A decade later and I’m instantly reminded of the teenage crush I never quite got over. But neither one of us can act on our growing feelings once he hires me to find his brother. I won’t stop until I help him uncover the truth. Not when I have the chance to reunite a family instead of breaking one. Even if it means revealing secrets that could destroy us. Award-winning author LJ Evans lives in Northern California with her husband, child, and the three terrors called cats. She's written compulsively since she was a little girl, often getting derailed from what she should be doing by a song lyric that sends her scrambling to jot a scene down.
A former first-grade teacher, she now spends her days deep in the pages of romance and mystery with a bit of the otherworldly thrown in. Her favorite characters are those who live resiliently—stubbornly and triumphantly getting through this wild ride called life with hope, love, and found families guiding the way.
Her novels have won multiple industry awards, including CHARMING AND THE CHERRY BLOSSOM which was Writer’s Digest’s Self-Published E-book Romance of the Year.
After All the Wreckage is a stand alone romantic suspense by L.J. Evans. I just this minute finished this book and am speechless. I feel like every book I read of L.J.’s is better then the one before and this one is no exception. I was riveted from the first page until the last. I’m going to give you a little bit of background information on these two but this is one of those books you just need to experience. That no words will ever do it justice!
Gage Palmer is twenty seven years old. He had a dream once upon a time of being a storm chaser. But then he needed to return home to Cherry Bay to assume guardianship of his much younger brother and sister. Now he is a full time parent while at the same time, running their family’s bar, The Prince Darian Tavern. On top of it all, he is trying to help his younger siblings navigate “abilities” they have inherited from their mother. His life is both full in a way he never imagined because he would never give up the relationship he has with his siblings, but also it is lonely and stressful, trying to make ends meet and navigate a world he never thought he’d be forced to. Then, when “she” walked into his bar one evening, his world was once again turned upside down.
Rory Bishop is twenty two years old. Rory is trying to finish college and trying to run her mother’s Private Investigation business. Her life is focused on survival, trying to get through each day the best she can.
Rory and Gage first met when she was twelve and he was seventeen. Her crush on him was instant and has never waned. But, it’s been seven years since they have seen each other. Now they are adults and those five years don’t matter. As soon as they come face to face the night she went into his bar, as soon as they touch, lightening strikes. There is a magnetic pull between them that is inexplicable. But their lives are in such states that neither of them can make that first move. But, when Gage’s younger brother goes missing, Rory is the only one he trusts that he can go to for help. And as each day passes, their bond grows stronger.
As Rory and Gage try to unravel the missing pieces to the puzzle, it becomes more and more evident that both of their cases are entangled. And every time they reveal a secret, the danger becomes stronger. They are both torn between keeping their loved ones safe and also finally knowing the truth. How far are they willing to go to find the answers they need and where will it leave the two of them when it’s all over?
This book held me prisoner from the beginning to the end. The epilogues were perfect and left me so happy. I can’t say enough how amazing this book is and hope that you will fall in love just as I did.
“In a world that loves its villains, be the hero.”
This was yet another stunning story from LJ Evans. Not only did this book make me happy and satisfied in all the ways, but it also grabbed ahold of my heart & soul. I finished this days ago and I’m still thinking about it.
Ms. Evans’ storytelling skills are top notch, her words poetic. Sometimes they were the simplest of words, but with the deepest of meanings that packed a punch. Words full of the strongest of feelings, with the power to bring you to your knees.
Rory…wow…I must say I have a bit of a girl crush. She is one of those female characters who is smart and strong and completely badass. And I kinda want to hang out with her and be her best friend.
You know those book boyfriends who are absolutely perfect? Protective and thoughtful and sweet & swoony and responsible and caring and sexy AF…Gage was all of that and more. The connection between Rory and him was so strong, their chemistry electric. The sexual tension was delicious and it made me tingle with anticipation. I loved these two together so much.
To watch Rory & Gage re-connect after years apart and to see their bond gradually get stronger was absolutely delightful. Their relationship got stronger, their love more powerful and passionate, and that only made my adoration for them grow bigger.
This was such an extraordinary story, keeping me on the edge of my seat the majority of the time and filling me with so much awe and love through all of it.
This gorgeous story left me with a heart that was put through the wringer. LORDY. I cried, I smiled, I swooned, I gripped my kindle a little bit harder during a few scenes. And I. Felt. Everything. Heart-breaking, heart-stopping, heart-warming…this book did ALL THE THINGS to my heart, so be warned. But most of all, it captured it and fill it with love and hope and pleasure and pure joy and contentment.
Outstanding is too mild of a word to describe this book. I have loved every single thing I’ve read by this super-talented author and this one was no different. LJ Evans always delivers and she delivered this one beautifully and perfectly.
If you love single dad romances with plenty of suspense and characters who will make you fall in love with them, I can’t recommend this one enough.
LJ Evans has a powerful way to get me immersed in her stories and this book was no exception. Rory and Gage just kept me hooked to the story from the very first page to the last line. This small town second chance romantic suspense is full of twists and turns. It is made of millions tiny puzzle pieces those come together in front of your eyes in a cunning way. You won't be able to stop because you have to know what is going to happen in next chapter.I didn't dare to breathe or stop and blink an eye in the fear of In the fear of missing any important piece!
Expert PI Rory Bishop is back to the small town to run the investigation business previously run by her now comatose mother. She just came to know that it was not an accident . Her father is a big shot PI who has lots of power and money but she refuses to go to him for any help because they have an ugly history. She also refuses to sit still till she catches the murderers of her mother. Her path is crossed with Gage Clark. He was a childhood crush and it appears that Gage has some feelings for her. But the thing is that makes the situation even more complicated is his missing psychic mother, his siblings with special powers and one of the visions that put everyone in danger including Rory. Is this is their chance to make everything right together
I absolutely love Rory. I absolutely love to read about bada&& female characters and Rory is the baddest of them all. She is kind of the Black Widow if you have seen the Avengers. I think she is dealing with a lot of overwhelming grief , a lot of drama in professional life, lot of pain from fractured relationships,a lot of emotional baggage and even through all of this hardness, her brilliance shines! She is a brilliant hacker, has a great intuition, has a fierce determination to fight for justice and above all a big compassionate heart. She wants to help the kids even when she knows she doesn't have the time on money or the resources to do so because she has bigger fish to fry but she cannot step backward when someone is in trouble. But this is very convoluted plot where you see Gage and Rory's lives intersecting with each other and exploding with each other. It is a beautiful montage of action, suspense, mystery, power plays, mind games and with a biy of supernatural twist with the special abilities of Gage's mother. You will be completely mesmerised from beginning to the end. Gage is an alpha hero but the thing is that it's difficult to be an alpha with Rory because she loves to take control, she needs to play with fire and then she needs to put herself in danger. Though it goes against Gage's protective and responsible personality, he was a perfect partner for Rory. They both had issues. Gage had a loton his plate too. He carries the burden of abandonment and taking care of some amazing kids & the family business..but I loved the way he stepped up, when needed, for Rory. She has the toughest personality but that doesn't mean she doesn't need someone to make her feel safe, make her feel cherished, make her feel protected and loved. Gage did that while at the same time giving her the independence and the respect. They are both broken but together, they make so much sense.
I think complex interpersonal relationships is a place where LJ Evans excels. This book is equally angsty and heartbreaking as it is fast paced and action packed and adrenaline filled. That is very difficult balance to achieve but she did it so well. The suspense enhances the chemistry and connection between Gage and Rory. It was slow burn and full of intense deep feels. This book has so many amazing things going at the same time, in a delicate yet perfectly balanced style.
This was an amazing standalone I highly recommend you pick up and devour! I wasn't sure where to put this story. It is a well-written thriller with romance and a parapsychology edge.
I love a great crime procedural from authors such as Toni Anderson, Lee Childs, Karin Slaughter, etc. The novel provides this along with a romantic storyline where the chemistry leaps off the page.
Gage and Rory had big main character energy. Both sacrificing their wants and needs to make sure the family they have are safe. While the clues a slowly given the reader like a puzzle, the pieces all lock into place at the end.
If you are like me and enjoy mystery/thrillers but wish for that romantic edge- something different and not so technical, this is a story I recommend you put on your TBR and read ASAP!
This was an enjoyable, sometimes suspenseful read that had a steamy romance. I enjoyed it and thought Rory was Bad A**. She was everything I love about a MFC and she really made this story. I thought Gage was lovely and dreamy. Thanks Rick for my eArc.
What a fantastic read! A stand alone romantic suspense story that hooked me and did not let go. Days later, I am still thinking about the book, and I know my words are not going to be up to par with Ms. Evans. This is one of those go in blind and discover it all.
Rory and Gage have a past, but we get to know them now. They are both navigating what life has handed them, along with the challenges that go hand in hand. As she walks into his bar and back into his life. But when Gage’s brother has gone missing, and Rory is the only one he trusts.
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
Romantic suspense at its absolute finest. I applaud LJ Evans for bringing us such heart pounding story lines with so many amazing layers. Rory and Gage's story was a thrill ride and yet the sweetest romance, beginning when they were kids and the air pulsed between them with every glance. They had so much chemistry that when one was even talking about the other you felt the need and longing. The new single dad was the other half of Rory's broken soul, and when they finally give in you totally see the lightning they create
Still hungover from this amazing story and now looking for where I can stream Veronica Mars. So much more than five stars.
Quote:📖 “Dad was right about one thing. I’d die before I let anyone get away with this.”
Thoughts: 💡 This was an extremely well written fun story with a ton of angst. The FMC is in a hard position from the start but she perseveres by channeling strength from her favorite TV show/ role model Veronica Mars and her drive for answers. She’s a PI that totally exudes the vibes of a strong, independent and smart badass. The sweet angst ridden pinning between Rory and Gage was off the charts. (The on page descriptive smut scene doesn’t really happen until the very end, so if you’re one of those people that doesn’t like it (🤯) it’s pretty easy to skip.)

Not entirely despicable. I’ve never watched Veronica Mars but the sheer number of times it’s mentioned makes me feel like they are trying to emulate the vibe of the show and not relying on the vibe of the writing. It felt cheap.
This was my second book by LJ Evans. The writing was just as good as the first, but this one add unexpected twists, turns and lots of references to my favorite teenage tv show. As a HUGE fan of the Veronica Mars tv show, this book spoke to me on so many levels. The FMC has many parallels to Veronica while being unique and bad a** in her own way.
I LOVED this book! I was on the edge of my seat while smiling through tears. LJ wrote an absolute gem of a romantic suspense with this one. Rory & Gage are the perfect match. They were both strong, intelligent, & forced to be extremely strong & self reliable due to unfortunate tragedies. Each of their storyline’s brought all the family drama that forged a shared path back into each other’s lives. They were both trying to be strong & fight to provide the best life for their families. All the while, they didn’t realize they would be stronger together if they just stopped fighting their feelings for each other. I loved the paranormal & political elements LJ included in the plot!
Rory was the ultimate heroine. She was a loyal caretaker which I resonated with. She had no fear & always got the job done, no matter what risks were presented. My heart broke for her in regards to her Mom & her Dad.
Gage was so admirable for stepping up to the plate & taking responsibility for his younger siblings. I was rooting for him to live the life he deserved. He was so loving & protective of his small circle.
✨Age Gap ✨Paranormal Elements ✨Single “Dad” ✨Friends to Lovers ✨Veronica Mars References ✨HEA ✨Dual POV
“Veronica Mars had taught me a truth. When tragedy tore through your life like a catastrophic storm, leaving nothing but destruction, you could deny the wreckage existed or you could stand up & find a way to rebuild.”
Thank you to Rick & LJ Evans! I look forward to reading more from LJ.
With a butt-kicking heroine and a man who isn’t afraid to let a woman take charge, this book is an homage to Veronica Mars and hits on age-gap, second chance, friends to lovers, and small town tropes, with a little bit of paranormal thrown in the mix.
From the first line, “If panic attacks could have babies, I’d be having quintuplets”, this romantic suspense novel had my complete attention. The story follows Rory, a private detective following in her parents’ footsteps and Gage, the slightly older boy who she crushed on as a young teen. Years later, both of them have lived through tragedies and trials but still feel broken. When Gage’s brother goes missing, he knows he needs to reach out to the girl he’d been avoiding for years for help. What she unravels as she searches is so much bigger than they imagined.
I love this story and the emotion filled journey that Rory and Gage undergo while dodging shady characters, trying to figure out what is going on, and keeping those involved safe. Gage is a loving man who set aside his dreams to keep his family together. Rory has passion and drive, but feels alone. Together they are so much stronger. This story is a standalone with a HEA (be sure not to miss the bonus epilogue) and is “not completely despicable” (iykyk)! A must read for VM fans, romantic suspense junkies, those who enjoy a strong character, and fans of a well-written love story.
One of the many things L.J. has mastered is the mystery woven into her love stories. Always keeping you on your toes and wanting to turn the pages to get to the end. Rory being a private investigator was just like watching a Veronica Mars episode and it was fun to relive the days I was obsessed with that show! Gage being a father to his younger siblings as his Dad passes and his mom is off the grid was so beautiful to see. I Love this love story, there's so much going on and so many players involved but the writing was so perfect I was never overwhelmed or lost. This book is so worth the read!
ARC Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ NOW AVAILABLE!! It was mid… I feel like it had the potential to be really great but something about just fell flat for me and it didn’t keep my attention well. Towards the end I found myself skimming the chapters just to be done.
Intensely suspenseful and Heart-stoppingly Beautiful
I will never get over the way LJ Evans uses such beautiful and magical language to create such stunning pictures of characters, relationships, and events. And she paints such an incredibly vivid story of the roles fate and destiny play in bringing Rory and Gage together and to life in After All the Wreckage.
Evans elevates the solid elements of her romantic suspense with heart-wrenching intensity, increasing the connections between her characters and her readers. Weaving in a hint of the paranormal only ups the ante in the plot, creating a sense of intrigue that delves beyond the mere facts into layers of trust, belief, and reliability. And as those layers are built into the story, they’re built into the relationships between the characters as well.
It is impossible not to feel connected to the characters. Evans lays their souls bare, puts them through unimaginable circumstances, and brings them through it together to a truly beautiful HEA. Gage and Rory are each fiercely independent, used to relying on themselves for everything, but together they’re a force to be reckoned with, their chemistry off the charts.
And it’s so much more than just the connection between Rory and Gage. It’s the already solid and deep bond between Gage and his siblings, in addition to the found family surrounding him, that pulls on every heartstring, creates the catalyst for the story, and reveals just how intense and life-altering love can be.
Evans integrates multiple storylines and threads pulling Rory and Gage closer and closer, culminating in a stunning resolution encompassing multiple elements of their lives separately and together. After All the Wreckage is a true standalone novel set in her fictitious town of Cherry Bay. If you’ve read other books set there, you’ll love the little connections she builds in, and if you haven’t, you might find the allure of Cherry Bay too hard to resist and seek out her backlist books set there as well.
A masterful storyline that gut punches you as soon as it opens. LJ brings a remarkable story of stranded characters. Stranded and frozen in time because their lives are held hostage by the circumstances they're stuck in, loved ones struggling everyday and them holding the onus and guilt of it all
"How could I not fall for someone who saw me in that light? Who saw through the broken parts to the person I most wanted to be?"

I love suspense mystery, and this story had me hooked by the first chapter.
Gage Palmer has had to give up on his dreams to care for his siblings after his father dies and his mother takes off.
He doesn't regret taking over the family bar that has been in his family for generations, and he definitely doesn't regret taking care of his siblings. They are his world. He doesn't want them to get hurt by losing someone they love if he can help it.
When Rory Bishop walks into his bar, he finds out that she is even more snarky and beautiful than her teenage self.
She's following in her parents' footsteps and living the life of her favorite TV show idol.
When Gage's brother goes missing, he asks Rory for help, but they soon find that their lives are intertwined and must help each other to find out why her mother is laying unconscious in a bed and why his brother's vision seems to be tied up in it.
This is such a well written and well thought out story with great characters that have you rooting for two people whose lives you want to see intertwined, even after all the wreckage.
This was the first book by this author that I’ve read. It’s brilliant! This one’s a page turner from start to finish. We know in the end Rory Bishop and Gage Palmer will survive the daunting challenge of discovering who tried to kill her mother and where his mother Demi is. Will they be able to save Demi’s life? Will Rory’s mother remain on life support or suddenly, miraculously awaken from her yearlong coma, or will Rory finally accept the seemingly inevitable and follow everyone’s advice and pull the plug and let her mother drift away? Will Rory and Gage be able to bring the powerful criminal cabal responsible for so much death to justice? Is Rory’s father involved? And just as importantly, after all the wreckage, will Rory find her H.E.A. with her childhood crush or are their lives to desperate, their futures on two so different paths to blend together? The author is a talented word smith who can make the description of the wall of a simple building interesting while writing a passionate romance-mystery with so many twists and turns it will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page and leave you wanting more.
After All the Wreckage is a heartfelt and emotional romance story with a touch of mystery. The book follows Rory, a private investigator who returns to her small hometown to take care of her sick mom. There, she reconnects with Gage, a man she once had a crush on. Gage is now raising his younger siblings and running the family bar.
When one of Gage’s brothers goes missing, Rory offers to help. As they search for clues, Rory and Gage get closer and start to fall for each other. But both of them have painful pasts, and they have to learn how to trust again.
The story is full of emotion, sweet moments, and just enough suspense to keep you turning the pages. The characters feel real, and the family dynamics add depth to the story. Gage’s siblings even have a bit of a supernatural gift, which gives the book a unique twist.
This book is great for readers who enjoy second-chance romances, small-town settings, and stories about healing and love. It’s touching, romantic, and hopeful — a story about finding love even after everything seems broken.
First of all, know that I adore Rory & Gage & their family! And, while I enjoyed the show Veronica Mars, there were things in the show that bugged me. Unfortunately, some of those themes made their way into this story, reminding me why they bugged me.
For true Mars-mallows, those themes will most likely make you love this story MORE, so kudos to that! 😉
Aside from that, I enjoyed this story a lot. Rory is a spitfire, but as Gage points out, one with the marshmallow center. Her heart is so full of love even when she tries to hide it behind snark. And Gage - whew! He's a caretaker & his love for his siblings is astronomical. He discovers, or rediscovers, a love for Demi, too, which made me happy.
I love how Gage & Rory's history is shown. The story & mystery are well-plotted and wonderfully written! Watching their love grow & them work together was fun & enjoyable, too.
And their love story is better than Veronica & Logan. There. I said it.
After All the Wreckage is a beautifully written slow-burn, suspenseful romance that begins when Rory is just a preteen and first meets Gage, who is five years her senior. Even at that young age, there was a spark—an unexplainable connection that neither could fully comprehend.
Both Rory and Gage had years of growing up to do before fate would bring them back together as adults. And each time their paths crossed, the undeniable bond between them only grew stronger. Was it fate, luck, or the universe reminding them that they were meant to be? Those around them saw the connection from the start but allowed it the time and space to blossom naturally.
LJ Evans masterfully weaves a story of love, resilience, and destiny, making After All the Wreckage a compelling read for fans of deep, emotional romances.
This an enjoyable romantic suspense, slight age gap (5 years), single dad/guardian of siblings, unrequited crush romance read with some paranormal vibes. It was well written with an interesting plot that had some twists and turns and likable and relatable characters. One of my few complaints would be the beginning angst with neither Rory nor Gage wanting to let anyone else in and wanting to keep walls in place. It became a bit repetitive as did the Veronica Mars references. This wasn’t a deal breaker in terms of my enjoyment but the repetition and push and pull were noticeable. The nonstop action kept things interesting and the spice was pretty tastefully done. Overall this was a solid and enjoyable read with an emotional and satisfying HEA.
Why aren’t more people talking about this book?! LJ Evans is the epitome of a storyteller weaving such an intricate and fascinating web of details into every corner of this story.
The imagery is romantic and heartbreaking, it’s dangerous and absolutely stunning. I was so taken with Gage and Rory’s connection - with that indescribable pull they have between them that can’t be ignored.
The relationships are real and raw and I savored every word. I truly cannot say enough good things about this book - the twists and turns will have you on the edge of your seat and gah! It’s definitely one of my favorite LJ Evans books!! Absolutely a must read!
Grab yourself some snacks, something to drink, and find yourself a comfy chair. You are not going to want to put this one down. Once again LJ Evans has crafted a story that wraps itself around my soul like a warm blanket. All the themes of love, loss, grief, betrayal and redemption are here. The suspense is first class, and the plot twists will catch you by surprise. Rory and Gage have a story for the ages, and I was rooting for them from the first chapter. This book was like a beautiful vacation that I never wanted to end. Turn your phones off, and spend a day in this wonderful world that LJ has created. 5 stars!!!
