Les ignorants: Récit d'une initiation croisée-Version poche
Par un beau temps d'hiver, deux individus, bonnets sur la tête, sécateur en main, taillent une vigne. L'un a le geste et la parole assurés. L'autre, plus emprunté, regarde le premier, cherche à comprendre « ce qui relie ce type à sa vigne », et s'étonne de « la singulière fusion entre un individu et un morceau de rocher battu par les vents ».
Le premier est vigneron, le second auteur de bandes dessinées.
Pendant un an, Étienne Davodeau a goûté aux joies de la taille, du décavaillonnage, de la tonnellerie ou encore s'est interrogé sur la biodynamie.
Richard Leroy, de son côté, a lu des bandes dessinées choisies par Étienne, a rencontré des auteurs, s'est rendu dans des festivals, est allé chez un imprimeur, s'est penché sur la planche à dessin d'Étienne...
Étienne et Richard échangent leurs savoirs et savoir-faire, mettent en évidence les points que ces pratiques (artistiques et vigneronnes) peuvent avoir en commun ; et ils sont plus nombreux qu'on ne pourrait l'envisager de prime abord...

Altı yıldız! 2021'in son kitabı muazzam çıktı. Baobab Yayınları'nı bir kez daha (çizgileri bu şekilde devam ederse asla yorulmayacağım!) tebrik ediyorum. Bir günde bitirdim ve artık ne çizgi roman ne de şarap üretimi, bağcılık konusunda "bilgisizim," diyemem. İki farklı dinamiğin mutasyonu ile ortaya çıkan müthiş samimi, gülümseten, her sayfa zihninizde edebi, üzüm tadı bırakan nefis bir eser. Şarap ve çizgi roman seviyorsanız, iki farklı kulvarın bir araya gelip bambaşka şeyler üretebileceğine inanıyorsanız acele edin, bu kitap kesinlikle kaçmaz!

Çizgi romanlarla aram yoktur, keyif almam, bu nedenle kitap çok ilgi çekici konusuna rağmen akıcı bir okuma olmadı. Şarap ve çizgi roman ustası iki kişinin profesyonel mesleki konuları karşılıklı olarak anlatarak birbirlerini aydınlatmalarını, çizimlerle okura sunulması şeklimdeki bu kitap değişik bir proje. Hem şarap hem de çizgi roman konusunda ciddi şekilde bilgilenirken ikisinin de benzer yönleti olduğunu görüyoruz. Vedat Milor’un önsözü de ilgi çekici. Konuya ilgi duyanlar için.

Davodeau's comic chronicles a year in which he works with a vintner friend to learn the art (and science) of winemaking, while the vintner learns comics. A unique life project, and unique idea for a comic, almost guaranteeing, I suppose, that a lot of people may not be interested in it. It's pretty long, 243 pages, in large book format, which makes it more beautiful but possibly also belies the simplicity and intimacy of the project somehow, by which I mean this is a story of two sweet, quiet, passionate men learning about the crafts of their respective professions. It's a small, intimate project, so seems like a small book idea, not an epic tome. It depicts two nerds with esoteric interests!
But that's nitpicking to begin the review, since I happen to be the ideal reader for this book: I like and appreciate good wine and comics, and am not an academic-type scholar of either. I'm an enthusiast, who appreciates knowing some of the backstory behind the making of these things I love. But this is less a story of technique than it is about principled, uncompromising dedication to art (vs profit, which neither seek). They LOVE their work, and it is for me a joy to see them interact. It's almost as if Davodeau were demonstrating to us as he does the vintner why it is he loves comics: For the human connection, to have you get to know exactly how the experience was, to get you feel like you know those actual persons, to be in that wine cellar or comics convention, sure, meeting luminaries they know in their respective fields, but also just being in on conversations they are having about their art, how they got into it, why they do it, why they will stay in it.
So it's not about the business of comics, it's about love and principled commitment to what you do, to craft. It's also partly about how comics and wine-making can be similar, though that's less the point than they are crafts, art. The comic is lovingly drawn, beautiful to see, as the artist's recent project, Lulu, is, which, coming to a greater understanding of his purpose, I came to appreciate even more. I didn't think the final project was overwhelmingly awesome, but it was great work, if that makes any sense. It didn't bowl me over, but I feel like I got to know the principal characters and appreciate and understand their work. I recommend it, obviously. It made an impact on me and I'll remember it as one of my favorites of the year. It may have something to do with my being older, about the age of these guys, too.

This was a complete surprise - I picked it up at the library, thought it sounded OK for someone who loves both wine and BD - and I loved it! Wise and witty words about the world of publishing and illustration, and the world of vineyards, a vivacious exchange of ideas (sometimes confrontational), two adorable strong-headed main characters and simple drawings that give you room to breathe and enjoy.

For those who love wine and comics, this is your book. Davodeau spent a year with a winemaker - and not just any winemaker, one who is purely organic and sulphur-free. The vigneron learns about comics and the comic book writer learns about wine-making. A wonderful book!

Probablemente mi libro favorito de Davodeau (uno de mis favoritos, en general) Esta historia de "ignorantes" que transmiten su amor por lo que hacen y se van empapando del saber ajeno es uno de sus mejores trabajos. Una historia que engancha y absorbe sin necesitar nada más que la fuerza de sus personajes.

Her zamanki gibi etkisi altında kalmamak için konusunu okumadan satın aldım ve ilk etapta Vedat Milor'un önsözüne şaşırdım. Niye, neyle ilgiliydi ki bu kitap?
Sonra okumaya başladıkça tatlı bir aydınlanma hikayesine döndü. Cahiller derken Vedat Milor'un önsözünde olduğu gibi pekala Bilgisizler de olabilirdi. Çünkü ne Etienne Davodeau, ne de Richard Leroy cahil. Sadece birbirlerinin uzmanlıkları konusunda bilgi sahibi değiller. Zaten dostlukları sayesinde bir yıllık bir sürede karşılıklı olarak aydınlanıyorlar.
Çizimleri çok hoş, net, yumuşak, göz yormuyor. Gece sahneleri bile mükemmel. Sayfalar geniş olunca her kareye bol bol yer ayrılmış. Kitapta da geçtiği şekliyle Maus gibi bir karmaşa yok. Kağıt zaten ekstra kaliteli. Bana özellikle çizim olarak Joe Sacco'nun Gazze'nin Dipnotları çizgi romanını hatırlattı. Sonundaki İçildi | Okundu bölümüne bayıldım. Denedikleri şarapları ve okudukları çizgi romanları tek tek listelemişler. Sağolsun Baobab da Türkçe basımı olanları yayınevleriyle birlikte ayrıca belirtmiş.
Kitapla ilgili tek söyleyeceğim çok tekdüze olması. Herhangi bir iniş çıkış yok. Herhangi bir olay örgüsü yok. Sıkılmadım ama heyecan da yok. Beklenti de yok. Biraz tren yolculuğu gibi. Kafanızı vurup uyuyabilirsiniz, manzaranın tadına varabilirsiniz, geçtiğiniz coğrafya hakkında birşeyler öğrenebilirsiniz. April 10, 2023Dois amigos têm carreiras distintas. Um é produtor de vinho, e o outro de arte sequencial (especialmente argumentos). Este último achou que tinha aqui óptimo material para uma novela gráfica, e por isso abundam os paralelismos forçados entre os dois ofícios, lembrando aquelas entrevistas em que os actores que dão voz a um animal real ou imaginário falam de como tiveram que explorar o «esquilo-das-pampas/crocodilo floclórico/dragão do Alto Minho» que havia algures no mapeamento da sua alma.
Talvez não suportar, sequer, o cheiro do vinho haja minorado a minha boa vontade leitora, mas ainda pior do que isso é o asco que tenho a cenas de «A conhece B, cuja fama aproveita para dar visibilidade ao que faz». E também nisso abunda esta obra, sempre muito humilde e autêntica, só que sem abdicar destes «cameos» que por acaso têm o condão de amaciar o público-alvo.
Uma leitura tão boa como um copo de vinho.

Há livros para nós e livros que não são para nós.
Este não era bem para mim. A premissa é muito interessante e o livro serve como ponto de partida quem pretenda introduzir-se no mundo da vinicultura ou no mundo da BD.
Contudo, pessoalmente, às vezes a sensação é que era um pouco pretensioso, todos aqueles jantares com eminentes figuras de BD a bebericar vinho...não é o meu estilo.
Este não era bem para mim. A premissa é muito interessante e o livro serve como ponto de partida quem pretenda introduzir-se no mundo da vinicultura ou no mundo da BD.
Contudo, pessoalmente, às vezes a sensação é que era um pouco pretensioso, todos aqueles jantares com eminentes figuras de BD a bebericar vinho...não é o meu estilo.

. Quelle erreur ! La lecture des Ignorants me conforte dans ma première impression, nous avons affaire à un très grand auteur -- je pense que je vais rafler tout le rayon Davodeau lors de mon prochain passage à la bibliothèque.
Il nous parle de la rencontre entre deux arts celui du vin et celui de la bande dessinée. Et ce n’est pas le mariage de la carpe et du lapin. Bien au contraire, il s’agit dans les deux cas de plaisirs appréciés par des amateurs éclairés, des personnes de bon goût -- je me flatte un peu en tant qu'amateur des deux. Mais c’est aussi la rencontre de deux hommes, Richard Leroy et Etienne Davodeau, chacun faisant découvrir à l’autre son univers, lui faisant partager sa passion. Davodeau excelle dans l'art de raconter le quotidien, faire partager de simples discussions en exploitant les expressions, les regards. Il y parvient tellement bien que l’on croirait prendre part à ces échanges. Beaucoup d'humanité passe au travers de ce récit.
C'est avant tout une histoire d'hommes, de travail bien fait, de vision. Il ne faut jamais oublier le point de vue du narrateur. C'est Etienne Davodeau qui raconte, qui découvre et qui apprend. Il est donc le premier ignorant, celui qui a provoqué la rencontre et certainement le plus curieux. Par conséquent, la partie concernant le vin est bien plus présente que celle concernant la bande dessinée -- tout cela paraît assez logique au fond. Cette dernière est loin d'être approfondie et finalement presque anecdotique si l'on excepte les rencontres avec les auteurs. Les non connaisseurs découvriront néanmoins quelques grandes références de la bande dessinée astucieusement reprises à la fin du livre dans un parallèle qui conclu parfaitement l'ouvrage : Bus / Lus. Une lecture qui procure du bonheur tout simplement -- et envie de boire un coup et / ou de lire une BD.

Kitabı bitirdiğimde az çok şarap yapımı hakkında bilgi edindim, okurken elimden bırakamadım ve bir günde bitirdim. Bir günde bu bilgileri hangi çizgi roman bu şekilde verebilir. Étienne Davodeau'nun Fransız çizgi roman dünyası, yazarları ve çizgi roman festivalleri ziyaretlerini de araya sıkıştırması merak uyandırıcı. Fazla beklentiye kapılmadan okumak gerekiyor yine de. Davodeau retorna al mundo de Rural para contar la experiencia de poco más de un año conviviendo con Richard Leroy, un agricultor del Valle del Loira. Esta vez desde un terreno más próximo al relato personal que al reportaje periodístico. Mientras aprende los quehaceres y las rutinas de una explotación vitivinícola, sumerge a su maestro en el universo del tebeo, estableciendo continuas comparaciones entre ambas realidades y dando pie a un curioso diálogo.
La manera de Leroy de afrontar su profesión, aunando saberes ancestrales, conocimientos científicos, delirios homeopáticos y pensamientos subjetivos, resuena con las equivalencias que Davodeau va encontrando. A veces naturales, otras un tanto forzadas, siempre interesantes cuando toman la palabra los profesionales del cómic y del vino a los que visitan. Al no haber nada más (no hay menciones a las familias, no existen conflictos, la viña y el cómic ocupan todo el tiempo el centro del tebeo), este intercambio está en todo momento supeditado a un didacticismo que puede resultar un tanto cansino para quien necesite algo de comedia o drama.

uma deliciosa partilha de vida, de vinhos, de viagens e livros de bd entre duas personagens adultas e de bem com a vida. um oasis de tranquilidade servido por um grafismo de cinzentos bem sugestivo.

There are obvious parallels between making graphic novels (writing, drawing, printing and distributing to readers) and making wine (raising, fermenting, bottling and distributing to drinkers): Each is a job that can be easily misunderstood. Each is a form of art which many people fail to recognize as art. Each is practiced by an assortment of masters, mediocrities and eccentrics not even their peers can understand. Each has its own arcane practices and occult jargon, incomprehensible to the unititiated.
There are obvious parallels between reading graphic novels and drinking wine: Some people enjoy them in prudent moderation, while others become obsessives who allow something meant to enrich their lives to take over their lives. Some people despise anyone who has anything to do with them (using, respectively, the slurs "subliterate" and "drunkard").
Etienne Davodeau and Richard Leroy don't really "exchange jobs", as the subtitle claims. Rather, they exchange insights into their jobs: Etienne shows Richard his drafting tools and takes him to the editorial offices and the printing press where his unique art is turned into a mass product. Richard puts Etienne to work pruning vines and draws samples from his barrels to show him how fermenting wine progresses towards the form in which it will be bottled.
Richard offers Etienne tastes of Poulsards and Chardonnays, while Etienne showers Richard with Art Spiegelman and Alan Moore.
I'm amused by the fact that the English title, "The Initiates" stands opposite to the original French title, "Les Ignorants", but at the same time, the underlying principle is the same. Rather the way that the English word "mammal" compares with its German equivalent, Säugetier. The one means "milk-producer", while the other means "milk-drinker". Etienne and Richard both nourish, and they both are nourished. Reading this book, you will be nourished, and it will be up to you to nourish others with your own talent and labor.

The premise of the book: two friends, a winemaker and a comic artist, decide to closely shadow each other's work for abt a year - an immersive, guided tour by a preeminent expert, if you will. And this is presented in the form of a comic. I think this might be the most millennial thing I've read. (True to form, the vintner believes in a post-organic, 'biodynamic' style of agriculture, and had earlier quit his job as a banker).
Besides being millennial, the book is very French, ofc, and names of wines, and comics, and their leading contemporary creators, and their bonhomie seen in festivals and private meetings, while extensively recorded (yay, info!) is almost entirely encapsulated in France.
Davodeu's black and white drawings are clear and leave panels with just enough detail (but not any more), which supplements the storyline well. On a very specific note, chapters are divided by a white sheet bearing the chapter title in a most impressive font. And if oenophilia escapes you, read it for discovering cool French artists (and hope someone's translated them).

Quelle bonne idée ce projet, M.Davodeau, chapeau. On plonge vraiment dans deux mondes différents: celui d'un vigneron et celui d'un dessinateur de bandes dessinées. C'est une vraie initiation, un voyage, on suit doucement le changement de saisons dans la vigne, le travail à faire, la surveillance quotidienne exigée… Et aussi, pas mal de renseignements sur la production du vin comme le biodynamique, l’ajout de soufre et tant d’autres. Et puis, en alternance avec le vigneron on suit les pas d’un dessinateur, on connait son propre monde : les maisons d’éditions, les critiques, les techniques du dessin. Et vous devinez quoi ? Il y a des points communs dans ces deux mondes, si différents en apparence: l’art, le fait-main, le contact.

J’aime bien les bandes dessinées, je me trouve très souvent magnétisée tout autant par le dessin que par l’histoire racontée, ce qui est absolument le cas de cette bd-ci que je recommande vivement.

Il est rare d'avoir une bande dessinée de plus de 200 pages et pourtant en voici une ! Ce n'est pas une simple bd mais un témoignage à travers la rencontre entre deux mondes qui semblent différents à première vue.
Pourtant au fil de la lecture nous trouvons de nombreuses similitudes dans la façon de procéder, les réflexions sur leur façon de faire, etc...
Il réussit à retranscrire le monde viticole et à le confondre avec celui d'auteur de bande dessinée.
C'est un témoignage très intéressant et enrichissant qui donne envie de déguster les vins dont il est fait mention tout en lisant les ouvrages dont il est fait allusion.
J'ai particulièrement apprécié cet échange réciproque où chacun à chercher à montrer toutes les facettes de leur monde.
Un livre merveilleux à offrir aux amateurs de vins et de bd.

Wow.
Mes styles de prédilection, c'est Fantasy et Science-Fiction. Donc quand mon copain insiste pour que je lise Les Ignorants, je traine, le contourne, j'y vais à reculons, puis je fini par l'ouvrir, un soir, 2 min avant de me coucher.
C'est sympa. Je lis le premier chapitre et me couche.
Le lendemain, je ne peux pas m'empêcher de lire un autre chapitre, puis je me prépare en quatrième vitesse, je suis en retard !
Ce système de chapitres est vraiment bien, car la BD est longue. Le samedi, j'intercale un chapitre et une tâche ménagère. Je n'ai jamais été aussi efficace à ranger mon appartement !!
Les ignorants, c'est une lecture qui te séduit petit à petit, qui te fait découvrir 2 univers immenses, qui t'apprends à repenser tes certitudes et les codes du genre.
Etienne Davodeau nous offre ici un petit bijou, à mettre entre toutes les mains de curieux.

Sin lugar a dudas un libro muy interesante acerca del mundillo del vino y del cómic, personalmente no me gusta nada lo primero y adoro lo segundo, pero en este cómic nos encontramos a dos hombres con vocaciones muy distintas pero a la vez muy similares, como ellos mismos descubren. Sabremos del proceso de elaboración de un buen vino y de festivales diversos de cómic todo de la mano de un dibujo fabuloso.
Ah! Al final del libro nos encontramos con una pequeña lista de cómics de todos los tiempos que bien podrían ser candidatos a la lista de quiero leer del Goodreads

« Les ignorants » est un beau récit d’initiation croisée. On sent qu’Etienne Davodeau affectionne tout particulièrement le monde rural et adore le mettre en images. De notre côté, on en ressort avec une impression d’avoir appris des choses nous-aussi sur le dessin, les ceps de vigne, la tonnellerie. C’est en quelque sorte un troisième ignorant qui s’invite ici dans la danse…

A really casual yet extremely enjoyable book that takes you through the processes of comic book drawing and wine making, teaching you the basics and giving you some titles and names to start your own personal journey with.
