn in his refusal to confess his love! When he finally gets an emphany he has left it almost too late! Everyone knows what an evil shrew Miranda mother is and why Colin didn't see her betrayal coming a mile wide .. Read to find out their tumultuous road to their HEA!

I got this book free for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book and finished it the same day. The characters are well written and likeable, the plot a good one and it flowed so well I didn't realise how long I'd been sat reading.

Lady Miranda Reynolds is practically a spinster but as she'd like a family she decides it's time for her to marry. The Earl of Kilmaire, Colin Hartley, needs a wife and asks his friends grandmother for help. Both Miranda and Colin already know each other from when she was a little girl and during her first season they got very close until circumstances intervened and they've been estranged for the past 6 years.

Too long

This is the fourth book in the series that I've read (I read #6 out of order) and it is my least favorite so far. This is the firs time that a lack of communication or miscommunication took so long to be resolved. Something happened in the past but didn't get cleared up until two thirds of the way through. Meanwhile, we got lots of who will Miranda and Colin marry until I wanted to skip ahead. And I NEVER want to skip ahead reading this author.

I also found the back and forth in time a bit jarring. Could be my fault for not noticing the dates when this occurred but it wasn't obvious at first.

My Wicked Earl was a delightful book. It is the 3rd book of The Wickeds series. I would suggest that the books a read in order, because a lot of things that happen in previous books are mentions in this one!!

Lady Miranda Reynolds is the heroine in this book. She was fascinating with her interest with Egypt and mummies. Colin and Miranda's past plays alot into the present story. You will find it hard to stop reading - yes it is that good of a story!!!

This book is an amazingly enjoyable historical romance. So ready for book 4 now!!!

I can't remember the exact date I finished. I'm sure I've read this book. I read the two prior to it knowing the entire time certain things about certain characters. I cannot find this book in my purchase history at all. Nor in my documents to indicate I ever received it as an ARC in the past. I suspect I might have purchased a paper copy of it at a grocery store at some point. Seeing as I cannot find any electronic evidence of it. So I will say that I liked it enough to buy it twice. And read it twice. Now I need to read the fourth book.

Another excellent novel in this series.

So enjoying this series …. I have read later novels (in other series) by this author and feel I should have read this series first, The Beautiful Barrington’s is a later series with a number of peripheral characters in this series as leads or more major secondary characters in it … it is a whole world that Kathleen Ayers has created.
The books in this series intersect well with each other and with the later series.
I prefer a shorter novel but that having been said I did truly love this book.

Miranda thinks Colin abandoned her. Colin thinks Miranda refused him. A lot has changed over the seven years these erroneous beliefs have kept them apart, while some things remain the same.

Love this pair. And I especially love the Dowager Machioness of Cambourne and her meddling schemes. I imagine that she's cut from the same cloth as Lady Danbury (of Bridgerton fame) and I devoured every moment she was on the page.

Needs a thorough proofread to catch some minor typos/errors.

Romance

The required format for a recency romance. Only confusion was the beginning which started before books one and two without indicating it. The only slight indication was the dates for the chapters. Enjoyable story. Most books have more sex than needed for the story and unfortunately sex sells so author's continue to embellish and lengthen the scenes.

I wasn't sure I was very interested in Colin, but I did like this book. Yes, the whole thing comes from a misunderstanding that should have been cleared up quickly and easily, but the story was still fun. Everything was fairly predictable but that doesn't make the journey any less enjoyable.

I still like this series enough to read the next book.

It just keeps getting better

Every single book so far in this series has been amazing and this one was no different. It is deliciously erotic. I was hooked from the very beginning and couldn't put the book down. Each book can be read as a standalone but are so much more when read one after the other.
