Daniel Barnett lives in Portland, Oregon and is a lover of stories--especially ones where things go bump in the night. His work has appeared in Crowded Magazine, and his short story The Sadie Hawkins placed in the top 6 for the 2015 Aeon Award. When he isn't writing or reading, he's discussing fiction with others. Whether they want to or not.
Daniel Barnett does it again… the next chapter of the Nightmareland chronicles is a captivating and devastating read, one that gives fans everything they’ve been longing for and more and I for one can’t understand (well I can, because Barnett can write with the best of them) how he keeps bringing out banger after banger.
I’ll keep this brief as it’s the seventh volume on an ongoing series (I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone, because you need…NEED to discover this series).
What I will say is that I really loved the direction Barnett takes us in with this novel, it slips away from the usual fair, but there is a reason for that, and what we get is something very special indeed and a fresh injection of new characters which after the heartache of the last book Lilly, it was a must… but trust me, Barnett knows how to write characters we love and root for, characters we fall in love with, ones which live rent free in our minds and with Blind Spots he offers us more of that gold dust.
The way Barnett also splices in things from this ongoing tapestry of a story is great too, he doesn’t just info dump stuff on a recap basis, he trusts his readers and fans and those that have journeyed this darkened path to understand his references and it’s these little intricacies that really elevate the story and the storytelling for that matter to another level.
This book, hell, this series is one of the best series out there, I don’t even look at them as individual books as it’s just an ongoing narrative to me, broken up into delicious and captivating bitesized chunks - and that is the sign of a great story and a masterful storyteller.
This is a chronicle, a canon of work that will stand the test of time and it deserves, in my opinion to be held up there with other works of this nature, such as the epic books like The Stand and Dune and Ghoul N’ The Cape - epic stories told with utter beguiling control and a mastery of the craft!
Daniel Barnett, I salute you sir… now get writing the next one, I need to know what happens next!
Writing Lily's follow up couldn't have been an easy task for Daniel Barnett after delivering such a masterfully crafted gut-wrenching book, and yet, he's managed to create another absolute gem.
I embarked on the read of Blind Spots thinking I knew the world I was stepping into, I expected it to be as great as the previous six. What I didn't expect was to be surprised, and yet Barnett manages to keep us on our toes with every page. I read Blind Spots in two sittings.
As before, the worldbuilding is nightmare material, but what sets Daniel Barnett's work apart are his characters. The love he shows for them, that the reader can feel and share.
I could say so many things about the little treats those who have read the Nightmareland Chronicles will find within these pages and how those broke my heart all over again without the need of more than just one single sentence, but that would force me to venture into spoiler territory.
The Nightmareland Chronicles is my favorite horror series of all time, and Blind Spots only further confirms it.
