Love on the Line

Rate this book
Maren Rivers lives her life following three scientific principles: Cheez-Its can solve any problem, climate change is very real, and Jack Walters is bad, bad news.

Since she met the six-foot-five, tattoo-covered, NFL lineman nearly two years ago, Maren has done everything within her power to avoid the warm and fuzzy feeling that appears whenever Jack is near. But so far, Maren’s arsenal of withering looks and snide comments has done nothing against Jack’s goofy smile and optimistic attitude.

As the maid of honor in her best friend’s wedding, it’s Maren’s job to plan a joint bachelor-bachelorette getaway. The only request from the bride and groom? Jack helps her plan the trip. Maren’s answer to that request is simple. No way. Avoiding her teensy, tiny feelings for sunny Jack Walters was a Herculean feat before she knew he supports marine conservation. Now? It’s nearly impossible. Worse, if anyone can tear down the walls that Maren has painstakingly built around her heart, it’s Jack. As Maren spends time with Jack, it becomes increasingly difficult to deny how she feels, leaving her with a decision to make. Does she fortify her walls and keep Jack out, or does she gamble with her heart and put her love on the line?

I haven’t related so much to a main character than I did to Maren in a LONG time. Her struggle with self confidence, PCOS, and trying to get herself out of a head space where she thinks she too much is so relatable!! Maren’s feisty attitude and stand-offish behavior when it came to Jack had me eating the book up. Jack’s easy going, patient, lovable personality had me melting throughout this book and made me wish he was real! Nicole’s ability to create a world with such fun and well rounded characters is amazing. I loved being immersed in this world and being able to really relate to the main character so much really made this a special read for me. Thank you to Nicole for allowing me to read this as an ARC. Please, please, please get a copy to read yourself when it comes out April 23rd!!

This is book 2 of the Seattle Mavericks series. However, this is my first time reading a book from this author!

What can you expect from this book?
🪴 Close Proximity
🪴 Sunshine MMC x Semi-grumpy FMC
🪴 PCOS rep
🪴 “Will do anything for her”
🪴 No third-act breakup
🪴 Open door spice

I loved getting to know the characters from the first book and I loved reading Jack & Marens story! (Jack is a wonderful book boyfriend😫) He is a NFL player and Maren is a marine biologist. This story is told from a dual POV, which I appreciate since I wanna know allll the thoughts.

I feel like they are both pretty relatable characters too. Maren sometimes feels like she is too much, or too loud. But at the end of the day, it’s just her mind thinking that way and not how the important people in her life feels.

This book had me giggling so much! It has banter and the spice. I could picture so many scenes in my head like the time they were stargazing. The characters worked on their communication because it’s literally so important, even though it is hard sometimes.. I did not expect the ending!! But I loved it 🤍

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to receive an e-ARC of this book!

This is the second book in this series and I die of laughter at every single moment that these two characters had with each other. They dislike each other but secretly had feeling for each other and did not know if the other one felt the same thing. I how he was her king and she was his queen and they slowing fallen in love with each other and they got married after everything that went through. I love how she proposed to him and how she shocked him with getting marry at the end of the book.

This was a super cute story! I really liked both Maren and Jack and was cheering them on the whole way. The chemistry was great, and I loved their banter at the start of the book.

One thing I wish had been drawn out a bit more was Maren's relationship with Sawyer, specifically where Maren is confronting her insecurities with Sawyer. Navigating those conversations with friends can be so hard, and I think expanding this area could have brought the book from good to great.

Another minor thing was around introducing characters - some of the intros felt a bit forced. Like the author was telling me info about the characters rather than letting the characters show me. As we got deeper into the story, that went away. And I think as the author continues to develop as a writer, this area will continue to improve.

Overall, it's was a cute lil read and an author I would pick up again!

I thoroughly enjoyed Love on the Line and it’s definitely more than a football romance. The dynamic between the cast of characters is so good with the witty banter and group dynamics. Maren and Jack were the perfect couple and the way Jack is with Maren is so beautiful. I adored the representation of PCOS and the struggles Maren faces and more importantly the way Jack supports here is perfection. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would highly recommend it. I received a complementary copy from the author.

This was a beautiful story that had me crying, smiling, laughing and kicking my feet. Nicole did a wonderful job with this one and I know it won't be my last one I read by her. Jack and Maren are such a wonderful couple and I love how they complimented each other. Jack was safe, strong and supportive of Maren when she needed. He was there to reassure her of her worth and that she could stand up for herself when needed. Maren challenged him and whenever she was down he lifted her up.

I could not put this book down. I laughed out loud many times and teared up some too! I haven’t read an e-book in a while and honestly I was getting nervous when I seen 96% of the book had already been read; I was preparing myself for a cliff-hanger or a horrible ending but nope, Nicole delivered! I really hope there’s another Seattle Mavericks Series about Deon and Nathalie.

I absolutely loved this book. From the *chef’s kiss* banter between the main characters, to the dynamic of the larger friend group- the book had me smiling. You can really see yourself and your friends in the characters Cubba writes. On a personal note- as someone with PCOS, the representation of living with those challenges and how they impact your psyche was great to see. Additionally, being from Northern Michigan- love seeing TC as a setting! I sincerely hope we get Nathalie’s story next. Thank you for the ARC

Thank you Nicole Cubba for the arc of Love on the Line! This was such a cute read and perfect for summer.

Maren Rivers and Jack Walters are thrown together and forced to plan a combined bachelor/bachelorette party for their friends (the couple from Nicole’s first book, A Play for the Heart). Jack, a pro football player, has been trying to break down the walls Maren (a marine biologist) has put around her heart a long time ago. His charming smile and sincere, sweet personality would have anyone else falling over in seconds, but Maren is determined to not let her feelings run the show.

As they work more and more to make the getaway for their friends something special, Jack shows Maren all the different ways he wants to be there for her and love her. Maren grows the most in Love on the Line — she has past relationship trauma, a toxic work environment, and PCOS that all contribute to why she guards her heart. I felt like I could relate to Maren in so many ways, especially when it comes to hoarding cheese flavored snacks during “that time.”

There are so many things that worked so well in this book and I think so many things that fell equally as flat. While Nicole did give lots of opportunities for conflict to happen and for Jack and Maren to work through problems (together and separately) in order to become stronger individuals and a stronger couple, I think that there were almost too many opportunities that the ones depicted weren’t able to go into enough detail. Either the book needed to be longer so the conflicts could have been more strenuous and taken more than a paragraph to resolve, or like half of the conflicts needed to be taken out in order to flesh them out.
Because so much of the conflict was resolved so quickly, I felt like I didn’t really get to know Jack and Maren on a deeper level, and I kind of felt like I had to read the first book to understand how they met better.

But, I did love all of the side characters and their friend group! All of the banter and jokes and love between everyone is what I would want for my adult friend group. I want to go back and read the first book so I can read the first love story. I also think the book sets up other characters’ books really well. I also thought that the spice in the book was great! And I loved the epilogue — so cute and honestly the perfect ended for the book!

ARC Review 🤍 I love a good sports romance, especially professional football (or hockey) and I loved this book! I admittedly have not read the first in the series, but it's now a MUST to go back and read it. The characters in that book have a pretty big presence in this one, so I can't wait to read their story.

Maren is guarded and scared of being hurt, and I could relate to her thoughts and feelings regarding her body so much. But she is such a genuine person! She's strong, sassy, and hilarious. She has no problem having fun and being herself while still putting up walls to protect herself, and I think I relate to that. She also has PCOS, as do I, so I liked the representation of it.

Jack is so caring and sweet. They met two years prior, and he pined for her ever since, not even being with another woman in that time, but he didn't push her. He was happy to be her friend and tease her a little, too. The Maren baby nickname was ADORABLE! He is very attentive to her and pays attention to everything she says and all her preferences.

The banter was amazing and started super early in the book, which had me loving it right away. The pacing of the story and their relationship was honestly perfect. I like that the book started 2 years after they met so they knew each other well already. Jack just had to keep chipping away at her walls, and she had to see how genuine he was, and it all happened on a perfect timeline. There was a perfect amount of spicy scenes, and they were good ones!

Their friend group was amazing. They all had different personalities but got along so well. I really enjoyed the scenes of all of them together. There's gotta be a third book coming, right?! I NEED more of Deon. He's the attractive quarterback who very clearly has a lot of personality hidden away. The scene with the pretzels was hilarious. I need to see him end up with Nathalie!

The epilogue was chef's kiss! I loved it. This author is now a must read for me!

📖 Short Synopsis
Maren and Jack find themselves landing the roles of Maid of Honour and Best Man for their best friends, Henry and Sawyer’s, wedding. Jack, a professional football player, fell for Maren the second he laid eyes on her while Maren’s interaction with Jack are feisty and stand-offish. When their friends decide upon a joint bachelor and bachelorette, Jack and Maren are forced to work together to plan the getaway for them and their friends. While the two work together to plan the getaway, and spend ten days together, Maren begins to witness the caring and attentive side that Jack has to offer, challenging her initial feelings about him. Through this experience, Maren begins to work through her insecurities and begins to open herself up to the possibility of being loved in a way that she wants and desires.

💭Thoughts

I LOVED Jack and Maren!

Maren was such a relatable character who worked through insecurities of feeling like she is “too much” for others and the struggles that come with battling PCOS. Maren is a feisty and very loveable character.

“When I look at the stars, I think of you.”

Jack was kind, patient and thoughtful. He paid attention to all of the little details regarding Maren and was so kind and understanding when Maren got in her head. He never batted an eye and always went above and beyond to show Maren just how much he cares. I swooned throughout the whole book at how amazing he is! Everyone NEEDS a Jack in their life.

“Life is far too short to hide how deeply I love you.”

Let me start out by saying that Maren and Jack are everything! I loved their banter, their individual and relationship development, their story, and how they're vulnerable with each other. The found family this series is creating is absolutely amazing and I love how we see the relationships grow and change.

Maren thinking she is both too much and not enough hit me really hard since I think it's something a lot of readers can relate to. I know it's something I've struggled with and it made Maren such a relatable character that I couldn't help but root for as I wanted her to find her person (and people) that love her for her. Did I cry while reading some of her scenes? Oh, most definitely, and it just made me love the book more. Jack is absolutely perfect for Maren (and vice versa), and I love their awkward, silly, just perfect for them story.

These romances that Nicole writes becomes books that touch your heart and soul and leave an impact.
I love that she creates such relatable characters and stories. Her books remind you that love is hard, awkward, full of miscommunications, figuring out your feelings, and trusting someone with the most important parts of you. I laughed, I cried, and I fell in love every second of this book.

While you could read this book as a standalone, I highly recommend you read the entire series because you'll fall in love just like I did!

I highly recommend this book, and the entire series! 5 stars, and I'll most definitely be reading everything that Nicole writes!

Book friends, time to meet Maren and Jack! I'm officially coining the phrase "cozy romance" thanks to this book. This story was a low angst, low stakes, slice of life story of two people learning how to love each other. There is no third act break up and no contrived drama-just stargazing on the shores of Lake Michigan and learning that someone can still love you even after they've accidentally seen you wax your chin.

I loved Jack's sense of humor and his ability to help Maren take a deep breath and think her problem through. Jack manages to reassure and tease Maren without being hurtful and is unwavering in his willingness to show her that not only does he love her, but she is worthy of love. Oh, and he gardens and can spot hanger from a mile away. 😍 Vital qualities in a man!

Maren works to love herself, but her insecurities plague her. We can all identify with Maren-her anxiety, her up and down body image, her worries that she won't be enough, or, even worse, she'll be TOO much. Much of Maren's battle is so relatable--learning to trust that someone could see even the parts of us that we don't like, and still love us.

Good for People Who:
✨Love tide pools
✨Just finished a mafia romance and need something light to recover with.
✨Need to be reminded that there's joy in a simple love story.
✨Enjoy Ali Hazelwood.

Very grateful to have received an advanced copy of this one and look forward to the author's future books!

Thank you for selecting me to be an ARC reader! This book was absolutely adorable in all the best ways! Jack and Maren’s characters were extremely fleshed out and relatable. The progression of their relationship was realistic and extremely likable as well. Maren’s character also brings to light the discussion that every day women face from society, other men, and their own personal demons where they might be seen as “too much”. Maren’s character development along with Jack’s support tells the message that you are enough and never stop being yourself.

The secondary characters were so fun and the plot was easy to grasp onto. It was a super lovely lighthearted read and I found myself laughing out loud to Nicole’s quick wit and situational humor. My only criticism would be that some portions in the books felt unrealistic (the epilogue and the beginning where the guys are eating food and talking about girls are two that come to mind). But overall a wonderful read I recommend to any romance lover!

Having part of the book take place in Traverse City was also a plus for this Michigander. 😉

There’s no reason for this book to make me feel all the feels. Between Jack and Maren, and also their friends, I laughed out loud and I felt seen, especially in Maren.

I think one of the things that made me love this so much was that I KNOW these characters in my life, I KNOW the friends that come up with these grand schemes and banter back and forth like siblings. This was such a relatable novel to me because of it.

While now I have to go back and read Henry and Sawyer’s story, Jack and Maren’s did not disappoint. Jack is definitely the gold retriever of the group while Maren definitely gives black cat vibes, if you’ve ever heard that comparison, and I totally understand why they are both the way they are from the history that we’re given in their lives.

I don’t like to give spoilers out in my reviews because I don’t like when someone ruins something for me before I’ve even had the chance to make my own decision about it, but I think you won’t be disappointed if you give this fun read a chance.

In Nicole Cubba's second book in The Seattle Mavericks series we meet two love birds destined for each other but on the opposite side of the spectrum. Maren is a scientist obsessed with her job and Cheez-it's, but knows she needs to keep her distance from Mr. Jack Walters who has it bad for her.

This story not only showcases these two as they learn more about themselves but also how the two learn from each other. Maren learns to think of herself more in a positive viewpoint where Jack realizes how amazing love with the right person can be.

I received this lovely book as an ARC and I am so happy I did! I found another author to add to my growing collection of books. Maren and Jack were very relatable characters to read and I found myself falling in love with the sub characters in the story as well. Only downsize for me was that their connection was very immediate where I like a bit of a slow burn with my romance.

If you want a semi fast burn with a splash of Enemies to Lovers this needs to be your next read!

first of all I would like the author for sending me an ARC copy of this book. It was actually a cute book, I liked the style of writing, it was very flowy, to the point that I was at page 200 without evern realising. The storyline was, in my opinion a bit too rushed, as in so much happened in such a short amount of time, but insta-love sometimes happen. I didn’t particularly like Maren because I believe she didn’t have much progress throughout the book, she clung to her insecurities without trying to fight them and it’s not something I personally like. I, on the other hand, really liked Jack, he was so thoughtful and considerate; I really loved his reaction to finding Maren’s condition out, he never heard of PCOS so he did a research on it, all people should do that before shaming people with PCOS for their symptoms. As a woman with PCOS, I really appreciated the representation even though I believe it could have been talked about a bit more. All in all it was a good book and I recommend it

I stumbled upon this book in a post from a curvy girls bookstagram account that I follow. I did not read the first book in this series, but I didn't feel like I needed it to get into this story, so it can be read as a stand alone. STEM FMC in marine biology and surprise STEM MMC as well. The MMC is a pro footballer, but his undergrad degree was in biology, so they get nerdy together!. I am always looking for novels with women in STEM, and I'm usually not a fan of sports romances, but this hit all the right spots. I don't think I have ever identified so much with the mental workings of an FMC in my life. As a curvy STEM girl with all of the anxiety, self doubt, and shitty male coworkers, I felt really seen, and the way the MMC loves her is just perfection. There is no third act breakup, which is an extra bonus. I literally laughed out loud with the drunken ramblings of the FMC after a bachelorette party, like I was almost crying laughing. So glad I found this book; I'll be reading the other books in the series as well. Great spice, good plot, and well written.

Oh. My. Gosh. When I say I’m obsessed, I mean it. I devoured this story and it will forever live in my head and heart rent free. I’ve never related to a character so much. Maren will forever be special to me. I felt all of the emotions from this one. Science, football, a book club, astrology, an amazing green house, a bachelor/bachelorette party getaway, great friends and company, lots of spice (they were spicing it up for sure) and love that will make you want to vomit glitter. Obsessed.

Marine biologist, Maren gets stuck planning her best friend’s bachelor/bachelorette party with Football sensation and her kryptonite, Jack. Jack has been head over heels for Maren since they had a heated argument in a bar. Will they be able to plan the getaway and get along? Will Maren finally give into her feelings? YOU GOTTA READ IT TO FIND OUT!

Find someone who loves you more than their favorite comfort snack.

ARC Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
The first time I read the plot, I was captivated and eager to read this book, and honestly, I wasn't wrong because it is simply perfect.

The characters connect very well and adapt to the plot in a way that is expected in all books but not all achieve.
My only but is that I would have liked to have more of Maren and Jack in this vibe of one flirting and the other pretending not to notice. However, this is compensated by the time they spend being happy with each other, so even though it's nerve-wracking when a third-act breakup suddenly appears, (spoiler: this doesn't happens) you just keep being happy with them being happy.
I have always loved protagonists who seem like they would unsubscribe you from this life, but in reality, they are cinnamon rolls, and Jack is no exception.
As for the writing style, I found it very good, very fluid, and easy to read and follow."

I received this book as an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Let me tell you, this book has stolen my heart. I cried in this book, I laughed in this book, I wanted to go to gaol when reading this book. It made me feel all of the emotions. Being inside Marens head was very relatable at times which made me even more connected to the character! Seeing how Jack reacted to her PCOS made my heart melt. I never wanted this book to need. When it came to the epilogue I was sad that it was going to end. I could read 1000 more pages of this couple and just be so happy. I have to go back and read the first book in the series. This was absolutely amazing and I would not change a thing about it. As the dedication says “for anyone who has ever felt unworthy, or unwanted. There is someone out there who will love every part of you, more then plants love carbon dioxide. Keep searching”

I received an eARC of this book for an honest review!

Maren reminds me a lot of myself. Always hungry. Needing caffeine. Hates people. I loved this book more than the first in the series. Maren and Jack are everything and their friend group is soooo fun. It was also super spicy, which I loved. The only thing I wish was different was that I would’ve loved to see more Nhatalie in this one. She was such a major character in the first, yet she was barely in this one. I’m hoping maybe she’ll get her own book??? I adored this story so much, though. Nicole did an amazing job with this. I also loved that a portion of this book was based in my home state! Overall, a great read. Absolutely beautiful, heartwarming, all the emotions. Fantastic plot, characters, and spice. I would give this more than 5 stars if I could.

I received this book as an ARC, and I feel SO privileged to have read this early. Jack and Maren are GOALS!

The only thing better than the expertly written characters, is the love you can feel the author had for them as she wrote. The story was so smart and eloquent that I wanted another 300 pages.

Jack is head over heels for Maren. And his nickname for her, “Maren Baby” is the sweetest thing I’ve ever read. He is the ultimate book boyfriend. I have read tons of sports romance novels. And I love that the author doesn’t put his wealth at the forefront of the relationship.

This story has everything. Spice, hilarious banter and relatable real life issues. The nod to PCOS was done so well and with so much tact and grace.

I’m so glad I read this book and can’t wait for more from Nicole Cubba!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Loved it!

Maren was a character you could envision yourself becoming friends with. She’s humorous and relatable.

I received this book as an ARC review. Often those are lacking something. The dialogue can be unrealistic or the story just isn’t quite right. This one had none of those issues. It felt like a preview of the next hit! I had never read the first one, but that didn’t stop me from understanding and enjoying this one. I’m excited to read about all of their friends and how they find love.

The only thing that held me back from 5 stars was how long it took to get to the spicy parts. Maren holds herself back with Jack when I would have liked to see some heat earlier on. They definitely got there. It just took a bit more of the book before they did.

In Love on The Line, we see pretty quickly NFL pro-Jack has feelings for Maren when they are asked to help plan their friend’s joint bachelor and bachelorette party. This is the second book in the Seattle Mavericks series. Maren is a Marine Biologist that cautious about starting anything with Jack even though she likes him. I feel like it reminded me of a time when I liked someone they liked me and all of our friends now, but we never knew, until we were older, but in this case, it came out surprisingly. With a little bit of spice, but not too much this read will keep you on your toes. I didn’t expect what we got in the last three minutes of the book, but it was super sweet. super sweet ending.

this was cute bht a little disappointing, all the “fighting” and debating and shit from the first book that made their relationship what it is in the first book and had me so excited for this one & there was zero arguing they were immediately sweet to each other and falling in love. don’t get me wrong the relationship was super cute but still. he’s the big ass football player with the biggest smile and goofy personality & she’s the ocean scientist will walls up and hides her emotions behind her loud, straight forward scary persona. i like that he taught her how her feelings are valid and to just communicate with him rather than spiraling in her own mind. overall the book was cute and the spice was good but it wasn’t as good as i thought it would be.
