A marginally useful book on coin collecting. Covers a good variety of subjects, but lacks so much detail that the depth of knowledge gained is minimal.
Somehow manages to be both vague and verbose.
Feels like ChatGPT wrote half of it; the parts that seem human-made are much preferred.
Prepare to read the banal, probably AI-spewed "Embark on a voyage of..." and its variations countless times.
Generally lacking expert tips; the book often gives basic, common sense information, then tells the reader to figure out the rest by experience (conferences, forums, talk to expert graders, etc.). Which, in some fields, makes sense, but the whole purpose of buying a book on coin collecting...is to be taught by the book on coin collecting.

I’ve been gifted shiny minted coins in the past, but until now haven’t bothered to learn much about the coin hobby and trade. The government-issued coins my family received are sitting in a box on a shelf.
But Max Sterling, a specialist in the numismatic world, brings coin collecting to life in his up-to-date book The Coin Blueprint for Picky Collectors. I was amused early on by his formal-sounding writing: “Alas, fret not, for we shall equip ourselves with an array of invaluable resources that shall aid us in unraveling the enigmatic secrets concealed within these alluring numismatic treasures.” That set the tone!
Sterling’s writing is a tad on the dry side, but his passion and knowledge of coins and coin collecting is remarkable. In this well-researched book, he talks about aspects of coinage that range from the history of coin collecting and goals people can set to coin preservation, trading opportunities, deceptive counterfeit coins, and so much more. Folks who love coin collecting or who want to discover more about the hobby would probably give this read a five-star rating.

Wonderful, comprehensive guide
Coming across this book was great as I have some history with coin collecting. In my younger years, I inherited a collection of coins from my mother, and from then on I started my own little collection of coins. It wasn't much but it was a fun little hobby for me.
This book is a great, comprehensive resource for coin collectors. It covers different topics including information on obsolete coins, rare coins, and identifying coins that are of high value. The author also offers helpful information on how to preserve coins and how to identify counterfeit ones. The book covers mostly US coins, but a few other international coins are also discussed. Pictures are included in black and white, but there are QR codes where you can scan them to see the coins in color.
With the comprehensive information in this book, one minor issue I found was that there were a few parts where some information was a little repetitive. Besides that, overall, this was a wonderful, comprehensive guide; I recommend it.

This book provides a good history of coin collecting. By the end of the book the reader will have a fair understanding of the history of coins and collecting them. Several different categories of coins are discussed in the book. This gives the reader a taste of different types of coins that might want to collect. Reasons for starting a coin collection are also explored. Resources and tools for collecting are also laid out in a fashion that will help readers interested in collecting get started. There is also more advanced information for those already collecting coins but need pro tips. The writing in this book is clean and clear. The organization of the book is good. In general, it read like the kind of book you might want to read if you are looking to start a new hobby and coin collecting is one you’re considering or if you’ve started coin collecting and feel a bit lost. Overall, think this would make a good first read for anyone considering a coin collection hobby.

For many moons I have wondered about coin collecting. Well, more that I have occasionally looked at a pile of old Buffalo head nickels, quarters, foreign and other coins in my possession, and wondered if they were worth anything. Aside from occasional internet surfing, I never really did anything to scratch this itch. This book provides an excellent resource to begin to do so. It covers a wide array of topics in the field of serious coin collecting, including such topics as how to spot counterfeit coins and how to clean and preserve your collection. An elemental discovery was this is called Numismatics. Not sure if and how much I will really delve into this field with my “collections”, but I have at least opened a door to the possibility of doing so. I will at least check to see if I have some rare and valuable beauty of a coin in my possession! Thanks for the great introduction to the topic.

First of all, I have to highlight how enjoyable this read was. The tone of the author is like a friend telling you about their hobby in a casual, non-judgmental way, which made it enjoyable because too many hobbyists take themselves way too seriously. With that said, the book is divided into 12 chapters, starting from all about coins and their history to their secrets, trading, and much more. As a history buff, I really enjoyed learning about the first coins being minted, how, and why. There are other cool facts sprinkled around the book as well. While as a kid I was interested in collecting coins, which is why I picked this book up, I don't feel like I have the time and strength to do it now. Hence, the later chapters about more technical aspects of coin collecting, like preserving and care, were interesting. However, I understand that this is a book for coin collectors, so no deduction of stars for that, as I do think it is expertly written.

It goes into everything like, what historical periods to look for, what geography should be looked for, things like trade coins and minting errors and the like. It also goes into specific coins like peace dollars, buffalo nickels, Washington quarters, etc.
Coin grading is also a topic discussed within, and personally, I found that the most fascinating. As a minor collector myself, I usually focused on things like how old it was or how it looked, but I learned that there were different values to different coins and even ways that they can be messed up, like by sulfur and corrosion (didn’t know sulfur had any effect on coins, but now I do!). Anyway, this book is great for any coin collector and earns a definite recommend from me!

I have borrowed this book thanks to my Kindle Unlimited subscription and read it on the Kindle app of my tablet. Coin Collecting Blueprint: From Beginner to Expert | Master the Art of Coin Collection with Proven Strategies and Start Collecting Like a Pro | Identify and Maximize the Potential of Your Treasures is a great starting point for someone looking to get into coin collection.
Understanding the numismatics of a coin along with the multitude of factors that contribute to its value, such as historical background, materials used in minting it, exclusivity, preservation and more are delved into in a good amount of detail. I personally enjoyed most learning about how to tell apart a counterfeit and the techniques employed in differentiating a real coin from a counterfeit. I also appreciated the QR codes taking you the original pictures of the coins, but most of all the bonus checklist at the end!
I recommend this book to anyone starting from zero in terms of coin collection.

I personally enjoyed most learning about how to tell apart a counterfeit and the techniques employed in differentiating a real coin from a counterfeit. I also appreciated the QR codes taking you the original pictures of the coins, but most of all the bonus checklist at the end!

This is the first book I have read from this author and I must say it was quite a indulging, informative read on how to start a coin collection, especially since I'm a new beginner and have been wanting to start a coin collection for a long time but didn't know where to start. This amazing book will show you the hobby of numismatics and will explain you easily what it means and tips to get started, making it a perfect read for beginners. It also provides very well researched insights on the coins themselves such as how to clean and care for them and as well as spotting counterfeit.
As an added bonus, this book also provides the reader with a checklist for coins, a glossary for numismatics and a collection template.
This was such a informative, knowledgeable read for me and I would like to read more guides and other books from this author.

This book is a great intro into the hobby of coin collecting by Max Sterling. The book is broken into several categories including the history of coins and coin collecting, building your own collection, and how to preserve your coins.
Reading this book I was able to learn a lot of the history on coins and currency from a variety of countries. I liked that it had pictures of coins and included QR codes that direct you to even more information. This guide was comprehensive, even covering how to spot fake coins and the valuation process. It is clear the author knows his stuff and has a passion for coins and collecting, as included in the book are the author's own personal stories which add a lot to the guide.
I would def. recommend this book to someone wanting to get into collecting, or even people that are interested in learning more about history and world currencies.

Wealth of Information
I’ve been interested in coin collecting since I was younger and my mother started collecting silver coins in anticipation of the phasing out of silver. She was certain they’d be worth something in the future and I do believe they have increased in value.
This book starts with the history of coin collecting. I had no idea it went so far back in time. It tells of values and series. It encourages setting goals based on these ideas. There is a list for beginners that I found useful.
The next chapter delves into ancient coins. This is quite interesting. The third chapter is about grading. Chapter 4 is about strategy in coin collecting.
This book could use a good edit. The second sentence contains a grammatical error that could’ve been corrected. Even in a title it says garding for grading. A spellcheck could find a mistake like that.

The author is an expert in numismatics (he’s passionate about exploring and collecting coins and knows what he is talking about). He provides the latest market trend information and advice for collectors who are just starting out through to those at an advanced level. It is interesting to read about the origin, history and types of coin production and their use in various civilisations. Some collectors choose a theme and find out the story behind a particular historical period to increase their knowledge and to discuss with interested others. He advises collectors to set a budget so that they can pursue their passion for coin collecting without the cost getting out of hand. A well-rounded collection, he says, consists of coins from diverse eras, nations and topics. There is advice about how to handle, store, clean and preserve your collection and how to spot counterfeit coins and scams. There was a lot of repetition and the same thing said different ways, but overall this would be a useful tool for collectors at all stages.

The author has provided a clear, common-term written work that allows novices to enter into the confusing and in many ways expense world of coin collecting. This is a work that can be taken chapter by chapter, and shared with your family to begin or to improve on a heritage building hobby. While it does provide detailed guidance, it still manages to be entertaining and educational so that older children and teens can maintain their interest and focus on the principles laid out in such a delightfully created book. Highly recommend for future coin collecting wizards, and weekend hobbyists. Nicely done author.

I recently inherited a coin collection full of coins from the early 20th century with a few that were even older. I discovered this book on Amazon and purchased it so I could learn more about what I have. This book is extremely informative about coins, coin collecting, and the history of coinage. After finishing this book I want to expand my existing collection with some of the world collector's coins like Islamic empire gold dinars along with the pure silver coins from the Yuan dynasty.
