I couldn't even finish this. It's so corny and the fan-service is ridiculous, there's not an enjoyable character in the whole bunch, the main character is so rude (literally one of the first lines out of his mouth is to body-shame the first sister he meets)... the only good thing about this manga is the cute art style, and that's not enough to convince me to power through this mess.
Thank you so much to Vine for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
A pretty typical Japanese romantic comedy with an undeserving protagonist and a harem of potential girlfriends. The twist here, as the title reveals, is that the girls are actually quintuplets. The sisters are all failing high school and need a tutor who can break through their wild and stubborn ways and actually help them learn...and maybe teach them a little bit about love.
Kind of corny and a bit heavy on fan service.
It might be worth another look, but it seems like it will probably unwind in a fairly predictable manner.
So we have a brillant, yet egotistical, somewhat funny guy who doesn't like people but is proud of how smart he is. In comes a cute, red headed girl, he meets at lunch. Except they argue who can sit at a empty table, leading to a fight, and him dismissing her. He then later finds out he has to tutor her because her father set up a deal with his father for pay. Then he finds out there's 5 of them, all sisters...good times begin.
We're going to have a wide range of characters because have 5 very different sisters plus Futaro, out main lead, who's focus is to help these girls so his family doesn't go homeless. It's interesting but also of course the girls are either short with him, cute, dumb as shit, or flirtatious. This book's main focus is all of them first couple of chapters, and then focusing on Miku, the weird one with headphones on all the time. Those are actually the strongest chapters, the one on one help build both characters. Also, Miku is the cutest, so she wins.
But I'm not completely interested in the whole crew. It's a lot, and some feel a bit too typical but it could change my mind later. However, it's cute enough, and funny enough, for me to read on! A 3.5 out of 5, I'll bump it to a 4 for Miku.
While the girls were pretty cute, their personalities were not so much. I honestly don't really remember who is who yet, so hopefully they get more distinct personalities as it goes along. I do like that Miku (I think shes the one with headphones) seams to be open to studying and improving herself. I'm also wondering about the girls relationship with their dad, as there are hints thats its not that good. As of now, I wouldn't buy it, but since comixology has it, I'll read it.
The Quintessential Quintuplets, Vol. 1 (My Kindle Review)
Futaro Uesugi is a no-nonsense high school sophomore who’s in a financial strain and it shows to his peers. Only day however, he comes across a well-paying private tutoring job and he’s shocked to discover that he’ll be tutoring five sisters. The rich Nanako quintuplets are all very beautiful with their pink-red hair, but they also turn out to have very poor school marks and hardheaded personalities. Yet despite their attitudes towards him, Futaro is determined to help them ace their marks and to earn their trust.
“TQQ” is an interesting romantic manga that starts off very different than I thought. At first it may look like a typical harem manga, but once you jump in, it’s has a lot of spark-like personality. The quintuplets also bring a lot of variety in terms of character and interaction. For now, it’s definitely a different type of romance that’s “five” of a kind. A- (91%/Excellent)
My favorite wholesome harem manga is now in full color!
It's my fervent wish that an official English be done in this format as well. This story shines in full color and I will double dip to get them on my shelves.
This story feels a bit old. It has the harem set up -- one boy with multiple girls --- except for one thing: in volume one it is clear that at least one of the girls will end up in love (and be loved) but for the first four chapters, it is distrust and dislike all around.
99% of the story is told in present-tense flashback viewpoint of one Futaro, an excellent student whose family is suffering under crippling debt. His father (who behaves more like a careful older brother) arranges for him to tutor for extra income. The problem is that Futaro has no idea that he is not tutoring one rich girl but 5 identical sisters. Well, genetically they may be identically but they have personalities with one two things in common -- they hate school and they seem unwilling to obey their father in any way.
To be blunt, this seems like a very standard harem set-up for a manga and for a romance. Nothing really unique or intriguing to make me want to keep reading.

Not too bad. Not really liking the girls, but my son loves this anime and series so I'll continue to read them, cause he really wants to take about them. 😁
What happens when you have to tutor not one girl.. but 5. And none of them are really into studying?
I saw this one on Google Play, the first one was free, so I thought it would be a fun one to try out. I think I tried the anime, but it just didn’t work. But I was curious if the manga would be a bit different (plus, it would probably already help not hearing the girls XD).
Well, not really, the girls really were annoying and ungrateful. Instead of being happy that someone is helping them they are fleeing, thinking of plans, distracting him, and one of the girls even poisoned him with a sleeping potion (like wtf). I am trying to like these girls but other than Yotsuba (who just a bit ditzy and seems the most childish) and Miku (whose love for war lords was both adorable and funny) I just couldn’t. The girl with the stars in her hair (Itsuki) was just a bit too deredere for me and way annoying. Sure, at one point I could understand her (after the guy made a remark about her eating a lot), but the rest? No. Then there is Ichika, clearly the most adult (and with that I mean the most trying to look sexy) who just doesn’t seem to be bothered. And lastly we have the hell spawn herself, Nino. The queen of evil plans and the one who tries the hardest to thwart Fuutarou’s plans. The one who also did the sleeping potion shit. Yep. I was mostly just frustrated with the girls so I am happy that there was also a big portion of the book focussing on Miku, the one of the girls I really liked. I had such a laugh in the beginning, yes she was fleeing, but she tried to throw him off in a funny way. And after he proves that he knows his stuff she is dedicated to him helping out.
And well, I guess despite what I said above (before the Miku part), I did have fun reading it. The art I found pretty. I did think it was hilarious that he didn’t know they were sisters (I mean, all reddish hair and bright blue eyes and pretty much the same face). I liked that we found out more about Fuutarou’s home situation and loved how genki his sister is despite all that is going on. I did have some chuckles at what the girls tried to get out of studying. I loved that Fuutarou tried to make custom tests and custom things to help out each girl in the areas they needed help. The cover is adorable. Again Miku and Yotsuba. A typical harem/romance manga thing happens which had me both going OH NO and OH YES (yes, after years of watching anime and manga I am bit conflicted if I like certain overused things). It is great that Fuutarou, despite having to handle these girls and his home situation is still able to stay on top of his studies.
As you can see, plenty of good things, so I will keep on reading as I got volume 2 as well. I guess by the time this review goes up I will have read it and maybe even have a review ready (writing this December 14th).
4/5 (This review is for all 14 books in the series). The Quintessential Quintuplets contains many ingredients that make it a strong contender in the buddy love genre. With decent character work, cute designs, and the avoidance of cheesy drama, tropes, and distasteful fan service, it’s one of the better romance mangas out there.
MC Fuutaro, while somewhat unlikeable, grows and changes from a hardened, socially awkward teenager into one who sees the true value of relationships. This feel-good story has been done many times before, but Quintuplets can boldly say it carries substance and style. The series commits to organic character development as the reader sees the broader cast grow and change. Unfortunately the large amount of characters prevents key players from their development, resulting in an ending that doesn’t feel fully earned. While the eventual endgame romance still feels right, it needed more time.
For many of us, the buddy love story is the quintessential feel-good manga, and The Quintessential Quintuplets greatly delivers on that promise.
+ Unique premise; story beats and characters subvert expectations of genre + Avoids negatives often seen in genre; favors positive cliches over drama, tropes, or fan service - Main character work shallow due to poor pacing - Ending can be argued as decisive due to uneven character development
Expresiones faciales.- Son bastantes.
I give the novel The Quintessential Quintuplets by Negi Harubi 5 stars. I agree with the author’s opinion about the subject on the Quints. Firstly, when Uesugi is in the Quints house, he is getting Nino’s contact lenses. She comes and they both fall. Uesugi is on top of her and a cutscene happens where he is talking in his head saying, “The difficulty of dealing with each member of this Quintet of idiots” (Harubi 178). This is good because it says the whole theme of the story. Secondly, I like how Uesugi is characterized as cruel and insensitive. As he gets up from eating lunch Itsuki asks if he ate enough because of his small lunch portions. Uesugi responds with, “In fact I didn’t eat too little. You just ate too much. You’ll get fat” (Harubi 16). This shows how well Harubi characterized Uesugi. Furthermore, the foreshadowing was phenomenal as well. While three of the five Quints were walking home, Uesugi decided to follow them. He eventually gets caught by one of them and asks if Itsuki is her friend. Miku then said, “That girl isn’t my friend” (Harubi 36). This is great foreshadowing because the Quints don’t know he is their tutor and he doesn’t know that they are actually quintuplets. Moreover, the crisis had me utterly shocked reading it for the first time. When Uesugi follows Itsuki into their condo apartment he meets and confronts her at the doorstep. Then the rest of the Quints come in the elevator and Uesugi asks if she’s having a sleepover with her friend. Itsuki then hits him with, “No, we’re quintuplets” (Harubi 50). Harubi executed the crisis perfectly. It was as if I was Uesugi and I was finding out that they were all quintuplets. I was just as shocked as him. Finally, I was stunned and at a loss of words when it cuts to the cutscene of their Uesugi’s and one of the quintuplets' wedding day. Finding out it was all just a flashback had me speechless. Uesugi was talking to his Bride about the dream he had saying, “I was dreaming. About that day in my second year of high school. When I first met you. That day felt like a dream, and sure enough, I dreamt about it” (Harubi 54)
One boy is hired to help five sisters study well enough to pass their classes. What could go wrong?
Fuutarou Uesugi is a good student but his family is poor so when his father suggests that his son offers his services as a tutor to wipe out the family debt he decides to go for it. What he did not expect is the job that would pay 5 times a normal tutors pay is because his student is actually 5 sisters and each of them are different as can be. Even worse before he even knows who his students are he already got off on the wrong foot with one of them so he has to use that brain of his to figure out how to unlock their minds before he ends up failing his job and the one chance to save his family financially.
What I find interesting about this book is before we even see how he got involved with the quintuplets we see him and one of the sisters in wedding attire as he reflects back to the beginning were the story starts. Unless he is hallucinating this pretty much tells us he becomes so close to one of the girls that he will marry them. I can imagine with such a range of character types that those who become fans will read on in hopes that their best girl will hopefully be chosen. Only time will tell who will become the bride and who will be stuck as a bride's maid. :)
I found this book by looking on kindle unlimited at 2 am. I was half awake and was like “oh guess I’ll read that!” And went through the whole thing in about an hour. I gave it one star mostly because I feel like the writing was all over the place. I think the whole idea of the story though is really cool, and I would like to have seen it with more detail and a slower pace.
Genuinely think that is slightly better than the anime at starting the story. I can’t remember all of the first season so I am probably going to read this and rewatch the anime because I love torturing myself lol
