Rate this book

USA TODAY bestselling author, M.A. Rothman, is one of the most unlikely novelists you'll ever meet. He's an engineer first and foremost, with a background in the sciences, and somehow or another, this writing habit of his has turned into a bit more than just a run-of-the-mill hobby.

He primarily writes stories that focus on two things: technology and international intrigue. This writing tends to span the genres of science fiction, techno-thriller, and mainstream thrillers.

When not writing, he enjoys cooking, learning about new technology, travel, and spending time with his family.

seguimos!

Excellent thriller featuring Yoder. Still working with the New York Mafia, he becomes involved searching for a kidnapped granddaughter of a Yakusa head. Throw in an over zealous FBI agent who wants to use Yoder for his own purpose as well as major child trafficking criminals, and you have one hell of a novel. Several sub plots that eventually tie together keep the reader guessing. Don't skip anything as you might miss information you will need later.

Can be read as a stand alone but reading the first of the series helps. Ending sets up the next novel

I had to wait six months from the time I finished the first Levi Yoder thriller ("Perimeter') until I could get my hands on the second installment of this fantastic series. Yoder's skills as a "made man" are without peer. His eidetic memory is amazing. But the most important tool working for him is the size of his heart. As he sees children being kidnapped, abused, and sold, he suffers with them, but he also does something about it. New characters added in this book complement him and his skills perfectly. Already looking forward to the next book in the series.

I've been hooked on MA Rothman since Primordial Threat. I could not wait to meet this Levi character that I had read about in blurbs....Jason Bourne/James Bond-ish.... after reading Perimeter, the first Levi Yoder, I swore I would one click and pre-order, everyone, everytime. I am so glad I did. This book, The Inside Man did not disappoint!!
((I was a little sad to see Madison end things....maybe she'll be back...who knows? I am completely interested to see where things go with Lucy. Her story, her potential....Yes, please.
I can't wait for Book 3, and anything else that Rothman chooses to write.
Child sex trafficking isn't a palatable topic, it's ugly, it's vile, it's a lucrative evil business, and it's so very real.
Kudos to MA Rothman for including a link for more information, and how to support this fight, and for donating the proceeds from this book. Who does that!?!
One of my new favorite authors, that's who.

"The Inside Man" by M.A. Rothman, is a 2019 release brought to life by the skilled narration of Tim Campbell. This 2nd installment in the Levi Yoder series is a gripping blend of crime thriller and character-driven drama, offering a unique twist on the mafia narrative that sets it apart from typical genre fare. This audiobook is a compact yet intense journey into a world of loyalty, deception, and moral ambiguity.

Levi Yoder, the protagonist, is a fascinating enigma - a former Amish man turned mafia "fixer" with a conscience that both guides and complicates his actions. Rothman crafts Levi as a multifaceted character, balancing his hardened exterior with an unwavering moral code. In "The Inside Man," Levi is tasked with rescuing the kidnapped grandchild of a Japanese mob boss, a mission that plunges him into a chaotic underworld teeming with danger. The stakes escalate when he's falsely accused of a series of brutal crimes, forcing him into an uneasy alliance with the FBI. They offer him a deal: leverage his mob connections to investigate the murders of undercover agents or face jail time with no chance to clear his name. This high-stakes dilemma drives the narrative, as Levi hunts a serial killer whose trail might lead uncomfortably close to home.

Rothman’s storytelling shines in its pacing and world-building. The plot unfolds with a relentless energy, weaving together threads of organized crime, international intrigue, and personal redemption. The audiobook’s strength lies in its ability to keep listeners guessing, with twists that feel earned rather than contrived. Levi’s journey is as much about unraveling external mysteries as it is about confronting his own identity - a man caught between the ruthless loyalty of the mafia and his innate sense of justice.

Tim Campbell’s narration elevates the experience significantly. His voice carries a gravitas that suits Levi’s complex nature, shifting seamlessly between the character’s quiet introspection and the tense, action-packed confrontations. Campbell’s ability to differentiate characters through subtle vocal shifts adds depth to the ensemble, making the dialogue-driven scenes particularly immersive. His performance enhances the emotional weight of Levi’s predicament, drawing listeners into the fixer’s conflicted world.

Highlights include the vivid depiction of the mafia’s inner workings and the tense cat-and-mouse game between Levi and the unseen killer. Rothman’s background in technology also peeks through, with clever details that ground the story in a believable reality without overwhelming the narrative. "The Inside Man" reflects strong storytelling and stellar narration. It’s a standout in its genre, blending action and introspection into a satisfying, thought-provoking package.

This book was such a disappointment after the first. The plot was contrived, there were large gaps between book 1 and 2 that had to be plugged up with random information (i.e. where and when did he rescue all these children). And what was the deal with his girlfriend dumping him, and exiting. Very convenient if you need some random Chinese mobster dragon lady to become part of his life. I think that he might not have so many Tim Ballard references if it had been written this past year. Ooops! Will definitely not continue this series.

A little more attention to detail ...

The author takes pride in his research of the technology featured in the book — as well he should. But a little more proofreading was in order. The sheer number of typos and/or grammatical errors was very distracting. These included missing words, extraneous words, plural subjects with singular verbs, and so on. These stall the reader’s eye and prevent the natural flow of the story.

The story, however, was woven beautifully to bring together what begin as separate, seemingly unrelated events to a satisfactory conclusion. As with his previous book, Perimeter, Rothman creates complex characters to take the reader on a journey that is thrilling and sometimes gruesome, but with the right amount of humor and humanity. I’m looking forward to Book 3.

Thank you to author Mike Rothman for this Kindle copy of The Inside Man. Thanks to Goodreads for hosting this opportunity.

I really liked it. The story is well done with a nice pace to it. Good set of characters in a book of a very serious nature. The only downfall, and I see this WAY too often, is a lack of editing - a godd couple dozen errors in thi copy recieved I. Se what I mean?

Otherwise, this is a solid 4-star.

Wow !!!

You had me at a perimeter, Lazarus ( I know only his mother call’s him that) Levi it is ! What a creative write you are Mike. Especially your line about chapter 5, verses 20 and 21. An eye opener for the world , especially the protests going on today at colleges and universities across the world from people who don’t have a clue to the realities of the situation. Thank you!! Onwards to book 3

Great Story

This was really a good story. I read the first one in this series and forgot to rate it because I immediately started this one. Love the main character and the name attached to him. "an angel in wolf's clothing". I like the way he interacts with all types and races of people, showing in the end we're all people. Some good, some bad, but all human. I'm starting the next book in the series after this entry and will be following this author from now on.

There’s a pattern developing with the Levi Yoder series. In book one he gets involved with the CIA which helps move the plot along. In book two he is quickly dumped by his CIA girlfriend so he is available for a very interesting Chinese lady who doesn’t like to be touched. She turns out to be the widow of tong leader and is involved with rooting out the purveyors of child trafficking as part of a mysterious NGO with almost unlimited powers to get things done. Levi gets arrested by the FBI and the FBI helps facilitate the plot in this adventure. There are lots of cool devices in this one and Levi refers his Q to the mob and.Q becomes a fixture at mob headquarters on Park Avenue as he sweeps for bugs and reformats their computers. The Mafia, by the way, is portrayed as a noble bunch who have certain high standards involving hurting children. They don’t. They are likable even when they are torturing people or getting rid of bodies. Levi is rescuing street kids and whisking them off to Amish land where his mom looks out for them. That’s how he gets involved with the Chinese lady who doesn’t like to be touched but who does like to walk around stark naked. The book begins with a kidnapping of the granddaughter of a Japanese yakuza boss. He hires Levi to find the child and this is how Levi gets involved with the FBI. I’m deferring book three for a while. But I am anxious to find out which three letter agency will challenge him and help him solve his mystery. The ending of the book takes place geographically almost within site of where I live. Perhaps the author should have spent a bit more time map reading as the route, the way he outlines it, wouldn’t get him to where he had the characters end up right on the Canadian border. There is a helpful afterword in the book where the author explains some of the context and makes it clear that he is only trying to entertain. He does a good job of that. It’s a decent series and like everyone says: a very interesting protagonist.

(minor spoilers with a heads-up)

I started the series because it was advertised to be a fit for Jack Reacher fans.
But I gotta say I see very few similarities.

Jack Reacher is a one man-army who does things mostly by himself, that's what I like about the books.

But with Levi it's quite different.

*minor spoilers*

He has lots of people around and agencies on his side, helping him, they even supply him with gadgets (like Bond's Q), do jobs for him, tap into national agencies' databases etc etc. so Levi can basically get any information he wants.

Reacher has his experience and skill from his job as an MP.
Levi has his skills only partially from his job as a fixer. Lots of his skills he acquired in his 10 year hiatus he took after a catastrophic event in his life.
In many situations when a certain skill is needed, the author just adds the fact that Levi acquired that skill during this period.
He can shoot a sniper rifle like a pro, in that case I found no mention where he learned that. You have to assume it happened in that period.
All in all he can do anything and even has some supernatural abilities (they're kind of explained) , which I personally don't like at all.
It makes him some kind of an Übermensch.
Also other facts about Levi's past seem to be added/altered as it fits the story (the orphans he takes care of at home were never mentioned in the first book).

So all in all my take is you can't compare Levi Yoder with Jack Reacher.
In addition Levi is a lot less believable character compared to Jack Reacher.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Once character was defined in the first book of this series ("Perimeter"), I really liked this one.
There are still some details not explained enough but new partner for Levi replacing the one from the previous book (not exactly a full time partner but somebody to work together in some situations) and the new "black" organization appearing in this book are funny.
Child traffic is the plot for this book and suddenly it looks all the gangs are really not wanting to be involved with that dirty business...at least the mobsters Levi contact with.
Will keep reading books in this series to check how Levi's character will be developed and what situations will happen and how Levi is going to deal with them.

Not as good as the first.

In the first book, Levi was introduced and found to have special healing powers introduced into him by an Ankh. He also had special martial arts training in Japan. In this book, these attributes were not emphasized enough, or at all. The author gave him intriguing qualities in book 1, but did not use them to full strength here. That is what made him almost like a super hero in book 1. These assets needed to be utilized more. He should beat up a bad guy, get injured, heal and go do it again.

I gave it five stars but...

Many years ago as a blond tiny female teenager, I was warned about going into the city alone. I was considered a prime target to end up trafficked to the Middle East. This story did an excellent job of exposing people to the trafficking situation while giving them adventure and satisfaction.

My only issue with this book was that I was hoping for more on what happened to him with the ankh in the last book. I have been surprised that he has not tried to track it down. Also, surely there are more others like him.

I enjoyed reading this thriller - it was exciting and fun to read. Although the main subject matter was horrible (exploitative trafficking in underage minors), the premise was fascinating. Levi Yoder is a fixer for and American criminal organization who is "loaned" to the Japanese Yakuza to solve a kidnapping. His unique skills allow him to resolve the problem, but not without several threatening incidents. I will look forward to reading more books by M.A. Rothman.

Unexpected

Levi is very complex. Ties to the mob, unusual friends, vigilante tendencies. An angel in wolf's clothing- mentioned in the book. He fight against child trafficking, helps those in need, and gets blackmailed by the feds to help in an investigation. Levi meets an unusual female dynamo along the way, Lucy and Levi end up working together to rescue some children. This was very entertaining and I will continue with this author.

Good Story

I find that I am totally behind Levi Yoder as a man who saves the underdog. Normally I would not root for someone who belongs to a crime syndicate, but he does so much good in the world despite his alliance to the bad. Cannot wait to read more stories of Levi and what he does to right more wrongs.

Rothman spins a good yarn with a terrible subject matter. Sci-fi fans probably love the cross-over between the genres; to me they were a bit of a distraction but overall this is still a good read. Nice touch to include an addendum to let us know what the author really thinks about the feasibility of his inventions

This book lived up to the ratings. I did not read the first in this series, but this stood on its own just fine. There was a lot going on with different storylines and it was distracting at times, as they did not seem to be related. I did like the code that Levi adheres to and liked the ending. I'll read more from his author.

Excellent read.

Not as gripping a read as the initial novel it is a sequel to, but any author who can take the horrid subject of child sex trafficking and use it as a compelling read in a novel deserves five stars.

Surprised and entertained

I’m not a critic of books. My only criterion is entertainment. I recognize when stories could be better and when to put the down and start something new. I was never tempted to put the first and second Levi Yoder books down. They have been page turners.
