Magic on Main Street #3

The Order of Blood and Ruin

Rate this book
They used to be enemies. Now they’re partners.

I never imagined Considine Maledictus—one of the most powerful vampires alive—would go from ruling the streets at night to joining the supernatural task force just to become my partner, but here we are.

Considine claims he “fancies” me. He also used to hide his identity and pose as my charming next-door neighbor, so forgive me if I don’t believe him.

As bad as that is, my work life is worse.

My slayer identity—kept a secret since a lone slayer is an easy target—has been leaked by a suspect from a previous case. This brings a new level of danger to my job, especially since the suspect is obviously holding a grudge against me.

But I’m more worried about my city. Bad things are going down, and whatever is stirring in the shadows is more than I can handle alone. Can I trust Considine to watch my back when he used to be the biggest threat to my life?

And why is it that despite everything that has happened, a part of me wonders if it’s possible for a slayer and vampire to be together…

The Order of Blood and Ruin is the final book in the Magic on Main Street urban fantasy trilogy, and is part of the Magiford Supernatural City world. This series is packed with humor, magical fights, and a sweet, slow burn romance between a slayer who battles social anxiety and a vampire who is sick of his immortality.

Wow, wow, WOW! I didn’t know it was possible to fall MORE in love with a series with every passing book but it is! KM Shea does a fabulous job of weaving her supernaturals from past books with new storylines, while still making her new characters fresh, funny, and downright endearing!

I honestly fee like Considine is my new Magiford favorite! His wit and sass made him downright hilarious and I don’t know if I’ve ever laughed so hard at a Kitty book as I did this one!

The only sad part is waiting months for the next Magic on Main Street or Magiford book! But that’s okay…gives me time for a through reread yet again!

Such an amazing, fantastic, wonderful, swoony, action packed end to this trilogy! This is by far my favorite book in the series and I loved every second of it. 😍🥰😍🥰😍🥰

Jade is amazing, and Task Force became the chaos family I always knew they had in them, but the real surprise is that I went from disliking Considine in the first book (almost low key hating him, the jerk, lol) to loving him by the end of this book—Kitty rose to my challenge of making me like this vampire! I like how he was persistent in his pursuit of Jade but was also respectful of her boundaries and would back off if he made her uncomfortable without her asking which was really nice to see. Also these two are wonderful fighting partners along with being a cute couple which just makes the romance all the more sweet and appealing to me. 🥰🥰

I loved how everything was wrapped up and addressed with all the emotion, magical exploits, and wild action I could ever ask for! Though now I want a trilogy about an oracle because this book raised SO many questions about them that I need answers to!

I laughed out loud, swooned, was entirely stressed out, and overall just had the best time with this book and series. Even though I’m sad I’ll have to wait longer than usual for the next Magiford trilogy, that also just means I can just go back and reread all of the series all over again instead! Love this universe and I hope Kitty doesn’t stop writing them any time soon. ☺️

The Emperor's New Clothes, or in this case, the Author's New Editors!
I have so enjoyed the four previous Magiford Trilogies that catapulted KM Shea into the Kindle Best Seller Charts, that I was VERY disappointed with this latest series and it took me a while to work out why. Deborah Grace White, a South Australian author, edited all four of the previous Magiford Trilogies (and also The Prince's Bargain). It turns out that Marla Rogers edited the first two Magic On Main Street, and Alan Packer (DG White and Melanie Cellier's father) edited this one, The Order of Blood and Ruin.
The things I most enjoyed about the previous 4 series has turned out to be White's editing. The witty dialogue and situational comedy, especially with the minor characters, and the beautifully understated romances between the main characters were such a delight to savour.
Unfortunately this latest trilogy is quite simply not in the same class and was quite a disappointment to me. Oh yes, her fans loved it, but it was pretty much the same standard as her previous Fairy Tale/Enchantress/Elves/RPGLit etc. Her fan base is strong enough, especially for those who have read all of her previous books, to find much to enjoy in this latest installment, which revisits some of the main characters from the previous books. But for other aspiring writers who would love their books to get the same exposure, it is an object lesson in the difference between a world class editor and ones that are merely competent. Check the sales ranking for all of the series that White edited, and read and compare the differences.
For starters, with a GREAT writer, like Shakespeare or George RR Martin, or Jane Austen or Georgette Heyer, there ARE NO MINOR characters. All are beautifully realised and have their own distinct voices. With White as editor, I thoroughly enjoyed such well rounded minor characters. Their dialogue always moved the plot on and was entertaining. Unfortunately so many minor characters in this latest series were boring, their dialogue not even remotely entertaining, certainly for the most part did not move the action forward and could easily have been cut. The Dracos Siblings should have been rewritten, the potential was there for great comedy, yet they just ended up the butt of Killian's lousy jokes. They added nothing. Similarly Jade's co-workers could have done with a lot less story time, so that their best lines could have shone to best advantage. So much over the 3 books was quite frankly irrelevant and could easily have been cut, making a tighter and more entertaining story. The last book was far too long. We do not need lessons in gun safety, and every single fighting move was way too much information for the average reader. There was so much the editors should have cut.
Now for the main characters, the romance itself took over the plot, instead of enhancing the action, the lack of discipline in the dialogue was horrendously mushy. Men for the most part do not talk like Considine, even when they are madly in love. For a vampire who does not eat, calling her pet names based on types of meals just came off as irrelevant. He could have used types of weapons as pet names, given that she is a very competent fighter. She is a brave heroine and he could have used adjectives that extolled her leadership that would have fitted in with her character and the plot of this story. Less is more when it comes to romance in adventure stories, Mary Stuart is quite right to say that a man reveals his character in heroic ACTIONS in the romantic suspense genre, and kissing a woman without consent should have been flagged by a content editor as inappropriate, when there are so many other ways an equivalent or better grand statement could have been made by Considine at the end of Games of Enemies and Allies.
This series had a wonderful plotline, Enemies to Lovers, a reasonable adventure and mystery, some great side characters like Orrin and the co-workers with much potential for witty lines which got totally ruined by the editors not being ruthless enough in cutting all non-essentials to the overall plot. This was what made the other series so great: everything matched and enhanced the plot. Magic on Main Street just rambled on and so much was irrelevant to the plot.
I pray that this detailed review will give encouragement and insight for aspiring writers from a reader's perspective on the differences an editor can make. And the only logical conclusion any author could make would be to hang on to a world class editor like Deborah Grace White and do what it takes to keep them. Our world needs quality author editor partnerships.

I really enjoyed this last book in the Considine/Jade trilogy. I could pull up quibbles on odds and ends, but no quibbles hurt my overall fun with this book, so I shan't bother.

This was a pretty self-contained trilogy - if you haven't read the other books in the overall Magiford series, I don't think it will hurt you, though if you haven't at least read the first trilogy (Hazel/Killian) you'll miss some of the fun in this series, because those two characters are fairly significant secondary characters here. But in terms of plot, these 3 books are self-contained, and wrap up all the questions that come up within the trilogy. I found that nice, since we still have dangling loose ends from some of the other trilogies (most notably, who is pulling the strings behind the attacks on Hazel, the Night Court, etc).

Also, note that this is a clean romance - no smut on page, just mild kissing/affection.

Loved this last book in the trilogy! Yes, there are little things I could pick apart, it’s not perfect, BUT they are all small enough and I was loving the overall so much I didn’t even care. SOPE… a rare five stars just for pure light, fun, reading enjoyment.

495 pages? It's practically Christmas!

This book was well worth the wait. My mother was present for part of the time I was reading, and if I made that gasp/laugh/snort combo sound one more time, I think she was going to take me somewhere to get evaulated.

With this being probably the longest of the Magiford books, and probably one of this author's longest overall, I did wonder what was going to happen, but I didn't feel like any of the scenes were fluff or filler, and feel like everything was well thought out, and planned for. All the plot points from the two previous books in the series were wrapped up, as well as the ones from this book. The idea that the previous book didn't end on a cliffhanger is a bald faced lie, but this book makes up for it.

I absolutely love Con's Touch Her and Die energy, which suits him so well. I loved that, as we saw in the last book, he wasn't afraid to say what he was feeling and go for it, despite the consequences that could come from him confessing how he felt. He was also making sure to respect her boundaries, even before she realized that he was. We love to see it. The fact that while they were still figuring out their relationship, they still communicated with each other was fantastic. No miscommunication causing hurt feelings here!

I liked that we got to see Jade reacting even more to those around her and interating with her community that she's built for herself. This book, even more than the last one, which was way more than the first, really gave Jade a chance to shine, since she was coing out of her shell more.

Seeing Jade interact with the other slayers was fun, and I loved the arrival scene, which I felt like I could really picture. I also enjoyed seeing Con interact more with his family (even if he doesn't want to claim them as such).

My only "gripe" is that I was hoping Jade and Con would get to take possession of the... result of their last mission. I know that's not how it works, but I think it would be fun. More for Jade than for Con, as I don't think Killian would share the result of his experiements, and I could see him making a similar error in judgment.

This book was definitely worth the wait, and the only downside is that now we have to wait until December (hopefully!) for more.

Another win for this author for sure!

This book is SO AMAZING and a great finale to this trilogy! Considine and Jade are SUCH a great couple! For all his chaotic nature, Considine is so patient with Jade, backing off whenever she tells him to back off. I just LOVED how humorous this whole book was! The banter is just the best in this book and this whole series! The SNARK, guys! The snark!

And that ending is such so intense! I stayed up way too late because I just HAD to finish this book!

Absolutely awesome!!

This book was the perfect ending to this series. I loved seeing Considine and Jade's relationship grow deeper as the book went on. This book is a pretty long one! but it's well worth the read. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who's looking for a vampire/slayer fantasy romance!

Romance: CLEAN. No explicit scenes, and no cursing other than "bl*st" and "dang". Those words only appear about once each, so it's not bad.

Talk about an oh so clever play of words that is the title!!

All of you lovely souls who read these instalments ONE AT A TIME as they came out have my admiration. I aspire to that level of patience because I don’t have it, having flown through these in 3 days at rapid succession. 🙈

The romance finally comes to fruition in this book after a delicious slow burn in the first 2 books. Jade & Considine are adorable. Beyond adorable, really, and so perfect for each other. More than the romance though, the team bonds FLOORED me—found family will forever be the way to my heart. 🥹 (And the Dracos family cutting wit had me in stitches at times!)

I cannot wait for these to release in paperback because I will totally be rereading them again and again!

September 2024 Update

This series holds a special place in my heart because it was the first K.M. Shea series I read. (Also, Jade is a lot like me, so I related hard.) I had none of the Magiford backstory, and now that I’ve read & loved all the other trilogies, it made this reread so much more poignant. The Easter eggs were incredible. Seeing a married Killian & Hazel made my heart full. And seeing an annoyed & flustered Killian Drake had me in stitches. It was good to return to Magiford and spend time amongst friends. 💛

Wonderful, Magical

I loved this. I want to read it again right now! Jade is amazing and Considine is her perfect partner, although he's not perfect at all. I need to go back to the Gate Of Myth And Power book. The one where Jade was part of the task force that stopped. Noctus and company. Curious whether that was before or after this.

Magiforce series are some of my favorite books. There's so much in this one that I hope it bridges over to the next trilogy..

Oh my word! It was FANTASTIC

There could not have been a better ending for this trilogy. This book was AMAZING.

Ugh so good

Considine and his "seduction" plans had me cracking up because man was this kisses only romance such a slow burn.

I absolutely loved Jade and how she represents people with anxiety. The way she learned to handle it in this book was *chef's kiss*

As always the side characters are fantastic. Absolutely love Orrin.

The character growth for everyone was positively gorgeous and I even CRIED! I know. I know. It was just that good.

The mystery, the suspense, the action. It was all so good that I could not put this book down.

I feel absolutely satisfied by the ending but also like I need six more books of Jade and Considine because I love them so so so much.

I can't wait to see what happens in Magiford next because boy oh boy there is soooo much potential!

AHHHHHHH I can't get over it. It was so fabulous.

💋Sweet kisses only

So sad to see this series end. Considine’s my favorite character, especially in his dealings with the Drake vampires and with other characters. Love the extended ending—beyond “they lived happily ever after”. Seems like the ending length is a good balance to good story, like in LOTR. But then, the author is distinctive to me in how she works with romantic characters learning to temper their strengths and how to be complementary. That’s core in all marriages. I can always hope that K. M. Shea will write more about Magiford’s wonderful characters and also create new characters. Maybe we’ll see more about the elf princess. I hope so!

“I'm no longer alone. I've got Sunshine, my team, Orrin... and Considine. Especially Considine. Always Considine.”

I'm freeeeee!! This one wasn't as bad as the previous two, to be fair. The last third had the same magic as the rest of the other books have- it's just a shame it took 3 books for me to kind of like it :')

I think the problem with this series is that it was just not giving the tension I was promised between a vampire x vampire slayer. Considine's affections for Jade started pretty early on, but it also dragged on for so long with the hidden identity stuff and Jade being so into her own head. Again, I love me a slow-burn and Kitty's other books have managed to deliver on that, but this didn't. They were cute at the end but it still felt a little flat.

The last third of the book was wonderfully reminiscient of what I know to love about Kitty's books, with Killian and Hazel appearing more and the snake-brat siblings being delightful side characters. Oh! That's another thing. Jade's team just weren't giving as the found family trope. Again, I attribute that to Jade being so in her head, but also there were too many of them for me to feel attached. It was just so meh.

The book had good progression for the wider plot and I'm looking forward to see what new wizard family will inhabit House Tellier, and what will become of Iris!

The ranking so far:
1) Hall of Blood & Mercy│★★★★★
2) Pack of Dawn & Destiny │★★★★★
3) Court of Midnight & Deception│★★★
4) Magic on Main Street│★★

Great finale

I devoured this book last night. It was so entertaining and sweet. I love the bits of redemption we got and the team bonding. There's a wrap up to the big mystery and everything ties together nicely, but is really the ride to get there that was so fun. And I love all the family and team moments.

The romance is really sweet. Considine is a good mix of determined but not pushy. And it's nice to see Jade have some emotional growth and start to see herself and others a bit more clearly.

So tried to do too much but has a very good ending. Drag with the extra as we wanted to go to the end. We get the show down with the dragon, which is not close to the ending So that was stretched out to this last book and could have been wrapped earlier. Next was early change of priorities by the task force Thinking of this actually makes me like the last entry a bit more than this one except not enough happens there and too much is put forward and screwed around to come to the ending here. Overall the trilogy is quite good and solid 3.5-3.6.

Excellent Conclusion

I had a suspicion after finishing book 2 that this might be one of my favorite Magiford trilogies, and I am happy to say that was confirmed by this book. It pulled me in immediately, and I couldn't put it down. I look forward to the next installment in this world.

Contains kisses and fighting.

Sorry Kitty, this is probably my least favorite of your books.

Considine is very one note and acts like a creep with his constant talk of seducing Jade until she gives in, Jade goes to work, the other vampires act like teenager being very immature, etc then we have three fights where instead of trying stealth they go in guns blazing and start shooting/stabbing people.

There is a lot of attention on Killian’s siblings but then we get no info on the oracle other than that she exists. It would be nice to know why she is unregistered or how House Tellier got her.

My other issue is with the power dynamic. Case in point, (Spoilers for the other Magniford Magical Series ahead)

In series 1, Killian super powerful vampire falls for Hazel a weak wizard who turns out to be super powerful

In series 2, Rigel a top notch assassin falls for Leah a seemingly weak half-fae who turns out to be super powerful

Series 3 has Greyson the most alpha of alpha werewolves to ever wolf falling for Pip a seemingly normal Hunter who turns out to be an ultra powerful wolf’s kiss

Last year’s series had Noctus. He’s king of elves, a race thought extinct and the most powerful of his family falls for Chloe a person who can turn into a cat which happens to be the only type of being which could take down elves (so pretty powerful)

Then we have this series:
Considine a first generation vampire, a being so powerful he can command other vampires, turn into a bat, and heal mega quickly (because it makes sense that one’s healing would improve with age?) falls for Jade a vampire slayer. She doesn’t really have any powers, she’s just really dedicated and good with weapons. Therein lies the problem. She’s just a regular person. I don’t get why he’s into her especially after his thousand years of flying solo. Nor do I care for the fact that he wants to change her. It would be more romantic to me if he lived the rest of her life with her (and still loved her as she aged) and then they could die together but that’s just my wishful thinking.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Good

This book completes Jade and Considine’s story, and is not a standalone, because it picks up where book two left off, and continues that story.
It’s set in the author’s Magiford world, which means that familiar faces from other series can be seen, and references to events in those books are made. That being said, it’s a standalone story across the three books, and doesn’t impact the other series much.

Considine’s decision to join the Magiford City Supernatural Police means that Jade finally has a partner who can keep up with her, something she definitely needs after drawing the ire of the dragon shifter obsessed with breaking into the local magical bank.
Therese are several cases the team needs to investigate, and Considine has declared his intentions towards Jade, which is something the Slayer isn’t quite sure how to handle…

A lot going on in this book, and I’m trying not to spoil it for others too much.
Considine really showed how his age is an advantage in this book- his handling of Jade was perfect, and showed just how careful his observations had been. He gave her clear warning, and made his pursuit carefully, it was masterfully done.
Jade herself really reached outside her comfort zone in this too, she has grown a lot. It was fun seeing her with her family, because they were larger than life. It was also wonderful to have some people explain their behaviour so Jade couldn’t misinterpret it, and I loved seeing how she came to rely on Considine to clarify things for her.
The two truly had a lovely partnership in all ways, and it was nice to see their sweet romance blossom along with it.

By the end of the book, I admit to a few sappy tears, and some happy sighs, because it was an engrossing and enjoyable read.
The star of the book award goes to Considine’s bat form, which was too funny, though I think a second star is given to the House because it earned it!

This is a lovely, clean urban fantasy, featuring a socially awkward vampire slayer, and a conniving elder vampire. It’s an excellent choice for UF fans, and e who have loved the other Magiford world books. A truly enthralling read.

Dnf. I'm so annoyed. The reason why I kept up with this series, despite not enjoying the first two books, was because I wanted to see where the romance would go, and if the main character would finally befriend her teammates.

But I'm sick of it. The writing quite literally has no life and barely any semblance of personality to these characters. It read like how chalk would taste; the literary equivalent of a brick wall.

Not to mention, each book felt so unfinished. There was this whole series long plot shaped thing happening, but each individual installment felt disjointed and unsatisfactory. I had hoped for some growth on Jade's part, but for all her trying, she remained stagnant and never once spoke up for herself, and it infuriates the hell out of me. Multiple times, she mentions the stupid nickname is a little hurtful and brushes it off like it's nothing. Why even bring it up? God. Whatever. I'm done.

The story
The Order of Blood and Ruin is the final book in the magic on main street urban fantasy trilogy and set in the magiford supernatural city world and it does follow on from the first two books and should be read in order. This is a slow burn romance between a slayer who battles social anxiety and a vampire who is sick of his immortality.

“Considine claims he “fancies” me. He also used to hide his identity and pose as my charming next-door neighbor, so forgive me if I don't believe him.”

Jade doesn't even realize she loves him until half way through the final book but for me the romance storyline is second to the mystery of why the Dragon shifter wants to break into the supernatural bank in Magiford owned by her sister and hatchmate Tutu.

Jade O’Neil is a lone slayer who joined the Magiford supernatural response taskforce to prove that slayers can protect and not just kill. Imagine being a cop who has an assassin as your new teammate, they all lovingly nickname her “Blood” . The higher ups decide as no one can keep up with her and provide adequate backup and after a sizeable bribe, i mean donation, Considine Maledictus aka Ruin (an elder vampire) joins the taskforce to become Blood’s new partner and announces he fancies her and that he intends to seduce her and keep her safe, all to Jade’s bewilderment.

Blood and Ruin have their plate full with the snake brats, the O’Neil family, the dragon shifter with a vendetta against Jade always ruining her plans to commit B&E as well as the usual taskforce antics and patrolling the streets and lets not forget the ‘paper’ Sarge is making her write.

Without spoilers in the final instalment we meet all of Jade’s family and it's just as crazy and amazing as I thought it would be.

The characters
The characters are well developed, with hilarious interactions and an extensive set of side characters that we have already met in other books in the Magiford supernatural world. I think one of the best features of this book series is the crossover of characters and scene settings and how the characters develop through the whole series. It brings familiarity to the reader and really pulls the audience into the story with wonderful world building and realistic characters

The writing
K.M. Shea writes funny, clean stories with strong characters and Blood and Ruin is no different, the whole series is wonderfully written, well structured and paced, great action scenes and delightful and relatable characters. The storyline is complex and intriguing, creating an unput downable reading experience that is warm and wholesome just like a hot chocolate on a winter morning in front of a crackling log fire - simply perfect in every way.

Final thoughts
My final thoughts; this book was the perfect completion of Blood and Ruins story, with lots of loose ends tied up nicely. I can't believe i finished the book so fast but i just couldn't put it down, i'm so addicted to the happy feeling these books create that i just want more and can't wait for the beginning of a new trilogy in the world to start. K.M. Shea is my go to author for a feel good read and I highly recommend all of her books.

Overall, loved the series! The world building is great with the politics, the variety of supernatural, the details/background that go into all of them, and the magic systems in place.

Next, the plot has continued to be fun and action packed throughout all three books and it gets wrapped up nicely with this last book. There has never been a moment where I felt it was too much into politics or too overly serious or it was too slow (although too slow for the romance for my taste).

Then, the characters have all been enjoyable and for myself personally never got annoyed with any of them (other than the villain). Also, the character development/growth for the FL, ML, and the magical task force team was fun to follow throughout the books and well done.

Finally, the romance was super cute in this book (WE FINALLY MADE GUYS AND GALS). The slow burn was not a lie and IMO is an understatement! YES I GET IT we need the buildup from enemies/strangers to friends to lovers but over the span of three books is SO LONG 😭. I see that all the books in the Magiford Supernatural City series will be like this and I know what I am getting myself into continuing with the other books but it still pains me (with all dramatics intended in this statement). I was thirsty for some romance by the time I started the third book and this book gave 😩. The relationship between the two was so cute, such a green flag, and the ML was PUT TO WORK! He pushed the FLs boundaries just enough never too much and was always so respectful. He was also so supportive of the FL and only brought out her best! Always encouraging her, helping her where she needed it and never overly doing it so she could continue to grow, being her backup, changing his ways for her, and trusting and believing in her. UGHHH love them 😩

I will miss reading about these characters! It's been a good three books and I recommend them! Lastly, I will def be continuing the Magiford Supernatural City series.

My rankings of the series within the Magiford Supernatural City (15 books):
1. Magic on Mainstreet - the vampire slayer & (most powerful?) vampire (this story)
2. Pack of Dawn and Destiny - the Alpha & the werewolf hunter
3. Court of Midnight and Deception Series - the night queen fae & assassin baddie
4. Gate of Myth and Power - the elf king & shadow cat

unranked bc have yet to read:
- Hall of blood and Mercy

stayed up all night to read this!

Wow Kitty. WOW. That was AMAZING!

It was utter joy reading this book. My daughter and I read them together. It came out at midnight, but we weren't going to start until today. And then... WE COULDN'T WAIT! Originally I said I was going to read 50%, like that actually has any semblance of virtue attached to it when you start at midnight, but there was no way. We just had to finish.

The entire book was a love story to the characters and I am here for it. (Oh I bet Hazel was ECSTATIC!)

Definitely my favourite Magiford book.

So much character development, not just in the mains but the smaller characters too. Great ongoing insight into the political world. And Killian! I nearly bust a gut when Killian said to Jade "I may have been mistaken". That scene. SO FUNNY!

All of the other relationships involve a measure of power imbalance, but this one does not. And they TALK. About consent. About their relationship boundaries and about how they move on when their friendship started with lies. It was DELIGHTFUL!

This gives depth to all of the other books and characters in the series. Well done you.

This is still one of my favorite series, and while it’s impossible to pick a favorite character (for me at least), Jade (Blood) and Considine (Ruin) have a special place in my heart. The flirty banter between Considine and Jade is on point as well—I’ve especially loved his food related nicknames for Jade. There was so much character growth in this book, and the team dynamics and loyalty were a lovely touch. Strong friendships abound as new ones are forged as old ones grow. There’s also a neat undercurrent of grace and the reality of mortality and loss in this one. While unexpected, I felt like the depth added a unique punch to this set from the series. I hope that, like the others do, that these characters will show up in many stories to come—and that there will be plenty to come in the Magiford series moving forward.
