From the first time the underage stripper meets the dangerous Mafia boss during a raid on his infamous San Franciscan Gentlemen’s Club, Coco Stevens is hypnotized by the young charismatic Don. Like a doomed moth drawn helplessly toward an enticing yet lethal flame, Sam Spielman also falls helplessly under her spell. The two could not be more different – and more alike – and more in love. Guided by Sam’s clever mentoring, Coco begins her meteoric rise to the very pinnacle of the international fashion trade. She proves to be as wily and intelligent as she is beautiful as she swiftly adapts to the jet setting world of haute couture. She segues her supermodel status into a blossoming acting career, remaining glued to the fast track of a world of power and privilege. For the better part of a decade, Coco balances life on the edge of a deadly and enticing razor. It’s a dangerous game with its own set of nasty rules. Although she plays it with a master’s touch, Coco knows full well that one mistake could cost her everything. Then the unthinkable happens. From the exotic African svelte lands of Kenya to the breathtakingly beautiful sands of Barbados, Coco rides the golden bullet, hanging on for dear life until finally and inevitably, the gold begins to tarnish. In the end, Sam Spielman is forced to choose between the unthinkable and the impossible. Would he rather pay the ultimate price for the most grievous of this world’s sins, or go on living in the darkness of his own creation? Seemingly trapped with a one way ticket on the voyage of the damned, can Coco and Sam find the only way out? Coco finally reaches for redemption in the barren deserts of Nevada. Hanging in the balance is a modern day fortune which rivals the worth of King Solomon’s Mines. In a riveting conclusion with a surprising twist, perhaps the wages of sin can be spent more wisely than even they would have believed possible.
P.S. Meronek is truly one of a kind. He's a writer, entrepreneur, world traveler, and adventurer. His life experiences are reflected in the characters and stories he pens; he's spent the last 30 years developing his voice and unique style of writing. He doesn't live a whole lot differently than some of the more notable characters in his books. He admits it has been a road less traveled, but worth every step along the way.
I won this book in a First Reads Giveaway and immediately read right through it. I thought the story line was interesting, however, most of the characters are predictable and not quite believable. Mr. Meronek also has a habit of interrupting the flow of the novel by having his characters pontificate on issues that have nothing to do with the plot, such as family values, politics, wildlife conservation, etc. I found myself putting the book down frequently and walking away until I was ready to slog through the sermon and get back to the meat of the story.
There was a good plot twist at the end that made the effort worthwhile, but please, Mr. Meronek, stick with your mystery/romance unless you're writing an essay about current events.
People who appreciate Meronek's books clearly know something others don't. Of course he looks fairly well pressed for a 76yr old gentile... That is... if you think an enlightened sense of style includes a polyester lavender/sandalwood suit, with well heeled shoes made from fascists child's fur. Allow me to divulge further, while his books could legitimately be the flavour of the month, appearances can also be deceiving because his sense of fashion is mostly an acquired one. And yes, if you are wondering, I am the main character of this book, Coco Stevens. Unfortunately, he could not relinquish the royalty required (80% profit) to use my name, because I am, Bruce Veloor.
I read Stay Another Night by P.S. Meronek and I can’t say with sincerity that I loved the book. I wanted to like it mostly because it had such an interesting cover, but you know how the old adage goes…….The book follows several different story lines but focuses on our heroine, Coco Stevens and her supposed better half, Sam Spielman, who just happens to be a Mafia boss. The story switches back and forth between past and present and that tends to get a little distracting at times. Coco is such an unbelievable character to me. There is nothing about her that I can identify with at all. Of course this is not a requirement for me in order to enjoy a novel but I would like for the characters in the book to feel something akin to a real person. I almost felt like this was a character designed by a male author in order to express his fantasy image of the perfect woman. Coco’s rags-to-riches story is just a bit too convenient. Her life is too neat and tidy. I also feel that the book should have ended sooner than it did. It was too long and I think that fact had to do with the great number of details employed by the author. All the details did nothing to advance the story but did manage to bog down the plot instead. I often found my mind going to other places while reading the book, probably because I found a lot of it very boring and it made it hard for me to concentrate on. I’m sorry if this is a negative review, I just don’t think that this is my kind of book. It may appeal to others much more than it did to me.
Stay Another Night By: P.S. Meronek Publisher: Ponytale Press Pages. 411 Reviewed by: tk Copy Courtesy of: Goodreads First Reads
Thrilling mystery with a rags to riches romance. Guaranteed to keep you up all night.
Seventeen year old Coco Stevens is not at all happy. She runs away to an unforeseen future. Starting out as dancer at "Dante's Gentlemans Club" Coco thinks she's doing all right for herself. Unfortunate, a sting operation closes the club temporarily, and Coco loses her job. She has no other choice, but to return home, and start life over again. A new beginning for Coco is soon to arrive in a limo. Her ex-boss Sam, would like to see her. An amazing adventure is starting. Coco will become rich, secure, confident and travel the world. She will also suffer loneliness, betrayal, and plot her revenge against the love of her life.
An absolute fascinating story. It takes you from the heartfelt despair to wanting to be Coco Stevens. It will take you through a full array of emotions...love and hating the characters in turn. You will have no other choice than to keep turning the pages to find where the story will go next. Highly recommended 5/5
I remember about 3/4 of the way through I was thinking to myself that I was totally engrossed in the story. It was fascinating to me. I loved the way Coco thought and acted. One of my favorite things was her relationship with Jack. I found myself wishing that I had a "Jack" in my life :)
I don't understand why some people think Coco was too perfect. I know people like her. Always in the right place at the right time, and smart enough to grab the opportunity when it arises and avoid the bad stuff when necessary. Everything they touch turns to gold. I am not one of them but I don't begrudge them their luck/fate; which is helped along by their hard work and great attitudes. I think that people should be more like her as far as her altruism, friendship and forgiving nature are concerned. Her rise to stardom was not surprising to me in the least. Happens like that all the time. The difference for most is that after their "15 minutes" they don't have the talent or the wherewithal to parlay it into a solid career. It's a tough life and not everyone is capable of hanging on through the rough stuff. Some of them make it look easy though, so you know it's possible. Nobody ever thinks about what the actors are doing when they are not involved in those big budget movies or when their popular TV series ends. I can't imagine it's easy with so much competition.
I don't consider the age difference an issue. Love is love. I loved the story with Claire. I would like one of her too :) Old people seem to be able to "read" people easily so I didn't find the rapid friendship and trust unrealistic. The common goal to do good and lack of other family made it even easier to understand. I'm sad to have not met the old guy though. He would have been a great addition. I was fond of him anyway. The couple taking care of the daughter were wonderful as well. It was a selfless act to take responsibility for all of that for Claire. Seemed the only logical step to me. I loved the trip to Africa and the elephants and was happy to learn of their plight. What's wrong with all the elephant haters? It was a great way for her to meet the photographer and get her quickly into the limelight. Worked for me. The amazing coincidence of her becoming involved with Sam and Danny was a big stretch but not completely out of the realm of possibility so I could get behind it.
I like the writing style of this author. The back, forth and in between is done well. The only time I was distracted by it was the first time it was written that Sam killed her father. I'm not sure why. Could be it happened in the wrong time for me? Maybe that it was such a surprise because it was before Quinn told his story? Who knows? Didn't see that coming! I loved this story. It is smart and entertaining. I'm not exactly sure what the title is all about. I remember reading the words but don't recall why or if they were important enough to be considered worthy of the title (to me). No matter. The front cover is nice. I didn't read the synopsis on the back cover until I finished reading the book. A bit over dramatic compared to the story but I guess the purpose is to get people to read the book in the first place. "Sam's clever mentoring" (?), not in my version - or else I missed it. Jack was a big help in the beginning and stuck by her throughout. I liked Sam well enough but really wasn't too interested in him. This book was all about Coco for me and I loved her. I also liked the way the story ended and I'm glad she didn't have to go through with her plans. I don't think it would have been good for her and she would have been forever changed by it.
I must admit though that just as in "A Lifetime to Die" I felt the last part of the book was a bit rushed to get it wrapped up. I didn't read anything that I felt was out of place or unrelated (details) as some reviewers have mentioned. I find the extra information interesting and feel it adds to the overall story. Even though it did wrap up quickly I still enjoyed every minute of it. Am looking forward to his next book.
Recommended to everyone (17+ for some violence and sexual situations)
I received this book from the author/publisher after being selected in the Goodreads First Reads Giveaway as a winner. Thanks so much!
As with several books I’ve won through this program, this one was a disappointment. It was neither mystery nor thriller nor suspense, though it was listed under mystery in the giveaway section. The truth is I don’t know what to call it.
Coco Stevens, the main character, is almost too good to be true. She’s perfect, almost too perfect. She’s incredibly beautiful and amazingly smart, always kind and giving, lucky and full of integrity. And things come too easily to her. A photographer takes her picture and suddenly she’s the hottest model on the planet. That mushrooms into a successful acting career. Throughout the story, everything – modeling career, movie career, tons of money – comes to her at the drop of a hat with no setbacks. When she needs help, it’s there in the blink of an eye. When she needs information, it’s there with a click of the computer mouse.
Because of this, there was very little tension in the book until about 60 pages from the end. There was no real crime to be solved, there was minimal suspense and no thrills since Coco and others never had to put it all on the line to win or even survive. The story never really went anywhere. It starts at an amble, never breaks into more than a trot for 411 pages, then stops. And the characters don't really change.
Meronek shifts the story between past and present every few chapters. While he made it clear early in each chapter which it was, it would have been nice to have the chapters where he made those jumps flagged with some sort of heading to eliminate that momentary sense of ‘dislocation’ every time he did it. It would have especially helped in later chapters when he didn’t make the switch clear in the first sentence or two.
This book was rife with many punctuation, capitalization, word choice errors, and larger than normal spacings between paragraphs that made them seem more like scene breaks. Offsetting that is this was one of the highest quality paperbacks I’ve ever seen. It was solidly put together, had no misaligned pages, and was printed on a better grade of paper than usual in paperbacks.
I didn’t hate this book. It wasn’t that bad and with more tension and more action, it could have been damn good. But it wasn’t.
Stay Another Night is my second P.S. Meronek book to read. His writing style appeals to me in that he always keeps me guessing. If you want a book that is plain and follows only one story line his books are not for you. In Stay Another Night, Meronek follows the lives of two individual people. CoCo Stevens and Sam Spielman. CoCo is a model who hit the modeling world by storm when she was photographed with a herd of Elephants in Kenya during a vacation with Sam. Sam is a businessman who dabbles in many things, some of his businesses are mob related, some are strictly legitimate. CoCo and Sam are in a relationship but it isn't all warm and fuzzy. They both have busy lives and are independently wealthy, each in their own right. The story takes twists and turns and sometimes you love them and sometimes they are scary. The characters in the book are happy for the most part in the lives they have together even though they have chosen not to be married and sometimes do not even see each other for weeks at a time because of their work schedules. Money becomes a tool to get what they want. Things become tense when CoCo is shot while on vacation with Sam in Prague. The bullet was meant for Sam. She senses problems and tries to find her own solutions, but in the end her conclusions are wrong. I love the variations in the characters in his books and the ways the characters interact. It is not like A Lifetime to Die but there are some similarities. I had a harder time getting interested in this one, but after about fifty pages, I was hooked again. Waiting now to read the third one, The Joshua Effect.
I must be honest. I requested this book because there were 1000 books available, and I figured that I'd win one. As far as topics of a book go, I'm not interested in Vegas, Models/Actresses, or Africa. The only thing that called to me (besides the 1000 books available) was that the male lead was a mob boss. All that being said, I really enjoyed this book.
I loved the parts in Africa, Kenya specifically. The descriptions were so beautiful. They made me open to the idea of wanting to visit there one day. For someone who has NEVER had an interest in going there, I think that is pretty amazing writing.
Also surprisingly, the mob boss part of the story was minimal, and didn't really hold my interest. I was very drawn by the mystery that surrounds the plot. Typically, I don't like stories that jump around in time, as Stay Another Night did. But about 2/3 of the way through, I decided that there would have been no other way to tell this story.
Overall, I'd say this is a good book. I'd recommend it, probably would lean more towards a 'plane read' rather than anything else. I'm glad that I won and read it.
I won this book through Goodreads First Reads. My interest in entering for this book was because I had previously read author, P.S. Meronek's, book "The Joshua Effect" and really enjoyed it. "Stay Another Night" is usually a book I wouldn't read, but the small introduction of the book sounded good when it spoke of a Mafia Boss being one of the main character's. The book talks of a young, aspiring actress, named Coco, who makes her start as a stripper. She is very focused and headstrong in knowing what she wants and what she is looking for in life. She meets Sam Spielman, the elusive Mafia Boss, who controls everything he touches and invests in. He falls in love with Coco and will do anything to keep her safe and protected from his mysterious mob dealings. The book is well written and keeps you wondering what will happen next. Although this isn't the type of book I would read again, I would highly recommend it for any reader who enjoys a good mystery/love story!
I'd give this 4.5 stars if I could. I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and I'm glad I did because it was a very good book.
I enjoyed the back and forth style where the author would write in the present and then revert to something that happened in the past. I found Coco to be very likable, as was Sam. The writing, especially the parts in Kenya, was very descriptive.
Obviously parts of the story require that a person suspend belief in real life. For example, Coco happens upon the most ethical photographer ever who just happens to live with the most ethical agent in Hollywood. Not everyone can be a perfect person and if there was one drawback to this book, it would be that except for Sam, pretty much everyone was an angel. In my opinion, that just doesn't happen. We all know people that are less than perfect.
This is the story of Coco Stevens and Sam Spielman. Coco is a stripper in the Gentlemen’s Club owned by Sam (who is a Don in the Mafia) and they embark on a love affair that changes their lives. Coco soon becomes famous as a model then actress. But Sam has a secret and it has to do with Coco’s past; something she is unaware of.
As the story evolves Coco grows from a young teenage stripper, to world famous model to one who tries to beat her lover in his game. Coco is a strong woman and I appreciate that but I still didn’t relate to her and she didn’t seem believable. The secret that is the motivation of the story plays out in the last few pages and was a big letdown. Although, well written, the story had interesting segments but then it suffered with a substandard finale.
I won this book as a good reads giveaway. This is a highly entertaining story which immediately draws the reader's interest and holds it throughout the book. It would have been very easy for the author to make these characters clichéd, however, he makes them both likeable and believable. The author has a tendency to lecture in spots and I think it would do him well to trust the readers and let them use their own imagination at times instead of pointing out every last little detail. Overall, I recommend this book and I would read other works by Mr Meronek.
My friend, Barbara Woodford won this book in a giveaway from goodreads!
I really liked the way the author went from past to present throughout the book. I think the characters were well thought out and I enjoyed the plot. I would suggest this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with a little love on the side!!!
I get the pleasure of experiencing P. S. Meronek's mind in the new book, 'Stay Another Night, for free thanks to the good people and folks of Goodreads First Reads and of course the author. Looking forward to turning the page.
this was a good book. a few main characters make up the bulk of the book. the mob, love, riches and betrayal make up the themes. the author bring the characters to life and you feel lots of emotions associated with them. i like this author and will read more of his works.
I received a copy of this book from Goodreads: First Reads giveaway.
This was my first encounter with P.S Meronek as I have never even heard of him, much less read his work before this novel. I have to say that I have read better but I have read worse. The cover is what caught my eye and the reason that I clicked to enter the giveaway as it just looked like it would be a gritty, sleazy read which actually was not the case. Meronek writes smoothly and handles the flashback-heavy plot with ease. (It would have been nice to have a header each time the story went back and then snapped forward again. Just a simple "Then" or "Now" to ease the whiplash at times.)
This book had a much more lovey-dovey "Chick-Lit" feel than I expected as Coco just didn't seem to be able to do any wrong and she was massively adored and loved and liked by everyone. Coco was at times, a bit too perfect yet I enjoyed the escapades in which Coco found herself in and even as she came across as a living Barbie, I still liked her. Things that happened to her seemed outlandish and borderline fantasy but it made for a fun read that was pretty unpredictable. I still have a problem with Sam and the shady way that he was wrote. He was a bit confusing. He was suppose to be a mob-boss bad guy but for the most part, he never truly came across that way. He was unlikable for the most part and I enjoyed her interactions with Jack much more. I kinda think that ending was a cop-out so that Coco ended up with her perfect life and happy ending.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed it while it lasted. Meronak had a few editing issues and possibly printing errors as there were pages with odd spacing but nothing that distracted from the story too terribly much. I'm not hopping on Amazon to order every other book that he wrote, but I won't run away from any in the future if I happen upon them.
I won this book through Good Reads First Reads promotion and just received it today and can not wait to start reading it!!!
This book encompasses the whole of a relationship that at first looks destined to fail. Coco is a 17 year old girl who ran away from home with a fake ID and started stripping in a club owned by Sam. There she quickly grows into the incredible force of nature she is destined to be. She doesn't even meet Sam until the fateful night her career as a stripper is destined to end.
Coco is definitely a character. She thinks for herself and plans her own life. She's way smarter than anyone would ever guess especially with her looks. She decides what she is doing always on her own terms. At her core she is a loving and generous person who looks out for her friends and family and refuses to let the world change her.
Sam is a mystery. Both a mobster and a legitimate business man he hides many secrets. Especially from Coco as he wants to keep her safe and untainted by his darker dealings. Coco is his world and gods help anyone who threatens her in the least! He is a man of his word. An old school man of honor that no one wishes to cross.
This book was an emotional rollercoaster ride of ups and downs ... It kept me guessing along with Coco up until the very end. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to any mystery fans out there who like a love story that is the central theme. I truly adored this book and will definitely be reading more by this amazing author! I love the way he paints an entire world so that you feel you are right there with the characters the whole time!
***This book is suitable for mature young adult through adult readers
This is the second book by P.S. Meronek I have won through the Goodreads first-reads giveaway. Although in the end I did not overall enjoy it as much as, “ A Lifetime to Die” I still enjoyed it enough to rate it 3.5-4 stars.
I'll be honest it took me a few chapters in to really start getting into the story of Coco, and by half way through I was completely hooked. Some readers do not prefer stories that go back and forth linking the present and the past; however, I actual enjoy it if it is done well. In this book, it was. Though it is not till later that the two intersect revealing really what the present story really is about and thus giving you better insight to Coco and her relationship with Sam. Still another thing as a few others have mentioned in their own reviews that I also noticed was some of the unnecessary extra details here and there throughout the book. Not that it necessarily dearly hurt the story, just found some of it in ways dragged down the story a bit and you find your skimming over those details to get back to the meat of the story.
In the end overall though, I found, “Stay Another Night” to be a well written, enjoyable read with a great plot twist, a good storyline with a mixture of romance, suspense, mystery and crime. Personally, I enjoyed the ending as well. I think P.S. Meronek writes exceptionally well and am sure read more of his books and enter other giveaways. *Received this book for free in exchange for an honest review, through Goodreads first-reads giveaway.*
Overall this was a pretty enjoyable book. The main character, Coco Stevens, narrates the story, and lives a pretty fantastic life. Her father is murdered when she is six leaving her alone with her mother. As she grows up circumstances arise which lead to her becoming a high end stripper followed by a supermodel, and then an actress. The story hoes back and forth across time, and it usually took me a page or to to figure out when I was reading about. There are many different plot lines going on concurrently, however, it all ties together nicely in the end.
I, personally, am a stickler for details, and one thing that bothered me a lot was the name of Coco's boyfriend. He is referred to as being full-blooded Sicilian, yet his name is Sam Spielman. An Italian name rather than a German-Jewish name would have been better.
Coco ends up swindling Sam out of a fortune when she winds up inheriting an oil field that he is trying to buy, but in the end the thing that Sam wants the most is her, and they end up getting married.
I received this book free from Goodreads in exchange for an honest review. This review is very late in coming. Mostly because I gave up and just did not finish reading the book . . . sigh. I'm not proud of that. The book started out interesting and I think it could have been an interesting plot, but it just became too boring for me. I picked it up many times, read for 15 min and sat it back down, bored to tears. Loved the main character, Coco, in the first chapter. After that, not so much. Again, it could have been great, but some aspects (the business, the politics, the looooong speeches) were just too much for me. I gave up halfway through and moved on to a different, more interesting book. I am grateful for the free book to read but I value my time too much to be bored, life is short.
Full disclosure: I was chosen a First Reads winner, and received a paperback copy of Stay Another Night in the mail. That in no way influenced the review that follows.
This is an intriguing storyline, with several memorable (albeit somewhat predictable) characters and a few diverse settings. I enjoyed it and am glad to have read it.
My one criticism is that telling the story on more than one timeline didn't make it a stronger story for me. Now that I've finished reading it, I'd almost like to go back, put the chapters in chronological order, and reread them that way. Sometimes I think this technique works fine; I can't put my finger on exactly why I didn't feel that way with this particular book.
I particularly enjoyed the parts of the book that were set in Kenya.
Thanks for the opportunity to read Stay Another Night.
I won this book thru a Goodreads Giveaway. I love a good mystery/suspense book so I was eager to jump into this one. It had a decent plot, and I thought it was well thought-out and well-written. That being said, I had difficulty with the main character, Coco Stevens. She just didn't read "real" to me. It gave me a glimpse into a lifestyle very removed from mine. I found parts of it hard to put down, then the book would bog down in details. I'd put it down for a few days and them come back to it. That's not my usual style. I usually devour a book. I will say that the plot twist at the end was a great one! It caught me by surprise, and had me reading uninterrupted through the end. I think P.S. Meronek, overall, has a great writing style.
I received a free paperback copy of Stay Another Night by P.S. Meronek in a goodreads giveaway.
I wanted to like this book but could not suspend the illusion of disbelief. I could not imagine all these high dollar career changes for Coco Chanel who started at seventeen as an underage stripper. She met Sam Spielman, a mobster & sparks flew. It was a slow read & I didn't like any of the characters except Jack, Sam's bodyguard & right hand man who called Coco Baby Girl.
I won this in a GR First Reads giveaway. Most of the books I've won here have been pretty darn good, some better than others..........this, however, is not one of those. I didn't care for the writing style, the main character was apparently perfection, but boring, IMHO, characters would go on unrelated diatribes, those are a few of the things, off the top of my head, that I didn't like. I skimmed large parts of this because it was just plain old BORING. I'm glad I didn't spend any money on this, I'd feel well and truly robbed. I'll keep entering the giveaways because I've gotten some great stuff that way, but if this guy's the author I'll give them a pass.
Flat, one-dimensional characters experience a very Mary-Sue style storyline that is very unrealistic. Main character Coco is your typical "I AM DIFFERENT FROM OTHER GIRLS" girl and was obnoxious the entire book. Meronek tries to squeeze too many genres into a short novel, it may have been a much better read if he had only stuck to one or two rather than five plus. In short: poorly written and not very enjoyable.
I received this book as a part of a goodreads giveaway.
I'm not sure why but I could just never get into this book. It seemed about 200 pages too long and the plot was fairly uninteresting to me. The characters were also kinda boring and predictable.
Stay Another Night by P.S Meronek was a book gifted to me by my dear friend and mentor. I do love reading books however I had taken a hiatus on the act of opening one for a few years. This being my first read in a long while was not disappointing what so ever. From the beginning few pages the exciting news that Coco was a young woman who has a lot of interesting life curiosities. She was born a beauty and with that came opportunities to live an extraordinary life, she is humble, caring and honest throughout. She was able to use her uniqueness to add value to many others lives even if that wasn't what she set out to do, it just happened all around her. I found it interesting that in the end her choice to send her fathers murderer to Brazil on a oneway ticket was to be much more challenging for that persons life than just killing him or tossing him in jail. We will never know exactly what happened in Brazil, ha ha. Coco being in love with a mobster is also very terrifying, as they say love is blind, and I personally know I have been blinded in love before, it had scared me. All the best to Coco and Sam I hope they live happily ever after. Peace!
First off I am feeling guilty as I won this book quite a while ago from goodreads first reads and just got around to reading it.
It started out interesting enough. Enjoyed the characters at first and the storyline.
I guess after the whole raid part is when I started slowly losing interest. It was good to read a little at a time I just couldn't get hooked on it enough to want to keep reading.
I did like many parts of this book but something was just dragging for me. I couldn't relate to Coco or to Sam at all. Did not care much for their relationship either. Unbelievable characters and that is definitely a romance I'm glad I don't have!
The jumping from past to present a lot was a tad confusing but made a lot more sense at the end. I liked the plot twists and ending once I got past the unbelievable aspects.
