About the author

G.R.Indugopan, is a noted young writer in Malayalam literature who has written nine books, mostly novels. Regarded as a novelist with scientific bend, his Ice -196 C is the first technology novel in malalayam, based on nanotechnology and published by DC books. Muthalayani 100% Muthala deals with the issues of globalization. His other famous novel Manaljeevikal, focuses on the sad plight of people staying in the mineral sand mining areas of Kollam Chavara area. Iruttu Pathradhipar is a collection of short stories. He has bagged several noted awards like Abudabi Shakthi, Kumkumam, Ashan prize etc.
He is also the script writer of the Sreenivasan starred film, Chithariyavar, directed by Lalji. Recently he has scripted and directed the movie called Ottakkayyan where the director paints the screen with dark side of human nature to hint at the rotting core of this society.
He works as the senior sub editor of the Malayala Manorama daily. He lives in Trivandrum, Kerala, with his family.

പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ വായിക്കാനുള്ള പ്രചോദനം എന്റെ അച്ഛനാണ്.. അദ്ദേഹം ധാരാളം വായിക്കുന്നയാളാണ്. എന്നു വെച്ചാൽ ഇടതടവില്ലാതെ ബൃഹത്തായ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ അനായാസം വായിക്കുന്ന ഒരാൾ.. അച്ഛന്റെ വായനയുടെ ഏഴയലത്തു പോലും ഞാൻ എത്തിപ്പെടാറില്ല. പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ എനിക്ക് suggest ചെയ്യാറുള്ളതും അദ്ദേഹമാണ്. അതും ഞാൻ അങ്ങോട്ട് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടാൽ മാത്രം.
ഇത്തവണ പതിവിനു വിപരീതമായി ചോദിക്കാതെ തന്നെ ഒരു പുസ്തകം അദ്ദേഹം എനിക്ക് suggest ചെയ്തു. ആ പുസ്തകം ഞാൻ ഉറപ്പായും വായിക്കണമെന്നും അതൊരു അസാമാന്യ സൃഷ്ടിയാണെന്നും ത്രസിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വായനാനുഭവമായിരിക്കുമെന്നും പറഞ്ഞു.
അങ്ങനെ ഒരു buildup എന്റെ അച്ഛൻ തന്നാൽ പിന്നെ മുന്നും പിന്നും നോക്കണ്ട കാര്യമില്ലല്ലോ. മനസ്സിൽ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചതും പുസ്തകം കയ്യിലെത്തിച്ചു...

ജി ആർ ഇന്ദുഗോപന്റെ ആനോ.. നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൾക്കു മുൻപ് കേരളത്തിൽ നിന്നും റോമിലെ വത്തിക്കാനിൽ എത്തിപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ആനകുട്ടിയുടെ കഥ.. കഥയല്ല ചരിത്രം.. ഉദ്വേഗപൂർണമായ വായനയുടെ ഉത്സവം സമ്മാനിക്കുന്ന മനോഹരമായ രചന..
വായിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയാൽ ബുക്ക് താഴെ വെക്കാൻ പോലും തോന്നില്ല എന്നു ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞാൽ അത് അതിശയോക്തിയല്ല..
നിങ്ങളും വായിച്ചു നോക്കൂ..

One of the best books I have recently come across.
The story of an elephant cub sent to Portugal from India , by Calicut Zamorin, along with it's mahout, who had some hidden plans.
This book takes place from 1511 to 1517 when Portugal was at its zenith and Rome was ruled by the Meducci popes.

A scintillating tale which almost made me visualise all that was happening. The book is full of factual pictures, and enriched me regarding Indo Portugal history.

Will recommend to all malayalam readers.

This was also book 1 of my Bingo challenge, draw 24- a book > 500 pages.

1511 ഡിസംബർ കൊച്ചിയിൽനിന്ന് ലിസ്ബൻഡ് വഴി റൂമിലെത്തിയ ആനക്കുട്ടിയുടെ കഥയാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം. അതിനോടൊപ്പം തന്നെ ആ കാലഘട്ടവും ആനക്കാരനായ ചീരനേയും അടിമത്ത വ്യവസ്ഥയും വരച്ചു കാണിക്കുന്നു.

മലയാളത്തിൽ ക്രൈം/ഹൊററിന് പുറത്തുള്ള genre ഫിക്ഷൻ എഴുത്ത്‌ തന്നെ കുറവാണല്ലോ. അതിൽ തന്നെ ഹിസ്റ്റോറിക്കൽ ഫിക്ഷൻ വളരെ അപൂർവമായിരിക്കും. ജി ആർ ഇന്ദുഗോപന്റെ 'ആനോ' എന്ന ഈ നോവലിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും വല്യ പോസിറ്റീവ് ഘടകം തന്നെ ഈ genre ൽ ഒരു എപിക്ക് സ്വഭാവത്തോടെ ഒരു പുസ്തകം തയ്യാറാക്കാൻ പറ്റി എന്നതാണ്. കേരള ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും സുപ്രധാന സന്ദർഭങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണല്ലോ 15- 16 നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ പോർച്ചുഗീസ് നാവികരുടെ വരവും, അവരുടെ മത രാഷ്ട്രീയ അധികാര ഇടപെടൽ ഒക്കെ. ആ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ ഒരു ഫിക്ഷൻ work ന്റെ സാദ്ധ്യത നമ്മുടെ ഭാഷയിൽ ഇതുവരെ ആരും ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടില്ലേ എന്നത് തന്നെ ഒരു അദ്‌ഭുതമാണ്. സ്വാഭാവികമായി ഹിസ്റ്റോറിക്കൽ ഫിക്ഷൻ എഴുതാൻ ഒരുപാട് റിസർച്ച് ആവശ്യമാണ്. ആ effort ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ തീർച്ചയായും കാണാൻ പറ്റും. വാസ്കോ ദ ഗാമയും, പെഡ്രോ കബ്രാളും, സാമൂതിരിയും, തുഞ്ചത്തെഴുത്തച്ഛനും ഒക്കെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളായി വരുന്നു. നോവലിന്റെ പേര് സൂചിപ്പക്കുന്നത് പോലെ കേന്ദ്ര കഥാപാത്രം ആനയും, അതിന്റെ പാപ്പാനുമാണ്. യൂറോപ്പുകാർക്ക് അത്ഭുതമായ ഈ ജീവിയെ കേരളത്തിൽ നിന്ന് മാർപ്പാപ്പയ്ക്ക് സമർപ്പിക്കാൻ വേണ്ടി കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നതാണ് പശ്ചാത്തലം. ഒരു ഇന്ദുഗോപൻ നോവൽ പോലെ അതിൽ ഒളിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്ന ചതിയും, വഞ്ചനയും, സ്പൈ വർക്കുകളും, കൊലപാതക ഗൂഢാലോചനകളും, യൂറോപ്പിലെ മത രാഷ്ട്രീയ അധികാര പിടിവലിയും ഒക്കെ കടന്നു വരുന്നു. യൂറോപ്പിൽ എത്തിയതിന് ശേഷം പോർച്ചുഗീസ് രാജാവ് മാനുവലും, മാർപ്പാപ്പ ലൂയീ പത്താമനും.. ലോകപ്രശസ്ഥ ചിത്രകാരായ ഡാവിഞ്ചിയും, മൈക്കെലാഞ്ജലോയും, റാഫേലുമൊക്കെ പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളായി കടന്നുവരുന്നുണ്ട്.

കൂടികാഴ്ചകളും അതിലെ സംഭാഷണങ്ങളിലൂടെയും പ്ലോട്ട് ഉരുത്തിരിയുന്ന രീതിയിലാണ് നോവലിന്റെ form ഉള്ളത്. അതാണ് ഈ നോവലിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും നെഗറ്റീവ് ആയി തോന്നിയ സംഗതിയും. പറഞ്ഞത് പോലെ ഗൂഢാലോചന - ചതി പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ, ആരെയും വിശ്വസിക്കാൻ പറ്റാത്ത സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ പോലും, ആദ്യം കണ്ടുമുട്ടുന്ന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ പേജുകളോളം അവരുടെ ചരിത്രവും അവരുടെ ഉദ്ദേശങ്ങളും പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ് പല സന്ദർഭങ്ങളിലും. വായനക്കാർക്ക് ആ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ ഉദ്ദേശം മനസിലാക്കാൻ വേണ്ടിയാണെങ്കിലും, പല സ്ഥലങ്ങളും too much illogical over-exposition ആയി ഇത് മാറിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ആദ്യം ഈ നോവൽ വീക്കിലിയിൽ വന്നതുകൊണ്ട് അതിൽ അത്ര പ്രശ്നം തോന്നിയിട്ടുണ്ടാവില്ല... പക്ഷെ പുസ്തകമായി വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഈ continuous സംഭാഷങ്ങൾ ഒരുപാട് സ്ഥലത്ത്‌ മടുപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

പുസ്തകത്തിൽ ഈ ചരിത്രപശ്ചാത്തലത്തെ സാധൂകരിക്കാൻ ഒരുപാട് പെയിന്റിങ്ങുകളും, അന്നത്തെ map ഉം യാത്ര റൂട്ടുകളൊക്കെ ചിത്രസഹിതം കൊടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. പക്ഷെ 'ഡിസി' യുടെ ലോക്കൽ പേജസിൽ ഒരു ക്ലാരിറ്റി ഇല്ലാതെയായാണെന്ന് മാത്രം. സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാർഡ് കിട്ടിയ വകയിലെങ്കിലും, this novel deserves better pages and clear photographs എന്ന് തോന്നി.

G. R. Indugopan deserves all the praise for the brilliant brain work in Aano. Very enjoyable read. However, I believe a skilled editor could have made the novel even better.

Excellent novel... History, philosophy, romance, suspense.. everything blended smoothly. Never expected to read such a novel in Malayalam.

A very breezy read, even when this talks about a lot of atrocities of the 16th century, and as a historical fiction, there is tons of research, which is very apparent. But a lot of pages remind you a lot more about the writer's need to remind us of how much research has been done and how important the themes are; it breaks the suspension of disbelief that is important in fiction. The way the story moves is mostly through dialogue between people; it is not too reliant on internal monologues or descriptions of events, which made a lot of dialogue too out of place. The beginning of the novel was very intriguing. The way it weaved the history and fiction together with some great themes made it feel like a great start. But when it moved on, it felt like it was biting more than it could chew. There are just too many characters, events and themes that certain pages are devoted to just explaining stuff, which are direct events or themes in a way that doesn't feel like it flows with the rest of the book. Either the book should've been longer, or it just shouldn't have tried this much. I mean, I get the urge to include all the research you did and wanted to include as many historical figures of the time who could've been in the same place together. I would've definitely done that if I tried writing it, but an established writer should be better than that.
All the editing issues that were overlooked by DC while publishing it were also very distracting. I don't know if it's just in the print impression of the book I got or all the ones, but it is very sloppy editing.
Even with these problems I had with it, it was still an interesting read that had a lot of work done behind it.

ഏറെ ആകാംക്ഷയോടെ വായിച്ചു തീർത്ത ഒരു ഗ്രന്ഥമാണ് ജി. ആർ. ഇന്ദുഗോപന്റെ “ആനോ” എന്ന നോവൽ. ഏകദേശം 550 പേജുകൾ വരുന്ന ഈ ഗ്രന്ഥം ഒട്ടും വിരസതയില്ലാത�� രണ്ട് ദിവസം കൊണ്ട് വായിച്ചുതീർക്കാൻ സാധിച്ചത് ഇന്ദുഗോപൻ എന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരൻ സൃഷ്ടിച്ച ആശയലോകവും അതോടൊപ്പംതന്നെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭാഷയുടെ മാസ്മരികതയുമാണ്. പതിനാറാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ കൊച്ചിയിൽ നിന്നും റോമിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോയ കേശവൻ എന്ന ആനയുടെയും ചീരൻ എന്ന ആനപ്പാപ്പന്റെയും കഥയാണ് “ആനോ.” നവോത്ഥാന കാലത്ത് കേരളതീരത്തേക്ക് പാശ്ചാത്യ ലോകത്തിനു നിന്നും നടത്തിയ കപ്പലോട്ടങ്ങളും, മതത്തിന്റെ അവിശുദ്ധമായ രാഷ്ട്രീയലക്ഷ്യങ്ങളും, വെട്ടിപിടിക്കലും, തദ്ദേശീയരുടെ പ്രതിരോധശ്രമങ്ങളുമെല്ലാം ഈ നോവൽ ചർച്ച ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്. മലബാറിന്റെ തീരത്തേക്ക് പാഞ്ഞെത്തിയ പാശ്ചാത്യ അധിനിവേശത്തിനെതിരെയുള്ള പ്രതിരോധം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുവാൻ പലപ്പോഴായി പലകാരണങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ട് പരാജയപ്പെട്ട മലബാറിലെ വിത്യസ്ത വിഭാഗക്കാരായ ജനങ്ങൾ ഈ അധിനിവേശത്തിന് ചുക്കാൻ പിടിക്കുന്ന പോർച്ചുഗീസ് ചക്രവർത്തിയായ മാനുവൽ രാജാവിലെ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുവാനായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത ചാവേറാണ് ചീരൻ. അപ്രകാരം കൊച്ചിയിൽ നിന്നും റോമിൽ മാർപാപ്പയ്ക്ക് സമ്മാനിക്കുവാനായി കൊണ്ട് പോയ കേശവൻ എന്ന ആനയുടെ പാപ്പാനായി ചീരൻ നിയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ചീരന്റെ ജീവിതവും, അവന്റെ പ്രതിരോധങ്ങളും, അവന്റെ കലഹവും, പ്രണയവുമെല്ലാം ഈ നോവലിനെ ജൈവികതയിൽ മുന്നോട്ടുനയിക്കുന്നു. ഒപ്പം പാശ്ചാത്യ ജനതയുടെ അധിനിവേശശ്രമങ്ങളുടെ വേറിട്ട ചരിത്രവും ഈ നോവൽ അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. ജി. ആർ. ഇന്ദുഗോപൻ ഒരു വിസ്മയമാണ് ഈ നോവലിലൂടെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. കേവലം ഭാവനകൊണ്ട് മാത്രം ഉടലെടുത്ത ഒരു നോവൽ അല്ല ഇത്. അതിനപ്പുറമായി കഠിനമായ ചരിത്രഗവേഷണങ്ങൾ ഈ നോവലിന് പിന്നിലുണ്ട്. നല്ലൊരു വായനാനുഭവം സമ്മാനിച്ച നോവൽ.

Gopan masterfully intertwines fictional characters with historical figures, situating the narrative within the complex political machinations of the era, including an assassination plot that threatens to destabilize established power structures.

The author's meticulous attention to historical detail is particularly evident in the portrayal of Pope Leo X's ascension to the papacy and the subsequent ecclesiastical intrigues. Equally compelling is Gopan's nuanced examination of artistic rivalries among Renaissance luminaries under Medici patronage, exposing the delicate interplay between creative genius and aristocratic support that defined the period.

The relationship between the rare albino elephant—a creature of immense symbolic significance during this epoch—and its handler serves as an effective narrative device, offering readers a unique perspective on European Renaissance society and its fascination with exotic specimens from distant lands.

In sum, "Aanno" represents a worthy addition to the historical fiction genre, demonstrating Gopan's considerable skill in balancing historical authenticity with engaging storytelling. It is, without reservation, a volume deserving of one's literary attention.

ഞാൻ ഈ വർഷം വായിച്ച ഏറ്റവും മനോഹരമായ നോവൽ . ഇത് ചരിത്രത്തോട് വളരെ അടുത്ത് നിൽക്കുന്ന നോവലാണ് . I mean the book is 96%historical and 4% fiction. Many historical figures like vasco da gama, albuquerque, King Manuel, da vinci, rafel, michalangelo, zamorin, Columbus, pope Leo, kunjali marakkar and even our ezhuthachan comes as characters in this novel. And the most interesting part is that a baby elephant from Malabar connects these characters together. The pope love for this elephant became one of the main reason for the counter reformation which happened in Catholic church. നമ്മൾ സ്ക്കൂളിൽ പഠിക്കുന്നത് ഇന്നയാൾ ഇത്രകാലം ഇവിടെ ഭരിച്ചു... അല്ലേൽ വാസ്കോ ഡാ ഗാമ ഇൻഡ്യാ കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചു... എന്നതിൽ നിർത്തും. നമ്മൾ വിചാരിക്കും ഇവരെല്ലാം ഇതിന് ശേഷം അടിപൊളി ആയി സുഖിച്ച് ജീവിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടാവുമെന്ന് but that's not true. Many of their endings was miserable. We can find many contradictions here. For example King Manuel was the man who promoted expeditions and voyages which ended up in finding the sea route to india and south east asia but in life he rarely went outside his palace fearing assassination. The novel beautifully portrays the caste system in Kerala, politics of Europe and the hardships faced by Jews and their resistance. പിന്നെ ഇതിലെ ഭാഷ വളരെ വളരെ simple ആണ്.

പോർട്ടുഗീസ് രാജാവായ മാനുവൽ, പോപ്പ് ലിയോവിന് സമ്മാനമായി നൽകാൻ ഒരു ആനക്കുട്ടിയെ കേരളത്തിൽ നിന്നും കപ്പൽ കയറ്റി ലിസ്ബണിലേക്ക് അയക്കുന്നു. ആന പാപ്പാനായി ചീരനും കപ്പൽ യാത്രയിലുണ്ട്. ചീരൻ പക്ഷെ വെറും ഒരു പാപ്പാൻ അല്ല, സാമൂതിരി രാജാവിന് പറങ്കികളോടുള്ള പക തീർക്കാൻ മനുവലിനെ കൊല്ലാൻ പോകുന്ന ചാവേറും ആണ് അയാൾ.

ഈ സെറ്റപ്പിൽ നിന്ന് കഥ വേറെ പല ദിക്കിലേക്കും സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ അടിമവേല, പോപ്പ് ആകാനുള്ള മേടിച്ചി കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ വാശി, റോമിനെ സ്വാധീനിക്കാൻ രാജ്യങ്ങൾ തമ്മിൽ ഉള്ള മത്സരം, മൈക്കലാഞ്ചിലോ, ഡാ വിൻസി, റഫായേൽ എന്നിവരുടെ സ്വാധീനം, അങ്ങനെ പല ഉപകഥകളെ കോർത്തിണക്കുന്നുണ്ട് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ. ലിസ്ബണിലും, റോമിലും കേശവൻ നാട്ടുകാരുടെ പ്രിയങ്കരനാകുന്നു, ആനേ എന്നുള്ള ചീരന്റെ നീട്ടിയുള്ള വിളി പോര്ടുഗീസുകാർക്കു ആനോ ആയി മാറുന്നു. ചീരൻ ആണെങ്കിൽ രാജാവിനെ കൊല്ലാൻ ഒരു അവസരം കാത്തു നിൽക്കുന്നു. ആനക്ക് എന്ത് സംഭവിക്കുന്നു, ചീരൻ തന്റെ ദൗത്യം നിറവേറ്റിയോ എന്നുള്ള കാര്യങ്ങളാണ് കഥയുടെ ബാക്കി പകുതി.

ഇന്ദുഗോപൻ പൊതുവിൽ ഒരു rough, unpolished എഴുത്തുകാരനാണെന്നു തോന്നിയിട്ടുണ്ട്, ആ എഴുത്തു രീതി ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിലും കാണാൻ കഴിയും. എന്നിരുന്നാലും നല്ല imaginative ആയി എഴുതിയ രചനയാണ്‌ ഇത്.

We often say that history should be learned as a story- this is the perfect example of that.

I can’t think of a single subject I didn’t get to experience through this novel.
It’s a rare kind of Malayalam book, brilliantly plotted from Kochi and Calicut to Africa, Portugal, Spain, and the Vatican.

മനുഷ്യന്റെ ആഗ്രഹപൂർത്തീകരണത്തിനായി ഏതൊരു ജീവിയെയും അവന്റെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തെ ഹനിക്കുമ്പോൾ, അടക്കിവളർത്തുമ്പോൾ തന്നെ നമ്മൾ ക്രൂരന്മാരായ മൃഗമായി മാറുന്നു. പിന്നെ രാഷ്ട്രീയലാഭത്തിനായി ബലി കൊടുക്കൽ കൂടി കാണുമ്പോൾ വികാരനിർഭരമാവുന്നു. ആനോയുടെ അവസാന കാലഘട്ടം നമ്മുടെ കണ്ണുകളെ ഈറനണിയിക്കും തീർച്ച. എഴുതിചേർക്കപ്പെടാൻ പോലും പരിഗണിക്കാതെ പോയ കേശവൻ. സ്വന്തം കുഞ്ഞിനെന്നപോലെ നിഴലായി മാറിയ ചീരൻ. രണ്ടുപേരും ഒരേപോലെ അനാഥരാണ്.

എന്റെ ചെറിയ വായനയിൽ ഇത്രയും റെഫറൻസുകൾ നടത്തി തയ്യാറാക്കിയ ഒരു മലയാള നോവൽ ആദ്യമാണ്. ചിലപ്പോൾ മറ്റു നോവലുകളിലും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നിരിക്കാം. എന്നാൽ ആനോ വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഞാൻ ചരിത്രത്തിലൂടെ വായിക്കുന്നതായിട്ടു അനുഭവിച്ചു.

It was a slow read at the beginning. I wasn't sure if I would complete it. Then the flow became faster and faster and I couldn't stop. This is a beautiful story. Of mankind, of the struggles and of the financial interests and power struggles. Made me think, sad and silent for a while.

കേശവൻ എന്ന ആൽബിനോ ആനക്കുട്ടിയുടെ കൊച്ചിയിൽ നിന്ന് ലിസ്ബണിലേക്കും തുടർന്ന് റോമിലേക്കും ഉള്ള യാത്രയാണ് ജി. ആർ. ഇന്ദുഗോപന്റെ ആനോ എന്ന നോവൽ. പോപ്പിനുള്ള പോർച്ചുഗലിന്റെ (മാനുവൽ ഒന്നാമൻ ) സമ്മാനമാണ് കേശവൻ (ജൂലിയസ് രണ്ടാമനായ് കരുതിയതും ലിയോ പത്താമന് സമ്മാനിച്ചതും). ആനപാപ്പാൻ ചേരന്റെ യാത്ര പക്ഷെ മറ്റൊരു ദൗത്യവുമായാണ്! യാത്രയിൽ, അവർ കപ്പലുകളിലും തുറമുഖങ്ങളിലും കൊട്ടാരങ്ങളിലും എല്ലാം അറിഞ്ഞോ അറിയാതെയോ പല കൂട്ടുകെട്ടുകളിലും പെടുന്നു. ചില സാഹസങ്ങളുടെയും ഗൂഢാലോചനകളുടെയും ഭാഗമാകുന്നു. കഥാസസന്ദർഭങ്ങളിൽ പതിനാറാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തിലെ നിരവധി ചരിത്ര വ്യക്തികൾ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. ചിലർ ഇതിവൃത്തത്തിൽ പ്രധാന പങ്ക് വഹിക്കുന്നുമുണ്ട് (രാജാവിന്റെയും പോപ്പിനെയും ഉപദേശകരും ഉദ്യോഗസ്‌ഥരും, പോർച്ചുഗീസ് പര്യവേക്ഷകർ, നവോത്ഥാന കലാകാരന്മാർ, മെഡിച്ചി കുടുംബം, ലിസ്ബണിലെ മലയാളി നയതന്ത്രജ്ഞരും കച്ചവടക്കാരും, ജെസ്വിറ്റ് പുരോഹിതർ എന്നിങ്ങനെ).

ചരിത്രവും ഫിക്ഷനും കലർത്തിയുള്ള ആഖ്യാനത്തിൽ ആവേഗവും ആവേശവും നിറച്ച് രസിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട് ആനോ. അടിമത്തം (മനുഷ്യരും മൃഗങ്ങളും), കടൽയാത്രകളും കൊളോണിയൽ അധിനിവേശങ്ങളും അടങ്ങിയ പതിനാറാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ഭൂരാഷ്ട്രീയം, ജാതി/വംശം/ലിംഗ അടിച്ചമർത്തലും പ്രതിരോധങ്ങളും , സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യവും വ്യക്തിവാദവും, മുതലാളിത്തം, മാറിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ലോകക്രമം തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രമേയങ്ങൾ നോവലിലേക്ക് നെയ്തുചേർക്കുന്നു ജി ആർ ഇന്ദുഗോപൻ. എന്നിരുന്നാലും, രചയിതാവിന്റെ സംഭാഷണാധിഷ്ഠിതമായ കഥപറച്ചിൽ, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മറ്റ് കൃതികളിലെന്നപോലെ, മടുപ്പിക്കുന്നതാണ്. പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും മുൻകാല സംഭവങ്ങൾ വിവരിക്കാനും (ഏതാണ്ട് ഒരു ചരിത്രപാഠം പോലെ!) പ്രത്യയശാസ്ത്ര/ആശയപരമായ നിലപാടുകൾ അവതരിപ്പിക്കാനും ഇത് ഉപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോൾ, ആഖ്യാനം കഥയിൽ നിന്ന് തെന്നിമാറി വെറും വാചാടോപമായി മാറുന്നുണ്ട് എന്ന് തോന്നി!

G. R. Indugopan’s Aano traces the journey of Keshavan, an albino elephant cub, from Kochi to Lisbon and then on to Rome. Keshavan is Portugal’s (Manual I) tribute to the Pope (intended for Julius II, presented to Leo X). Cheeran, his mahout is on his own mission though! Along the journey, they encounter allyship, adventure and intrigue in ships, ports, and palaces. Many historical figures from early 16th century make an appearance, and a few play pivotal roles in the plot (king’s and papal offices, Portuguese explorers, Renaissance artists, the Medicis, Malayali diplomats and Jesuits in Lisbon, etc.).

Well-paced and packed with thrills, Aano balances the mix of fact and fiction well enough to keep up the reader’s interest to some extent. G.R. Indugopan manages to weave various themes into the story-animal captivity, human slavery, seafaring and colonial expansion, 16th century geopolitics, caste/race/gender oppression and resistance, freedom and individualism, capitalism and the changing world order, etc. However, the author’s dialogue-oriented story telling remains as wearisome as in his other works. This narrative style feels highhanded in Aano, especially when it is employed to recount past events (almost like a history lesson!) and to present ideological/conceptual positions, rendering the narration into a staccato rhetoric!
