Amplify! My Fight for Asian America offers a meaningful look at the real stories behind the headlines, providing Asian Americans and allies of all backgrounds a vital resource to broaden their perspective on anti-Asian hate and contribute to positive social transformation.
February 24, 2020, started out like any other day for journalist and television anchor Dion Lim of San Francisco’s ABC News. Planning her pitches for the morning’s editorial meeting, she checked her Instagram account and saw a message from someone she didn’t recognize. Attached was a horrifying video in which men were beating and yelling racist slurs at an elderly Asian man who had been collecting cans in the Bayview neighborhood of San Francisco. Lim felt compelled to investigate the story, help the man who “looked freakishly like my dad,” and bring the perpetrators to justice. Thus began Lim’s four-years-and-counting quest to bring attention to the appalling rise of anti-Asian hate and violence in America. Amplify! My Fight for Asian America brings readers on an eye-opening journey alongside Lim, who has unwittingly become a national hero for her relentless fight for Asian American visibility.
Through deeply personal anecdotes about her own life as a Chinese American, exclusive interviews with survivors, activists, and historians, and incisive historical context, she provides the very first book to tackle one of the biggest political and social controversies of this century from the perspective of the AAPI community.
Dion Lim is a Emmy Award-winning TV news anchor and reporter at ABC7/KGO-TV in San Francisco, CA. She has made her mark as a minority climbing the competitive TV news ladder. But she stands apart as a professional journalist who is willing to share her own stories with viewers and readers, as well. (Just ask her about the time she anchored an 11pm newscast with a chicken wing bone stuck in her neckline!)
A sought-after speaker and emcee, she has hosted events with everyone from news legend Dan Rather to Hollywood celebrities like Patrick Dempsey and community groups, such as a leadership summit of 600+ attendees for immigrant women. She has contributed to the Huffington Post by Arianna Huffington’s personal invitation and has also written a series for Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls. She has been named one of America’s Top 18 Leaders in TV Under 34 by Broadcasting & Cable Magazine.
In her new book, coming out in 2019, Dion will share her stories — and the crucial lessons for women that she has learned along the way.
When she’s not writing, Dion and her husband, a professional poker player, are adventurous travelers who share a love of food, dachshunds, and the movie Crazy Rich Asians.
Sweet read, huge potential and enjoyable. It’s the kind of book that stays with me long after the final chapter. A few tweaks could really boost sales, visibility, and reviews if you’d like detailed suggestions

I’ve been following Dion Lim on social media for a couple of years, and I remember watching online a lot of the stories that she reported on that she mentions in her book. It was cool to see what it was like through her eyes and mind when these stories were happening a few years ago. I’m not good at writing book reviews, but I will say this: this book was worth the many months of waiting. The main message I got from Dion’s book was this: always speak out against injustice. Never let anyone keep you quiet, even when it’s the people closest to you that try to silence your voice. Speak out when you see innocent people being attacked and prejudiced against. There’s a lot you can do with your voice when you Amplify it, and Dion showed us this in her book. She reminds us that racism and violence won’t disappear right away, but we must still continue to speak out, fight, and defend those who can’t defend themselves. If people understood this, the world would be a better place, or at least improve more and more. Keep doing what you do, Dion.
