Second Chance Ex

Rate this book

Joey Tanner once said nothing hurts worse than when love goes wrong.

And he was so right. I just wish I'd taken his word for it back then... it would've saved us both a world of pain.

Prue Watson knows heartache. For two years she's tried to leave the past where it belongs and move on from the scars caused by first love gone wrong. But with the surprise news of her best friend's wedding, Prue's past is back in the form of the six-foot-five NFL defensive lineman who broke her heart. Joey Tanner has made more than a few stupid decisions in his life. Breaking Prue's heart is at the top of that list. Now is his chance to win back the love of his life, and if there's one thing Joey's good at, it's winning. Forced together as Best Man and Maid of Honor for their best friends' wedding, long buried memories stir and sparks fly. But some scars are often too deep to heal, and sometimes the past has a habit of getting in the way of the future. They say you never get over your first love... but what if first love got a second chance?

*This book contains potentially triggering content including the mention of miscarriage, infertility, and cheating. I sincerely hope that I have written these topics with the care and the sensitivity that they deserve.*

I love second chance romances and randomly decided to read this, but I would've loved to know there was cheating going into it. A lot of arc reviewers are calling the MMC Joey a book boyfriend, but no one mentions that he cheated on her. Even outside of that, Joey came off as selfish often in both past and present chapters. I did fly through this because I wanted to know what happened, so if you are okay with cheating (and other trigger warnings below - there are a lot), then it isn't a bad read.

‘I said forever, and I meant it.’

This book has it all. There’s hilarious moments. There’s heartbreaking moments. There’s spicy moments. There’s devastatingly sweet moments. Ugh it’s just so good!
Prue is the absolute best. I feel like she’s weirdly a mixture of me and my best friend’s personality. I loved her.
Joey is A+ book boyfriend material. I just… he is it.
This was a perfect dual timeline to me. I’m actually a fan of dual timelines to begin with but this one knocked it out of the park. You get to see them when they first fall in love but it’s the highlights. You don’t get every single minute detail but you get the major moments that truly solidified their relationship and where it is today. I liked that a lot!

Also, this is one of my favorite second chance romances. I’m hesitant about second chance romances sometimes because it’s almost always dumb miscommunication. This one though 🥹 it makes sense. It makes sense that they grew apart and that they still have unresolved feelings. I personally loved it.

I wasn’t fully expecting this to be as heavy as it was so if you have any trigger warnings at all I would def advise you to look at them just in case. Be aware that some may be spoilers though.
I really loved this book. It was full of so many different emotions. It was paced great. I also kind of love that the HEA is happy but not fairytale happy.
Highly recommend!!

Thank you to Sunny Babe PR for the opportunity to read this arc!

While I do love a good second chance romance, I do not like the cheating/other woman trope. Especially in the situation in which it happened in this book, where the FMC was in such a bad space mentally, and the MMC said that she was not there for him so he looked elsewhere.

This was a skim and skip read… because time flip
Flops every other chapter. 16 yo sweethearts that are together 8 years and then separated for two years. There’s really no gut punch because you don’t find out until the last few chapters that they had a miscarriage and when the h was depressed the football player H kissed a cheerleader in Vegas. No sexual cheating and bothe were celibate for the 2 year separation. There’s a lot about the mc’s bff’s who are getting married which is a strong focus in this book. I found it boring and way too long although the mc’s had potential.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Second chance romances are my sweet spot, but they have to be good, sometimes they’re just too cheesy or too not at all realistic. This book was just the right amount. I loved Joey, I also love when the MMC realize what their mistakes were and regret it!

So thankful I got this ARC from sunny babe pr! I couldn’t put this book down, the small town romance, then vs now, fighting true feelings had me the whole way! It was super spicy & hot allllll the way, on fire chemistry between prue & Joey! Also sadness and heartbreak, which was palpable. I loved how I could feel the emotions come through in the entire book, loved it. Isn’t there always someone we maybe wonder if we want a second chance with???

Forced Proximity, Fake Dating, and Second Chances… What could be better?! 😍

I adored this book! This is a beautiful, easy read and the writing style is so casual & fun. I love a story where I can be laughing out loud in one chapter and ugly sobbing in the next, and this book was the perfect combination!!

Prue & Joey were so easy to fall in love with and I was truly rooting for their happily ever after 💕 I love the sassy and unapologetic FMC, the possessive golden retriever MMC, and the open door spice 😍

In this story, Prue Watson is an elementary school teacher, and Joey Tanner is an NFL player. They broke up two years ago, but now they have to meet again because their best friends are getting married. Prue is the bridesmaid, and Joey is the best man, which means they’ll have to spend time together for the first time since they split. Could this reunion lead to a second chance at love, or will their past keep them from getting back together?

Prue Watson is a remarkable woman, full of beauty, joy, and strength. She's a loyal friend and a devoted daughter, always bringing warmth to people around her.Yet, behind her radiant smile, she's carried a hidden pain for years. Despite her efforts to deny it, her love for Joey has never faded, remaining a constant through it all.

Joey Tanner is a big and strong guy, but he has a gentle side when it comes to Prue Watson, the woman he loves. He cares about her deeply, giving her all his love and more. Joey had some secrets in the past, but he eventually shares them, bringing relief and clarity to their relationship. He has never doubted his love for Prue, and he never will.

The story is structured in a "then and now" narrative, providing insights into the characters' past lives and shedding light on their present-day relationships. The supporting characters are also well-crafted, adding depth and a vibrant presence to the story.

This story will take you on an emotional journey, stirring feelings of sadness, joy, grief, humor, and love. The author skillfully balances the spice and plot creating a compelling narrative. By the end, you'll understand that true love finds its way home, no matter how many obstacles it encounters.

I am so grateful to Sunny Babe PR for allowing me the chance to read this ARC!

Exes Prue and Joey are thrown together again due to their bestfriends getting married. We get to see adult Joey and Prue navigating their breakup while trying to support their bestfriends and be there for them while also flashing back to the early stages of their relationship and seeing how everything went down between them, what caused their breakup, etc. Prue and Joey went through SO much together, my heart was literally aching for them while reading their story. I mean it when I say this book had me crying. I was actually sobbing and had the tissues on hand while reading this one. I adore both of these characters so much. Even though so much happened between them, so much nasty shit, I still found myself in love with them both and rooting for them the entire time. I even found the side characters pretty enjoyable and likable! The author did such an amazing job at pulling you into the story, making you feel like you're there and you're a part of it. I also love how realistic and relatable these characters were! Every single one of them, even down to Adam fucking Hopper. They all just seemed so genuine and real and they all reminded me of people I have met/encountered in my life which I loved that. It just added to all the emotions and feelings I had while reading this book. I have never read a contemporary romance THIS fast! (Okay, that’s a lie. I read one other romance book this quickly.) Either way, to me, that speaks alot about how good the book is! It was so good, I couldn’t stop reading. I was staying up late, reading in the car, reading in the bathroom, reading as soon as I wake up, etc. I couldn't get enough! And bonus points because all the mentions of Taylor Swift!

The writing in this book was so well done and my eyes slid over the words so fast that I slipped into the film in my mind, forgetting I was reading for most of the book. Shann McPherson has mastered tongue-in-cheek humor. I’m not sure if there’s a book award for that, but if there isn’t, we need to make one because first place belongs to her. In fact, I think she would win in quite a few categories.

The relationship drama is everything I never knew I wanted and then some. Let me preface by saying that I have a very low tolerance for petty high school relationship drama. So when the backstory starts with a high school party and the reader girl falling for the captain of the football team, I was nervous. It turned out to be for no reason. The backstory drama when they are in high school is legitimate adult serious and not overblown petty teen angst. That was important to earn credibility because the reason for the big breakup is unknown for a good portion of the book. If I had watched these two pine over each other because of a ridiculous miscommunication break up, I would’ve been extremely disappointed. I was not. There was nothing petty or overblown about their relationship troubles.

The com part of this romcom reads like a sitcom. I thought it just needed a laugh track, but by Chapter 25, I had made my own, no longer trying to keep my laughter quiet as I ignored the stares of my family to enjoy episode 25 of Prue and Joey who ‘were on a break.’ Why do I feel like I just binged 10 seasons of Friends but a much sexier version?

The steamy scenes have been permanently added to my highlight memory reel. Every one of the sex scenes had the perfect recipe of sweet, spicy, hot, natural, soft, hard, gentle, and dirty!

The descriptions are not too wordy but enough to paint every picture in hilarious detail. The pace was perfect, always something interesting you want to find out but not so much going on that it feels forced. During chapter 27, I had to pause my reading to add the author’s entire backlist to my TBR.

It takes a very delicate balance to create an MMC who is tough and manly but romantic and sweet. Joey Tanner is the epitome of the perfect balance. After chapter 38, he has my whole heart.

This is the 120th book I’ve read so far this year and, by far, my favorite !

I feel emotionally wrecked from wrecked from reading Second Chance Ex. So the first note here is that the trigger warnings in this book are important. I don't typically have an issue with triggers, but did have a moment where I had to put this book down and take a breath. Its intense and overwhelming in a way that brings strong emotions from a book, which I have a deep appreciation for.

Second Chance Romances are notorious for being emotionally charged, so I loved how McPherson used the trope as her title to drive her point home. I need a book like this to make me grab my chest and heave as I'm reading and McPherson delivered. Twice. It's been a long time since a book had me heaving as I was reading but she got me good. I don't know if I'll survive this AND Taylor Swift's new album hitting me in the same week.

Prue and Joey's meet cute was top notch. I loved it. I loved the full circle moment, I loved the then and now aspect of the book, and I loved their fated mates vibe. I didn't love Madison (ever) and called her drama almost immediately. I just could do without her. I did love the dedication Joey had towards Prue and how that showed in different ways throughout their 10 years together. I wanted a bang-ier ending but totally get that this was the story delivered and I loved it.

I love a book that makes me feel so much, and Second Chance Ex had me feeling from the beginning. I found it well written with a captivating plot and loveable characters (except you, Madison.) This book packed some quality content in its almost 400 pages and I savored each and every word.

Thank you so much to Shann and Sunny Babe PR for the ARC!!

Second Chance Ex ARC Review

i was very fortunate to receive an ARC of Second Chance Ex by Shann McPherson from SunnyBabePR, thank you so much!! 🩷

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

content warning: mention of miscarriage and infertility, explicit on-page sexual scenes and references, explicit on-page language, mention of off-page sexual assault, mention of off-page attempted suicide of a parent, mention of off-page physical abuse caused by a parent”

“i was ruined for every other woman after the first time i ever made love to you. i knew even back then that there would never be anyone else. you were always it for me. you are it for me, prue.”

this was my first time reading anything by shann and i will definitely be binging her other work ASAP!! i absolutely loved this book so much! i couldn’t put it down.

once again, im usually not a huge fan of dual timelines and dual pov together but shann made it work perfectly. i don’t think there was ever a moment where i was ever confused, everything blended together and was seamless! and honestly, i don’t think this book would be what it is without jumping between both timelines and povs. it really created a complex story of love, loss, heartbreak and healing.

prue and joey are without a doubt it for each other. but there story tore my heart apart. the amount of emotions i went through reading this book…i cried, i gasped, i got mad, i laughed. literally every emotion. and the angst was definitely angsting! but it was all worth to see prue and joey get the hea they deserved!

this was definitely one of my favorite reads so far of 2024 and i can’t wait to read the authors previous and future work! once again thank you so much to sunnybabepr and shann mcpherson for providing me with this arc 🩷

Title: Second Chance Ex by Shann McPherson

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I wanted to catch up on some ARCs I was given, and I am so glad I started this one!
This read absolutely captivated me, tugging at my heartstrings in the best possible way. The author's storytelling made me feel like I was living alongside the characters in the book. 🫶🏻

The narrative centers around Prue Watson, a dedicated teacher, and Joey Tanner, an NFL defensive lineman, both of whom share a history as high school sweethearts. Despite their past heartbreak, their story didn’t end there. As maid of honor and best man of the soon-to-be bride and groom, they are forced to see each other once again. The rekindled connection between the two main characters deepens the story, making it more emotional and intricate.

Throughout the book, I found myself empathizing with them and celebrating their moments of joy. This rollercoaster of emotions kept me fully engaged from start to finish.

It's important to note that the book tackles sensitive topics like infertility, miscarriage, and off-page suicide, adding depth and authenticity to the characters' journeys.

In conclusion, this story was beautiful, and I'm glad that I read it. I am also grateful for the opportunity to share my thoughts through this review. 🥰

✨This captivating book will be available on Kindle Unlimited on May 15, 2024

Prue is a school teacher and Joey is a professional football player with the NFL. They were high school sweethearts and first loves, after a heart wrenching break up they go their separate ways and don’t see each other for a few years. When their best friends decide to get married & choose Prue & Joey to be maid of honor and best man they are forced back together during the build up to the wedding as they carry out their pre wedding duties.

There were so many moments in this book that made me laugh out loud.. Joeys inner monologue views of Adam 😂. I could just read these two going at each other. Prue and Maddy's best friends relationship they had their moments 🤭

I cried reading some chapters, some parts of this book cut deep and were extremely emotional as they touched on some very sad & sensitive topics but it made the story and helped you understand the characters better. so many times I just wanted to give the FMC Prue a big hug.

My confession, truths and secrets -Joey Tanner 😭

The spice and levels of steam were done right I wasn’t ready for those scenes 😱 .. too many to mention with out giving spoilers .. they were so good I may have read Chapters 28/29/40 numerous times (just to make sure nothing was missed for my review 😮‍💨🤭😅) Joey and his grey sweat pants woo 🫠🤭

✨Contemporary Sports romance
✨Dual pov
✨Past & Present timelines
✨High school sweethearts / First love
✨He falls first and hard
✨Second chance romance
✨Spice
✨Forced proximity
✨Lots of yearning & pining
✨Swoon-worthy moments
✨Sad themes pls do check TW
✨Emotional moments
✨Close Friendship group

Overall I really enjoyed this book .. the writing style , story plot and characters kept me hooked and I couldn’t stop reading. I would have loved to know more about Joeys relationship with his dad and what actually happened on a particular night mentioned in the book.
It was my first book by this author and I'll def be reading more of her books ❤.

Second Chance Ex by Shann McPherson🥀
Thank you to @sunnybabepr for this ARC, this is my honest review☺️
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌶️🌶️🌶️
My thoughts: Wow, this was a rollercoaster of emotions. If you want to feel your feelings, and maybe a good cry, this could be it. This book had a dirty talking ex that comes back and refuses that their love story is over. There was funny moments, some heartbreaking themes, and will make your chest feel huge, rooting for second chance love. Joey is everything you could possibly want in a man and Prue knows it and was constantly attempting at talking herself out of, not just her physical attraction, but her feelings for Joey that never went away. That author was so good at making me wait for answers to so many questions. The best friends, the forced proximity, sexual tension, jealousy and funny side character meddling, it was all written so good! I definitely recommend 😊

This book was so freaking good. I was obsessed with Joey and Prue’s story from line one. This book was so heartbreakingly good, I loved that we got to see Prue and Joey’s relationship now and from when they were younger. I am a sucker for second change romances so I loved watching Prue and Joey fall back in love with each other [I mean did they really every fall out of love??] Shann McPherson did such an amazing job of showing Prue and Joey’s love story, the writing was so amazing I felt like I was watching a movie in my head while I was reading. The writing, the heartbreak, the love, the friendship, the spice, the chemistry was all just so good. I am now in need of reading anything and everything Shann McPherson has written, shopping lists included.

Huge thank you to SunnyBabePR and Shann McPherson for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

5⭐️ and absolutely zero criticism.

I loved every single second of this book and I am honestly gutted that I have finished it. The duel timelines reminded me so much of Emily Henry’s Happy place to start off with but then it very quickly found its own identity.

Joey and Prue’s story was so sweet and I was captivated in the very first chapter. I’m not usually a massive lover of the second chance trope but this book gave me a whole new perspective.

Joey is the biggest sweetheart and quite literally every girls dream. His love for Prue is unmatched.

“I knew you wanted an out, and I was willing to give you one, even if it meant me being the villain, and even if it meant people might hate me” 😭

I have definitely found my new comfort read.

Thank you @Sunnybabepr for sending me a copy of this book!

Devoured this! Literally couldn’t put it down!

Two years ago Prue’s heart was broken by Joey Tanner. She’s been doing her best to work past it, through it. To get to the other side of it. But now, she’s forced to face it, or rather, face him. Maddy, her bff, has just told her that she’s engaged. To none other than Ryan, her long time boyfriend, and Joey Tanners best friend. And of course, the best man, to her maid of honor.

Second chance romance has never been a go-to trope for me, but after this story, I’m totally rethinking that decision. This. Was. Everything!! Ugh I loved these characters! Loved how real they were. That we got to see their strengths, their flaws, their mistakes. This was a roller coaster of emotion and I was here for all of it!!

Epic. That’s the only word I can find to describe Prue and Joey. Does a love like this really exist? God I hope so, and I hope I find it soon 🥰🥰. The journey these two went on …I loved it. Loved the back and forth from present to past. Loved seeing the growth of the characters, of their relationship. The chemistry !!!!!! Oh girl!!!! These two have it!

Easy five star read! Easy recommendation! I need to read another book by this author like stat!!

This book is beautiful.
I cried three times.

It follows high school ex loves, Joey Tanner and Prue Watson. Joey and Prue break up (no spoilers) and the plot followers their lives becoming entwined after both of their best friends are getting married.

I just wanted to dive into the pages and give them both a hug. honestly, they have been through some heartbreaking and testing times, and I just love them. This book is angsty, sexy, emotional (please check the TW’s), funny and just blooming brilliant.

Joey will be etched into my memories forever; he's caring, funny, kind, possessive, aggressive and has literally made me melt with his use of 'baby.' 🫠🥵

I found loving Prue from the minute I met her; she's sarcastic, truthful, kind, loving and just gorgeous. I would love to be friends with her.

This is a top read for me, and I know that you will feel the same way once you read it.

I absolutely devoured. Just the type of book I needed. The author must’ve had a sneak peak to Taylor Swifts new album because this has “I can do it with a broken heart” all over it.

Prue is maid of honor for her best friend and is over the moon but has to come face to face with the best man. The best man who just so happens to be her ex, but also the love of her life. Can she handle it?

Joey made it big time from his small hometown. He made it all the way to the NFL. But his heart has never left his hometown. He’s the best man for his best friend’s wedding and hopes to win back his high school sweetheart. But can they overcome their history?

I have never ugly cried while reading, pick up this book to root for the couple and feel your heart break.

Thank you Sunnybabe PR for sending me an advanced copy.

thank you valentine pr!!

3.5 rounded up

who knew i’d enjoy dual timeline second chance romance?

the premise of this book sounded so good i was so intrigued but not gonna lie, up until like 80% i was having such a blast i loved the wedding aspect and the angst and the tension

i liked that the flashbacks gave insight into the beginning of their relationship and the inevitable fall out but the fact that they kept alluding to this big thing and then just not touch up on it??? idk it just bothered me also the ending felt very rushed and lacking

MINOR SPOILER: the whole fake dating thing was hilarious

all in all, i really did enjoy this book i just wish the ending had gone a different way

😧

I don’t even know where to begin. This book was written with every Cliché known to humankind. And to make matters worse it was just a flatline story written as if a 15-year-old would write and not even a talented one. I’m sorry you need to evolve as a writer. You need to add more body to your writing, more storyline ,it was just so plain and simple. Some might like it and that’s okay but to those who are familiar with romance it’s just not enough. I’m sorry it was too basic.

Oh my gosh, you guys HAVE to read Second Chance Ex by @shannmcpherson_author!! This book has it ALL - hilarious moments that had me LOLing, heartbreaking moments that brought me to tears, steamy scenes that raised the temperature in the room, and sweet scenes that filled my heart with joy. I'm telling you, this book is SO GOOD!

I absolutely adored the FMC, Prue. She reminds me so much of myself when I was younger - strong yet vulnerable, and just trying to figure things out. And the MMC, Joey, is total boyfriend goals. He's handsome, caring, loyal - basically everything you could want in a leading man. Swooooon!

The dual timeline is perfection. You get to see how they fell for each other the first time around, mixed with key moments from their relationship years later. It's the perfect balance of past and present.

Best of all, this book brought out ALL the feels for me as a reader. I laughed, I cried, I felt all fluttery inside - Shann McPherson is truly a master at evoking emotion. You guys need to clear your schedules for this one - trust me, you won't want to put it down!

God I love the second chance trope…UGH so good!! I loved everything about this book! I laughed, I cried, I was angry, I felt every single emotion and I ate it up. These characters went through so much and could only heal when they were together. I wish there was more of them and I miss them already! I feel so connected and attached to them I don’t want to let go.
